So I've been playing Mother 1 recently, up to the 5th melody, since the Mother series is hands down my favourite of all time, and I've gone through at least 4 playthroughs of Mother 3. Anyone else feel strongly about this series?

Mother 1 is my favorite. I don't really know why but there's something about it. Shit's pretty comfy. Also I'll take some of that red weed if you're not using it.

This subject interests me, as I've not played this one.
Are the translation patches out there fully acceptable?
I don't know any nipponese.

The first game was fully officially translated but not released. There is a dump of it and if you're a cuck you can also buy it digitally on the Wii U now if you own one. Mother 2 is on the SNES and Mother 3 has been translated better than any official work could be for about 10 years.

I suggest either Virtual Console Wii U for Mother 1 and 2 or just emulating them normally. As for Mother 3, the only way to go English is through emulation normally. Mother 2 (Earthbound) is expensive as fuck in English and is the only game of the series to have an international release.
While it does not matter what order you play them in, there are very minor, non-story related references to Mother 2 in Mother 3. These games have a heavy impact on my life (especially 3), and I urge you to play them as soon as you possibly can. They're a major fuckin trip.

Does mother 3 still have that thing where the timing is different for doing beat combos when emulated rather than played on something like a flashcard on the gba?

I think so, although honestly you dont really need those unless you're just SUPER awful. I never mastered them and I beat it multiple times. Just remember to use a good amount of Offense Up/Downs and Defense Up/Downs on the boss fights (that includes using the Thief Tools).

I'm really shit at it anyway and using an emulator makes it even worse. I've been told it's perfectly beatable otherwise.

It too is my fav series, OP. There is something really magical about it

Play the fan translated GBA version of MOTHER 1 by Tomato(same guy who translated M3), it has much better dialogue and a minimap function as well as better balance. Disregard ANYONE who recommends the official release or the NES rom.

If you want more of a challenge and superiour music quality, then the NES one is the one to use, although there ain't nothing wrong with not playing that one.
And yes definitely, it is the textbook definition of fucking /magical/.
