This short film. It's just as awful as everything Disney has done. It's a bunch of explosions with no story, it doesn't sound like Star Wars, and if there weren't X-Wings and Tie Fighters it wouldn't look like Star Wars either.
What's the message of this short? Why are there pink haired girls with piercings in the Empire? Who watches Star Wars and is inspired to create mindless violence?

True, but its a fan animation so it shouldn't be judged to harshly. Disney made the exact same thing but they're a big budget company. In short, the fucks at Disney had all the money and influence to make an interesting continuation of SW that could please fans, but instead they could only create shit that was on par with youtube fan content. On the bright side, this thing does portray the Empire as badass unlike with Disney which are just one dimensionally evil. Here they have personalities and goals at least.

For an animation that was worked on by one guy, it's extremely impressive. It having minimal story isn't really a downside, considering this is meant to show off the guys animation skill instead of writing ability. And there's no doubt that it'll still beat out the entirety of that shitty new show Disney is making.
>What's the message of this short?
Disney could have given you animation like this with Rebels and Resistance, but gave you cheap CGI instead.

I don't really like it, either. I don't like the artsyle and I think the movements look really weird.
That being said, I have a huge appreciation for the amount of effort and craftsmanship that went into this thing, and the fact that it was made by one guy is really, really impressive.
Also, it looks better than Resistance, so there's that.

I think it's partially due to how TIE Fighters are made as cheaply as possible, and lack shields, life support, and probably whatever inertial dampener technology more expensive craft have. So having the fighter swerving that way is likely exerting some crazy g-forces. either that, or they're overacting their reaction to that like larpers

Just want to add, maybe you shouldn't look to fiction for messages. Maybe that's why all modern fiction has become propaganda-filled shit.

That's true, perhaps I'm too harsh. It just makes me realize that a lot of people really do view Star Wars as nothing more than explosions in space. No wonder George ended up selling it. He was an artist, making stuff like THX and American Graffiti, and Star Wars was in the same vein, and the masses just didn't get it.

It's just the Empire on a good day, man. Sheesh, not every instance of Star Wars needs to be a Campbellian epic. I don't see you whining about Genndy's work either, as a bunch of that is "just" combat when it's not being artistic and philosophical.

Brainlet if you think there wasn't substance in Genndy's Clone Wars. Anakin's vision, his meetings with Padme, the child on the planet Mace Windu fights the battledroids on, the sheer horror of the Clones being picked off one by one by Greivous and Ventress. There's lots of emotion in that show. This animation is just explosions and rock music. It's basically Top Gun in Space.

Again, George is a director. He puts a camera places. He has no special insight into the world. Enjoy his works but don't base your life around them and search them for universal truths. You will be disappointed if you look for insights into reality from a make believe world.

Entirely missing my point. The point is the fact that it illustrates why George sold the franchise, he was getting sick of "fans" who just wanted explosions and X-wings. He wanted to make people think about philosophy, not just jerk off to lasers.

And he wanted people to jerk off to lasers, too, not just think about philosophy. Both elements are present in the films in spades. And this is not a feature length film. It's a seven minute animation that's meant to focus on one specific thing, and if it tried to stuff a feature length film's worth of content into that timeframe it would have suffered in quality. Tell me, if you're so concerned about philosophy and morality plays: when you watched ANH, did you step out of the theater whenever a battle started, impatiently tapping your foot until the lasers were gone and you could go back to listening dialogue? If no, then shut up and enjoy the damn film. It's good for what it is, it's not pretending to be anything it's not, and the animation quality is quite high for a one-man operation.

In the old EU the reason why Empire switched their fighters was combination of Sienar's clout in political sense thanks to the TIE's predecessor's performance in Clone Wars and TIE's ease of maintenance & superior stackability. Room taken by one ARC or X-wing could host multiple TIE's etc.
Another justification for the lack of shields I remember being used was that the power of fighter weapons had made it obsolete cost/benefit-wise until late into Rebellion priorities started to shift with variants such as TIE Advanced & Defender being made for elite units.
As for their ergonomic issues, TIE's were designed with clone/Jedi pilots in mind who did not complain about that shit.
