the thing about Filoni that not many people realize, is that his defense force is worse than the man himself. If he didn't have this poisonous, undeserved "saviour of star wars" public image, we wouldn't really care that much. The problem arises when TCW is presented as some kind of "superior" replacement for the prequels, or the preceding clone wars multimedia project.
Anyway you know where this is going on so I'll just say it, I don't hate Filoni. I don't like his attitude, I'm not sure I like how he interpreted Lucas and he doesn't seem that trustworthy. I don't like Rebels and I haven't kept up with his shit in nu-LFL as I've only seen TFA and that was enough. I don't like his obsession with wolves. He's a weird fuck, but I don't really hate him. Since Lucas did hand pick him, I trust it was an intelligent choice. There could have probably been worse showrunners to choose from. And as for TCW, if you look at the show in a vacuum, there's really nothing wrong with it. I can be mad at the damage it did to the continuity, but the show itself? I don't hate it. It's pretty enjoyable. I would have preferred the originally planned approach however (from what I remember reading/hearing about it) with somewhat of a focus on EU integration instead of trampling all over it and not even trying.

Anyway, "what went wrong" with TCW?
This is how I imagine it probably went: Basically, in the planning stages, Filoni and Gilroy and whoever was on the team kept asking Lucas if they were allowed to do this or that and whenever the questions steered toward EU stuff, Lucas probably gives them the "take inspiration if you want, but don't allow your creativity to be stifled. Make it your own" monologue. Filoni really took that last part to his heart, probably because of a big ego or because he's nervous that Lucas-senpai thinks he doesn't have balls and that he made a mistake hiring him. So literally throughout the show we have many situations where we could have had seemless integration with the clone wars EU and if you watch the behind the scenes material, it occasionally gets brought up and Filoni will always have an explanation ready as to why the EU choice wasn't the right choice or how he tried to compromise or whatever. One of the worst, most non-sensical examples were regarding Grievous' cyborg transformation–as to whether or not he actually wanted the "upgrades" or if he were forced to take them. It was one of those cases where you didn't even need to call Lucas for help, since the team already seemed to know about the generally accepted, cool, tragic EU story. Anyway that's where it gets annoying, because they know this, they know the facts, yet they're so devilish that they'll call Lucas on purpose (who probably has more important things on his mind rather than autistic EU knowledge). So they call him to confirm if the EU version is what he had envisioned or just to see what he thinks, and then Lucas gives them something (can't remember what) maybe an idea–good or bad, doesn't matter because at this point they're (they as in Filoni) are not looking for facts, they're looking for an excuse to just not go with the perfectly compatible EU information that they already have. The end result again, iirc, was some kind of "compromise" between EU and Lucas & Filoni (i.e Grievous claiming he wanted the "upgrades" instead of initially despising them like in the EU.. or is he perhaps brainwashed into thinking he wanted them and doesn't remember being blown up?)–even though they had a valid EU connection handed to them on a silver platter and could have avoided all this unnecessary ambiguity. Why? Why did they keep doing this? Filoni keep stuff away from Lucas when they're his additions but when it's from the EU, he double checks it with him with an excuse to do something else. Sometimes it gets even weirder. When Lucas suggested they bring back Maul, Filoni never credited the original EU Visionaries inspiration for the robo-legs. He was sort of pretending it was a new thing and when his co-worker brings up the connection (I think in another episode), he just waves it off and barely acknowledges it. It's very sad, many such cases. Not many people know this, but Rex was originally supposed to be Alpha from the Republic comics and the show was supposed to be more of a literal continuation of the first few seasons of CW2003. I can't remember what my source for this is. Anyway I guess none of it matters now. But yeah, as crazy as it sounds, I still don't hate Filoni. I'm sure Lucas saw the right sensibilities in him that were needed for the project, otherwise he wouldn't have been hired.
You know who I do actually hate though? That loser Pablo Hidalgo. That bald motherfucker would be nowhere without Lucas. He's the definition of a "literally who". The only remotely useful thing he's ever done was the Essential Readers Companion. I also hate people that cite his deleted tweets as an accurate source of information. Kind of sums up the absolute state of disney-canon. He seems like such a cringy tryhard too, it's so fucked up how he's seen as some kind of funny guy by the autistic fans.
