In case it slipped by anyone, try Hyper Metroid. Most hacks of SM are okay, but don't really compare to the original too well. Hyper made it hard for me to go back to the regular version because of how smooth it works. It also doesn't require any difficult tricks or exploits.

I actually have, and its REALLY powerful stuff, and for the most part, easy for beginners to pick up and try, so long as you use the iimarck.us forums for reference and help. Apparently it is easier to use if you work a Linux, although I used Windows environment with it and it worked just fine. Almost all of it is quite easy, and there is an IRC chat that has a lot of people on at all times who may help with any questions you got. 10/10 Gen 1 hacking has VASTLY improved since it came into existence.

Really? Pokemon Brown is one of the most famous ROM Hacks. You gotta try it. Its not /extreme/ in difficulty, although the difficulty IS higher than the older Pokemon Games (slightly higher than, say, Platinum, considered the hardest of the MON games).
Brown is a Pokemon Red hack, has all the good ol Gen 1 muzak and jraphics, and also has some Gen 2 and Gen 4 MONS added into it if you play the updated 2009 or 2012 versions. There is no physical special split, although it is an amazing game and over all objectively one of the best Pokemon ROM hacks. You should play it, especially since the creator is going to release the sequel to it in Decemberish (Pokemon Prism, a Crystal hack)

Dratini evolves into Dragonair at 34 now and then 67 for Dragonite. They're mostly just raised 5 to 15 levels higher for evos but for the fossil ones they went full retard for some reason;
