Every night, thousands of Starlink satellites silently cross the sky above us.
But there's something most people never think about…
In just the last six months, SpaceX has deliberately deorbited 260 Starlink satellites, sending them back into Earth's atmosphere, where they burn up during controlled reentry. Another 349 retired satellites are expected to follow the same path.
At first glance, this sounds like good news. Controlled reentry is far safer than leaving defunct satellites in orbit, where they could contribute to space debris and increase the risk of collisions.
However, scientists are now asking a new question:
What happens when thousands—or eventually tens of thousands—of satellites burn up in Earth's atmosphere every year?
Today, Starlink operates more than 10,000 active satellites, and SpaceX has proposed a long-term constellation of up to about 42,000 satellites. Because Starlink satellites are designed to operate for roughly five years, maintaining such a large constellation could eventually require several controlled reentries every day.
Researchers are investigating whether the aluminum oxide and other particles produced during satellite reentry could alter the chemistry of the upper atmosphere. Could they affect atmospheric chemistry, ozone, or even climate? At this stage, scientists don't have definitive answers, and the magnitude of any potential effects remains uncertain.
That's what makes this story so fascinating.
Humanity is building the largest satellite constellation ever deployed, but we're entering territory where science is still catching up. The benefits are significant—bringing high-speed internet to some of the world's most remote communities—but understanding the long-term environmental consequences is just as important.
Space exploration has always been about pushing boundaries. The next challenge may not be reaching farther into space, but learning how to use it responsibly.
