German Police Suspect State Interference After Drone Disrupts Hanover Airport

Aug 11, 2026 20:40

An unidentified drone intrusion triggered repeated runway and airspace closures at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport, Der Spiegel reported on August 11.

This prompted German authorities to investigate a potential foreign state-sponsored attack.

The airspace breach follows a security incident on August 4 at Leipzig Airport, where an FPV drone carrying a Semtex explosive charge struck the wing of a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft near its fuel tanks.

The drone failed to detonate upon impact and lay unnoticed on the tarmac for four hours before being discovered by a tour bus driver.

US and German officials have linked the failed strike to Russian intelligence services.

The incident, occurring at a key European logistics hub frequently used for NATO military transport, has heightened concerns that foreign state actors are conducting hybrid attacks against critical aviation infrastructure.

The incident at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport caused significant disruptions over two hours, forcing the diversion of a cargo aircraft and the postponement of multiple scheduled departures and landings.

The intrusion comes as investigators are already working frantically to uncover the origins of a suspected drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport just days prior.

An internal police report obtained by Der Spiegel noted that given the targeting of critical infrastructure, “the presence of hybrid activity cannot be ruled out.”

The term “hybrid activity” refers to incidents where foreign state actors deliberately interfere with public or critical infrastructure.

While the report stated it is currently unclear if there is a direct connection to the Leipzig drone attack, the similarities are raising major security concerns.

Crucially, the Hanover incident exposed vulnerabilities in the airport’s defenses. The report revealed that the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) were unable to protect the airport using their existing anti-drone technology, Der Spiegel noted.

Although airport employees repeatedly spotted the drone visually, the Federal Police’s warning systems registered nothing. Despite having a drone detection device actively in operation, no alerts were triggered.

German Air Traffic Control (Deutsche Flugsicherung) was also unable to track the device on its radar. Because the drone bypassed all technical detection measures and remained airborne for approximately two hours, the Federal Police strongly suspect the device was not a standard commercial drone, Der Spiegel wrote.

The disruption began when an employee at the freight company DB Schenker first spotted the drone hovering about 25 meters above the firm’s premises, inside the airport’s strict no-fly zone.

Authorities immediately closed the southern runway and rerouted air traffic. Shortly after, several police patrols visually confirmed the drone near the airport perimeter, prompting authorities to place the entire facility under lockdown at around 4:00 a.m.

Although officials briefly reopened the northern runway after the drone appeared to drift away, the threat quickly returned.

At 4:21 a.m., the drone reappeared directly over the TUI Fly building before hovering above the active apron, forcing another immediate halt to all flight operations.

Der Spiegel reported that the drone was last spotted around 4:40 a.m. over several freight forwarding sites, with the airport finally resuming normal operations at 5:20 a.m.

In the wake of the previous Leipzig incident, Germany’s main aviation industry association (BDL) praised the rollout of anti-drone defenses across the country’s eight designated critical airports.

BDL Managing Director Joachim Lang noted that political decisions to centralize drone detection under the Federal Police and install specialized modular equipment were enacted at “light speed,” leaving Germany “exceptionally well-positioned by international standards.”

Ex-Mossad chief says ‘we toured’ Iran’s Fordo nuclear site ‘many times’

In remarks at forum in Safed, Yossi Cohen says US bombing of site in 2025 was ‘the fulfillment of all my dreams,’ suggests that 60% uranium enrichment ‘is still far from a bomb’

Former Mossad director Yossi Cohen revealed on Tuesday that Israeli operatives have toured Iran’s Fordo uranium enrichment facility several times in the past.

“We toured the Fordo nuclear site many times in order to understand the site,” he said Tuesday at the Galilee Forum in Safed, according to Hebrew media outlets, without saying when the visits took place or who exactly toured the site.

“[The site] being bombed by the Americans was the fulfillment of all my dreams,” Cohen added.

Fordo, along with the Isfahan and Natanz facilities, was severely damaged by US strikes during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025.

Reports have said the 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of highly enriched uranium stored in the facilities was buried, but Israel reportedly believes that Iran managed to transfer some of it to the nearby Pickaxe Mountain site following that war.

Pickaxe Mountain was not hit then or in the latest war, although US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to bomb it.

Cohen also said Tuesday “that 60% enriched uranium is still far from a bomb,” appearing to contradict experts such as David Albright, who say 60% enriched uranium can potentially be further enriched to weapons grade in a matter of weeks or even days.

No other quotes from Cohen’s remarks during the forum were released to media outlets.

Trump asserted last year that the June 2025 operation “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capability and set back its nuclear program by decades. But the exact extent of the damage is unknown.

Prior to last year’s strikes, Iran was enriching uranium to 60 percent, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. That is far higher than necessary for civilian reactor levels, and close to the 90 percent required to build a nuclear weapon.

In a report aired on Channel 12’s “Uvda” investigative program in January, Cohen said Israel first became aware of what was going on at Fordo in 2010. The Mossad began putting together a grandiose operation that — Cohen said at the time — had it been carried out, “would have been the greatest operation in the history of the country.”

The plan reportedly faced doubts owing to the enormous resources required, its dizzying complexity, the need to mesh delicately synchronized activities, the number of agents required, as well as figuring how to get them out of Iran after the attack went ahead. The Mossad favored using its own home-grown operatives rather than agents enlisted abroad, complicating the mission, which Cohen indicated would have required at least dozens of people.

BREAKING: Tan Son Nhat Airport suspends take-offs, landings twice after drones spotted

Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 20:57 GMT+7

Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City suspended take-offs and landings twice on Tuesday evening after pilots reported spotting drones flying near aircraft operating areas.

A leader of Tan Son Nhat International Airport confirmed the incident to Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper on Tuesday night, saying the airport had activated its UAV response plan to ensure the safety of all flights.

According to a preliminary report, at 6:16 pm, the airport duty manager received information from the airport control tower that the crew of flight 3S621 from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi had spotted a drone.

The B777 aircraft, registered as DAALQ, took off from runway 25L at 6:14 pm. When the aircraft was at an altitude of around 1,800 feet, the crew detected a drone to its right, approximately 500 meters away.

Earlier, the crew of flight VJ601 from Cam Ranh to Ho Chi Minh City had also reported sighting a drone at an altitude of 3,000 feet. The flight landed on runway 25L at 5:38 pm.

At 6:28 pm, the control tower announced the suspension of all departing and arriving flights at Tan Son Nhat under the airport's response plan for an airspace violation.

At that time, seven flights were waiting to take off, including VJ805, VJ262, VN1186, VN609, VN218, and VN1374. However, the flight list provided by the airport currently contains only six flight numbers.

The affected arriving flights included SQ186, VJ853, VN1423, VN525, VJ489, VN7393, MH766, and BL6441.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport immediately activated its UAV response plan. At 7:16 pm, the control tower and the Southern Airports Authority gave permission for take-offs and landings to resume normally.

However, at 7:40 pm, the control tower received another report from Center 3 about a UAV detected to the west-southwest of the airport. Take-offs and landings were suspended once again, and the UAV response plan was reactivated.

Representatives of Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet said the airlines were closely monitoring the situation, underlining that flight safety remained their top priority.

Ukraine to rebury another Nazi collaborator

Evgeny Konovalets, OUN founder and German intelligence asset, has been exhumed in the Netherlands, officials in Kiev have said

Published 11 Aug, 2026 15:35 |40

Ukraine has exhumed the remains of Evgeny Konovalets, founder of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) that collaborated with Nazi Germany, from a cemetery in the Netherlands for reburial as a national hero, Vladimir Zelensky’s office has announced.

The exhumation took place in Rotterdam at the Crooswijk cemetery on Tuesday, officials said, adding that the operation was overseen by several top Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga.

Konovalets’ remains are to be temporarily reburied at Ukraine’s National Military Memorial Cemetery, with a farewell ceremony planned at a Kiev cathedral, the statement added.

Konovalets fought the Soviet Union during the Russian Civil War as a colonel in the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and led the OUN from its founding in 1929 until he was killed in 1938 by Soviet agent Pavel Sudoplatov. According to declassified documents, a group of Ukrainian nationalists led by Konovalets – codenamed “Consul I” – had supplied German intelligence with data on Poland from 1925 and moved into “espionage and sabotage”work inside the Soviet Union after 1939.

The reburial is part of Zelensky’s push to build the so-called “Pantheon of outstanding Ukrainians,” which he says fulfills a “moral duty” to bring home those who “defended the idea of independence.” Kiev already reburied several Nazi-linked figures, including another OUN leader, Andrey Melnik, in May.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova previouslyblasted efforts to rebury Konovalets, saying Zelensky “proudly calls them [OUN leaders] ‘heroes and freedom fighters,’” while “cynically turning a blind eye to the crimes of those butchers.” She also accused Zelensky of “dancing on the bones” of those who fell victim to the OUN, once again confirming the “misanthropic essence” of his government.

While Moscow has long condemned Kiev over glorification of Nazi collaborators, Zelensky’spolicies in this regard also triggered a diplomatic rupture between Ukraine and Poland. The row erupted after Zelensky decided to name a special forces unit “Heroes of the UPA,” in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which killed more than 100,000 Poles during the 1943–1945 Volhynia massacres.

Why the FBI is working with China and Russia, despite everything 1/2

An unexpected turn is reshaping global security beyond the old rivalries

Published 11 Aug, 2026 16:58 |

In an era defined by fierce geopolitical competition,FBI Director Kash Patel has charted a course that prioritizes pragmatism and results.

By building selective yet substantivelaw-enforcement partnerships with China and Russia, the bureau is demonstrating that great powers can set aside deeper differences to confront transnational crimethat endangers citizens everywhere. This development deserves recognition as a mature, interest-based approach, showing that effective governance in a multipolar world requires the capacity to cooperate wherever it delivers concrete gains.

Breaking the ice with Beijing

Patel’s engagement with his Chinese counterparts marks a clear departure from years of a near-total freeze in high-level law-enforcement contacts. In November 2025, he became the first FBI director to visit China since 2016, meeting Vice Minister of Public Security Xu Datong. He returned in July 2026 for discussions with State Councillor and Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong.

Chinese officials have called for deepening constructive dialogue grounded in mutual respect. According to Patel, the results were made possible by direct engagement under the Trump administration’s leadership. The relationship did not emerge overnight; it followed President Donald Trump’s May 2025 visit to China and subsequent high-level understandings on fentanyl precursors. What matters is that both sides chose to institutionalize the opening rather than allow it to remain a one-off diplomatic gesture.

Institutionalizing daily cooperation

Four dedicated working groups now operate on cyber fraud, violent crimes against children, counternarcotics, and a fugitive task force. Chinese Ministry of Public Security officers travel to FBI facilities in the US on a monthly rotating basis; FBI personnel make reciprocal trips to China. Officials on both sides report near-daily communication – an intensity of contact that had not existed for years.

This steady exchange has already produced operational results. One notable joint action,Operation Sand Dollar, brought together the FBI, China’s Ministry of Public Security, and Dubai police against a major cyber-scam center. The effort yielded roughly 300 arrests, the seizure of approximately $300 million, and the liberation of thousands of trafficked workers. Such outcomes illustrate the practical value of treating certain criminal networks as shared problems rather than exclusive domains of competition.

Patel has been explicit about the philosophy guiding this work. He has noted that the decision to pursue cooperation with China despite widespread advice against it proves what is possible with almost any counterpart: “The fact that we did it with China when everyone said, ‘Don’t do it,’ and, ‘You can’t do it,’ shows what we can do with almost anyone.” The partnerships are deliberately limited to specific categories of transnational crime; they do not pretend to resolve broader strategic disagreements. That clarity of scope makes them sustainable under the current circumstances.

Opening a channel to Moscow

The same pragmatic approach is being applied to Russia. Patel is preparing a visit to Moscow and St. Peterburg, tentatively scheduled for mid-October, with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) expected to serve as host. The last sitting FBI director known to have traveled to Russia was Robert Mueller in 2013. Patel’s planned trip builds on quieter collaboration already underway for more than a year against violent criminal networks.

2/2

This outreach occurs against the backdrop of Trump’s broader effort to reduce tensions with Moscow. Special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have made repeated visits, including meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and further contacts are anticipated. Putin’s special envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev, has publicly welcomed the emerging China-Russia-US intelligence and law-enforcement cooperation, signaling that Moscow sees value in the channel.

Complementary signals across government

Patel’s initiative does not stand alone. Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby, long regarded as a China hardliner, has expressed clear interest in visiting China and revitalizing professional military-to-military ties. Colby’s willingness to explore direct engagement signals an important evolution: Even those most focused on strategic competition now recognize that sustained channels of communication and cooperation on discrete issues can reduce miscalculation risks and open space for practical problem-solving.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has likewise signaled openness to restoring reliable military communication channels with Beijing. Hegseth has publicly emphasized the need to reboot US-China military hotlines and crisis-management mechanisms that had atrophied in recent years. These steps are framed not as concessions but as tools for managing competition responsibly– ensuring that routine incidents at sea or in the air do not spiral into larger confrontations.

Together, Colby’s interest in revitalizing professional ties and Hegseth’s push to restore functional hotlines illustrate that selective engagement is gaining traction across key national-security institutions. These parallel moves suggest a wider recognition that treating every interaction as zero-sum is neither realistic nor in the interest of American, Chinese, or Russian security.

Other recent examples reinforce the point. The US and China have coordinated on precursor chemical controls and fugitive repatriations even without an extradition treaty.Quiet work with Russian counterparts against organized crime has continued despite the larger geopolitical climate. In each case, the governing principle is the same: Identify overlapping interests, establish disciplined mechanisms, and measure success by results rather than by empty moralism.

A model for multipolar security

Looking ahead, the Patel approach offers a template for how great powers can manage coexistence. It rejects both naive engagement and reflexive isolation. Instead, it practices disciplined pragmatism: Cooperate where interests align, and compete where they do not. In a world no longer organized around a single dominant power, the ability to work with ‘non-traditional’ partners on concrete problems is a strategic asset, not a liability.

The emerging US-China-Russia law-enforcement architecture will hardly dissolve deeper disagreements over Iran, Taiwan, Ukraine, or technological rivalry. It does not need to. Its value lies in demonstrating that even adversaries can still protect their interests from common threats. That demonstration strengthens, rather than weakens, national security. By proving that such cooperation is possible, Patel has expanded the toolkit available to American policymakers. In an unpredictable international environment, that expansion is both necessary and overdue.

US continues withdrawing tanker aircraft from Israel’s Ben Gurion airport: Israeli media

Channel 12 says number of US aerial refueling aircraft at airport is nearing levels seen during previous ceasefire

The number of US aerial refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel has declined, nearing levels seen during a previous ceasefire, Israeli Channel 12 reported Monday.

“The Americans continue to reduce the number of refueling aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport” near Tel Aviv, the broadcaster said.

The number of tanker aircraft had “already approached” levels seen during the ceasefire, when about 20 such aircraft were stationed at the airport, it added.

The channel did not provide the number of aircraft at the height of tensions.

The report comes as reports have circulated in recent days that the US and Iran could be nearing an agreement on outstanding issues, particularly navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies and trade.

US aircraft have been stopping at Ben Gurion for aerial refueling since the US-Israeli war on Iran began Feb. 28.

Channel 12 reported Sunday that the US Air Force “had begun withdrawing some of its refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport amid security developments.”

The move came after Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev pressed security officials to remove the tanker aircraft to maintain normal airport operations during peak travel days, the channel added.

According to the channel, more than 2.6 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport in August, averaging about 100,000 passengers a day, making it the busiest month since Oct. 7, 2023, as August is a popular vacation period for Israelis.

There was no immediate comment from Washington or Tel Aviv on the report.

Israel has previously debated the impact of US tanker aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion on civilian flight operations.

On July 14, Israel barred additional US aerial refueling aircraft from landing at Ben Gurion after their number reached 33. Regev said the aircraft were occupying spaces needed for civilian planes.

The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, objected to the decision the same day. Israel reversed the decision on July 15 following US protests.

didn't need to be told this

For decades, we were told to choose low-fat dairy. New research says otherwise

A new Canadian study led by University of Toronto professor Harvey Anderson adds to growing evidence that full-fat dairy can be part of a healthy diet.

In the 12-week study, 74 adults consumed different amounts of dairy under varying dietary conditions. The researchers found that eating three servings of full-fat dairy per day did not negatively affect body weight, body composition, energy metabolism, or blood lipid levels. The findings were recently published in The Journal of Nutrition.

Why Full-Fat Dairy Has Long Raised Concerns

Dairy foods contain saturated fat, which has traditionally been associated with higher cholesterol and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. As a result, dietary recommendations in Canada and many other countries have typically encouraged people to choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products as a way to reduce saturated fat intake.

Anderson, a professor of nutritional sciences at U of T's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, says the evidence from human research has not always matched those concerns. Numerous human studies have found no link between eating full-fat dairy and harmful health outcomes. Some studies, including recent research led by Temerty Medicine professor Kozeta Milliku, have even reported positive or protective effects associated with dairy consumption.

Testing Three Daily Servings of Dairy

For the current study, researchers randomly assigned 74 adults with overweight or obesity to one of three dietary groups. One group followed a low-dairy, calorie-restricted diet. A second group followed an energy-neutral diet that included three servings of dairy each day. A third group ate an unrestricted diet that also included three daily servings of dairy.

All participants received guidance on following Canada's food guide, and those assigned to the dairy groups were supplied with full-fat dairy products during the study.

After 12 weeks, researchers found no meaningful differences in weight gain, body composition, or cholesterol levels between people following the low-dairy diet and those eating three servings of dairy each day. Participants consuming more dairy, however, showed improvements in blood pressure and consumed more calcium, protein, and vitamin D.

"Those that had three servings of dairy didn't have adverse levels of blood cholesterol or lipids or evidence of insulin resistance," says Anderson.

Why Dairy May Behave Differently Than Saturated Fat Alone

The apparent mismatch between the expected harms of saturated fat and the neutral or beneficial effects seen in some dairy studies may be explained by what researchers call the dairy matrix hypothesis.

This idea suggests that the physical structure of dairy foods influences how their nutrients are digested, absorbed, and ultimately affect the body. In other words, the health effects of a food may depend on how its components interact rather than simply on the amount of one nutrient it contains.

"With dairy products, it's got two proteins casein and whey that are bound together with fat and with nutrients mixed in," says Anderson.
