The Thrawn Trilogy is a good place to start if you're new to the EU. After that I'd suggest the X-Wing series.

As long as we're talking about SW books: has anyone read Shadows of Mindor, and if so is it any good?

It's a fine book, has plenty of action while later dabbling into horror. So in other words, like Indiana Jones.

BTW The thrawn trilogy is old meanwhile there are 2017 books Thrawn and Thrawn: Alliances. What about them? Are they good?

It's a reboot of the character that happens in a different continuity entirely. If you want to avoid anything Disney-related, just avoid the new Thrawn stuff and stick with the original. Stick with books that have the word "LEGENDS" on the cover or books that were released before April 25th 2014. All these books happen in the same timeline/continuity called the expanded universe and that also includes the Lucas saga 1-6. This board is essentially an "expanded universe" board so you'll mostly get EU recommendations.

I also recommend the Republic Commando series since that's what got me hooked.

So you want a short book or a short story that's so short it doesn't full qualify as a book?

If you want something short, try the Rebel Force books. Admittedly they are aimed at younger readers, but you do get to see Luke podracing on Muunilinst.

First one was okay. The second one brought back the Vong under a different name and replaced their organic weaponry with generic metal weapons and tech which are "super strong". They're also described as looking less scary now to avoid frightening kids. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Grysk

Those books are still by Zahn, so they're competently written unlike the majority of the nucanon books.

I would still recommend reading the original Thrawn trilogy first.
