The Senate passed legislation last night that would DETER anyone from meddling in a U.S. election from being able to enter the United States. Literally, the DETER Act stands for Defending Elections against Trolls from Enemy Regimes Act.

The bipartisan bill was spearheaded by Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) and passed the Senate by unanimous consent. After the committee’s vote Graham said in a statement:

As we saw in the 2016 elections, Vladimir Putin’s Russia is attempting to strike at the very heart of the democratic values, freedoms, and liberty all Americans hold dear. By barring foreigners who improperly interfere in our elections from coming to the United States, the DETER Act sends a message to hostile nations across the world that the United States will not tolerate foreign interference in our elections.

No doubt the move comes after the Mueller report and his recent press conference, speaking publicly on the matter for the first, and supposed last, time in over two years. Lawmakers have since tried to make strides towards election security and in time to put measures in place before the upcoming 2020 presidential election. The Hill reports the bill “would block individuals from being able to obtain a visa if they were attempting to or had engaged in ‘improper interference in U.S. elections.’

According to the legislation, that would include violating voting or campaign finance laws or trying to interfere in elections or a campaign while under the direction of a foreign government.” Democrats and Republicans seem to agree that there should NOT be meddling in our elections; now let’s see if they can agree on the parameters of meddling. Justice Department Watchdog Started 10 New Investigations of the FBI Since Last Year

Several probes appear to be linked to bureau's actions before 2016 presidential election

The government watchdog tasked with oversight of the FBI initiated 10 new investigations of the bureau since last year, according to a review of archived versions of the page tracking the agency’s ongoing work. The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is best known for its ongoing investigation of the FBI’s use of a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to spy on Trump-campaign associate Carter Page. The inspector general has nearly completed that investigation and is expected to release a report in the coming weeks. But the FISA inquiry is one of at least six inspector general inquiries which appear to be directly related to FBI and DOJ activities targeting the Trump campaign before the 2016 presidential election. All six of the investigations were made public on the OIG’s Ongoing Work page between January 2018 and April this year.

In three separate investigations, the inspector general is reviewing the FBI’s use of undercover operations, confidential human sources, and covert contracts. Evidence made public since the 2016 election suggests that all three of these bureau components were involved in the counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign. The inspector general is also scrutinizing how the FBI handles misconduct investigations of its employees. This probe may include the many FBI officials who have either been fired from or left the bureau since 2017. The fired FBI officials include Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok.

The watchdog inquiry into the FBI confidential human sources program may in part focus on former British spy Christopher Steele. The bureau hired Steele in 2016 and paid him to provide raw intelligence from his notorious anti-Trump dossier. The bureau fired Steele after learning that he provided the same intelligence to news media in violation of the rules for confidential human sources. Before firing Steele, the bureau used information from his dossier as evidence to obtain a warrant to surveil Page. Top FBI and DOJ officials signed off on the warrant despite evidence that Steele was biased against Trump and without verifying the claims in his dossier. The application for the FISA warrant omitted the fact that the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee paid for the dossier. In one of the most recent disclosures about Steele, notes by State Department official Kathleen Kavalec show that the FBI was likely aware that Steele was not a reliable source well before securing a warrant using Steele’s dossier as evidence. Notably, the OIG is assessing “the FBI’s process of determining reliability and appropriateness of confidential human sources.” The FBI also used at least one undercover agent, Stefan Halper, to target Trump-campaign associates, including Page and George Papadopoulos. Another undercover agent, Azra Turk, worked alongside Halper to target Papadopoulos, but it is not known if she was sent by the FBI or another agency.

The watchdog’s scrutiny of the FBI’s covert contracts is likely to cover more than one component since these agreements are used by different branches of the bureau. Steele’s contract with the FBI was likely covert. Halper was an FBI informant and worked for a think tank paid by the Department of Defense. The inspector general is also looking into the DOJ’s “use of immigration sponsorship programs.” This probe may review how Steele lobbied DOJ official Bruce Ohr for a visa for Russia billionaire Oleg Deripaska. The inspector general’s office did not respond to a phone call requesting a comment.

Trump Meets With May in London, Discusses Bilateral Trade Deal

President Donald Trump’s U.K. trip went from pomp and pageantry to politics on June 4 as he met with outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May in London to discuss a bilateral trade deal to go into effect after the U.K. leaves the European Union.

Trump dialed back his past criticisms of May and instead heaped praise on the trading relationship between the two countries on day 2 of his state visit, as the leaders held a joint news conference near the prime minister’s Downing Street office. May is due to step down on June 7.

“The United Kingdom is America’s largest foreign investor and our largest European export market,” Trump said. “As the U.K. makes preparations to exit the European Union, the United States is committed to a phenomenal trade deal between the U.S. and the U.K.”

Trump praised in his remarks what he called the “the greatest alliance the world has ever known” in describing the countries’ relationship as he commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day in World War Two.

“The bonds of friendship forged here and sealed in blood on those hallowed beaches will endure forever,” he said.

Before the joint news conference, Trump and May had an economic meeting at St. James’s Palace that brought together 10 leading companies—five from the U.K. and five from the United States. CEOs and senior representatives from BAE Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, National Grid, Barclays, Reckitt Benckiser, JP Morgan, Lockheed Martin, Goldman Sachs International, Bechtel, and Splunk were listed as attending.

The president noted the trading relationship between the two allies is worth “over £190 (241 U.S.) billion a year” and said that “everything” is “on the table” in regards to the possible trade deal, including the National Health Service.

“We’re the largest investors in each other’s economies, with mutual investments valued at as much as $1 trillion,” he said.

Earlier, Israel's public broadcaster leaked details of an alleged draft agreement in which the prime minister had agreed to support a legal measure by a religious party on the separation of men and women in public places in exchange for support in forming a coalition government.

Blue & White Alliance co-chairman Yair Lapid has blasted an agreement he says will import Iran-style gender segregation into Israel, and accused the PM of "surrendering" to the religious right.

That… is one hell of a tragedy where people have every right to wonder if they are really going to make it through this time.

I am vigorously opposed to the reactionary racist and authoritarian policies of [US President] Donald Trump. That does not make me anti-American, and I am not anti-Israel because I oppose Netanyahu’s policies.”

Speaking on the peace process in the Middle East, Sanders said Israel is making significant technological advances that could bring innovation and prosperity for the entire region, yet it is unable to achieve this goal because of its unresolved conflict with the Palestinians.

“And I see [the] Palestinian people crushed underneath a military occupation [that is] now over a half-century old, creating a daily reality of pain, humiliation, and resentment,” he continued. “Let me be clear: I do not know how peace can be achieved in that region, but in the Gaza Strip, poverty is rampant. Fifty-three percent of people are unemployed. The number of unemployed is even higher, but young people at 99% of the residents cannot leave that area. That is not a sustainable situation.”

Sanders added that “ending the occupation and enabling the Palestinians’ independence and self-determination in a sovereign, independent, economically viable state of their own, is in the best interest of the United States, Israel, Palestinians, and the entire region. It is a necessary step in ensuring that Israel is accepted and integrated into the region.”

The senator said that he does not doubt the political challenges of reaching a solution, yet he still believes that agreements are possible “if there is a serious willingness to sit down and talk and compromise.”

“The truth is that the parameters of a solution are well known,” he said. “They are based in international law. They are based in multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions. And they are supported by an overwhelmingly international consensus. Two states based on the 1967 lines with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.”

“Unfortunately, [the] prime minister and his allies seem to be preparing for a future in which Israel controls the entire territory between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River in perpetuity,” Sanders continued. “And the Palestinians receive limited autonomy within a disconnected series of communities.”

In July 2017, the media exploded over a meeting in June 2016 at Trump Tower between Donald Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya, the alleged “Kremlin-backed lawyer” (she wasn’t Kremlin-backed) at which Russians promised “dirt” on Hillary Clinton. Every mini-scoop was inflated into the latest contender in the urgent liberal question “Will this finally get Trump impeached and removed?” The media obsession was palpable. The evidence of their fever could be found on your own smartphone.

On the night of July 11, the CNN app was all ablaze with the Trump Junior jeremiads. One after another, the headlines were panicky and tabloidish:

“Trump’s web of Russian ties grows with Miss Universe links.”

“The most troubling parts of Don Jr.’s e-mail exchange with Rob Goldstone.”

“Kaine: Trump Jr. may have committed treason.”

“Trump Jr.s’ e-mails undermine what the White House has been saying.”

“Trump Jr.’s latest e-mail explanation to Sean Hannity doesn’t make any sense.”

“How much legal trouble is Donald Trump Jr. in?”

“Trump Jr. releases bombshell email chain.”

The National Enquirer would be proud of CNN’s passion. In the midst of this stream of speculation verging on mindless gossip, down in the fifth spot, was this other piece of news: “Special ops forces among 16 dead in Marine Corps plane crash.” Way down at the number eight spot was this: “Earth’s sixth mass extinction is more severe than we thought.” But Marines dying and alleged mass extinctions are boring and secondary to wild speculation about Russia. The next headline on the CNN phone app was “Tapper to Trump Jr.: Why so many lies?”

The Supreme Court on Monday found that a criminal defendant can be sentenced for violating his supervised release, even if the release expires while he is incarcerated ahead of facing new charges. The justices, divided in the 5-4 decision, ruled against Jason Mont's argument that a district court shouldn't be able to charge him for violating his release because the term had expired at the time of the new sentencing. After several delays of a hearing, a district court heard and ruled that Mont had violated his supervised release and imposed another prison sentence. Mont had opposed the new 42-month sentence, set to run after completing the sentence for his new charges, which he pleaded guilty to. He said that he shouldn't face the new sentence because the court had repeatedly delayed the hearing until after the end date for his supervised release term.

Thomas wrote in the majority opinion that "time in pretrial detention constitutes supervised release only if the charges against the defendant are dismissed or the defendant is acquitted." RIVERVIEW — Isaac Anderson didn’t know he was not supposed to leave test answers on the walls of his social studies classroom.

That’s what the 40-year-old teacher told Hillsborough County School District officials when they were called to review his students’ surprisingly high test scores. Shortly before they got his name on a resignation form, he said he thought test security rules were for state exams, not those given by the district.

Anderson’s departure from Spoto High coincides with a larger examination of the school, hailed this past year as a success because of its fast-rising graduation rates.

Investigations into Anderson and former principal Glennis Perez were launched in January and February, not long after superintendent Jeff Eakins staged a Thursday afternoon hot dog party at Spoto to celebrate the latest graduation numbers. All of the district’s principals were invited.

Hillsborough is on its way to achieving Eakins’ goal of a 90 percent graduation rate by 2020, a rapid improvement from rates in the mid-70s just a few years ago. That day at Spoto, Eakins praised school leaders for creating opportunities for students with disabilities and interrupting the cycle of multi-generational poverty. “It’s unprecedented, I hope you know that,” he told the crowd.

To earn a diploma, students must pass state competency tests in math and English or take alternative tests in their place. They must complete a sufficient number of credits. And they must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average — an area where a teacher who helps students pass their tests can impact a school’s overall performance numbers, including the graduation rate.

Anderson resigned his teaching position in April. Perez left the school, but not the district, shortly after investigators began focusing on her. A new principal, Jazrick Haggins, took over at Spoto in May.

The common assessment scores in Anderson’s classes previously had been the lowest in the school, with fewer than half of his students passing. Yet on the semester exam, they had a passing rate of 59.7 percent.

His students were out-scoring their peers at all but three of the district’s high schools. And they were 7 points higher than Miller’s students, even though she had been assigned to help Anderson improve his teaching.

Students began to talk, and four agreed to submit written statements.

Two wrote that Anderson gave out two or three answers during the exam because he had not covered the material. The other two described posters on the wall in plain view, containing test answers. And although one wrote that Anderson collected phones before the exam, that student said Anderson did not appear to make any effort to make sure the kids did not have a second phone, or a smart watch.

Testing supervisors interviewed Anderson on March 12 and found him “very candid,” according to their report. He said that throughout his teaching career he had left posters up for regular tests, taking them down only for state exams. He said this year’s exam was new and he had not been able to cover all the material.

“He was adamant that he did not think the semester exam was as ‘big a deal’ as the state tests that are given,'” the report said. Repeating that he always used posters, he said that “he really didn’t understand why that would be inappropriate on test day.” Nor, he added, did he do any of this for monetary gain.

The Maine legislature has passed a bill that will legalize assisted suicide in the state.

The bill, called the Maine Death with Dignity Act, would allow doctors to prescribe lethal medications to terminally ill patients 18 or over. It passed the Maine state House in a narrow 73-72 vote and the state Senate 19-16.

Damien Smyth has renamed his West London pub “The Trump Arms” for this week and refitted it with American- and Trump-themed decorations including a sign reading “Welcome our American Friends.”

“This is an incredible man, you know, and we have to show the American people and the president that he’s a tremendous operator and a great man for his country and for the world,” Mr. Smyth told Fox Business Network in an interview Tuesday.
