Reminder that when A.C. Crispin was doing the Han Solo prequels some editor at LucasArts objected to making explicit that Han Solo was (essentially) a drug dealer and Lucas himself had to step in and say that, yes, spice is narcotics and Han was a spice smuggler, that was the point of his character. I recall it still got toned down in the final books, but only to make the spice he was smuggling (this time) was primarily pharmaceutical but with an illegal recreational market (Like Morphine). Most EU smugglers were just dodging the new Imperial tarifs, but Solo was a spice smuggler.
