Just whatever you think looked cool, either on straightforward artistic merits, or representing the game's content, or whatever. No accounting for taste.

It should be obvious to even the most uncultured plebeian that DinoCity's cover is truly the pinnacle of SNES-based artwork, capturing as it does the camaraderie of the main characters and, especially, their 'tude. They are perennially tubular, lazing around in their beanies, leather jackets, and sneakers; nonchalantly using a skateboard as mere furniture: "Hey man," they seem to say to the passerby who always saw this in the video shop, but opted to rent Super Metroid for the twelfth time instead, "We might finish those six awesome levels of platforming, or, you know, whatever".

Psygnosis used to have some fantastic covers, most notably the Shadow of the Beast games with their Roger Dean artwork

I still marvel at the attention to detail put into the Stratos to this day.

It helps that it's an unconventional-but-still-attractive model; but you're totally right: simple, but very, very elegant.

From the manual of Space Invaders for the Atari 400 and 800 computers. Dunno if it was on the box itself, and the carts were plain text and line affairs.

That's pretty damn plush.
It got me thinking of a 2600 cover that I remember always stood out for me.
>mfw I never realized how shitty everything surrounding the artwork was on the Strayan version

Imagic always went weird with package design, and their cartridges were like, repurposed Intellivision carts. Those chrome boxes always got dinged up…

Man, how I miss traditional art on video game covers. Hiroaki Shioya's works are pretty good:

Fuck this game right in its ass. I played this as a kid and couldn't make heads nor tails of it when I left the starting area. Fly around, go past the edge of the map, get completely fucking lost, end of game.
