Bernie Moreno: ‘Embarrassing’ Congress Can’t Pass SAVE America Act

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) expressed that it was “embarrassing” that Congress has been unable to pass the SAVE America Act, while countries like Colombia have “incredibly accurate” ways to hold safe and fair elections.

While speaking with host Matthew Boyle on Breitbart News Saturday, Moreno, who had been in Colombia to observe the election there, spoke about how Colombia does not allow mail-in ballots, and requires not only voter ID, but proof of national citizenship.

“It’s kind of embarrassing from the perspective of Congress, that we can’t even pass a SAVE America Act. Let me lay out how Colombian elections are run. First of all, no mail-in balloting. Single day election, you have to have your proof of national citizenship with you to vote. So, it’s not only voter ID, but 100 percent strict proof of citizenship. If you don’t have it with you, they don’t even let you into the hall where you vote,” Moreno shared.

“All paper ballots, the ballots are counted by hand, and the results are delivered after an hour and a half, after polls close. They have election watchers there that are vigilant, they have judges there that are disputing any claims that are made.”

Moreno continued to explain that there had been around 750,000 election observers, volunteers, with roughly 13,000 from “outside the country.”

“It’s an incredibly accurate way to run an election. My takeaway, I felt embarrassed for the United States of America, and as a senator, I felt even more humiliation thinking that Congress can’t even pass proof of citizenship and proof of ID to vote in American elections.”

“And, what we saw in California, where they’re still counting ballots, is completely insane,” Moreno continued.

Moreno’s comments come as President Donald Trump has endorsed Abelardo de la Espriella, the conservative candidate running for president in Colombia.

“Because of his tremendous accomplishments in life, and his political support for me, personally, it is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on June 2. “‘EL TIGRE’ ABELARDO DE LA ESPRIELLA WILL NOT LET THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OF COLOMBIA DOWN!”

Espriella and Sen. Iván Cepeda, a far-left candidate for president in Colombia, will compete against each other in a runoff election on June 21.

Parents sentenced to prison in Brazil after excluding gender content in homeschool curriculum

A Brazilian couple was sentenced to 50 days in prison related to the homeschooling of their two daughters in an unprecedented case that has raised concerns regarding educational freedom and parental rights in Brazil.

Audato and Ieda Denardi were found guilty of the crime of “intellectual neglect” by a court in the state of São Paulo, even though the prosecution itself had requested their acquittal after concluding that the minors were not suffering from any neglect and were demonstrating appropriate academic and social development.

The Christian legal organization ADF International, which is representing the family in the appeal, denounced the case as “a grotesque abuse of criminal law” and stated that it would continue defending the couple.

The conviction, initially handed down in April 2026 and currently under appeal before the Seventh Criminal Court Chamber of the São Paulo State Court of Justice, will remain suspended while the appeal is being resolved.

Ieda Denardi expressed her distress and defended the right of parents to choose their childrenʼs education.

“As a mother, I cannot conceive of a more dictatorial state than the one that wants me in jail because I chose to exercise my right to direct the education and upbringing of my daughters,” she told ADF International.

“My husband and I are hopeful the court will recognize our right to choose the best education for our children and overturn this unjust conviction,” she added.

The couple began homeschooling their daughters in 2020 after realizing the limitations of the remote public education imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, they report a significant improvement in their daughters' academic performance and have been able to incorporate family values ​​and faith into their education.

One of the most striking aspects of the case is the reasoning the judge used to reach the verdict. According to the ruling, the educational program provided by the parents did not include content regarding “gender and sex education” or “tolerance and diversity.”

Furthermore, the court concluded that the fact that the girls, aged 15 and 11, do not enjoy popular musical genres such as “trap” or “sertanejo” demonstrated an alleged deficiency in their cultural education.

The judge cited this despite the fact that both girls are pianists with advanced training and are fluent in several languages.

“The prosecutor examined the witnesses and recommended acquittal. An independent educational psychologist found no sign of neglect. The girls themselves described rigorous daily education,” explained Julio Pohl, legal counsel for Latin America at ADF International.

However, “the judge convicted anyway,” he said, “because a fifteen-year-old said she finds some music lyrics morally questionable, and because the curriculum didn’t include state-approved content on gender.”

“A parent has been sentenced to prison not for failing to educate her children, but for educating them according to her own values. This is a grotesque abuse of the criminal law, and we will not let it stand.” Pohl pledged.

According to ADF International, more than 70,000 children are currently being homeschooled in Brazil. However, a lack of regulation has left thousands of families in a state of uncertainty.

The Denardi case sets a precedent as the first criminal conviction of parents for homeschooling their children.

Texas Moves to Recover Billions Spent on Biden-Era Border Crisis

After spending more than $10 billion on Operation Lone Star during the Biden administration, Texas is now seeking federal reimbursement.

Texas has formally submitted its request to the federal government for reimbursement of billions spent on Operation Lone Star, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday.

According to Abbott, the state has provided the Department of Homeland Security with the documentation required to seek repayment for border-security costs Texas incurred during the Biden administration.

“In March 2021, I launched Operation Lone Star to fill in the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border,” Abbott said in a statement. “For four years under Biden, Texas spent more than $10 billion of taxpayer money to secure the border. I have formally submitted Texas’ application to the Department of Homeland Security for reimbursement of costs Texas had to incur because President Biden refused to do his job.”

Last year, Congress included $13.5 billion in funding in President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” to reimburse states for border-security costs incurred during the Biden years.

Abbott had previously asked the federal government to repay Texas for roughly $11 billion spent on Operation Lone Star, the state’s border-security mission that deployed Texas National Guard soldiers and Department of Public Safety troopers to the southern border while also funding barriers, surveillance, and other enforcement measures.

Abbott’s office said Texas has borne the largest share of those costs and that the DHS submission puts the state in position to recover taxpayer funds.

The governor’s office also said Texas plans to submit a separate reimbursement request to the U.S. Department of Justice in the “near future.”

US to move forward with Turkey jet engine sales ahead of NATO summit

President Donald Trump is planning to move ahead with the sale of dozens of jet engines to Turkey worth hundreds of millions of dollars, despite objections from some members of the US Congress, according to four sources familiar with the matter. The deal is seen as an important signal to Ankara ahead of a NATO summit in Turkey next month.

The engines, produced by General Electric, will power Turkey’s first indigenous combat aircraft, the KAAN, a flagship defence project launched in 2016 as part of Ankara’s push to reduce reliance on foreign military suppliers. One source said the package could exceed $700 million in value.

Relations between Turkey and the US have been broadly positive under Trump, who has frequently spoken favourably of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, tensions remain over Washington’s decision to remove Turkey from the F-35 fighter programme and impose sanctions after Ankara purchased Russian S-400 air defence systems, which Washington says pose a security risk.

While the engine sale is likely to be welcomed in Ankara, analysts say it falls short of Turkey’s broader aim of rejoining the F-35 programme.

“Acquiring the engines is certainly important for Turkey, but it is also the lowest-hanging fruit for a US administration that has made far more ambitious promises,” said Gonul Tol of the Middle East Institute. She added that the key test in relations remains whether Turkey is readmitted to the programme.

US law does not allow Turkey to operate the S-400 system if it is to rejoin the F-35 project. The US ambassador to Turkey has previously said that talks between Trump and Erdogan had produced some of the most productive discussions in years.

Turkey will host NATO leaders on July 7 to 8, amid wider alliance tensions over defence spending and regional security concerns linked to recent Middle East conflicts.

Some members of Congress remain opposed. Representative Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has raised objections during review discussions, according to sources. However, the administration is expected to proceed, as congressional objections are not binding.

The State Department declined to comment on pending arms transfers, saying official communications with Congress are handled through established channels.

Turkey has been seeking approval for the engine deal for months, with officials previously expressing frustration over delays. The KAAN programme remains dependent on foreign engines in its early stages, with Turkish-developed alternatives expected in later phases of production.

Injuries reported in magnitude 5.6 NorCal quake

LATEST June 24, 12:55 p.m. Authorities reported that there is no major damage after a powerful earthquake rattled Northern California on Wednesday morning.

According to a news release from Mendocino County, some injuries were reported but no deaths as a result of the 5.6 magnitude quake. The office did not respond to SFGATE’s request for more information about the number of injuries.

Though officials didn’t report any damage to major public infrastructure, such as hospitals or water systems, some nearby residents reported damage in their homes. A photo from a Willits resident sent to KGO-TV show plates, cans and other kitchen items scattered across the floor, many of them shattered.

Power outages were reported in Laytonville, Willits, Leggett and Round Valley/Covelo, which are all near the quake’s epicenter. According to PG&E, there are 7,427 customers in Mendocino County without power, according to the utility’s outage map as of 12:02 p.m. Most of the outages, 4,868 customers, are in the unincorporated part of the county, and the remaining 2,559 outages are in Willits. A video shared with KGO also shows a grocery store in Lake County with dozens of items spilled on the floors. A similar scene was also documented at a gas station in Willits, KRON-TV reported, with shattered liquor bottles on the floor.

County officials are urging the public to avoid major roadways as Caltrans, PG&E and county workers continue to assess the damage and repairs.

Lucy Jones, a former seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told KCRA-TV that Wednesday’s shake was the largest earthquake in almost nine decades for the region.

June 24, 8:43 a.m. A strong quake measuring a preliminary 5.6 magnitude struck just north of Ukiah in Mendocino County shortly after 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor was reported at 8:10 a.m. with the epicenter located 11 kilometers north of Redwood Valley near the Mendocino National Forest and at a depth of about 8.1 kilometers. It was followed by a small magnitude 2.5 aftershock about seven minutes later.

The strong temblor set off the MyShake alert system, with people more than a hundred miles away in San Jose getting the blaring notification. Two more aftershocks measuring a magnitude 2.7 and 2.6 were reported about two hours after the initial rupture.

According to the USGS, thousands of people reported feeling the tremor. Reports came from hundreds of miles from the epicenter in areas like Sacramento, San Jose, and even Carson City, Nevada. The USGS estimates about 7,000 people may have felt “very strong” shaking and another 10,000 people may have felt “strong” shaking.

USGS seismologist Sarah Minson said the quake likely erupted along the Maacama fault in Mendocino County, which is linked to the Hayward and Calaveras faults found in the Bay Area.

“It’s kind of the northward extension of them,” she explained.

Despite the strength of the quake, the USGS reports that there is currently “little to no risk” of landslides or ground liquefaction in the area. Minson explained the quake likely ruptured about a mile of the fault line.

“It’s about the smallest earthquake that you would expect to be impactful,” Minson said.

The risk of a forthcoming larger quake remains small, with the USGS predicting a less than 1% chance for a greater than magnitude 6.0 or 7.0 in the area for the next week. There is a higher risk for moderate quakes, with the USGS forecasting a 7% risk of a magnitude 5.0 quake, a 40% risk of a magnitude 4.0 quake, and an 89% chance of a magnitude 3.0 tremor for the area through the next week.

Minson said the risk of another large quake dissipates exponentially.

“Every second that we’re talking and nothing happens, it’s great,” she said. “But then if something does happen, it’s going to take the probabilities up again.”

Massive $27M LA hospice fraud revealed as medical scammer used dead patients to fund lavish lifestyle: feds

Federal agents pounced on a slew of alleged medical fraudsters accused of massive schemes in Los Angeles — including a $27 million plot to steal the identities of dead people — as part of a national takedown by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in Washington, DC.

Authorities arrested five people accused of stealing millions in taxpayer dollars and charged five others, including a Van Nuys hospice owner accused of swiping the identities of dead people to fund a flashy car collection including a $530,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

In a Tuesday press conference, Blanche announced multiple takedowns that charged hundreds defendants nationwide.

The feds this year busted medical fraudsters accused of stealing more than $6.5 billion nationwide, including a record-breaking arrest of 455 alleged healthcare crooks in 45 states, the nation's top prosecutors said.

"Fraudsters can no longer rip off American taxpayers," Blanche said at the press conference from Department of Justice Headquarters on Pennsylvania Ave.

"If you seek to harm or cheat Americans, we will find you, seize any assets, and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law."

Federal authorities suspended Medicare payments to 1,000 people in the first half of the year, and much of the fraud occurs in California, said FBI Director Kash Patel.

"That's a lot of people," said Patel, with "nearly 800 by the way, from one state, California."

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called out Los Angeles as a hive of hospice fraud, pointing out that federal authorities have closed down 800 hospices in LA alone.

"One of the ways that we've been able to detect that fraud is, that in many of them, the patients never die, they live forever," said Kennedy. "That's not supposed to happen in hospices."

The California Post was there last week as federal agents swooped on Oren David Shachar, taking the owner of at least four hospices in the Los Angeles area into custody for an elaborate series of alleged schemes that involved stealing the identities of people to bill for hospice services.

Shachar allegedly funneled the money from his businesses to pay for luxury goods, including $15,000 taken directly from one of his hospices for the down payment on a lease-to-own Rolls-Royce Phantom, a car that carries a sticker price of nearly $530,000.

Shachar paid funeral home workers Abraham Shin and Jeannie Choi for the personal information of dead people that he used to bill the government for hospice services that were never provided, paying between $1,000 and $3,000 for each deceased person's identity, prosecutors charge.

In total, federal prosecutors in the Central District of California have brought criminal charges against 10 defendants who've allegedly engaged in fraud against government-funded health programs or abused their positions as doctors to illegally prescribe controlled substances.

"Public health programs are intended to support the elderly, the ill, the needy, and other vulnerable members of our communities," said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. "It is not there to enrich fraudsters."

Shachar, 59, of Van Nuys, and Shin, 66, of Corona, were arrested on June 18 and arraigned in US District Court in Los Angeles.

Both accused crooks, along with Choi, 57, of Torrance, are charged in a 16-count indictment alleging that they ripped off Medicare for approximately $27 million.

Choi was arrested Monday and is expected to appear Tuesday in US District Court in Los Angeles.

Shachar allegedly conspired with marketers Choi and Shin to submit false claims for hospice services for people who were not terminally ill or were already dead, authorities said, paying kickbacks to a local funeral home for the names of the dead.

Payments on the false claims went to at least four hospices controlled by Shachar, including Gentle Touch Hospice in Valley Glen, Oxford Hospice Care in Montclair, Art of Hospice in Encino, and Holly Trinity Hospice in Glendale, the feds said.

The Post was also on hand when federal agents on June 17 swarmed on Christina Mareik, 61, of Whittier, arresting her on a federal criminal complaint charging her with health-care fraud.

Federal authorities say Mareik submitted nearly $270 million in bogus Medi-Cal claims for expensive prescription drugs that were not medically necessary and, in many instances, not provided to the purported recipients.

Medi-Cal paid more than $178 million on fake drug claims, prosecutors charge.

Mareik allegedly worked for Paul Richard Randall, 67, of Orange, a patient marketer for Monte Vista Pharmacy, collaborating with Randall to bill the government for fake drug claims.
