Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing to convene the first meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with defining the mandate of a government-appointed inquiry into the Oct. 7 failures, despite Justice Minister Yariv Levin being named to lead the forum three weeks ago.

Levin told Netanyahu at the time that he did not want to chair the committee and asked to be replaced — a request that, according to officials familiar with the matter, stemmed in part from ongoing tensions between the two. Netanyahu initially declined, but advisers now urge him either to lead the panel himself or appoint a close ally to do so.

Brian Divine, who goes by "Kaizen DIY Gym" online, was charged on Monday with six counts of felony child seduction following his arrest the day before Thanksgiving.

On Nov. 26, Indianapolis police went to Divine’s home on Indy’s north side to investigate a rape involving a 16-year-old girl. The 44-year-old Divine was found in the basement of the home and taken into custody.

During their investigation, police spoke with the girl who said she and Divine got drunk and had “sexual encounters” on three separate occasions. The girl also said Divine gave her drugs and alcohol during the times they were together, either at his home or at his warehouse on the city’s west side.

Former Arkansas DHS staffer arrested with child sex abuse material on cell phone pleads not guilty

A former staffer with the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) arrested in October for possession of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) has pleaded not guilty, according to court documents.

Alejandro Hernandez, 30, of Elkins, was arrested on Oct. 30, for three counts of distributing, possessing and viewing child pornography. At the time of his arrest, court documents said he was working at DHS as a child services investigator.

He is scheduled to appear in Judge Joanna Taylor’s courtroom on Jan. 15 and has been ordered to have no access to the internet.

Case background

A probable cause affidavit said Hernandez was taken into custody after a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led police to a video depicting the sexual assault of a child.

Hernandez was using the alias ‘Juan Gonzalez’ on social media, per the affidavit.

In the report, the investigator explains that they obtained a subpoena to inspect the social media account for ‘Juan Gonzalez’ and found “at least four other CSAM files that depicted pre-pubescent children being sexually abused by adults.” The affidavit also says there was one video depicting a child being forced to engage in sex acts with an animal.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner had traveled to Moscow for talks with Putin and his closest aides on a draft peace plan aimed at ending the almost four-year war in Ukraine.

The talks lasted five hours, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reportersafter the discussions, saying the meeting focused on a U.S.-drafted peace plan and was “very useful, constructive, and highly informative” but that there was more work to be done.

“We agreed on some things … while others caused criticism, and the President [Putin] also made no secret of our critical, even negative, attitude toward a number of proposals.But the main thing is that we had a very useful discussion,” Ushakov said, in comments translated by NBC News.

It’s unclear which peace plan was presented to the Russians after an initial 28-point plan, secretly devised by the U.S. and Russia, was presented to Ukraine a few weeks ago.

Kyiv and its European allies hastily amended that plan, whittling it down to 19 proposals, with Ukrainian officials travelling to Florida last weekend for more talks on the proposals.

Russia and Ukraine are miles apart when it comes to central elements of a framework peace agreement, with Moscow demanding that Kyiv cede partially occupied territory in the east of the country to Russia, and disagreeing over Western-backed security guarantees for Ukraine.

Putin aide Ushakov said Tuesday that both sides had discussed a 27-point plan and had received more documents from the U.S. side, although he did not elaborate as to what those contained. He added that Russia and the U.S. had agreed to not disclose details of the talks.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kremlinspokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it would be incorrect to say Putin had rejected the proposals put to him by the U.S. delegation.

“A direct exchange of views took place yesterday for the first time,” Peskov said, in comments cited by the Reuters news agency. “Some things were accepted, some things were marked as unacceptable — this is a normal working process of finding a compromise.”

‘Ready’ for war

The talks in Moscow came after Putin launched a tirade against Europe, saying that its counter peace proposals were “absolutely unacceptable” for Russia, and that the region’s leadership had “no peace agenda.”

“We’re not going to war with Europe; I’ve said that a hundred times. But if Europe suddenly wants to fight us and starts, we’re ready right now,” Putin told journalists ahead of his meeting with Witkoff and Kushner.

Europe will have watched Tuesday’s talks in Russia closely. There are concerns that Trump, who has appeared to have a warmer relationship with Putin than with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at times, could throw his support behind Russia’s peace proposals in a bid to end the war sooner rather than later.

No hurry for a deal

Geopolitical experts say the Kremlin is willing to eke out the peace process for as long as possible, with Russia maintaining that it has the advantage on the battlefield and can extract heavy concessions from Ukraine in the peace process.

Paul Skinner, investment director at Wellington Management, was also pessimistic over any near-term progress toward peace.

“We think the Ukraine-Russia story is going to grind on, and on, and on,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Wednesday.

“It’s very unlikely we’re going to get a resolution. While Putin is still making ground, he’s unlikely to sue for peace. I’m afraid that our prognosis, and it has been from the start, is that this is going to be a very long drawn-out problem.”

Michael Froman, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said it was in Putin’s “interest just to keep the process going, to have a long process of diplomatic engagement.”

“He wants to have abroader conversation about Russia’s reintegration with the West and relations with the United States, commercial agreements with the United States, and to make this long and drawn out while he continues to bomb Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and makes incremental progress on the ground,” Froman told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday.

Amos Hochstein, TWG Global managing partner and former senior advisor to the president in the Biden administration, agreed that Russia would likely drag its heels over a deal.

“I think it’s difficult to get to a point of a deal where a lot of territory has to be given up by the Ukrainians in return for security guarantees that are a bit loose and flimsy, and for the Ukrainians who fought so much over the last several years, that’s hard to swallow,” he said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“I think the problem is that the Ukrainians probably can compromise in some of this, but any concessions they would get from the U.S. on that deal would be difficult to get the Russians to agree to [as they] depend on the war, want to win, but also have a war economy.”

Netanyahu pushed Trump on pardon request – Axios

The US president last month asked his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, to fully pardon Netanyahu in a long-standing corruption case

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied US President Donald Trump for stronger backing for his bid for a presidential pardon over a long-running corruption case, Axios has reported, citing officials.

Netanyahu last week formally asked Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon him from a case in which he has been entangled for over a decade. The plea came after Trump, a staunch Netanyahu ally, urged Herzog in November to grant a full pardon.

During a call on Monday, Netanyahu asked Trump for more help in his push for a pardon from the Israeli president, according to Axios. Trump expressed confidence that the effort would ultimately succeed but stopped short of committing to new steps==, the outlet reported, citing US and Israeli officials familiar with the exchange.

“Netanyahu wants Trump to do more, but the president has done all he can do,” one American official told Axios.

Trump’s letter to Herzog last month dismissed the charges against Netanyahu as “a political, unjustified prosecution” and demanded a full pardon. Critics said the gesture risks undermining Israel’s judiciary and turning pardons into political weapons.

Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister ever to stand trial, facing charges of fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes in three separate cases alleging he traded political favors for lavish gifts from wealthy associates.

Indicted in 2019, he has pleaded not guilty and insists the case is a politically motivated campaign by the media, police, and judiciary to remove him from power. The trial, which began in 2020, has been repeatedly delayed and is expected to drag on for years.

Critics argue that Netanyahu has used Israel’s ongoing conflicts to insulate himself from legal jeopardy and maintain his hold on power.

In his plea for clemency, Netanyahu said a pardon would allow him to devote “all of his time, abilities, and energy” to leading Israel through what he called “critical times.” Herzog’s office said the president will review the request once he receives the full set of legal opinions.

Rubio also rebuked calls for the US to negotiate solely with Kiev. “You can’t end the war between Russia and Ukraine without talking to Russia,” he said, stressing that the US is working to “bridge the divide between both sides.”

“We’ve gotten closer, but we’re still not there… I hope it changes,” Rubio added.

Rubio’s remarks follow a nearly five-hour meeting at the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US envoy Steve Witkoff, and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Senior Kremlin aideYury Ushakov, who also attended, described the talks as “rather useful, constructive, rather substantive,” but said “a compromise hasn’t been found” and “there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

The discussions were focused on the American-backed peace framework, which initially revolved around a 28-point draft that leaked to the media last month.The roadmap reportedly required Kiev to relinquish parts of Donbass still under its control, abandon its NATO ambitions, and limit the size of its armed forces.

Kiev and its EU backers, however, have refused to contemplate any concessions to Russia, despite Ukrainian forces being firmly on the back foot in Donbass and elsewhere.(hence Russia continues to take more territory.)
