Yuri is more of a feeling than a fact. It can vary from platonic love to actual sex. The key is that it's girls loving girls (or a girl loving another girl in the case of unrequited love). It doesn't matter whether they consummate the love physically with kissing and sex or not. Marimite is a show which demonstrates how pure yuri can be in that all of the love between the girls (with the exception of Rosa Gigantea) is completely platonic.

So if two women were happily married to men, but had a platonic love that is completely non-sexual, that would qualify?
The girls have to want to date, hug, kiss and hold hands etc. A developing romance involves increasing physical intimacy eventually leading to sexual contact. It doesn't need to be "consummated" within the work itself, just shown that the characters are on their way. The mildest example would be like in the Wataten OVA when Noa tells Miyako that she should save Hana's "do anything coupon" for 5-10 years.
You have to have this idea that something happening in the future is reasonably likely. If you look into the future of Marimite, hetero marriage is far more likely, Sei excepted.
I like Marimite enough for what it is. The characters are shippable, their relationships are enjoyable to watch, and it certainly had influence on the yuri genre. However 'platonic yuri' is a contradiction in terms.

No, since the women are obviously not exclusively in love with each other. I also find it hard to imagine such a situation, if the two women ended up falling in love with each other they would probably not be happy with their marriage and want to go off on their own. I would agree with this. However, it doesn't make what occurs during the time when they are schoolgirls not yuri, simply because later on they conceivably marry. Unless marriage actually occurs within the story, it doesn't matter within the context of the story.
Perhaps I am being too narrow in my view. What some people think of as yuri hentai I would just regard as, depending on the work, lebsian or yuri. Yuri to me has much to do with atmosphere and the way the girls interact, not just sexual attraction between girls.
