For decades Israel has received more U.S. tax money than any other country – on average, about 7,000 times more per capita than to others around the world.

$38 billion package

The current aid to Israel is part of a package promised by the Obama administration in 2016 under which Israel would get $38 billion over the next 10 years – the largest such package in U.S. history.

The aid package works out to $7,230 per minute to Israel, and equals about $23,000 per each Jewish Israeli family of four.

Under the Obama-Netanyahu Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the $3.8 billion per year was to be a ‘ceiling’ – the agreement was that Israel would not ask for more money on top of this annual disbursement.

However, an MOU is a non-binding agreement and can be changed. Therefore, Israel partisans in Congress have introduced legislation that would make it into law – and the legislation before Congress makes the terms even more beneficial to Israel than the MOU.

Under the current bill before Congress, the $38 billion would be a ‘floor’ rather than a ‘ceiling,’ meaning that aid could increase, as it almost always has in the past.

JP reports, however, that some former Israeli diplomats, concerned that Americans suffering under COVID-19 might object, recommend that this year Israel avoid its usual request for more money.

Aid to Israel hurts U.S.

Israel and its partisans claim that U.S. aid to Israel is supposedly good for the U.S. because Israel spends most of the aid money on U.S. weaponry. (All other nations that receive U.S. military aid are required to spend 100 percent of it on U.S. equipment.).

However, if the U.S. wishes to subsidize U.S. companies, the Pentagon and/or other U.S. agencies could simply buy more equipment themselves, and let Israelis use their own money to purchase weaponry.

Similarly, Israel and its advocates often claim that Israel is America’s “aircraft carrier” in the Middle East. However, it is actually American soldiers who have fought and died for Israel through the years.

Aid to Israel is also problematic for other reasons. Israel has a long record of human rights violations, as documented by Human Rights Watch, the Red Cross, Christian Aid, Amnesty International, Oxfam, and numerous other humanitarian agencies.

Israel has also used U.S. aid in ways that violate U.S. laws.

For these reasons, providing Israel with massive amounts of money and weaponry is antithetical to most Americans’ moral and ethical principles.

In addition, such aid creates dangerous hostility to the U.S. Bin Laden, for example, listed U.S. support for Israeli crimes as one of the major reasons for his opposition to the United States.

White House Leaks Draft Plan To Reopen American Economy

As President Trump declared that he would leave the process of reopening the economy up to the states (with input from federal officials, of course), the Washington Post was releasing a 'leaked' report outlining a plan drafted by CDC and FDA that's essentially a guide for local officials about how to go about reopening the economy.

And in contrast to the 'guidelines' released by the governors of California and Oregon, which seemed to imply that the process of reopening the economy could take as long as the rest of the year, if not longer, the administration plan offers a somewhat more realistic timetable.

The plan has been seen and discussed by members of the White House coronavirus task force. But remember, this is only a piece of what is supposed to be a more comprehensive framework that each governor can adjust to their liking. A federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity with WaPo said the final plan will have 8 parts; this document represents only 2 of them.

The first part of the phased reopening would focus on schools, daycares and places where "children are cared for."

The plan lays out three-phases: Preparing the nation to reopen with a national communication campaign and community readiness assessment until May 1. Then, the effort, through May 15, would involve ramping up manufacturing of testing kits and personal protective equipment and increasing emergency funding. Then staged reopenings would begin, depending on local conditions. The plan does not give specific dates for reopenings but specified "not before May 1."

The first priority, according to the CDC response document, is to "reopen community settings where children are cared for, including K-12 schools, daycares, and locally attended summer camps, to allow the workforce to return to work. Other community settings will follow with careful monitoring for increased transmission that exceeds the public health and health care systems."

The process of a managed reopening will take much longer than 30 days: in fact, the administration expects there will be "some level" of government involvement until a vaccine is finally developed.

The document also says that during phased reopenings, it is critical to strictly follow recommendations on hand-washing and wearing face coverings in group settings.

The plan also carries this warning: “Models indicate 30-day shelter in place followed by 180 day lifting of all mitigation results in large rebound curve - some level of mitigation will be needed until vaccines or broad community immunity is achieved for recovering communities.”

A tiered approach is outlined in the document: a "moderate exposure" phase-in for former "hotspots" like New York" and a "low exposure" plan that will take things back to normal more quickly in communities where the virus never really spread widely. In the "moderate" track, schools could reopen, but with certain social distancing rules like no sports, and no assemblies.

Statement by the Secretary-General on the World Health Organization

As I said on 8 April: “The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most dangerous challenges this world has faced in our lifetime. It is above all a human crisis with severe health and socio-economic consequences.

The World Health Organization, with thousands of its staff, is on the front lines, supporting Member States and their societies, especially the most vulnerable among them, with guidance, training, equipment and concrete life-saving services as they fight the virus.

It is my belief that the World Health Organization must be supported, as it is absolutely critical to the world’s efforts to win the war against COVID-19.

This virus is unprecedented in our lifetime and requires an unprecedented response. Obviously, in such conditions, it is possible that the same facts have had different readings by different entities. Once we have finally turned the page on this epidemic, there must be a time to look back fully to understand how such a disease emerged and spread its devastation so quickly across the globe, and how all those involved reacted to the crisis. The lessons learned will be essential to effectively address similar challenges, as they may arise in the future.

But now is not that time.”

As it is not that time, it is also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.

As I have said before, now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences.

‘Presumed Covid-19’: NYC corona-deaths suddenly soar past 10,000 after over 3,700 victims added to list on PROBABLE grounds

Coronavirus deaths in New York City have spiked by over 3,700 after officials tacked on a group of victims merely suspected of having the virus. The city joins a growing list of sites counting “probable” cases as infected.

The additional deaths – 3,778, to be exact – include people who are “presumed to have been infected because of their symptoms and medical history,” according to two sources cited by the New York Times, which reported the deaths on Tuesday. These “probables” bring the total number of casualties for New York City to 10,367 and raise the nation’s total death toll by a whopping 17 percent. Over 26,000 people are now considered to have died with the coronavirus in the US, according to the Times.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio had initially declined to include the “probables” as coronavirus deaths but reportedly changed his mind after a weekend briefing, the sources said, adding that most of the presumed deaths took place in hospitals. While New York has tested more people per capita for coronavirus than anywhere else in the US, it joins several other sites – city health commissioner Oxiris Barbot named Connecticut, Ohio, Maryland, and Delaware – that began reporting “probable” cases as coronavirus deaths this week. Other sites, including California and Seattle, have limited their casualty counts to those that can be confirmed by testing.

Disagreements between local and regional health authorities over the number of coronavirus deaths have also been blamed on the use of “different data systems.” New York City authorities have complained that the state has dragged its feet sharing data from hospitals and nursing homes.

A similar decision to classify cases that haven’t tested positive as coronavirus was reported by the Times earlier this month. The oddly-worded piece claimed “experts said” that “a vast majority of people visiting emergency rooms with flu-like symptoms probably have the coronavirus.” Some city hospitals were no longer even bothering to test for influenza, instead assuming that everyone with flu-like symptoms was a coronavirus patient, an infectious disease specialist told the outlet.

The classification has raised more than a few eyebrows among medical professionals and laypeople alike. Minnesota state senator and physician Dr. Scott Jensen slammed as “ridiculous” the Centers for Disease Control guidelines advising doctors to list cause of death as coronavirus even in the absence of a test. “We are going to undermine the public trust,” he told Fox News last week, warning that the public’s “trust in politicians is already wearing thin.”

Aussie Cops Use Surveillance Helicopter To Track Down Remote Campers

Police in Tasmania are using a surveillance helicopter to track down people camping in remote locations in violation of coronavirus lockdown laws.

“Tasmania Police officers conducting aerial surveillance around the state, including on the North-West Coast located several campsites where people were directed to leave and return home,” reports The Advocate.

“When u social distance so well that the cops have to find u by helicopter,” tweeted Twitter user @PetiteNicoco.

17 people across the state were charged with a lockdown offense in a period of just 24 hours over the Easter weekend.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter “landed near campsites which were viewed from the air” to interrogate campers in the region. Where the chopper couldn’t land, officers were dispatched to the area on foot.

Commander Rob Blackwood called the campers “selfish” for endangering other people during the COVID-19 pandemic despite them literally being around no other people.

“Covert and marked police vehicles, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, will continue to undertake patrols around the state, so if you’re away from your primary residence you can expect police to stop and speak to you about your movements,” Tasmania Police said on their Facebook page.

The practice was denounced by many as absurd overkill given that the campers are hardly posing a threat to anybody.

“That seems like a waste of resources,” responded one Twitter user.

“You will do as commanded, even if you’re already doing it in the woods. Compliance is nonoptional. The state knows what is best, citizen,” commented another.

When asked how soon he expects a vaccine to emerge, Rivkees responds, “Based on what has been reported, probably a year if not longer is what some individuals have talked about.”

At this point, Ferré comes over to Rivkees and whispers a few times in his ear. Rivkees can be heard responding, “Okay,” several times. The second time that Ferré comes over to Rivkees, Rivkees then rises from his chair and then is accompanied out of the room by Ferré.

Israeli companies hit by the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis are eligible for loans and grants not only from local Israeli programs but also from the U.S. businesses aid program as well:

Any company that has operations in the U.S. and employs workers there can apply under the $2 trillion CARES Business Assistance Program that was passed at the end of March. The company does not have to be registered as an American company but only has to have a U.S. subsidiary that pays salaries to U.S. employees.

The most relevant clause for Israeli companies, and especially startups, is the eligibility for loans, some of which may transform into grants under the 7a section of the Small Business Administration plan. Under this section, a company that employs fewer than 500 employees can receive a loan of up to two and a half times the cost of wages paid to its employees up to a ceiling of $10 million. The loans, given at 1% interest rate and based on government collateral, are repayable within two years, with a six month grace period before payments are due. To top things off, the loan may turn into a grant if the company proves that the money received was used to pay salaries and prevented cutting salaries or terminating employees.

Under the auspices of the plan, $350 billion were earmarked for loans and grants to small businesses. Bank of America reported that as soon as the plan went into effect last Monday 177,000 businesses had applied for $32.6 billion in aid. JPMorgan said on Tuesday that it had received 375,000 requests for a cumulative $40 billion. Both these figures already make up a fifth of the program’s budget.

“In this program, it’s all about being first to the prize,” said Attorney Oz Halabi, a partner and head of the U.S. taxation department at the New York office of law firm Pearl Cohen Zedek Latzer Baratz and a former senior official at the Israel Tax Authority. “It is very important to submit applications as soon as possible and to understand that the program is relevant to 99% of Israeli startups,” he added in a conversation with Calcalist on Sunday. “True, there are details that are still unclear, but it is important to go ahead and fill out the forms. Trump himself operates as if he was running a startup: first throwing out an idea and then thinking and formulating the details”. Halabi explains that the $350 billion set aside for the program is not based on any calculation, but rather is simply a figure that was agreed on. Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve has also announced its own $600 billion loan program, but these loans are for larger companies and will not become grants…

“These days cash is king and every Israeli company that employs workers in the U.S. should have no reason not to apply,” Yifat Oron, CEO of LeumiTech, the bank’s technology arm, told Calcalist. “This is essentially a grant with which to pay salaries and that is significant.”

There can be little doubt that this loophole was intentionally put in the bailout agreement so that Israeli companies could take advantage of it, despite the fact that there are similar bailout programs already in Israel for Israeli companies.

The fact that virtually all Israeli start-up companies will qualify for this loan/grant money is well beyond coincidence.

And because these Israeli companies have insider help applying early, many of them will get this free money while actual American small business will not.

And the idea that the U.S. taxpayers are essentially subsidizing Israeli companies with virtually no strings attached shows us the depth of the parasitical relationship between Israel and the U.S.

Need we ask if any such program exists in Israel where foreign companies with subsidiaries in Israel will be given millions in free bailout money?

Technology and money flow only one way in this relationship and its from America to Israel. And if we’re lucky, Israel will allow us to buy back the technology we financed and engineered, such as the ‘Iron Dome’ missile systems.

And if you’ve got a problem with giving all this free money to Israeli companies, then you’re probably an ‘antisemite’ who will face jail time for daring to criticize Israel — if certain lawmakers and the ADL get their way.

Don’t trust Apple or Google with coronavirus data, says German app developer

A German app developer has warned that the Covid-19 pandemic gives Silicon Valley tech giants perfect cover to suck up personal data. However, while the government may intervene, the tech firms aren’t known for listening.

Apple and Google unveiled an app last week that uses bluetooth connections to trace the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Put simply, the app tracks whether a smartphone user has come in contact with another, infected, user. Similar apps rolled out in South Korea and Singapore have been credited with arresting the spread of the deadly pathogen.

In Europe, the rollout of such apps has been met with privacy concerns. "We do not think it is the best solution that Google and Apple own the server on which all the contacts plus the medical status of citizens around the world are uploaded," Julian Teicke, a leader of Germany's Healthy Together startup initiative, told Reuters on Tuesday.

"What we need is an independent party that allows governments some kind of control over what happens with this medical and contact data," he added.

The data collected will not be stored on a physical server in a physical location, but in cloud storage, where the firms insist it will be scrubbed of all personal signifiers and deleted after 14 days. By contrast, a German led platform — The Pan-European Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (PEPP-PT) platform — would store data in a centralized location, and would comply with Europe’s GDPR data protection laws. Several European countries, including France, Germany and Ireland, are developing apps on the PEPP-PT platform.

However, almost every single smartphone in Europe uses Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS operating systems, and the two companies have said that the contact-tracing functionality will eventually be built into these operating systems by default.

The U.S. Coast Guard seized more than 1,700 pounds of cocaine worth about $29 million dollars last week from a fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Central America.

Coast Guard sailors worked with Costa Rican authorities on the bust after the Coast Guard spotted the boat from a helicopter flying over international waters.

The cocaine was found in hidden compartments discovered aboard the fishing vessel.

Navy battling growing COVID-19 outbreak on hospital ship Mercy as 7 test positive

Naval health officials are fighting an outbreak of COVID-19 among the crew of the hospital ship Mercy where four more sailors tested positive for the virus over the weekend, bringing the total cases among the crew to seven, a Navy official told The San Diego Union-Tribune on Monday. The affected sailors, as well as those with whom they had close contact, have left the ship and are either isolated or quarantined off the ship, according to Cmdr. John Fage, a 3rd Fleet spokesman. “Seven Medical Treatment Facility crewmembers on board USNS Mercy have tested positive for COVID-19 and are currently isolated off the ship,” Fage said in an email. “The ship is following protocols and taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers and patients on board.” The outbreak has not affected Mercy’s ability to receive patients, Fage said. The Mercy is pier-side at the Port of Los Angeles. Its first case of COVID-19 among its crew was reported by the Union-Tribune on Wednesday. On Friday, two more cases on board were confirmed by the Navy.

The Mercy left San Diego March 23 and arrived in Los Angeles four days later. Its mission is to relieve Los Angeles hospitals by treating patients who do not have COVID-19. All incoming patients are tested before coming aboard. The sailors came aboard after serving at various Navy medical installations, including Naval Medical Center San Diego. The hospital is one of two military medical facilities in San Diego County seeing service members who seek treatment and testing for COVID-19. The other is Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. Because some medical staff rotated through the COVID-19 screening area prior to deploying on the Mercy, one sailor told the Union-Tribune, there is concern on board that the crew brought the virus with them when they left San Diego.

The Mercy has a medical crew of more than 1,000 personnel and a smaller civilian crew that maintains the vessel’s shipboard systems. The Navy has struggled to contain an outbreak of the virus on board another San Diego-based ship, the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. That ship has been sidelined in Guam since late March when several sailors tested positive for COVID-19. As of Monday, 585 sailors on the Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive. One died Monday of complications from the virus, the Navy said. He has not been identified.

Abstract

Single-chain immunotoxins are ideal tools to selectively kill infectious agents. In applying this technology to block transmission of malaria parasites in the mosquito vector, we have constructed a single-chain immunotoxin composed of a single-chain antibody fragment (scFv) directed to Pbs2l on the surface of Plasmodium berghei ookinetes linked to a lytic peptide, Shiva-1. The single-chain immunotoxin was expressed in Escherichia coli, and the protein was purified by a Ni-NTA column. The single-chain immunotoxin was initially shown to exhibit greater killing properties for P. berghei ookinetes in vitro compared with the scFv or synthetic Shiva-1 peptide alone. In an attempt to block malaria transmission by genetically engineered bacteria, recombinant E. coli harboring the single-chain immunotoxin gene were introduced into the mosquito midgut by membrane feeding. The number of infected mosquitoes and their oocyst densities were significantly reduced when the mosquitoes were subsequently allowed to feed on P. berghei-infected mice. These results indicate not only that a single-chain immunotoxin with enhanced parasiticidal activity could form a basis for the development of more effective malaria therapeutic agents, but also that introduction of genetically engineered bacteria into anopheline mosquitoes may offer a practical approach to the regulation of malaria transmission.

US commander sacked after lying that ship was travelling at full speed

The captain of a US guided-missile destroyer was sacked after he ordered crew to report inaccurate ship positions and lie that it was travelling at full speed - when the ship was instead dead in the water.

Commander John 'Bob' Bowen had ordered crew on September 13 not to report that the USS Decatur had stopped travelling to repair a propeller shaft, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

The ship was en route from Hawaii to California last September when the starboard shaft, which connects the engine to the propeller, came out out alignment.

Bowen made crew turn off two electronic systems that automatically sent the ship's position to fleet headquarters in a bid to maintain the lie so they would not know the ship was adrift.

He ordered crew to report inaccurate ship positions for the duration of the four-hour long stop to make it appear that the ship was still travelling.

The destroyer, which was armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Standard surface-to-air missiles, should have covered about 180 miles in the eastern Pacific over that duration, The Times reported.

After the ship returned to San Diego a tip-off was made to a Navy complaints hotline. An investigation was launched in November and Bowen was sacked in January.

A Navy statement obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune at the time revealed Bowen was relieved of his duties following a 'loss of confidence in his ability to command'.

Investigation details have now emerged with navy investigators told how the crew were repeatedly instructed to report false positions while work was under way to realign the propeller shafts.

A sailor told investigators that co-ordinates of where the ship should have been were written down so crew could report its false position back to headquarters, the investigation report revealed.

One sailor who told investigators he refused to take part said: 'There was this piece of paper where the times and speed were calculated.

'It was, in my opinion, designed to make it look like we were continuing along our track… when we weren't.'

Another sailor said he remembered Bowen claiming the repairs wouldn't take long so not to worry about letting the fleet know they'd stopped.

Bowen denied the allegations and when interviewed by investigators said he did not recall ordering his crew to turn off electronic trackers or to report false coordinates.

He also told investigators that he had not wanted headquarters asking questions and thought there was no need to notify the fleet.

Investigation transcripts reveal Bowen said: 'I mean as long as we're not doing anything crazy. We could still do our mission. I just didn't want them asking questions'.

Once the ship was back on its way, false co-ordinates continued to be supplied to the fleet until it the ship had caught up to where it was supposed to be.
