Hooters Is Shutting Down Locations, Restrategizing After Recent Study Says Millennials Aren't That Into Boobs

Another day, another opportunity to blame millennials for the demise of… well, anything. This time, you can shit on the group for causing the potential downfall of boob-friendly bar and restaurant chain Hooters. According to a recent study from the fine folks over at Pornhub, millennials are less interested in breasts than their elders. To get specific: "Pornhub visitors between the ages of 18 to 24 are 19% less likely to search for breasts when compared to all other age groups, but visitors aged 55 to 64 are 17% more likely to search."

Millennials' porn preferences appear to be indicative of a wider trend. To use a fire portmanteau, "breastaurants" like Hooters and the more risque Twin Peaks are dealing with a loss of interest in breasts, which is affecting their business. The number of Hooters locations in the U.S. had already dropped by more than 7 percent from 2012 to 2016, and sales had stagnated, according to Business Insider.

Hooters has been trying to win over millennials for years; in 2012, the chain spiced up its image with a new decor and updated menu items, in an attempt to attract younger patrons and female customers. They even pivoted and opened up a fast-casual location called Hoots, which features fully-clothed female and male waiters.

In an interview with Mel Magazine, PornHub Vice President Corey Price joked, "Could it be that millennials aren’t into breasts because, simply, they like big butts and cannot lie?" More seriously, he continued, "It’s not our job to speculate but rather provide compelling data for our fans to digest and draw their own inferences from."

If Hooters wants to keep its doors open, maybe it should consider following in Pornhub's footsteps and invest in some research.

I use Linux. When the board slows down, I just assume its due to a DDOS, that it will eventually subside, and just go on about my business.

Recently, Linux has been hitting me with one security update or another just about daily. So just assume that Q was correct when he noted that we are at war.

That's a lot of assumptions, but what you are describing is better attributed to a server that can't deliver than a local system that can't resolve.

One thing I DO find helpful is limiting contact with Gateway Pundit. SOMETHING on that site chews through clock cycles like crazy. Yesterday, after trying to move the cursor for 45 minutes, I finally had to admit defeat and do a hard reboot.

I can have as many as 10 or 15 tabs open without noticeable degradation so long as none of them are GP. It's gotten so I only open it for a peek to see if they have anything compelling on the front page. If they do, I read the one or two interesting articles and then shut it down.

Earlier this month a rather unusual tech event took place in San Francisco.

The Decentralized Web Summit played host to a gathering of web luminaries such as Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Brewster Kahle and Vint Cerf. On top of that, activists and authors and screenwriters such as Jennifer Stisa Granick, Emili Jacobi, Mike Judge and Cory Doctorow put in an appearance, as did cryptocurrency pioneers like Zooko Wilcox, blockchain developers, and academics.

Then, there was what the Guardian's John Harris calls the Punk Rock Internet - companies like MaidSafe and Blockstack who play by their own decentralised rules.

Oh, and there was a sprinkling of techies from Microsoft, Google (Vint Cerf and others) and Mozilla in attendance too, along with a handful of venture capitalists looking for opportunities.

Uniting this diverse selection of delegates was the challenge of fixing the centralising tendencies of the internet and web.

Simply put, the internet's reliance on centralised hubs of servers and data centres means that the more servers you control the more power you have, with all the negative consequences that follow from the creation of data-haves and data-have-nots.

To redress the balance, data needs to be freed from silos with control handed back to users, but how to do that while retaining the convenience and ease-of-use of the current web?

Aside from the inevitable resistance by the powers that be, this turns out to be quite the technical challenge.

One task among a set of complex interlocking challenges is to separate data from the applications that use it. People could then store their personal data where they choose, granting or limiting access by applications as they please. For example, Berners-Lee's Solid platform enables everyone to have multiple 'pods' for their data allowing for fine-grained control.

Another element is authentication, ensuring that the data owner really is who they say they are, while ensuring real identities remain private by default.

Networking needs to be peer-to-peer rather than hub-and-spoke, with copies of files stored across multiple machines for redundancy and speed of throughput in a manner that users of torrent-based file-sharing services will be familiar with, but adding far more control and performance features.

And above all it will need to be easy to use, low latency and simple for developers to create decentralised applications for.

Computing contacted a number of contributors to the Summit before and after the event and asked about their take on progress towards a viable decentralised web.

Bolton Claims US, Russia, Israel Want Iran Driven From Syria

The United States and Russia "might make progress together" and possibly negotiate the withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria, according to John Bolton.

During an interview on ABC’s This Week US National Security Adviser John Bolton claimed that Russia, Israel and the United States all want Iranian-backed forced removed from Syria.

"Well I think the – certainly the objective of the United States, of Israel, President Putin said it was Russia’s objective is to get Iran – Iranian forces, Iranian militias, Iranian surrogates out of the offensive operations they’re in in both Syria and Iraq and frankly, to end Iran’s support for Hezbollah," Bolton said.

Bolton also insisted that despite the fact that both Russia and Iran support the government of Bashar Assad in Syria, Moscow and Tehran do not share a common interest in the region.

"Well I think President Putin is very candid in his comments to President Trump, he was to me as well… He said he didn’t – didn’t have the same interest as Iran in Syria. And that he’d like to talk about ways to get out of them," he said.

White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders also announced last week that during their one-on-one summit in Helsinki, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed in principle that Iran should withdraw from Syria, though Moscow regards this as a tough task.

However, the Kremlin hasn't yet confirmed the information.

French Audit Warns 840 Bridges May Face Risk of Collapse

PARIS—An audit commissioned by the French government says about 840 French bridges are suffering from serious damage and at risk of collapse in the coming several years.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government had already promised new infrastructure spending, but is coming under new pressure after Tuesday’s bridge collapse in neighboring Italy that killed 43 people.

The audit, published Sunday by the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, says a third of the 12,000 government-maintained bridges in France need repairs. About 7 percent, or about 840 bridges, present a “risk of collapse” in the coming years if spending is kept at current levels, the audit says.

The audit doesn’t address thousands of other French bridges maintained by private companies or local authorities, which have seen budget cuts in recent years.

The government released a summary of the audit last month, blaming previous administrations for inconsistent and inadequate road funding, and saying the growth of traffic and increasing episodes of extreme weather have worsened the problem.

The Transport Ministry didn’t respond to requests for comment Sunday. Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne told broadcaster Franceinfo last week that bridge “maintenance is our priority” and announced plans for a 1 billion-euro (($1.14 billion) plan to “save the nation’s roads,” including bridges and tunnels. She reiterated plans for a new infrastructure law after the summer holidays.

The Genoa bridge collapse has shined a spotlight on road maintenance in Italy. Italian investments in roads sank most dramatically among the top five European economies after the 2008 economic crisis, never fully recovering, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
