Stocks rise on Big Tech gains, encouraging inflation signs: Live updates
Stocks rose on Wednesday, led by gains in major technology stocks, as traders reacted to more data showing inflation is cooling.
The S&P 500
gained 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite
added 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
added 298 points, or 0.6%.
Shares of Big Tech companies bolstered the market. Amazon
, Apple
and Microsoft
climbed around 3%, while Alphabet
moved up more than 1%. Additionally, shares of SpaceX
were in the green.
Investors grew optimistic on the state of inflation after New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said in a speechWednesday that “there are encouraging reasons to expect that inflation has peaked and should edge down in coming quarters.”
On Wednesday, the produce price index unexpectedly fell 0.3% in June, while economists had expected it to be unchanged on the month. That follows Tuesday’s cooler-than-expected consumer price index report, which bolstered hopes that the Fed may not need to raise interest rates as aggressively this year. The report prompted traders to scale back expectations for near-term Fed tightening.
The probability of a rate hike at the central bank’s July meeting fell to 17% from 42% a day earlier, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. Markets, however, continue to price in an increase later this year, with traders assigning a 63% probability that rates will be a quarter- or half-percentage point higher following the September meeting.
“While energy played a big role in the price deceleration, the easing was pretty broad and spread across a bunch of categories, a relief to investors,” Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, said in a note. “However, the Fed and economy aren’t in the clear – inflation is still elevated on an absolute basis, oil is back on an upswing, and AI is proving to be very inflationary at the moment.”
While equities were higher, gains were limited as crude prices remained elevated, however. That’s after U.S. Central Command said the U.S. launched more attacks against Iran. West Texas Intermediate futures
were last trading above $78 per barrel. International Brent
traded above $83 per barrel.

Another Democrat “rules for thee but not for me” scandal has erupted in New Hampshire.
According to court records, New Hampshire State Rep. Ellen Read (D-Newmarket), who is seeking reelection, has argued that deputies had no authority to stop or charge her because she was protected by “legislative privilege” while traveling to or from legislative duties.
Read has attempted to have both traffic cases dismissed on those grounds, even taking the issue to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, which declined to hear her appeal at this stage.

Summary
US forces struck coastal defense systems and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island in a 90-minute operation on Wednesday, CENTCOM said.
US forces launched a new wave of strikes on Iran at 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, targeting military capabilities used in attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, US Central Command said.
Iran's army said on Wednesday it would respond after a US strike on one of its barracks in southeastern Iran that it said killed seven military personnel.
US President Donald Trump said he would expand military strikes on Iran to power plants and bridges unless Tehran returned to negotiations, warning in a Fox News interview broadcast on Tuesday that attacks would intensify next week.

A leading Democratic senator has written to the boss of JP Morgan to request clarification on the bank’s contact with the child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Elizabeth Warren, the top Democrat on the senate banking committee, wrote to Jamie Dimon last week to ask if he took advice from Epstein while lobbying against a UK tax on banker bonuses, in a letter published by the committee on Monday.
“It is critical that Congress and the American public fully understand the extent of any interactions the bank and you had with Epstein,” the senator wrote.
Dimon, who has been chair and chief executive of the largest US bank for two decades, told a court in 2023 he had never met Epstein and had not heard the late sex offender’s name until his 2019 arrest.
But a cache of documents released by the US Department of Justice this year has piled pressure on Dimon, one of the most powerful figures on Wall Street, and raised fresh questions about his links with Epstein

Trump Does Not Rule Out Ground Invasion in Iran, Suggests US Will Take Kharg Island
President Trump on Tuesday sat for an interview with Fox News, where he suggested that a ground invasion may be imminent in Iran and that the US may take over Iran’s critical oil export hub of Kharg Island.

Trump also said the ongoing air campaign against Iran, which resumed last week, will “continue until I say it’s enough.”
