South Dakota Secretary Of State Bucks Party, Endorses Democrat To Be Successor9/18/26

A Republican-favoring state’s incumbent secretary of state endorsed a Democrat to succeed her months after losing the GOP nomination to serve in the position for the following term.

South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson endorsed the Democratic nominee, Terrence Davis, over the Republican nominee, Heather Baxter, to succeed her, according to a Saturday statement by Johnson obtained by Dakota News Now. Johnson’s endorsement comes after she lost the nomination to Baxter in June, 59% to 40%, according to Ballotpedia. By comparison, President Donald Trump won South Dakota with 63% of the vote in 2024.

Neither Johnson’s office nor the Davis campaign immediately responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

Davis then thanked Johnson for her endorsement in a Saturday post to Facebook.

“I am deeply grateful to have the support of South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson,” Davis wrote. “Monae and I come from different political parties. We will not agree on every issue. That is exactly why her confidence in me means so much.”

In her statement, Johnson expressed her belief that, “hav[ing] spent more than a decade in this office,” she “believe[s] Terrence Davis is the candidate best prepared to protect the office and serve South Dakota with seriousness, steadiness, and integrity.”

“That is why I am asking South Dakotans, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, independents, and everyone in between, to look beyond the letter beside a candidate’s name, examine the record and temperament of the candidates seeking this responsibility, and vote for Terrence Davis for Secretary of State,” Johnson continued.

Baxter, a South Dakota state representative whose campaign website emphasizes championing election integrity, told POLITICO in a statement that Republicans already looked at their records when choosing to nominate her.

“In June, Republican delegates considered the record and nominated me over incumbent Secretary of State Monae Johnson, 59 percent to 41 percent [sic]. That was not confusion. That was self-government in action,” Baxter stated, the outlet reported Saturday. “The letter beside a name is not decoration. It tells voters what governing philosophy they will carry into the office that runs our elections and business services.”

Rep. Jon Hansen, the speaker of the state’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives, condemned Johnson’s decision in a Saturday post to X.

“South Dakota Republican Secretary of State, after being defeated at the Republican party convention in her reelection bid, is endorsing the Democrat candidate,” Hanson wrote. “Huge mistake! Do NOT hand our elections over to the Democrats! Vote REPUBLICAN Heather Baxter for Secretary of State!”

Baxter, however, told the DCNF she was “not particularly” surprised by Johnson’s decision.

“Secretary Johnson and I disagreed on the direction of this office — that’s exactly why Republican delegates overwhelmingly chose a change in June,” Baxter said Saturday. “It’s not surprising she’d rather back someone who won’t change what she’s built. Pseudo Republicans have long infiltrated the party, changing their voter registrations from Democrat to Republican. South Dakota’s illusion of ruby red is being exposed!”

When asked what Johnson’s endorsement of a Democrat could signal to campaigns outside of South Dakota, Baxter told the DCNF that “[t]his is a real dynamic to note: an outgoing officeholder crossing party lines to back the opposing party’s nominee, in a race where their own party ousted them in a primary/convention, is a notable ‘sore loser or good-faith institutionalist.’”

Baxter, Davis, and Libertarian nominee Tamara Lesnar are ultimately expected to face off Nov. 3, 2026.

Officials Remove Republican Candidate From Forum After ‘Misgendering’ Transgender Rep Sarah McBride9/18/26

A Republican House hopeful got the boot from a Delaware candidate forum after twice refusing to use female pronouns for his transgender Democratic rival.

Joseph “Dr. Joe” Arminio lost his spot on the stage Thursday night at a forum run by the Jewish Federation of Delaware at the Siegel Jewish Community Center in Talleyville, according to WDEL. He is challenging Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of the U.S. House, for the state’s lone congressional seat in November.

Trouble started when Arminio described McBride using the word “his” during an opening statement, drawing boos from a crowd of roughly 100 people, WDEL reported. Moderator Ken Grant let him finish before issuing a warning.

“This is your final warning: If you fail to show respect to anyone else on this stage, you will be asked to leave,” Grant said, according to Delaware Public Media.

Arminio owned up to the slip early on, telling attendees, “I committed an error before, and I do acknowledge it,” according to WDEL. The rapprochement did not last. About 12 minutes later, while discussing healthcare costs, he gestured toward Democratic Sen. Chris Coons and McBride and called them “gentlemen.” Organizers quickly cut his microphone and removed him.

McBride tried to keep Arminio in the room as he exited, WDEL reported, and later told Delaware Public Media he wanted the ejection understood on his terms.

“I have thick skin; I can handle things. That doesn’t mean what he was doing or saying was right or appropriate… but I thought it was important to make clear that his removal from the stage was not a byproduct of my request,” McBride said.

Republican Senate candidate Dr. Mike Katz apologized to the room and afterward urged Arminio to quit the race, according to Delaware Public Media. Arminio won Tuesday’s GOP primary over the party’s endorsed pick, Earl Cooper, the outlet reported. He told 6abc he would respond to the incident Friday.

McBride has faced similar treatment from Republicans before. Republican Texas Rep. Keith Self called him “Mr. McBride” at a 2025 hearing, and Republican Illinois Rep. Mary Miller introduced him as “the gentleman from Delaware” ahead of her first floor speech that year, according to The Hill.

What Crimewave? Britain Gets Special Rape Courts

Courts in England and Wales will set aside specially equipped courtrooms to fast-track rape and serious sexual cases,as a massive backlog means thousands of women wait longer than a year to get a court date and justice.

Every Crown Court in England and Wales will set aside a courtroom just for the hearing of rape and serious sexual offence cases, with the government earmarking a ‘multi-million-pound’ budget to specially adapt the courts for the task. Court houses will provide a special private entrance for sex crime victims, and special waiting areas inside, so they aren’t circulating in the same public areas as others.

Court staff, including judges, will receive special training as part of this initiative, which will see rape trials not only allocated their own courtrooms but also prioritised with fixed-date trials, rather than sitting on a waiting list like other court cases.

The change is part of the government’s ongoing attempt toget a grip on the towering courts backlog, which, through years of underinvestment in the courts system, with ever more technically complex and consequently longer trials, and a rise in the amount of crime being detected and prosecuted, has seen wait times soar. In more and more cases, victims can wait years for a court date, which critics say discourages people from coming forward, and in some cases encourages victims to withdraw cases when they become demoralised by the extremely long process.

Per a report in The Times, the average rape case took 424 days to complete once it had entered the Crown Court system.

The initiative will start with six dedicated rape courts in 2027, with every Crown Court in England and Wales set to have a dedicated courtroom within two years, the government said.

While there is extra funding in the package for the conversion of existing courtrooms to a dedicated space suited to hearing rape and sex assault cases, the total number of courts and sitting time appears to be unchanged, meaning the overall court backlog in the UK is unlikely to meaningfully change, as other types of crime are de-prioritised in favour of sex crime.

Regardless, the initiative is likely to be receivedwith considerably more enthusiasm than Labour’s last high-profile idea to cut court waiting times, by removing the right to a jury trial for a considerable proportion of cases.

Other options exist, including opening more courts more frequently, including 24-hour court sittings, but these options cost money, and the government has other priorities.

Responding to the specialist rape court initiative, Conservative justice spokesman Nick Timothy broadly welcomed the idea but asserted more court sitting dates were still needed to provide justice for all. He said: “Tackling the delays in criminal rape trials is long overdue. The fact that victims have been withdrawing their cases because they have taken too long has been a disgrace.

“However, rape trial delays have been used by Labour as their main justification for their attack on juries. If resources can be found to accelerate rape trials, why are they persisting in their attack on this ancient right to jury trials?Labour need to get courts sitting throughout the year, end the delays and clear the backlog – not undermine our right to a trial by jury.”
