It's apparent that gold was incredibly important to the ancients, they were mining it all over Earth.
Different civilizations that never had any contact (supposedly), all mined gold and crafted objects of significance with it.
Gold would have served very little purpose to people of ancient times.
It doesn't make any sense why they would focus so much time and energy on acquiring it, unless as a means to offer tribute to their gods, or as you say, to create items for themselves that imply authority.

Visualy, from a broader and more general view, they look like the remains of gigantic trees…consistently.
I don't think it's plates pushing that TOTALLY form mountains, I think giant trees were lopped, felled and have been contributing to the landscaped for many many moons.
