I know what you mean, and it's not just forums, either. Pretty much retro gaming community I've been to (save for this one, of course) always has the same types of people, be it a forum, imageboard, IRC channel, whatever. You've seen one, you've seen them all.
One weird thing I've noticed is that the more obscure the community's focus, the more obnoxious its members are. NES/SNES hipsters are annoying, but they're really tame compared to PC88/X68K/MSX/etc. circles, where you start running into goons/neofags and all the bullshit they bring wherever they go.

Not weird at all; it's a common phenomenon (not just in gaming, but in all different kinds of fandoms). People who are into very niche interests often become bitter about the fact that their hobby isn't appreciated. People who are into niche things that later turned mainstream become especially bitter because they think normies ruined it and took away everything that made it good (Nintendo-era Final Fantasy fans are a well-known example).
Obviously, not everyone who's into obscure hobbies is a dickhead. But I think that if a person has any latent dickhead tendencies, being part of a community that's into niche stuff will usually bring those tendencies out.

I find the opposite is true, niche interests don't make people bitter it's the mainstream that does. A lot of bitterness in my hobby comes from having quality taken away in order to appeal to people who clearly don't care.
I'll use /m/ as an example. Pre-Gurren lagann and Gundam 00 you saw a lot of discussion of older titles and the focus was on the story and the robots. Post these series you saw the shift become more more feminine in that it focused on the characters and ignored most of the setting. This really peaked when Build Fighters aired and the entire thread became circle jerking over the white haired girl and constant waifu posting. It got to the point where you went to the thread to see the cameos you couldn't recognise yourself and then ran away as fast as possible. The community became something completely different where the central focus became secondary to other things. At this point I've pretty much completely disengaged from the mecha community because there's no longer any focus on the stuff I like. I see the same stupid circle jerk over waifus and new fags with no appreciation for anything older than digital animation. I don't want any damn part of that and I tell those people to go fuck themselves whenever I encounter them.

Old gaming attracts a lot of mentally ill people and shut ins. They destroy their lives playing games and hiding from the people who bullied them for being fucked in the head. This builds up to self hatred and a disconnect of the physical from their mental state. They end up wanting to be someone else, any one else but who they are. This then develops into full blown body dysmorphia where they feel their body is not the one they belong in as a means of self protection.
Think of it like multiple personality disorder but as a single personality. When you get fucked up enough your brain splits into what it needs to survive, In this case instead of a tough persona it creates a completely alternative persona which hates the original self and wants to move as far away as possible from it. Think of it like fight or flight and the brain picks flight.
Retro gaming also tends to be cheap so that these fuck ups can afford it. Any PC from the last decade will emulate all the retro consoles. Just emulate shit and you have the full library of multiple machines.
