HONOLULU — A Hawaii-based Army soldier accused of attempting to support the Islamic State group will plead guilty, his lawyers said Tuesday.
Birney Bervar, one of Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang's attorneys, told the AP that Kang will plead guilty as charged in the indictment, which accuses him of providing material aid to terrorists. Kang is agreeing to a 25-year sentence for charges that could have put him in prison for life, Bervar said.
Alexander Silvert, an assistant federal defender representing Kang, also said the soldier has agreed to plead guilty.
Court documents allege Kang provided classified military information to undercover agents whom he believed were part of the Islamic State group.
Kang is scheduled to withdraw his not guilty plea Thursday, court records show. The hearing was moved from the afternoon to the morning because of concerns about a hurricane headed for Hawaii, Silvert said.
A plea agreement hasn't been filed in court yet.
A confidential informant told authorities Kang watched videos depicting beheadings and other violence in his room for hours every day, according to court documents.
Kang told the informant that if he became an Islamic State member, he would be a suicide bomber and attack Schofield Barracks, a sprawling Army base outside Honolulu, according to an affidavit filed in court.
Kang began researching the Muslim religion in 2014, couldn't wait to move to the Middle East to "join the cause" and was "only in the military for a paycheck," the informant said, according to the affidavit.
When Kang met with the undercover agents at a home in Honolulu, he pledged allegiance to the group and kissed an Islamic State flag, according to court documents.
Kang may suffer from service-related mental health issues that the government was aware of but neglected to treat, Bervar has said previously.
Kang has been detained without bail since his arrest last year. Kang is still in the Army, but his duty status is "confined," said Lt. Col. Curt Kellogg, with the 25th Infantry Division.

Pennsylvania priest faces charges as sex abuse fallout grows
HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Roman Catholic priest was charged Tuesday with groping a 17-year-old girl and sending her nude images of himself, just a week after a Pennsylvania grand jury reported the church had covered up decades of priests' child molestation across the state.
The charges of felony corruption of minors and misdemeanor indecent assault against the Rev. Kevin Lonergan, 30, a Pottstown, Pennsylvania, native who most recently served as pastor at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown, were not a result of the landmark grand jury investigation but stemmed from a complaint filed in June after the grand jury had finished its work, authorities said.
This is at least the second case of possible priest abuse being investigated in the Allentown Diocese since the grand jury finished its report, which identified 301 “predator priests” in a half dozen Pennsylvania dioceses going back to the 1940s.
Authorities have charged just two priests as a result of the grand jury investigation, including a priest who has since pleaded guilty.
But because of time limits in state law on the prosecution of old cases, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said those two were the only priests named in the report that his office could charge. Some of those named were prosecuted years ago, and more than 100 are dead.
Court papers did not list a lawyer for Lonergan. Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said Allentown Diocese officials immediately reported the matter to law enforcement and Lonergan has been removed from active ministry.
Lonergan met the girl at Mass last year, authorities said.
Meanwhile, fallout from the grand jury report is growing.
A Roman Catholic university plans to remove the names of three bishops from campus buildings, saying Monday that it is acting in solidarity with victims of child sexual abuse.
The University of Scranton said three bishops — Jerome D. Hannan, J. Carroll McCormick, and James C. Timlin — in the local diocese were found in the report to have covered up priests' crimes and put children in harm’s way.
Hannan served from 1954 until his death in 1965. McCormick served from 1966 until 1983 and died in 1996. Timlin served from 1984 until 2003 and is 91 years old.
The diocese’s response to the report noted that Timlin instituted a uniform response policy for allegations of abuse and established an internal review board.
Pope Francis vowed Monday that “no effort must be spared” to root out priests' sex abuse and church cover-ups, but Francis gave no indication that he would sanction complicit bishops or end the Vatican culture of secrecy that has allowed the crisis to fester.
The report cites complaints about sexual misconduct by priests with children or teenagers that the three Scranton Diocese bishops did not act on, instead leaving the priests to continue in ministry.
Two weeks before the report was released, the Harrisburg Diocese said it would hold past church leadership accountable for the priests' sexual abuse of children and strip the names of bishops going back 70 years from church properties.
For the first time, dioceses in Pennsylvania have released lists of priests accused of sexual misconduct.
Meanwhile, Beaver County fired a county government lawyer after a report showed that, as district attorney in the 1960s, he stopped an investigation of possible child abuse by a priest to gain political favor from the Pittsburgh Diocese.

Investigators also found evidence the school failed to protect students at the time or fully investigate their complaints. Several of the accused were fired, but most were quietly "moved on" with letters of recommendations for their next jobs, according to the Boston law firm Casner & Edwards.
St. Paul's requested the investigation last year following reports about Howard White, who taught at St. Paul's from 1967 to 1971 and pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting students from St. George's School in Rhode Island in 1973.
In the latest report, investigators said they were able to substantiate allegations against the late Massachusetts Congressman Gerry Studds, who was described as preying on male students during his time there from 1965 to 1969.

"I don't think there's any question that she's going to take the election," Rosenstein added.
A Clinton win would have a neutral effect on markets, he said, though a Democratic sweep of Congress is "not priced in" and might cause stock multiples to come down.

A Cardinal who was heavily criticised for his handling of child sexual abuse allegations in the Pennsylvania grand jury report has withdrawn from a scheduled appearance at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin next week, it has been confirmed.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, was due to give the keynote address, entitled “The Welfare of the Family is Decisive for the Future of the World,” in the RDS at 2.30pm next Wednesday.
No reason has been provided for the decision.
Cardinal Wuerl was bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1988 to 2006. The report of the grand jury, which was published on Tuesday, found “wholesale institutional failure that endangered the welfare of children” in Pittsburgh.
The report faults Cardinal Donald Wuerl, a former bishop of Pittsburgh and now Archbishop of Washington, for what it said was his role in the concealment of sex abuse.
It chose three examples from cases involving 99 abusive priests there as “a window into the conduct” of bishops “and the crimes they permitted to occur on their watch”.

In a joint appearance, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr and Vice Chair Sen. Mark Warner told reporters Tuesday that they have "recently reengaged" former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen in their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Burr said that their committee reached out to Cohen after he claimed that President Trump knew beforehand about the meeting in Trump Tower in June 2016 in which Donald Trump Jr., former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and Mr. Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with a Russian attorney whom Trump Jr. believed had damaging information about Hillary Clinton's campaign. Cohen said in late July that he was willing to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller about the knowledge of this meeting.
In a joint statement, Burr and Warner suggested that Cohen's recent claims may have contradicted information that he had provided when he testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee in September.
"Mr. Cohen had testified before the Committee that he was not aware of the meeting prior to its disclosure in the press last summer. As such, the Committee inquired of Mr. Cohen's legal team as to whether Mr. Cohen stood by his testimony. They responded that he did stand by his testimony," Burr said.
