Well I found out some interesting news yesterday while lurking some SW forums. Kathleen Kennedy was revealed to be the one directing and picking the designs for all the new aliens in the DU (I like that term, short and simple) which is why they all look like shit. Apparently she wants them all to look sickly and pink like that frill shark video or to resemble squids or have lots of tentacles.

That about sums it up pretty well. With all the new aliens, it feels like they all came crom the same planet and degenerated into different ugly offshoots, unlike before where each alien truly felt "alien" from one another. Like there's no way they could share any ancestry. Only one in your picture that looks more like a classic alien is the frog at the bottom and the blue guy with the long snout, but he just looks like a leathery kubaz. And the alien in the third place just looks like a shittier whiphid.

They created a basic Abednedo design that looks like a cross between a Selkath, an Ithorian and a human for TFA and then reused it dozens of times by morphing them in bizarre ways until nobody can tell it's the same species unless Lucasfilm says so. Audiences probably thought there were way more "new" alien designs in these movies than there actually are because of this.
A lot of Abednedos are named after Beastie Boys songs because of Abrams being unimaginative and relying on pop culture references to pad his world building.
