We''re reading submissions as I type… It ended up being a job for two editors. I like the prequels more than anything else in Star Wars honestly they are just so expensive, so technically perverse, and weird

FYI the point about us not being rigorous enough in our inquiry into what the experience of film/media in general is doing to our internal narrative is apt. I had been looking for a way to describe what you mention for a while now. We're all protagonists of a sort, and it is worrying to see just how much of an impact media can have on the internal structure of our most personal desires and thoughts towards our lived experience and the future.

About a year ago I used to post on this board criticisms of the prequels, and while I still feel they are movies with flaws that could have been better: Fuck it. The prequels are masterpieces rich with life and creativity compared to everything Disney touches. I've learned to stop worrying and love the Jar Jar.

You know, I think it's time to reclaim Jar-Jar. He's not that bad. He even has a few fun scenes. I really like the scene where he greets the R2 droids on-board the ship. It's just a small moment, but I find it endearing. It shows that he's not above trying to strike up a friendship with even the lowliest of creatures.

jar jar's only problems besides the retarded dialogue, the toilet humor and goofy design is that his character wasn't used to a fuller extent, and shit just magically works out for him. george tried the comic relief of the droids in a single character mixed and it came out half-assed.

a while back i was thinking how TPM could be improved, and what i thought would work better for jar-jar would be that the gungans are hunted to almost extinction via a genocide campaign launched by the naboo, and despite their past history they still fight the droid army as redemption and honor etc,
it also involved some physical redesigns and of course losing the stupid voice shit

Isn't there some EU material which states that Gungans as a species suffer from long-term memory loss. Also I think its written the Naboo carried out genocides for land clearing against the Gungans but because of their disability a genocide perpetrated against them is forgotten in a couple generations. The Gungans aren't even natives to Naboo but were brought by some other ancient species to the planet, the Gungans though start become space faring after TPM with the help of Naboo engineers.

How can forgiven imply forget without actually forgetting? The old saying "forgive and forget" implies forgiving and forgetting aren't mutually inclusive or either term would be interchangeably.

Well, if you want to get pedantic…
There doesn't need to be an actual, conscious forgiveness for a crime or a wrong for it to become irrelevant. If someone cuts you off on the freeway, are you still fuming about the next day, or even the next hour? No, you've already forgotten about it. You still have the memories, but you aren't constantly thinking about them, and they don't affect you emotionally, because you don't give a shit anymore. I assume that's what is meant here, "pass from memory" is just when the other gungans stop giving a shit about whatever you've done, because it was a long time ago and they have other things to worry about.

Jar Jar was never that bad. A goofy alien in a Star Wars movie. Wow.
Jar Jar was honed in on by two kinds of people. Mental adolescents who want everything they like to be more "mature" so they don't feel embarrassed about liking it, and people for whom the movie just didn't click, but who couldn't articulate why, similar to how the structural problems of RotJ get blamed on "teddy bears lol".

There are more problems with JarJar. Aside from the weird mannerism of the king, all the other Gungans are fairly straight forward, so he stands out doubly. Its clear George is extremely fond of the character by making him the "key" to advance the plot in so many scenes which invokes the hatred reserved for the teacher's pet or the parents favorite son. There's also the fact that his speech is almost incomprehensible but still based on english which makes it very strenuous to listen to him if you are actually trying to understand what he's saying. He also sounds like a space Jamaican which makes TPM the niggest out of the prequels.
It's also just bad writing to have a heavy joke character like that in a story that already has the perfect comedic relief built in, ANAKIN. If the little shit had been written a bit better he should've provided more than enough cute and humorous moments in conjunction with the two Jedi's. JarJar was too much because there already was one joke character with the little whiz kid and two were one too many.

Prequels weren't widely hated before RLM. They were considered inferior to the originals but for the most part, the majority of the hate for them came from elitist idiots. Everyone else was just kind of content with "eh, they're not amazing, they are just kind of mediocre". Most of the hate came from misplaced expectations, like how people hated prequel Anakin because they expected the guy that turned into Darth Vader to be some kind of uber-Chad that kicked ass and broke hearts wherever he went, instead of a mentally unstable, socially awkward weirdo that pined after a space jewess that was already menopausal when he reached young adulthood. This is of course forgetting that Darth Vader wasn't really that badass beyond the first film, he was basically the Emperor's bitch.

I'm rewatching the whole series for the first time in a while, and the hate really is unwarranted.
I still think Jar Jar is a garbage character, and would need to be redone from the ground up for the character to work, but a lot of the complaints just don't hold up.
The moaning about Anakin's awkwardness, and trying to criticize Hayden's acting, particularly fall flat. It's easily apparent that it is intentional, and when viewed as intentional it's completely fine.
If it were bad acting, you wouldn't have more subtle moments like this one. In just that change of expression we see reflected the feelings that have been building up in Anakin of being held back, with what was meant as a compliment turning into a backhanded insult as he feels talked down to.
That aside, has this galaxy not invented the bra or something?

Jar Jar is fine if you lean towards the theory that he is actually Darth Plagueis and was originally meant to be Anakin's arch-enemy instead of Count Jewku as well as the overarching Big Bad of the prequels. Which I honestly do now. Before it seemed kind of fanciful but upon more research it actually does make quite a bit of sense and also makes the prequels line up more thematically with the originals as per Lucas' insistence on "pottery".
