Concordia is not a region of Antarctica; it’s a high, inland site on the East Antarctic Plateau where the French–Italian Concordia Station sits, used mainly for science and as a kind of “space-analogue” base on Earth.

Concordia is a permanent, year‑round research station jointly run by France and Italy.
It sits at Dome C (also called Dome Charlie), about 3,200–3,230 m above sea level on the East Antarctic Plateau, roughly 1,000–1,100 km inland from the coast and about 1,670 km from the South Pole.
It was built in the late 1990s–early 2000s and has been continuously occupied since 2005.
How it “fits” in Antarctica

Geographically, Concordia is one of only three permanent stations in Antarctica’s interior; the others are the U.S. Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station and Russia’s Vostok Station.
Politically, it lies inside the Australian Antarctic Territory claim but is operated under the Antarctic Treaty, so it is dedicated to peaceful scientific research rather than national control.
Logistically, it’s extremely remote: the nearest other station (Vostok) is about 560–600 km away, and the coast is about 1,000–1,200 km away, so supplies come via long over‑snow traverses and limited air links.
Why Concordia matters scientifically
The ice beneath Dome C is roughly 3,300–4,000 m thick, which makes it ideal for deep ice‑core drilling to reconstruct past climate; the EPICA project there has produced an 800,000‑year climate record and aims to push beyond one million years.
The extremely cold, high, dry, stable atmosphere (winter temperatures can drop to about −80 °C, with very low humidity and little wind) makes it a prime site for astronomy, atmospheric physics, seismology, geomagnetism, and ozone and air‑chemistry studies.
