Prime Minister Mark Carney's latest 'big announcement' simply fast-tracked five projects that had already met regulatory milestones.

Prime Minister Carney's latest "nation-building" projects announcement was just smoke in mirrors. Instead of being something new and innovative, his cabinet fast-tracked previously announced ventures, including a five-month-old nuclear research program, according to Blacklock’s.

On Thursday, Carney confirmed all five projects were approved and "substantially advanced." These include British Columbia's Red Chris and Saskatchewan's McIlvenna Bay copper mines, an expanded LNG Canada plant in Kitimat, B.C., expanded Port of Montréal, and a prototype Darlington Nuclear small modular reactor (SMR) in Bowmanville, Ontario.

These five projects were fast-tracked under Bill C-5, An Act to Enact The Free Trade and Labour Mobility Act, passed June 26. This bill allows cabinet to accelerate approval for industrial projects deemed "in the national interest."

However, cabinet’s Backgrounder document stated that none of the five projects were new. It noted that the initial projects had already met regulatory milestones after engaging extensively with First Nations, provincial governments, local authorities, proponents, and stakeholders.

“The first five projects you’ve identified have already begun and are quite advanced, so what does green-lighting them change?” asked a reporter. “In some cases, they are at the last stage of regulatory approvals,” replied Carney.

A teacher in Canada has reportedly been accused of showing the shooting of Charlie Kirk to a group of students over and over again and told the students that the political commentator got what he deserved in the political assassination.

According to the Toronto Sun, the Toronto District School Board is now investigating allegations that a teacher at Scarborough elementary school showed a 5th and 6th grade class a video of Kirk getting shot to death at Utah Valley University campus over and over again.

“Several students from his class went home and complained to their parents, traumatized at witnessing the on-camera death, which they were forced to witness numerous times over,” one source familiar with the situation told the outlet. “Parents subsequently reached out to school administrators, who will be putting him on leave at the start of the school day September 12th 2025.”

In a letter sent home to parents, school principal Jennifer Koptie told parents, “We are writing to inform you about an incident that is reported to have taken place in your child’s class yesterday. “The teacher has been relieved of all teaching responsibilities pending the outcome of the investigation and will not be at the school,” she added. "I also want to assure you that our top priority is supporting students. Social Work support has been made available to the school today, and I will be visiting the class along with a member of our Social Work team to check in with students and provide support. The Federal Court of Appeal has declined an application from a B.C. ostrich farm for another stay order against a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) cull order for its 400 birds.

Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., was ordered by the CFIA in December 2024 to cull its flock of ostriches after the agency said that 69 birds died of a “flu-like illness” and testing showed two of the birds had H5N1, or avian flu.

The farm has said that its animals have recovered from the virus and have immunity and are being used for research. It has filed a legal challenge against the cull order, but the Federal Court upheld CFIA’s order in a June decision. The farm owners appealed that ruling, but the Federal Court of Appeal rejected the application in August. The farm owners previously applied for a judicial review of the CFIA order but the request was denied.

A stay order was granted to the farm on Sept. 6, with the appeal court saying the interim order would remain until the stay motion was decided “on the basis of a full record.”

In a Sept. 12 decision, Justice Gerald Heckman said the farm failed to establish any “serious or arguable issue” for the case to be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Heckman said that he did have sympathy for the farmers, but added they had been given “full and meaningful opportunity” to challenge the CFIA order and had not been successful. Continue…

Song also said the law society violates his Charter rights, saying its move amounts to “compelled speech, forced ideological conformity, and suppression of conscience and expression,” according to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), which represented Song in the lawsuit.

The 30-day evaluation was ordered in August after Sergio Yanes Preciado, 24, was charged with assault causing bodily harm. On Aug. 8, the victim was assaulted in front of his young children at Dickie-Moore Park. The assault was recorded on video and posted on social media.

While the victim is seen lying injured on the ground, the assailant tossed what appears to be a kippah into a puddle of water in a splash pad.

On Friday, Quebec Court Judge Joëlle Roy said she received the report on the 30-day evaluation to determine whether the accused can be found criminally responsible for his actions.

The hearing was inside a courtroom along with dozens of other cases on the role for Friday. Roy was careful to only make vague references to the evaluation. She said the court would not have the required time Friday afternoon to hold a full hearing on the report’s conclusions. She agreed to schedule the hearing for Monday.

“I have read the report completely. What I think is that the victim in the case has an interest in reading it,” Roy said, asking a prosecutor if she could authorize this. “(The report) is very complete and there is a dimension to it that is important to the victim.” Continue…

Ten people were arrested when a demonstration calling for deportations and an end to mass immigration was met by a counter-demonstration in a Toronto park known as the scene of an historic antisemitic riot.

Hundreds of people supporting mass immigration gathered at Toronto’s Christie Pits Park on Saturday afternoon in response to a demonstration encouraging mass deportations called “Canada First.”

Organizers of the Canada First rally took to social media last month to promote their event, with a poster advertising it for 1 p.m. reading, “Stop mass immigration. Start mass deportations. Remigration is necessary.”

Numerous pro-mass immigration counter rallies had planned their own community rallies at the park with a start time of noon.

“Bring friends, water, snacks, art supplies and noisemakers and anything else you’ll need to spend an afternoon in the park,” one post promoting the counter-rally read.

In 1933, thousands of people converged at the park for one of Canada’s most notable antisemitic riots and counter-protests that broke out after a Nazi-inspired flag with a Swastika was pulled out during a baseball game.

A letter of responsibility was published on Indymedia, a website where many leftist groups publish such letters following attacks.

Berlin’s interior senator, Iris Spranger (SPD), said the letter was authentic.

In fact, the letter has many similarities to another letter published in February following a similar arson attack near the Tesla car factory in Grünheide near Berlin, which also led to a major loss of power in Berlin.

“We assume the group of perpetrators is from the left-wing extremist spectrum,” said the Interior Senator. “So that means: not from abroad, but from within the country.“

German media and authorities are indicating that the perpetrators conducted the attacks with a high degree of professionalism.

The attack was conducted in the Johannisthal district and involved an arson attack on two electricity pylons on Tuesday morning. It resulted in the longest power outage in 25 years, leaving up to 50,000 residents without power, with many thousands without power for over 60 hours.

The power outage has proven extremely difficult to repair.

Spranger implied that the attacks, which cut power to thousands of homes, led to deaths; however, it is unclear what she is referring to. She said the perpetrators accepted the deaths of people as “collateral damage”

“It is completely unacceptable that any organization listed as a terrorist entity by the Government of Canada continues to exist as a federally registered not-for-profit organization,” Joly wrote on X. “I have therefore directed government officials to urgently look at any and all options to formally dissolve Samidoun as well as any and all listed terrorist entities in Canada.”

Samidoun, also known as the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, has organized ongoing protests in Canada following the Hamas attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killed approximately 1,200 people. The Canadian government listed Samidoun as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code last fall.

Public Safety Canada said the designation of Samidoun on Oct. 15, 2024, was done in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which on the same day announced the group had been designated a global terrorist.

The Criminal Code prohibits anyone from providing financial services, money or property to Samidoun since its designation as a terror group, but it continues to be listed as an “active” registered not-for-profit in Canada.

“Unprovoked, they began violently beating this male,” McCabe said, noting that one of the suspects was allegedly “armed with a hammer.”

The pair fled the area and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was later released, McCabe said. The victim was found dead outside on Sept. 4, and police later determined he had succumbed to his injuries from the attack.

The man’s identity has not been released because police are still working to find and notify his next-of-kin.

The incident was one in a series of five “violent” attacks that took place that morning in Toronto’s downtown, McCabe said. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says it will take over administering the federal vaccine injury program from a third-party company after questions about the program’s operation.

The decision comes weeks after the federal health department launched an investigation into the company, Oxaro, and started looking for alternative ways to deliver the program.

The Vaccine Injury Support Program was announced in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide compensation for those injured after taking a Health Canada approved vaccine.

Health Minister Marjorie Michel’s office confirmed that a funding agreement with Oxaro will end on March 31, 2026, and the government will then take over the program, according to Global News. The minister’s office said more details will be shared when they are available.

The decision to change the administration of the program follows criticism that included a letter from four Conservative MPs calling for a meeting of the Standing Committee on Health to address media reports about the program.

Aircraft bound for Makepeace lake went down about 40 kilometres south of St. Theresa Point First Nation

RCMP say two men and two women who were from a northern Manitoba First Nation died in a plane crash in the province on Saturday.

Police say the pilot suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Mounties say in a news release that their detachment in Island lake, Man., got a report on Saturday evening that a plane had crashed approximately 40 kilometres south of St. Theresa Point First Nation, near Makepeace Lake.

They say the flight originated in St. Theresa Point First Nation and was destined for Makepeace Lake.

Mounties chartered a helicopter to fly to the crash, and they say search-and-rescue personnel from CFB Trenton were also dispatched to the scene.

They say the 20-year-old man who was flying the plane suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while his four passengers, two men aged 53 and 49, and two women who were both 50, all from St. Theresa Point First Nation, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the Transportation Safety Board has been notified and have deployed to the site.

Three Jewish sites in Halifax were vandalized with antisemitic graffiti overnight Saturday, an act the Nova Scotia premier called “disgraceful” and a local rabbi described as an “escalation.”

The two synagogues tagged were Shaar Shalom and Beth Israel. In addition, a Chabad-Lubavitch of the Maritimes Rohr Family Institute building was hit. The graffiti included a Nazi swastika and the words “Jews did 9/11.”

Rabbi Yakov Kerzner of Beth Israel synagogue told CBC News that the graffiti was discovered on Sunday morning, and that the vandalism is believed to have occurred while congregants were inside the building for Saturday evening services.

“We haven’t experienced this until now in Halifax,” he said. “But this is an escalation which does concern the Jewish community.” Kerzner added that “it’s antisemitism, it’s pure anti-Jew hatred.”

The judge heard a summary of the facts of the evidence and was presented with a report from a psychiatrist who examined the accused at the Philippe-Pinel Institute following her arrest.

The psychiatrist found that the woman, whose name cannot be published, was suffering from a mental illness on June 15 and was unable to tell right from wrong.

The judge then began hearing evidence to determine whether the woman should be released or detained at the mental health hospital and allowed to make unescorted leaves.

The defence is seeking the last option while the Crown is opposed to the unescorted leaves.

The woman’s father was the first to be called as a witness for the defence. He said his daughter suffered from a mental illness for a while. He said she received a bipolar diagnosis first, “but that changed later to something like a mini-schizophrenia.”

The father said he believed his daughter’s mental illness can be managed outside of a hospital as long as she takes her medication. The father said he learned that his daughter had been having conversations with the artificial intelligence application Chat GPT. “ Continue…

In an August interview with local media outlet Thorold Today, Renee Moor, founder and executive director of Journey Home for Empowered Living and Dying, revealed her plans to build Ontario’s first death “sanctuary” to end the lives of Canadians through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).

“We offer that guidance in what the family needs, so it’s very open and broad,” she said. “I’ve never had one doula client that is really receiving similar support. It’s showing up for them and opening conversations of what do they want this experience to be like for them.”

Moor is a Buddhist psychotherapist and a certified death doula, a trained professional who provides emotional, practical, and spiritual support to individuals who are dying and their loved ones.

Moor is known for founding and running Journey Home, a non-profit organization whose services mainly entail facilitating MAiD requests.

Now, Moor plans to expand Journey Home by building a $500,000 death “sanctuary” for vulnerable or ill Canadians seeking to end their lives with MAiD. While Moor heavily emphasized using the space for MAiD patients, it will also be available for those who wish to die naturally.

According to a new order paper response, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has already spent $15.2 million to set up its framework for the law. That includes $11.9 million in fattened salaries and $3.3 million in operational costs, with $9 million torched in the 2024-25 fiscal year alone.

And it doesn’t stop there. The regulator admits it will need $9.7 million every year going forward to maintain the systems and staff required. In fact, the CRTC has already hired 59 new full-time employees just to enforce this law.

“There have been conversations with the companies, and clearly we wanted to make sure that there would be a net benefit to Canada, but I think right now that it’s not enough,” Joly told reporters on her way to a cabinet meeting in the House of Commons on Sept. 16.

Last week, Teck and Anglo reached an agreement to combine the two companies to form a copper mining powerhouse worth about $70 billion. The companies proposed the deal as a “merger of equals,” and plans include sourcing upper management and board representation roughly equally between the two. The deal would also see company headquarters of what would be known as Anglo Teck move to Vancouver.

Joly said she would like to see longer-term commitments to Canada before approving the deal. She said while it’s important to think about the short term, the long term also need to be considered in determining whether the merger will benefit Canada.

“We need to think about longer term and how we can make sure that ultimately we create jobs, but we have a strong headquarters, not only now, but also for the next decade,” Joly said.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) says many members of his team are concerned by the federal government’s apparent absence of fiscal anchors to rein in spending.

“I don’t know that the government currently has fiscal anchors, which, of course, causes the people that I work with a considerable degree of concern at this point,” interim PBO Jason Jacques told the government operations committee on Sept. 16.

Jacques said the previous Liberal government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had the anchors of keeping Canada’s annual deficit at 1 percent of GDP, as well as maintaining a declining debt-to-GDP ratio.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Mexico this week to meet with its president Claudia Sheinbaum, as the two leaders seek to strengthen ties and increase their countries’ economic resilience in the face of U.S. tariffs.

This will be Carney’s first official trip to Mexico and comes on the heels of an August visit to the country by a high-level delegation, which included Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.

Sheinbaum had visited Canada in June after receiving an invitation to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit hosted by Carney in Kananaskis, Alberta.

“I’m looking forward to very comprehensive discussions with the Mexican president,” Carney said on Sept. 16 before a cabinet meeting in Ottawa. “It’s a great opportunity to get into depth on a wide range of issues.”

Carney said discussions would revolve around trade and security, among other issues. “Everything is on the table,” he said. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the visit on Sept. 18 and 19 will also focus on infrastructure, investment, and energy.

Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland says she has resigned from cabinet and will not be seeking re-election. The long-time cabinet minister will remain an MP for the rest of her term, and will now serve as special envoy for Ukraine.

Freeland, a former deputy prime minister, minister of finance, and foreign affairs minister under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, made the announcement in a Sept. 16 statement.

Freeland said that she is not leaving her post to spend more time with her family or because of the strain caused by political life. “For me and for my wonderful husband and children, public service has been a privilege and not a sacrifice,” she said.

She added that she is stepping down to make way for others and to pursue other endeavours herself.

“After twelve fulfilling years in public life, I know that now is the right time for me to make way for others and to seek fresh challenges for myself,” Freeland said.

In a statement published shortly after Freeland’s, Prime Minister Mark Carney said she will now serve as Canada’s new Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, while keeping her duties as MP. Since purchasing a four-story apartment building at 296 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn in 2001, James has failed to register the property with the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) as required for rent-stabilized buildings.

By failing to register, she denied her tenants the protections of rent stabilization, while collecting rents above the legally regulated amounts for 24 years.

On Wednesday the European Commission presented a proposal for new tariffs and sanctions aimed at pressuring Israel to quickly end its military operations in Gaza, in addition to sanctions measures on two Israeli ministers known for their fiery anti-Palestinian rhetoric.

"The horrific events taking place in Gaza on a daily basis must stop," EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after presenting the proposal to the EU Council. "There needs to be an immediate ceasefire, unrestrained access for all humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages held by Hamas."

The measures would if implemented constitute a major, historic blow to EU-Israel relations. The commission appears to be largely responding to the new Gaza City offensive, confirmed to be in full swing this week, and the major United Nations investigation just released which concluded that Israel is guilty of genocide.

"We're not proposing to suspend trade with Israel, we are proposing to suspend trade preferences," said a senior unnamed European official.

Brussels is pressing ahead with a plan to use €170 billion of Russia’s frozen sovereign assets to back “reparation loans” for Ukraine, the Financial Times has reported. The EU faces growing pressure to find additional funding for Kiev as US cuts back its support.

Moscow has condemned the asset freeze and warned that any seizure of its money would amount to “theft.”

Western nations froze an estimated $300 billion in Russian funds after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 – some €200 billion of which is held by Brussels-based clearinghouse Euroclear. The funds have accrued billions in interest, and the West has explored ways to use this revenue to finance Ukraine. While refraining from outright seizure, the G7 last year backed a plan to provide Kiev with $50 billion in loans to be repaid using the profits generated by the funds. The EU pledged $21 billion.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has proposed going further by creating a ‘reparation loans’ mechanism, which she described as urgently needed to finance Kiev.

People familiar with discussions said the plan involves channeling cash balances from Russia’s immobilized assets into EU-issued bonds, with the proceeds transferred to Ukraine in tranches. Bank Of Canada Resumes Rate Cuts After 6 Month Pause

The Bank of Canada cuts rates by 25bp to 2.50%, as expected. This was the 8th consecutive rate cut since the easing cycle started one year ago, and took place after the bank paused following its last rate cut in March, 6 months ago.

Governor Tiff Macklem said that while "considerable uncertainty remains", there was a "clear consensus" within the committee for the first rate cut since March, as slowing population gains and a weak labor market were a drag on consumption while the economy was weaker and there was "less upside risk to inflation." The BoC head explained that the "Governing Council judged that a reduction in the policy rate was appropriate to better balance the risks going forward." Additionally, he noted the upward pressure on CPI has diminished.

The BoC removed the language from the prior statement which said, "if a weakening economy puts further downward pressure on inflation and the upward price pressures from the trade disruptions are contained, there may be a need for a reduction in the policy interest rate".

Governor General Mary Simon spent over $7,400 on clothing and shoes last year, including $1,117 on shoes, an $875 blazer, a $675 wool jacket, and a $165 silk camisole, according to Blacklock’s. This follows multiple warnings from MPs about her spending habits.

The data, sourced from Statistics Canada’s Homicide Survey, includes suspects who were not behind bars but under forms of legal supervision such as bail, probation, or conditional sentences at the time of their crimes. Homicide, in this context, includes murder, manslaughter, and infanticide.
