>tfw this guy could've been the Thrawn of the prequel era, with bonus Jedi-destroying skills
Just rewatching the 2003 cartoon hurts, knowing that he went from a genius strategist and ultimate Jedi-killing machine to a complete disappointment.
Makes it even worse now that it is no longer canon, and the wheezing loser of the CGI Clone Wars show is the "real" Grievous. Shit, they even lowballed Dooku in that show.
I like him having four arms, though. That was a cool addition. I liked him using his legs in combat too, though. Imagine, six limbs, each a potential weapon.

Would be interesting, but it would look goofy in the big screen. The best Grievous is still the one from the novelization.

Novel Grievous was basically slapping a band-aid on a festering wound and calling it a day. Kinda like the rest of it.

Grievous on EU backstory was simply gold. Actually the description of his relationship with Kummar was leagues better than the Padmé/Sand/Anakin romance/relationship. It was really touching. The paralels with him and Vader were also excellent
And them they changed to make him a sunday morning cartoon villain who chose to became a cyborg just because "durr hurr will became more powerful just because".

I heard that Dave Filoni wanted to make Grievous like the 2003 cartoon but Lucas put his foot down.
Grievous also wasn't that unstoppable. For instance, re-watching Genndy Wars, if you look closely you'll notice that Grievous can't block blaster bolts because he doesn't have the Force-fueled precognition that Jedi/Sith have to do it, so he dodges them instead due to having superhuman speed because cybernetics or outwits his foes because he's a tactical genius.

I don't disagree. Jedi and Sith can access the all pervasive energy that binds life and matter and harmonize with it defy normal limitations or bend it to their wills into something that subverts the normal altogether. That should reasonably put them on a tier of ability vastly superior to those without psychic meta-magic superpowers such that overcoming them without those numerous advantages would be exceptional and heroic. A gunslinger who can outwit and outmaneuver a clairvoyant wizard samurai should not be common or make it without some measure of luck.
But >>6634 brings up a good point too. It was getting to the point where Jedi and Sith had no lack of their own wank. It was a long, crazy ride but somehow things went from it being a huge deal that Sheev could zap Luke with lightning from his fingertips to a canonically weaker Sith just parking his ship in orbit over a planet while he sucked out all its life energy before moving on.

I think the issue of Jedi/Sith wank really started with the EU, particular with the Skywalker family who suddenly started getting all these crazy superpowers and shit. Then you had Anakin's "Chosen One" background, which suddenly made him into a canon demigod. Then Jedi and Sith started to get uninteresting and boring and you started having the "Superman Problem" where the only person that really posed a threat to a Jedi or a Sith was another Jedi or a Sith. So the Jedi/Sith went from wizard ninjas who had all these cool skills and powers but still had to work hard not to die against ordinary goons to virtual superheroes.

Feat wise, Yoda said shit like, “yeah, moving an x-wing is the same as a rock” which meant that crazy shit like pulling a star destroyer out of orbit was now on the table.
But there were counters in the EU like assassin droids, which were so nasty that only Jedi Knights could face one in combat. Grievous epitomizes the non force user warrior, where through tech and skill, you can challenge a Jedi Knight. Two Droidekas can standoff two Jedi.
But Jedi are also supposed to be very rare. Luke tearing shit up on Tatooine makes sense. When you start having thousands of Jedi there’s a problem, although they don’t do well against full armies without support.

I had not seen the 2003 cartoon until just recently. For more than ten years I did not understand why anybody liked Grievous at all. His portrayal in the movie was so ridiculously bad that I wrote him off as a stupid edgelord villain for kids who just wanted to see as many lightsabers on the screen as possible.
Bizarrely, a fucking cartoon short treats the character with more respect than a multimillion-dollar film did. Then I read his Legends wiki article. I don't know if I would go so far as to call him the "Thrawn of the prequels" but holy shit this character's potential was completely wasted.

Pretty much yeah. His treatment of Grievous in that show is unforgivable for me, which is why I will never regard Filoni as /my guy/ Grievous was a massive casualty of TCW to the point where his backstory has been nebulous canon for years even before the Disney buyout. They half assed some bullshit about him choosing to be a cyborg but worded it in such a way that you could easily interpret it as his pride not allowing him to admit he was strong armed into it as in the original shuttle crash origin. And they never expanded on that because even though he was arguably the most important antagonist after Dooku, he only got one episode focused on him very early on in season 1 and an episode in season four (?) where he genocided the nighsisters, his only cool moment in the show. It was shameful.
As a massive Grievous fag and aspiring author I can say the only, ONLY positive thing about the buyout and purge of the EU is that his relative unpopularity will pretty much leave him untouched and maybe one day if my writing takes off I may be able to do him some justice in a "canon" book. If Wendig gets hired they'll basically let anyone go for it so my chances are better than you'd think initially.
Remember this thread, troopers. If a nu-canon author shows up in a few years flagrantly bringing back the best of the old EU, remember it was grievous fag and he is ostensibly /your guy/

I think Grievous' biggest problem remains his appearance in Revenge of the Sith. That kind of pigeon-holed him into the wheezing, cowardly loser role so stuff like Genndy Wars is very much an outlier when it comes to depictions of Grievous. Compare to someone like Ventress, who never appeared in the films and is therefore relatively capable as a villainess since she is a blank slate.
Of course, you could do something like Genndy Wars did with Mace Windu crushing Grievous' chest, thus explaining his future lameness while leaving most of his Clone Wars portrayals open for more badass interpretations but that still kind of has to wrestle around Grievous still being a bit of an idiot and a coward in Episode 3. Also, Anakin never meeting Grievous until Episode 3, unless you do something with Anakin fighting Grievous while in disguise so Grievous still thinks that it's his first time meeting Anakin while Anakin just doesn't bother correcting Grievous.
>>7054
>and an episode in season four (?) where he genocided the nighsisters
Wasn't that the one where Grievous got wrecked by Ventress in 1-on-1? So even then, he didn't really get his moment to shine.

I don't think GenndyWars and ROTS have to be mutually exclusive though. In GenndyWars, Dooku tells Grievous if he is going to beat the best of the Jedi he needs to have them scared, suprised and intimidated. Obviously he's going to faceroll no name knights and padawans, but if you rewatch the show with that in mind, he plays a lot of head games on Hypori and Coruscant before engaging. Obi Wan and Anakin were obviously never taken by suprise, nor were they ever scared of or intimidated by him, so it makes sense he'd bail from those engagements since he knows he's outclassed by force users with thier heads on straight.
And the cowardly portrayal will always directly conflict with the fact that he has a fuck ton of lightsabers, enough to replace the dozens he loses over the war. He's getting them from somewhereso you know he's winning, just off screen

Perhaps the Overton Window is lurching right among regular jack-offs, but media professionals have been so accustomed to leading a cultural narrative and spoonfeeding their sensibilities through control of pop-culture that they just don't know how to cope with the marketplace not aligning with their shepherding anymore.
That's why you see all of this quintupling down and prosecution of even more radical ploys dispensing with anything resembling nuance or subtlety. It's panic mode and mashing the glowing red buttons full propaganda salvos ahead. It happened in the 1980s too as a reaction against Reagnism and Thatcherism, but the 2010s have a cultivated internet that didn't exist then.

Grievous was such a pain in the ass in duel mode. He would pretty much attack non-stop and could block any ranged attacks, so your only tactic was for wait for him to start a combo then stun/lightning blast him or fling explosive shit at him. Forget about close combat engagements, even trying to sneak in a single strike in between his combos would result in your character taking a dozen hits.

A worthy ascension before Filoni's Clone Wars turned him into 80s cartoon Shredder. Then again, Grievous suddenly became a badass again in the cancelled Clone Wars season, so maybe they were actually going to restore him to his former glory… maybe.

I love movie grievous
>YOU FOOL
A good, CONVENIENT explanation for the TCW2008 grievous "wanting to upgrade himself to be deadlier etc" is that they're fake thoughts implanted into him to keep him placated. (In the EU he was initially pissed off at his cyborg body)
Remember that brain chip he has? His handlers were probably able to make small changes/adjustments to him as needed.
So basically none of the Grievous backstories override each other. He's a great character. No point worrying about a "real grievous". It doesn't matter if he's a master jedi-killing machine or a coughing retard; the real grievous was the friends we made along the way.

It's not a bastardisation, it's just another side of grievous's amazing, deep personality that we hadn't seen before. I love campy grievous.

Only time he didn't have four arms was during his first Genndy appearance, but in his second appearance he showed he had four. Other than that, he's always had four arms.

It is. And its an abomination, just like the disgusting anime faggotry above and should be purged.

I've noticed the trend that Disney wants to enforce an idea: evil is always bloodthirsty without reason. Be it Kylo Ren, Snoke, Hux, Tarkin, Vader, Grievous - they all lack reasons for their actions.
In fact, they're just bullies in places of power. Power, power, power…
Same goes for the 'good' guys, though. Jake, Rey, FN-2187, Poe, Leia…
It's like everybody is just a depressed loser with a javascript doing decisions.

to be fair this is something george started, with the black & white perspective. he then said that shit like greed and corruption were the reasons behind it to fill the void, but it was never fully explored until the EU came along.
