Mark Brunner

Former Senior Advisor

South Asia Center

Mark Brunner was a senior advisor at the South Asia Center. He joined The Cohen Group after serving as the Senior Advisor to Senator Mark Warner of Virginia from 2009 to 2015 following a 20-year career in the United States Navy where he served as a Navy pilot. During his tenure in the Navy, he also served on the staff of the NATO Military Committee, as the Defense Policy Advisor at the US Mission to the European Union, and as the Military Legislative Assistant and Defense Fellow to Senator John Warner.

As Senior Advisor, Mr. Brunner was Senator Warner’s principal counselor on defense, foreign policy, and energy issues. He also served as the Director of the Senate India Caucus during Senator Warner’s tenure as the Caucus Co-Chair. During this time, Mr. Brunner was instrumental in growing the Caucus to become the largest country caucus in the US Senate, and refocusing its efforts to address issues of importance for US-India foreign policy and business-to-business relationships. He created a partnership between the National Basketball Association and the India Caucus to bring basketball to India, and developed a landmark agreement, signed by the Indian government, American community colleges, and private sector foundations to construct new schools in India for vocational skills training.

Mr. Brunner co-led the creation of a National Commission on Energy Efficiency, and he served as Senator Warner’s designated representative to the commission, which produced a blueprint to double US energy productivity by 2030. The plan was endorsed by President Obama in the 2013 State of the Union address, and he was recognized as an “Energy Hero” by the Alliance to Save Energy and inducted into the Energy Efficiency Hall of Fame. He led the Virginia Congressional delegation’s defense policy efforts with a bipartisan approach to promote a Virginia defense industry that receives over $50 billion in annual Pentagon spending. Mr. Brunner created a comprehensive plan to reform Arlington National Cemetery by forming a private sector task force that provided a pro bono assessment of the technology challenges at Arlington. He was recognized with Northern Virginia Technology Council’s “Chairman’s Award” for this innovative solution.

Prior to working for Senator Warner, Mr. Brunner served for 20 years in the Navy, retiring at the rank of Commander. He flew several types of aircraft and helicopters, deploying multiple times on ships including the USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64) to the Arabian Gulf, where he led the first H-60B Seahawk armed helicopter deployment on an aircraft carrier. During his last Arabian Gulf deployment, he flew over 50 combat zone missions, including many low-altitude flights at night with US Navy SEALS intercepting Iraqi vessels. Later in his Navy career, he served as the Military Legislative Assistant and Legislative Fellow for the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator John Warner, and as one of the Navy’s senior representatives to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees for aviation funding and all classified programs.

A recognized leader in technology and cybersecurity, he drafted legislative provisions adopted in the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) and was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to serve as the Special Advisor to the Virginia Commission on Cybersecurity. He co-led a US Senate Task Force that convened federal agency CIO’s and top technology companies to develop innovative practices for the government to rapidly procure advanced commercial technology.

Mr. Brunner currently serves on the Advisory Boards of the US Senate Cybersecurity Caucus, The College of William & Mary Law School’s Veterans Legal Clinic, and BlueCat Networks. He earned a BA in Political Science from Tulane University, an MA in National Security Affairs from Georgetown University (highest honors), and is currently pursuing a PhD. He also was awarded the US Navy’s Superior Public Service Award by the Secretary of the Navy.

Q Research General #3394: Comfy Covfefe Edition

The muh Russia narrative is downright embarrassing at this point.

A time line from Deplore Able: CNN story came out on March 5, 2017.

March 6, 2017 Grassley letter to Comey asking a bunch of questions including:

5. Were any other government officials outside of the FBI involved in discussing or authorizing

the agreement with Mr. Steele, including anyone from the Department of Justice or the Obama

White House? If so, please explain who was involved and provide all related records. 6. How did the FBI first obtain Mr. Steele's Trump investigation memos? Has the FBI obtained

additional memos from this same source that were not published by Buzzfeed? If so, please

provide copies.

7. Has the FBI created, or contributed to the creation of, any documents based on or otherwise

referencing these memos or the information in the memos? If so, please provide copies of all

such documents and, where necessary, clarify which portions are based on or related to the

memos.

March 7, 2017 Steele to Ohr: "Would it be possible to speak later today. We're very concerned by the Grassley letter."

March 7, 2017 Adam Waldman texts to mark warner a link to Wikileaks Vault 7 release.

March 8, 2017 mark warner to Adam Waldman: "Want to connect think there may be more to come.

March 8, 2017 Waldman to warner: "There is more to come.Just tell me where and when.

March 9, 2017 Waldman to warner: "DOJ called me today; we will talk at 530.

March 11, 2017: Waldman to warner: "Ps, on the question discussed, they already are aware. I have lots of other dealings with DOJ relating to my RUS client."

March 17, 2017: Steele to Ohr text. Steele freaking out about Comey testimony to Congress on Monday. "Hoping that important firewalls hold."

March 17, 2017: Wolfe leaks FISA warrant to Ali Watkins

March 17, 2017: warner to Waldman: "Just tried to call but now going into skif (sic)." [Bet I can guess what he was looking at in the scif.]

March 20, 2017: Comey testifies to Congress.

March 27, 2017: Evelyn Farkas MSNBC interview. On national TV Evelyn explains how Obama Administration gathered info on Trump and campaign, etc. She doesn't want Trump people to know how they managed to do it. [Stupid is as stupid does.]

March 29, 2017: Hannity exposes Evelyn Farkas.

March 30, 2017: Waldman to warner "Chris is concerned about the leaks yesterday…."

Lots of stuff happened in March 2017. Steel is freaking out about being exposed. Leaks of information begin to spring from firewalls. Drip, drip, drip…. Soon the flood will come? Let us hope.

Same Adam Waldman?

Depp Trial AND RussiaHoaxGate

https://www.newsweek.com/who-adam-waldman-lobbyist-vladimir-putin-testifying-johnny-depp-amber-heard-trial-1708131

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/democratic-sen-mark-warner-texted-with-russian-oligarch-lobbyist-in-effort-to-contact-dossier-author-christopher-steele

With Johnny Depp's defamation trial continuing to dominate headlines, one of the witnesses expected to testify has become a controversial figure in the proceedings.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp, 58, has filed a $50-million lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who he has accused of defaming him in her 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post, where she said she was a survivor of domestic abuse.

Despite Depp not being named in the article, his lawyers have argued that it was clear Heard, 36 was referring to the actor. Heard is counter-suing Depp for $100 million.

During proceedings at the Fairfax County Circuit Courthouse, Depp and Heard have accused one another of domestic abuse. Both have denied the allegations.

NEWSWEEK NEWSLETTER SIGN-UP >

As the trial draws toward its conclusion, one of the witnesses expected to take the stand and testify is Adam Waldman, who has started to make headlines of his own.

Who Is Adam Waldman?

Waldman is a Washington, D.C.-based attorney and lobbyist, who reportedly has ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle.

The former chairman and president of Endeavor Group was previously a part of the ongoing case pro hac vice (for this case only) from September 2019.

NEWSWEEK SUBSCRIPTION OFFERS >

However, Courthouse News Service reported in October 2020 that Waldman was thrown off the case by Judge Bruce White, amid allegations that he had allegedly leaked confidential information covered under a protective order to the press.

Among the information covered in the protection order was Heard and Depp's private information, such as medical records, passport numbers and phone numbers.

Adam Waldman and Johnny Depp

Attorney and lobbyist Adam Waldman (L) is among those expected to testify at Johnny Depp's (R) defamation trial. Depp is seeking $50 million in alleged damages to his career over an op-ed his ex-wife, Amber Heard, wrote for the Washington Post in 2018.

Heard and her team contended that Waldman leaked information to the press "on at least two occasions" as they moved for sanctions against the attorney.

Per Courthouse News Service, the actress accused Waldman of sharing surveillance pictures, audio recordings, and declarations from third-party witnesses to websites and Twitter, "leading readers and potential jurors to believe that these declarations are somehow official case documents, which they are not."

However, while Waldman's pro hac vice status was revoked, the judge declined to issue a gag order against the attorney, it was reported at the time.

Ties to Putin's Inner Circle

Waldman has also been linked to Vladimir Putin, who himself has dominated headlines over the past few months due to his ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

According to Insider, Waldman filed paperwork with the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2009, indicating that he would be working with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, providing "legal advice on issues involving his U.S. visa as well as commercial transactions."

Deripaska's U.S. visa was revoked in 2006 amid concerns about his links to organized crime.

Months after he started working with Waldman, Deripaska was allowed to make two visits to the U.S. in 2009. There is no suggestion Waldman has any connection to any form of organized crime.

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Adam Waldman has worked with oligarchs who have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose invasion of Ukraine has dominated headlines in recent months. Putin is pictured speaking during the Summit of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the Grand Kremlin Palace, May,16,2022, in Moscow, Russia.

GETTY IMAGES

According to Insider, Deripaska met with FBI agents about an unspecified criminal investigation. The Wall Street Journal reported that Deripaska also had meetings with Morgan Stanley, General Motors, and Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

Waldman and his company reportedly received "a monthly retainer of $40,000" for working with Deripaska, who he said was not under the direction or supervision of any foreign government.

In October 2010, Waldman then indicated in another filing that he would be working with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, "gathering information and providing advice and analysis as it relates to the U.S. policy towards the visa status of Oleg Deripaska."

As part of this work, Waldman said Endeavor would "engage in correspondence and meetings with U.S. policymakers" about Deripaska's visa.

Both Deripaska and Lavrov have this year been hit with sanctions in the U.S. and U.K., respectively, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Visits to Julian Assange

The Guardian reported in 2018 that according to visitor logs, Waldman visited Julian Assange nine times at the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2017.

At the time, it was not made clear why Waldman had repeatedly visited Assange or whether the meetings had any connection to his Russian ties. Waldman had not registered himself as a lobbyist for Assange.

Assange is wanted in the U.S. on 18 criminal charges in connection with the publication of thousands of leaked documents relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Assange has always maintained that he did nothing wrong.

Julian Assange

Adam Waldman paid several visits to Julian Assange while he was holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London back in 2017. The WikiLeaks founder is pictured speaking to reporters in front of a Don McCullin Vietnam war photograph at The Front Line Club on July 26, 2010 in London.

PETER MACDIARMID/GETTY IMAGES

Last month, a British court ruled that Assange be extradited to the U.S from the U.K, a British court ruled last month, meaning he could face a 175-year prison sentence if convicted on espionage charges.

British Home Secretary Priti Patel will now decide whether to authorize Assange's extradition. Assange's lawyers had until May 18 to make submissions to her to try to stop the move.

Assange is currently being held in the high-security Belmarsh Prison in London. He has been held there since being taken out of the Ecuadorian embassy, where he had taken refuge three years ago.

Jennifer Howell Declaration

Another factor that has kept social media abuzz in recent days is the resurfacing of a declaration from Jennifer Howell, founder of the non-profit The Art of Elysium.

Depp fans have been circulating the July 2020 declaration, which alleges that Heard was violent toward her sister, Whitney Henriquez, and her ex-husband, Depp.

Although some versions of the document bear a Fairfax County Government letterhead, it has not been admitted as a piece of evidence in the trial.

Heard's lawyers have argued that it was falsely procured and passed off as evidence to mislead the public. The document's claims have not been verified and the declaration has not been admitted as trial evidence.

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner texted with Russian oligarch lobbyist in effort to contact dossier author Christopher Steele

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/democratic-sen-mark-warner-texted-with-russian-oligarch-lobbyist-in-effort-to-contact-dossier-author-christopher-steele

https://www.scribd.com/document/371101285/TEXTS-Mark-Warner-texted-with-Russian-oligarch-lobbyist-in-effort-to-contact-Christopher-Steele

EXCLUSIVE – Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee who has been leading a congressional investigation into President Trump's alleged ties to Russia, had extensive contact last year with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch who was offering Warner access to former British spy and dossier author Christopher Steele, according to text messages obtained exclusively by Fox News.

"We have so much to discuss u need to be careful but we can help our country," Warner texted the lobbyist, Adam Waldman, on March 22, 2017.

"I'm in," Waldman, whose firm has ties to Hillary Clinton, texted back to Warner.

Steele famously put together the anti-Trump dossier of unverified information that was used by FBI and Justice Department officials in October 2016 to get a warrant to conduct surveillance of former Trump adviser Carter Page. Despite the efforts, Steele has not agreed to an interview with the committee.

Secrecy seemed very important to Warner as the conversation with Waldman heated up March 29, when the lobbyist revealed that Steele wanted a bipartisan letter from Warner and the committee’s chairman, North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr, inviting him to talk to the Senate intelligence panel.

Throughout the text exchanges, Warner seemed particularly intent on connecting directly with Steele without anyone else on the Senate Intelligence Committee being in the loop – at least initially. In one text to the lobbyist, Warner wrote that he would "rather not have a paper trail" of his messages.

An aide to Warner confirmed to Fox News that the text messages are authentic. The messages, which were obtained from a Republican source, are all marked "CONFIDENTIAL" and are not classified. They were turned over to the Senate panel by Waldman last September.

Waldman, who did not return calls seeking comments, runs the Endeavor Group in Washington.

Waldman is best known for signing a $40,000 monthly retainer in 2009 and 2010 to lobby the U.S. government on behalf of controversial Russian billionaire Oleg V. Deripaska. Deripraska had his visa revoked by the State Department in 2006 because of charges, which he has denied, that he has organized crime ties.

An aide to Burr, the Republican chairman, told Fox News that Burr was aware of the "contact" Warner made with Steele's representative but added, "I don't believe he was aware of the content of the text messages" initially.

The senators released a joint statement to Fox News stressing they are working together, while blasting the “leaks of incomplete information.”

They said the committee has been in possession of this material for several months and committee investigators have pursued all relevant investigative leads related to the material.

"From the beginning of our investigation we have taken each step in a bipartisan way, and we intend to continue to do so," Warner and Burr said in the statement. "Leaks of incomplete information out of context by anyone, inside or outside our committee, are unacceptable."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., another member of the committee, tweeted Thursday night that Warner "fully disclosed this to the committee four months ago." He added that the disclosure "has had zero impact on our work."

The conversation about Steele started on March 16, 2017, when Waldman texted, "Chris Steele asked me to call you."

Warner responded, "Will call tomorrow be careful."

The records show Warner and Waldman had trouble connecting by phone. On March 20, Warner pressed Waldman by text to get him access to Steele.

"Can you talk tomorrow want to get with ur English friend," Warner texted.
