Tesla and SpaceX will invest $16.8B to start building ‘Terafab’ chip factory in Texas

Tesla and SpaceX said Thursday that “Terafab,” the advanced chip factory they are jointly developing, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, outside Houston, and that they will make an initial investment of $16.8 billion in the project.

The factory will be “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far,” Elon Musk, CEO of both companies, wrote in a post on Thursday. More than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space is planned for the facility, according to SpaceX.

The companies say the facility will employ at least 3,000 people from Grimes and nearby Brazos County.

“The facility will be an advanced semiconductor fab that will bridge the divide between current global chip supply and the compute demand of the future,” a post on SpaceX’s website reads.

The animus behind Terafab is that Musk’s vision of the future — one where millions of robots take over human jobs, robotaxis do all the driving, and satellites become data centers for AI training and inference — requires a phenomenal amount of computing power, far more than what current production rates support.

SpaceX alone has suggested in filings that it may spend as much as $119 billion on the project across a “multi-phase” construction plan — although the company didn’t talk about Terafab at all on its first earnings call earlier this week.

Intel has said it will contribute to the Terafab project, although it’s been cagey about its exact contributions.

“Terafab will be epic in both its mission and in its sheer size, designed to build new compute at an unprecedented scale and speed. A vertically integrated factory with more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space is planned. This facility will house the manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory devices,” SpaceX writes on its website.

“Bringing these aspects together in one location will enable fast, recursive improvements and accelerate new compute deployed. Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX’s space-based data centers,” the company wrote.

SpaceX said in its post that it is “committing to the use of” water from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of local groundwater.

The announcement followed a heavily attended county meeting on Wednesday where hundreds of residents attended and raised concerns about millions of dollars in tax breaks awarded to the project, as well as a lack of transparency.

“We believe this agreement will strengthen our district, expand opportunities, and better prepare our students for their future,” Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz said in a statement released by the Texas Governor’s office. “There are defining moments in the life of a school district, and this is one of those moments. Our commitment now is to ensure that every opportunity created through this agreement is managed wisely, transparently, and always with students at the center of every decision.”

Convicted male murderer gets ‘bottom surgery’ while housed in Minnesota women’s prison, sources says

A male inmate has received so-called “bottom surgery” while serving a life sentence for murder at Minnesota’s women’s prison in Shakopee, multiple sources told Alpha News.

Bradley Sirvio is a convicted murderer who beat a man to death with a hammer and set the victim’s house on fire. He is one of several male inmates who have been transferred to Minnesota Correctional Facility-Shakopee after claiming to be a woman.

Since 2023, DOC policy has allowed men who identify as women to be housed at the Shakopee women’s prison. Alpha News has reported extensively on the issue, speaking with current and former inmates and employees who believe the policy is putting real women in danger.

Jayme Ali, a former Shakopee inmate who has been leading the charge against the DOC’s trans policy, said in the Alpha News documentary “Minnesota Mao” that Gov. Tim Walz’s administration “voluntarily put me in harm’s way.”

“I begged. My only options in there was to go into protective custody if I didn’t feel safe. Why should I have had to do that? I’m a woman. I was born a woman. DOC, your number one policy and obligation is to keep me, to keep us safe,” Ali said through tears.

“And you actually put us and put me in harm’s way. If that’s not cruel and unusual punishment, I don’t know what is,” she continued.

During a November protest outside the prison, speakers read from letters written by some of the female inmates who explained how the policy has “created an unsafe environment” and led to “more trauma.”

DOC said in a statement to Alpha News that it cannot “confirm, disclose, or discuss the private medical information for any individual” in its custody.

“It is important to understand that the agency is constitutionally and legally obligated to provide healthcare to people in state custody. Decisions about medical care and treatment are made by qualified healthcare professionals based on established standards and an individual patient’s clinical requirements,” the agency said.

Healthcare provided to those committed to the DOC’s custody is funded through the department’s appropriated healthcare budget, the statement continued.

“Because the DOC is constitutionally obligated to provide medically necessary healthcare, and regardless of the diagnosis or treatment needed, associated costs are borne by the department,” the agency added.

Minnesota State University diversity official convicted in $1 million tax fraud scheme

The DOJ said Cortez Hollis added more than $1 million in fraudulent business losses to client tax returns and sought approximately $387,000 in refunds clients were not entitled to receive.

The director of African American Affairs at Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato is no longer employed by the university after a federal jury convicted him of a tax fraud scheme prosecutors said generated approximately $387,000 in fraudulent tax refunds.

Cortez Hollis worked in the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) division, where he led the African American Affairs office.

A federal jury found Hollis guilty in June on 20 counts of aiding or assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Hollis owned and operated Hollis Tax Time, a Minnesota tax preparation business that prosecutors said he used to prepare false tax returns for clients.

Prosecutors said Hollis told clients he could obtain tax credits other preparers did not know about. Instead, they said he created fictitious businesses and claimed thousands of dollars in business losses clients had never incurred, generating tax refunds they were not entitled to receive.

The Justice Department said Hollis frequently paid himself tax preparation fees of $2,000 or more from those refunds, sometimes without his clients’ knowledge.

At trial, prosecutors established that Hollis added more than $1 million in fraudulent business losses to client tax returns and sought approximately $387,000 in refunds clients were not entitled to receive.

“No matter the scheme, the agency, or the program involved, those who cheat on their taxes for personal enrichment undermine the very foundation of public trust,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division.

Hollis faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison on each count. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled, according to the DOJ.

Just weeks after Hollis began serving as interim director of African American Affairs, MSU-Mankato’s Centennial Student Union published a profile highlighting what it described as his journey from homelessness to campus leadership.

A 2024 post recounted how Hollis said he went from sleeping in abandoned buildings and eating from garbage bins in inner-city Milwaukee to earning undergraduate degrees in ethnic studies and gender and women’s studies at MSU-Mankato in 2015, followed by a master’s degree in economics and multicultural studies. The university profile also said Hollis was pursuing a doctorate focused on ethnic studies.

Throughout the profile, Hollis described MSU-Mankato as the place where he found support and purpose.

He also said the university had “raised” him and expressed his desire to create that same sense of belonging for students.

“There are many students here hiding their fears because of how they were raised, the backgrounds in which they come from. This is our background. This is where we come from,” Hollis shared. “But this is how the university has changed us.”

MSU-Mankato told Alpha News that Hollis’ last day with the university was Aug. 2. The school did not say whether Hollis resigned, was terminated or left for another reason, despite being asked.

University officials said Hollis was hired Oct. 28, 2024, his position did not require a background check, and that his position was probationary at the time his employment ended. The university said it first became aware of Hollis’ legal troubles at the end of April.

Asked about the jury’s verdict, the university wrote, “Minnesota State University, Mankato is committed to providing a respectful and professional environment for employees and students alike. The University expects that employees abide by all state and federal laws both while at work and while on their own personal time.”
