The 2026 Greater Manchester mayoral by-election is taking place today, Thursday, July 30, 2026, to elect a successor to Andy Burnham, who resigned after becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Voting is open across the region from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, with results expected on Friday, July 31.
This historic contest is the largest by-election in UK history, involving over two million eligible voters across Greater Manchester’s ten boroughs. It marks the first time a by-election has been held for a strategic authority mayor in the UK and the first time Andy Burnham has not appeared on the ballot since the role’s creation in 2017.
The election uses the supplementary vote (SV) system, allowing voters to mark a first and second preference. The seven candidates standing are:
Bev Craig (Labour and Co-operative Party)
Sian Astley (Reform UK)
Geraldine Coggins (Green Party)
Phil Eckersley (Conservative and Unionist Party)
Marcus Jonathan Farmer (Independent)

Army conducts first overseas test of 'Hammer of the Gods' weapon-disrupting system
The U.S. Army (https://www.foxnews.com/category/tech/topics/us-army) on Sunday revealed it has tested a new warfare system overseas designed to covertly scramble the navigation signals used by enemy precision weapons, making it harder for adversaries to accurately strike targets from long distances while avoiding detection.
The electronic system, dubbed "Hammer of the Gods," was tested at sea off the U.S. West Coast for the first time in mid-July as part of the Project Convergence Capstone 6 (PC-C6) experiment.
While land-based versions have been demonstrated over the past two years, the exercise marked the official debut of the maritime variant, the Army said.
The portable signal disruptor can reportedly blind enemy to several precision-guided weapons such as long-range artillery, guided missiles and cruise missiles.

Jan. 14, 2013 - HHS turned me down on requests from CNN Wolf Blitzer and Soledad Brien. I asked John Burklow to call up Bill Hall and find out what the heck is going on and what the reason for all of this is. John told me that CDC complained to Bill Hall and HHS that I was getting all of the publicity on an issue (influenza "tracking") that they considered was their issue I do not know who at CDC did this. It could be anyone from Tom Frieden (I doubt this) to more likely Tom Skinner (CDC PR person). In any event, it has nothing to do with my use of the word "epidemic" on Wolf Blitzer Show and everything to do with pure lealousy that am a "rock star stealing their thunder. Shaon the CDC. I Hall promised John Burklow that as the epidemic stabilizes, I will allowed to do the big shows and that starting now, I can do anything that has to do with the science and vaccine development.
