Fairly unknown gems that are damn fun. Stuff like Trip World, Vigilante 8, Atari Video Cube, The Firemen, etc.

How obscure are you looking to go? For some lesser known but not unheard of ones on the NES there's Shadow of the Ninja, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyle's Quest 2, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu or Totally Rad.

This side scrolling 2D platformer made by Data East. Considering its a licensed game, I am surprised how little its talked about.
Its a neat little game with minor RPG elements. Hawkeye and Captain America play differently with Captain America being stronger and more athletic while Hawkeye having multi directional ranged attacks. Collecting gems allows you to level your characters which increases the damage you can give and take.

There's a few on there I haven't tried so I'll have to give them a shot, I can't imagine how anyone managed to enjoy Psycho Fox though.

I like this game a lot, the space-station docking sequence took me by surprise when I first played it.
