Ever wonder what the best version of a game is, or if the version you are playing is worthwhile compared to other ports? Wonder no more! Starting with 3rd gen consoles, I'm making definitive lists of every official US release for the console, with notation on if that version is the best or if a better version exists elsewhere. I'm sticking to English releases, and versions that can be played in English either officially or through a translation patch. If a superior Japanese only release exists, I note it as such. I typically favor arcade releases, but in some cases the home port is superior.

The ROM pack only contains the games that are either exclusive to the console, or have their best version on that console. This doesn't mean every game in the pack is actually worth playing, only that it's the best version of that particular game to exist. If you disagree with a recommendation, please let me know in this thread and supply some proof that the version you are arguing for is superior to the one on the list. I'm not a platform warrior, I'm just a gamer, I have no preference, I just want to clean my ROM lists of all the bloat and piss-poor ports.

5/21/19: As I work on 4th gen, some slight changes can be expected for 3rd gen lists. So far I've had to update charts for NES and SMS, and the rom pack for SMS.

I, holy shit this would be amazing to have. I imagine you already have a (probably more than) fair idea of how long it can take to research which versions of a game across various platforms would be better so this would be a godsend when/if it's completed. As a guy who spent hours trying to figure out which port/localization/fan translation of various RPGs would be better to play I firmly applaud your efforts.

Future plans/TODO list:

Make a pastebin with all the download links to clean up the OP.

4th Gen(SNES, Genesis, 32X, TG-16, can do lists for CDi, TG-CD, and Sega CD but not isos)

5th Gen(N64, Jaguar, can do lists for PSX, Saturn, and Jaguar CD but not isos)

Retro handheld consoles(GB, GBC, GBA, GG, Lynx)

Enhancement optional add-on packs with added SRAM saving and bug fixes

Maybe an Amiga pack for all the games that got ported to a retro console or something, I dunno

In Progress:

4th Gen

EDIT4: Both NTSC/U and PAL 32X ROMs are in the same zip, since only 1 PAL ROM made the cut. It's Darxide. Sega CD chart is up, as usual with CD based systems I can't provide all the games. Check rom depot or the eye or something. If you can't find a certain game, let me know and I'll find a link for you.

Gonna take a brief break after the Genesis set is uploaded to refresh the MAME set. It's gotten a bit messy. Anyone looking to get current from scratch has to download the complete 0.205 set, the missing 0.205 games pack, then the update to 0.206 and new games packs, then the update to 0.209 and new game packs. Which means the complete set will be going down to bring it up to 0.209, and merge the missing 0.205 games into the main set.

After SNES is done, I'm considering doing handhelds with the exception of the GBA(due to the fuckhueg library) before 5th gen. It would be relatively easy given that any handheld multiplat that is also on a console would not be the best possible version by default.

Alright, Genesis is up. I'll be refreshing the MAME set now, and move onward to SNES once the MAME set is squared away.
