Google has agreed to purchase power from a planned nuclear fusion plant in the 2030s as it seeks to lock in the massive electricity supplies needed for the boom in data centres and artificial intelligence.

The technology group has committed to buying 200 MW of electricity from Commonwealth Fusion Systems’ (CFS) planned power station in Virginia under a multiyear power purchase agreement, the companies said in a statement.

Google has been an investor in CFS since 2021 and also is increasing its investment stake in the Massachusetts-based company, the statement said.

CFS did not provide the exact dollar figure for the Google deal, but said that it was in the multibillions.

The deal for 200 MW of energy – about enough to power 75,000 homes – from CFS’s first commercial Arc plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, marks the first direct deal between a customer and a fusion energy company, and the largest deal of this scale in terms of energy provided.

The deal accounts for roughly half of the expected energy production from the plant, with an option to purchase more energy from future plants.

In 2023, Microsoft signed a deal with Helion Energy for 50 MW of fusion energy, to be provided through Constellation Energy as the power marketer. That deal included a commitment to start producing by 2028.

CFS, which raised a record $1.8bn (€1.5bn) from investors including Google in 2021, hopes the proposed 400 MW Arc facility will be the first fusion power station to be connected to the grid.

CFS, which is backed by Bill Gates’s technology fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, is currently building a demonstration plant in Massachusetts which it aims to operate in 2027. It hopes the plant that would supply Google will be ready by the early 2030s.

The deal comes as technology companies including Google, owned by Alphabet, compete to lock in access to electricity to supply the rollout of data centres required to power AI systems.

MethaneSAT, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) methane-tracking satellite backed by the Bezos Earth Fund, is lost in space.

Its ground team lost contact with the spacecraft on June 20 but tried to reestablish a connection until it learned in the morning of July 1 that MethaneSAT had lost power altogether.

The team believes that the satellite is likely not recoverable. MethaneSAT collected data on methane emissions that have previously been untrackable in an effort to combat climate change.

Methane is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, with agriculture, fossil fuels and waste decomposition being the largest sources.

In its announcement, the MethaneSAT team said that the spacecraft's observations have given us critical insight about the distribution and volume of methane being released from oil and gas production regions.

Thanks to the satellite, scientists have also developed the capability to "interpret the measurements from space and translate them into volumes of methane released." That knowledge can be used in future missions.

EDF developed the mission, which launched in March 2024, to hold the countries who previously pledged to slash their methane emissions accountable.

It created Google Cloud-powered algorithms to calculate and monitor methane emitted in certain regions with held from Harvard and Smithsonian scientists.

While the satellite itself is gone, the MethaneSAT team vowed to work with other scientists to leverage the algorithms and software developed for the project.

The team will also continue processing the data the satellite had sent back.

James Webb telescope discovers tentacled 'jellyfish' galaxy swimming through deep space

Astronomers have discovered what seems to be a new "jellyfish" galaxy about 12 billion light-years away from Earth using high-resolution imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The galaxy appears to have tentacle-like trails of gas and stars jutting off from one side, likely making it a jellyfish galaxy — a class of galaxies that drip tendrils of star-forming material as they swim through space.

Though more analysis is needed to confirm whether the newfound galaxy truly falls into this category, all signs so far indicate that it does.

Ian Roberts, an astronomer at Waterloo University, found the unique galaxy while sifting through images taken by JWST. His team's research is available to read on the preprint server arXiv, but has not yet been peer reviewed.

"The fact that an interesting galaxy such as this one could be found in such a cursory way suggested that there would be real value in doing a truly systematic search for these sorts of objects," Roberts told Live Science in an email.

Jellyfish galaxies

Jellyfish galaxies develop their tentacles as they undergo a phenomenon called ram pressure stripping, which happens when a galaxy moves through the dense medium between other closeby galaxies within a galaxy cluster.

This movement eventually pushes some gas and stars out of the roaming galaxy, leaving them to trail behind. These tentacles sometimes trigger a large number of stars to form.

Though astronomers don't believe this kind of pressure stripping to be rare in nearby space, the jellyfish stage is short on the cosmic timescale, so it's unusual to capture these aquatic forms before they disappear, Roberts said.

Farther out in the universe, though, where JWST observed this new jellyfish galaxy, "we really have no idea" how common they are, Roberts said.

Jellyfish galaxies provide a way to study galaxy evolution and star formation. Some galaxies in dense environments form many fewer new stars than others, and understanding the reasons why is fundamental to our understanding of how galaxies change over time.

Stars are also affected by ram pressure stripping. Though a surge of new stars may form in the trail behind a jellyfish galaxy, the loss of gas in the center of the galaxy could prevent formation there, according to Roberts.

While ram pressure stripping is the best explanation for the new observations, there may be other possible reasons that the galaxy looks the way it does, and they can't yet be ruled out.

The jelly's appendages could be an illusion; parts of the image that show the tentacles were taken using a method that creates blurring, introducing some uncertainty, Roberts said.

Next steps

With the limited existing data about jellyfish galaxies, it's not clear to astronomers whether a jellyfish galaxy so far out in space is rare or not.

"We don't know the answer yet, but the more galaxies like this that are discovered the more clues that we get," Roberts said.

The research team is hoping to sharpen their image by gathering data from other telescopes, which would allow them to determine whether or not what they've observed is indeed a jellyfish galaxy.

MTG-S1 and Sentinel-4 launch to change how we see our atmosphere

The second of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites and the first instrument for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission lifted off at 23:04 CEST on Tuesday, 1 July.

The satellite is now on its way to monitor Earth’s atmosphere from an altitude of 36 000 km. From this geostationary orbit, the missions can provide game-changing data for forecasting severe storms and air pollution over Europe.

Both MTG and Copernicus Sentinel-4 are world-class Earth observation missions developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with European partners to address scientific and societal challenges.

The MTG-S1 satellite has been designed to generate a completely new type of data product, especially suited to nowcasting rapidly evolving storms, with three-dimensional views of the atmosphere.

Its Infrared Sounder will be the first European hyperspectral sounding instrument in geostationary orbit, allowing it to hover over Europe and provide:

a profile of temperature and moisture at different altitudes over Europe every 30 minutes; and

data on aerosols, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide over Europe and Africa every 60 minutes.

And Copernicus Sentinel-4, which consists of an instrument mounted on the MTG-S1 satellite, will be the first mission to monitor European air quality from geostationary orbit.

Its fixed position over the equator enables it to keep its ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared (UVN) imaging spectrometer focused on Europe and northern Africa. It will measure:

pollution every 60 minutes with a level of detail and precision that will transform how we predict air quality across Europe.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, said, “These two groundbreaking missions are set to change the way we forecast both severe weather and the quality of air over Europe.

It is thanks to the outstanding work our teams have done with Eumetsat, the European Commission and dozens of European industry partners, that we are able to now look forward to more accurate and timely ways of predicting storm events and air pollution.”

Phil Evans, Director General of Eumetsat, said, “MTG-S1 will provide entirely new types of data products that will support specialists across Eumetsat member states to detect signs of atmospheric instability even before clouds begin to form.

Combined with data from the MTG imaging satellites it will, for the first time, offer a space-based view of the full lifecycle of convective storms.

This will provide tremendous support to national meteorological services in carrying out their vital work, helping to save lives, reduce disruption, and strengthen resilience.”

MTG-S1 and Copernicus Sentinel-4 were launched on Tuesday, 1 July, by SpaceX on a Falcon 9 rocket, from Cape Canaveral in Florida, US. Lift off was at 23:04 CEST (17:04 local time).

Acquisition of signal was confirmed at 23:39 CEST, followed by deployment of the satellite’s solar arrays, indicating that the mission now has sufficient power. This is a key point at which the mission teams recognise the success of the launch.

Menstrual cups tested in space flight conditions for the first time

Scientists have launched menstrual cups into space for the first time, testing whether these reusable devices can withstand the extreme conditions of space travel.

The AstroCup mission represents a key step toward giving female astronauts sustainable menstrual health options during long-duration missions to the moon and Mars.

Since Sally Ride's historic space shuttle flight in 1983, when NASA famously asked if 100 tampons would be enough for a week-long mission, managing menstruation in space has been an ongoing challenge.

Currently, most female astronauts use hormonal contraception to suppress menstruation entirely during missions.

While this approach has practical advantages, it's not suitable for everyone and raises health concerns for extremely long missions as we step further out into the solar system.

With ambitious plans for lunar bases and Mars expeditions that could last years or even decades, researchers recognized the urgent need for sustainable alternatives.

An astronaut participating in multiple Artemis missions, for example, could face over a decade of menstrual suppression, while someone involved in the full program from 2025 to 2035 might require nearly 20 years of hormonal treatment.

The AstroCup team, led by Ligia F. Coelho from Cornell University, launched four commercially available menstrual cups aboard the Baltasar rocket during a European competition in October 2022, with two cups flying into space while two remained on the ground as controls. The rocket reached over 3 kilometers altitude during a 9-minute flight that subjected the cups to forces 16 times greater than Earth's gravity.

Before and after the flight, researchers conducted rigorous testing using water and glycerol to evaluate the cups' structural integrity and leak-proof performance.

The space-flown menstrual cups performed flawlessly.

Visual inspections revealed no signs of wear or tear but, more importantly, the cups showed no leakage of either test liquid, maintaining their seal integrity despite experiencing extreme acceleration forces, temperature changes, and pressure variations during flight.

The payload's onboard sensors recorded challenging conditions throughout the journey with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 34°C, humidity dropping to 40%, and atmospheric pressure falling below 70,000 Pascals at peak altitude.

These results, posted to the arXiv preprint server, suggest that menstrual cups could be a viable solution for managing menstruation during space missions.

Unlike disposable tampons or pads, reusable cups would dramatically reduce waste, a critical consideration in space where every gram matters and disposal options are limited.

Beyond practical benefits, this research addresses astronaut autonomy and choice in health care.

While encouraging, the AstroCup experiment was just a first step. The test occurred in Earth's atmosphere and gravity, while the moon has one-sixth Earth's gravity and Mars has one-third.

These different gravitational conditions could affect how menstrual fluid behaves when cups are removed or repositioned.

Future studies must examine how the devices perform across multiple menstrual cycles, including cleaning and storage procedures in the environment of space.

The AstroCup mission proves that testing women's health technologies for space is both feasible and necessary.

With more women joining space programs around the world and missions growing longer, ensuring that female astronauts have safe, effective menstrual management options isn't just a technical challenge, it's a fundamental requirement for the future of human space exploration.

White House works to ground NASA science missions before Congress can act

In another sign that the Trump White House is aggressively moving to slash NASA’s science programs, dozens of mission leaders have been asked to prepare "closeout" plans by the end of next week.

The new directive came from NASA's senior leadership on Monday, which is acting on behalf of the White House Office of Management and Budget. Copies of these memos, which appear to vary a little by department, were reviewed by Ars.

The detailed closeout plans called for must be prepared by as soon as July 9 for some missions, which has left principal investigators scrambling due to the tight deadline and the July 4 holiday weekend.

Projects should prepare their plans assuming closeout direction is given on October 1, 2025, one of the NASA memos states.

Missions in operations—that is to say, spacecraft whizzing around the Solar System conducting science right now—should "assume closeout is complete within 3 months."

The memos are careful to state that the preparation of these closeout plans is for the purposes of a "planning exercise only."

However, multiple scientists familiar with the new directive from NASA's leadership do not believe these closeout plans are merely for planning purposes.

Instead, based on the budget process to date and statements from the White House, they view the memos as an effort by the Trump administration to move forward with canceling as many NASA science missions as possible before Congress passes a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, 2026.

This fiscal year begins on October 1, three months from today.

Science at risk

The Trump White House released its proposed budget for NASA a little more than a month ago, seeking to reduce NASA's budget by about 24 percent, from $24.8 billion this year to $18.8 billion in fiscal year 2026.

Some areas within the budget were hit harder than others, particularly the Science Mission Directorate, which sustained nearly 50 percent in proposed cuts.

The space agency has 124 science missions in development, prime operations, or extended operations.

Effectively, the proposed cuts would cancel 41 of these missions, and another 17 would see their funding zeroed out in the near future.

Nearly half of NASA's science missions would therefore end, and dozens more would receive budget cuts of 20–40 percent.

This includes some high-profile casualties, including NASA's only mission at Jupiter, an effort to explore an asteroid that will fly extremely close to Earth in 2029, two promising missions to Venus, and an effort to return samples from Mars.

"We would be turning off some fabulous missions that are doing extremely well," said Jim Green, a physicist who led NASA's Planetary Science Program for 12 years before his retirement in 2022.

Normally, after the White House proposes a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, it is considered by appropriators in Congress responsible for setting funding levels and publishing a budget.

However, in recent years, Congress has been unable to agree upon a budget and pass it before the beginning of the next fiscal year.

This has led to a "continuing resolution" in which, generally, NASA missions continue to receive funding consistent with budget levels set during the previous fiscal year.

However, multiple sources indicated to Ars that may not happen this year, and the new memos offer an important clue in this regard.

Making missions go dark

The memos were sent to the principal investigators of the missions that the White House budget seeks to cancel.

On one hand, it is prudent to have a plan of action in place should these missions actually be canceled due to a new budget, assuming one is in place by October 1.

It is NASA's job to execute the budget it is given.

But there very likely is a more cynical plan at play here.

The Office of Management and Budget, led by Russ Vought, has been seeking to cut the US government's science portfolio across the board, and it fully expects a continuing resolution to be adopted as Congress almost certainly won't have a budget signed.

Astronomers capture incredible 1st image of a dead star that exploded twice. How did it happen?

You may only live once, but some stars die twice. Astronomers have now discovered the first visual evidence of such a stellar event, a dead star that underwent a so-called "double-detonation."

This could indicate that some stars could go supernova without reaching the so-called Chandrasekhar limit, the minimum mass that a star needs to go supernova.

Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and its Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, the team zoomed in on the centuries-old remains of supernova SNR 0509-67.5 located 60,000 light-years away in the constellation Dorado.

This investigation revealed structures within this explosive wreckage that indicate its progenitor star exploded not once but twice.

Said star was a white dwarf, the type of stellar remnant that forms when a star with a mass similar to that of the sun runs out of fuel for nuclear fusion.

The types of supernova explosions that white dwarfs undergo, Type Ia supernovas, are important to astronomers because they can be used to measure cosmic distances because their light output is so uniform.

Thus, astronomers often refer to them as "standard candles."

The first visual evidence of a double detonation white dwarf reveals hidden depths to these important stellar events, scientists say.

"The explosions of white dwarfs play a crucial role in astronomy," team leader and University of New South Wales researcher Priyam Das said in a statement.

"Yet, despite their importance, the long-standing puzzle of the exact mechanism triggering their explosion remains unsolved."

You only die twice

Scientists agree that the genesis of Type Ia supernovas is binary systems of two stars in which one becomes a white dwarf.

If this dead star orbits close enough to its living stellar companion, or if that companion swells up, then the white dwarf becomes a stellar vampire, greedily stripping material from its companion or "donor" star.

This continues until the piling up stolen material has added so much mass to the white dwarf that the stellar remnant crosses the so-called Chandrasekhar limit, which is about 1.4 times the mass of the sun.

Hence, this cosmic vampire white dwarf explodes in a Type Ia supernova. It is believed that in most cases, the eruption completely destroys the white dwarf. But for some time, astronomers have suspected there may be more to the story.

Maybe white dwarfs can experience a second explosion. This research confirms that at least some white dwarfs experience double-detonations.

The question is: why?

Theory behind double-detonations suggests that in these cases, as white dwarfs are stripping material from a donor star, they wrap themselves in a blanket of stolen helium. This envelope becomes unstable and eventually ignites, triggering the first detonation.

The initial explosion generates a shockwave that ripples inwards, eventually striking the core of the white dwarf, triggering a second detonation, the actual supernova.

The significance of this to our understanding of Type Ia white dwarf supernovas is that it can occur well before a dead star swells beyond the Chandrasekhar limit.

Recently, scientists determined that this double-detonation process would imprint a distinctive "fingerprint" with supernova wreckage. This should be present long after the supernova ripped its progenitor star apart.

That fingerprint is now visually confirmed as being present in the wreckage of SNR 0509-67.5, supernova wreckage in the Large Magellanic Cloud first detected in 2004 and believed to be around 400 years old as we see it.

Beyond being an important discovery for our scientific understanding of these events and solving a lingering mystery about the evolution of white dwarfs, the observation of SNR 0509-67.5 has provided astronomy lovers with some stunning eye-candy.

"This tangible evidence of a double-detonation not only contributes towards solving a long-standing mystery, but also offers a visual spectacle," Das concluded.

Exoplanets that cling too tightly to their stars trigger their own doom: 'This is a completely new phenomenon'

Some planets take the expression "you're your own worst enemy" to the extreme. At least, that's what astronomers found when they recently discovered a doomed planet clinging to its parent star so tightly that it's triggering explosive outbursts and destroying itself.

The clingy, self-destructive extrasolar planet, or "exoplanet," in question is called HIP 67522 b. It orbits a young, 17 million-year-old star so closely that one of its years lasts just one Earth week.

Considering our middle-aged star, the sun, is 4.6 billion years old, the stellar parent of this clingy exoplanet (called HIP 67522) is a relative infant. This means it is bursting with energy.

Since the mid-1990s, when the first exoplanets were discovered, astronomers have pondered whether exoplanets can orbit their stars closely enough that stellar magnetic fields are impacted.

Over 5,000 exoplanet discoveries later and astronomers still hadn't found the answer.

That is, until now.

"We hadn't seen any systems like HIP 67522 before; when the planet was found, it was the youngest planet known to be orbiting its host star in less than 10 days," team leader and Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) researcher Ekaterina Ilin said in a statement.

"I have a million questions because this is a completely new phenomenon, so the details are still not clear."

Kid planet triggers stellar parent

The team discovered HIP 67522 while using NASA's exoplanet hunting spacecraft TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) to survey flaring stars.

TESS discovered some interesting characteristics of HIP 67522, prompting a follow-up investigation with the European Space Agency (ESA) mission Cheops (Characterizing Exoplanet Satellite).

"We quickly requested observing time with Cheops, which can target individual stars on demand, ultra precisely," Ilin said.

"With Cheops, we saw more flares, taking the total count to 15, almost all coming in our direction as the planet transited in front of the star as seen from Earth."

Ilin and colleagues discovered that the stellar flares being thrown out by HIP 67522 occur when its clingy planet passes in front of, or "transits," the star.

That means these flares are very likely triggered by the planet itself. The team theorizes this occurs because HIP 67522 b is so close to its star that it exerts a magnetic influence on the star.

As the planet whips around the star, it gathers energy, which is redirected as waves rippling down the star's magnetic field lines. When a wave hits the stellar surface, a massive flare is triggered.

"The planet seems to be triggering particularly energetic flares," Ilin explained. "The waves it sends along the star’s magnetic field lines kick off flares at specific moments. But the energy of the flares is much higher than the energy of the waves.

"We think that the waves are setting off explosions that are waiting to happen."

This is therefore the first hard evidence that planets can influence the behavior of their stars.

HIP 67522 b isn't just triggering flares facing nowhere, though. These induced flares are directed toward the world itself. In particular, it is bombarded with around six times the radiation a planet at this orbital distance usually would experience.

As you might imagine, this bombardment spells doom for HIP 67522 b. The planet is currently around the size of Jupiter, but it has around the density of candy floss.

The planet's wispy outer layers are being stripped away by harsh radiation, causing the planet to lose even the little mass it has.

Over the next 100 million years, HIP 67522 b is expected to drop from the size of Jupiter to around the size of Neptune. The team doesn't actually quite know how extreme the damage these self-inflicted flares could be for HIP 67522 b.

"There are two things that I think are most important to do now.

The first is to follow up in different wavelengths to find out what kind of energy is being released in these flares — for example, ultraviolet and X-rays are especially bad news for the exoplanet," Ilin said.

"The second is to find and study other similar star-planet systems; by moving from a single case to a group of 10 to 100 systems, theoretical astronomers will have something to work with."

An enormous 'X' and 'V' will grace the moon's surface tonight. Here's how to see them

The night of the first quarter moon phase on July 2 presents a good opportunity to spot a colossal 'X' and 'V' emblazoned on the lunar surface.

This month's first quarter phase occurs at 11:41 p.m. EDT on July 2 (0341 GMT on July 3), at which time the right side of the half-lit lunar disk will be illuminated by direct sunlight from the perspective of viewers in the northern hemisphere on Earth.

At this time, the sun shines at such an angle to make it appear as if there is a gigantic 'V' and 'X' marking the barren lunar surface.

This kind of phenomenon is referred to as a 'clair-obscur' effect and occurs when the interplay between light and shadow leads to the chance formation of familiar shapes on the moon's craggy terrain.

How to spot the letters 'X' and 'V' marking the lunar surface

The lunar letters are visible for roughly four hours in the run-up to each first quarter moon phase and are at their most impressive when seen just on the 'night' side of the terminator, with their upper reaches kissed by the sun's light.

If you miss the letters on the night side of the terminator, there's no need to lose hope, as they'll continue to be visible for a brief period after they pass to the 'day side' of the moon.

The lunar X is an optical effect formed when sunlight strikes elevated rim sections of the Bianchini, Purbach and La Caille Craters around the first quarter moon phase, according to stargazing website EarthSky.org.

The feature can be found around 25 degrees south of the lunar equator close to the terminator, which is the line separating the dayside and nightside of the moon, close to the prominent Werner and Aliacensis Craters.

To find the lunar 'V', moongazers must follow the line of the terminator up to a point less than 10 degrees above the lunar equator to find the partially shadowed form of the Ukert Crater.

Both objects can be spotted through a small backyard telescope with a 6-inch aperture, though a larger scope will help resolve detail in the myriad craters and broken terrain dotting the surrounding moonscapes.

Senate Passes Reconciliation Bill with Billions for Air Force and Space Force

The Senate passed Republicans’ sweeping tax-and-spending package July 1 in a 51-50 vote, the culmination of a 27-hour marathon legislative session.

The package—often called the reconciliation bill—includes a $150 billion package of defense funds that accounts for a significant portion of the money the Air Force and Space Force want for their top priorities next year.

The bill now returns to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

“The Senate-passed reconciliation bill is an investment in the future of the United States,” Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said on social media after the vote.

“Through this legislation, the Senate secured a down payment on a generational upgrade for our nation’s defense capabilities.”

The bill is essentially must-pass legislation for the Department of the Air Force, which stands to lose tens of billions of dollars from its annual budget if the measure fails to become law.

Nearly $39 billion—or 15.5 percent—of the $250 billion the Air Force and Space Force seek in 2026 would come from the reconciliation bill.

While the defense provisions in the bill aren’t controversial, their fate is tied to the outcome of the more divisive overall package, which includes cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and trillions of dollars for tax breaks, immigration enforcement, and more.

If the legislation isn’t enacted, the services would face a budget cut of almost 1 percent compared to the previous year. That possibility would be a “massive blow to our plan,” Air Force Secretary Troy E. Meink told the Senate defense appropriations subcommittee last week.

“It’s highly risky, because there is no guarantee that there’ll be another reconciliation bill,” Todd Harrison, a defense budget analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“The fact that the Air Force and Space Force did not do well in their base budgets is a troubling sign.”

The Space Force would be hit particularly hard. More than one-third of its $40 billion spending proposal would be funded through the reconciliation bill, putting the service in a precarious position as it watches the legislation’s progress.

Nearly half of the Space Force’s $29 billion research, development, test, and evaluation request depends on the reconciliation bill—a massive gamble for the service as it tries to take on more missions in its sixth year.

Some of that is comprised of the Trump administration’s attempt to secure a $25 billion “down payment” for its Golden Dome missile defense system that would heavily rely on Space Force assets to protect the U.S. from attack.

The Space Force’s spending plan indicates it “lost big” to the other services as Pentagon leaders crafted the 2026 base budget request, Harrison said, despite the military’s growing reliance on space for directing precision-guided weapons, surveillance, and communications.

“That money is going to go away,” he said of the boost through reconciliation. “What are they left with?” Twelve percent of next year’s Air Force budget relies on reconciliation dollars as well.

While the money can give programs like the B-21 stealth bomber a temporary bump, Harrison believes it won’t accomplish much in the long run.

Reconciliation is one piece of the Trump administration’s $1 trillion defense spending request for 2026, which it has split between the one-time megabill and the regular annual appropriations process in the hope of making it more likely to succeed.

“I don’t fully understand all of the mechanisms, but I think the first principle is … a sustained topline to be able to continue our modernization and maintain readiness is going to be key, however that happens,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin said of the two-track approach at the June 26 Senate defense appropriations hearing.

Centene, one of the largest health insurers in the U.S., crashed in early trading in New York after withdrawing its 2025 guidance, citing new data from an independent actuarial firm that revealed weaker-than-expected trends in its Affordable Care Act marketplaces and mounting Medicaid costs.
