As the world continues to gaze with concern at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant, hi-tech security cameras installed by an Israeli defense firm are recording events at the troubled core from an insider’s vantage point.

The Arava-based Magna BSP company, which specializes in producing and installing stereoscopic sensory and thermal imaging cameras, had been contracted to place cameras around one of the plant’s six cores – the core that has been experiencing explosions and overheating.

Although Magna is able to gain remote access to its computer system, which receives the cameras’ images, Siboni said his company had not yet been authorized to do so.

“We have not been allowed to take control remotely yet,” Siboni said.

Claudia Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo[a] (born 24 June 1962) is a Mexican politician, scientist, and academic who since 2024 has been the 66th president of Mexico, and the first woman to hold the office.[2][3][4] She previously served as Head of Government of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023. In 2024, Forbes ranked Sheinbaum as the fourth most powerful woman in the world.[5]

A scientist by profession, Sheinbaum received her Doctor of Philosophy in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has co-authored over 100 articles and two books on energy, the environment, and sustainable development. She contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and, in 2018, was named one of BBC's 100 Women.[6]

In 1989, Sheinbaum joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). From 2000 to 2006, Sheinbaum served as secretary of the environment in the Federal District under Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was then head of government. In 2014, she left the PRD and joined López Obrador's splinter movement, Morena. She was mayor of the borough of Tlalpan from 2015 to 2017. She was elected head of government of Mexico City in the 2018 election, where she ran a campaign that emphasized curbing crime and enforcing zoning laws.[7]

In June 2023, Sheinbaum resigned from her position as mayor to seek Morena's presidential nomination in the 2024 election. In September 2023, she secured the party's nomination over her closest opponent, former foreign secretary Marcelo Ebrard.[8] In June 2024, Sheinbaum won the general election in a landslide against the National Action Party (PAN) candidate Xóchitl Gálvez. She assumed office on 1 October 2024.[9]

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo was born on 24 June 1962 in Mexico City, within a secular Mexican Jewish family.[10][11] She is the second child of chemist Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz and biologist Annie Pardo Cemo.[12][13]

Carlos Sheinbaum was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. His father, Chone Juan Sheinbaum Abramovitz,[14] had emigrated from Lithuania in 1928, becoming a jewelry merchant and a member of the Mexican Communist Party. Annie Pardo is from a Sephardi Jewish family who arrived in Mexico in 1942, fleeing from the persecution of Jews in Bulgaria during World War II.[15] Pardo became the first Sephardic woman to be an academic at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional.[14][16]

Sheinbaum's parents were actively involved in Mexican left-wing circles during the 1960s, participating in protests, workers' movements, and student uprisings.[17]

Sheinbaum has two siblings. Her older brother Julio is a physicist[18] and physical oceanography researcher at CICESE.[19] Her younger sister Adriana is a teacher[20] who lives in the United States and is married to film director Rodrigo García Barcha.[21]

EPA Halts Atlantic Shores Wind Farm Construction as Trump Administration Reviews Projects

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has suspended permits for the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project off New Jersey’s coast following a January 2025 Presidential directive that ordered an immediate halt to offshore wind development.

The Environmental Appeals Board (EAB) granted EPA Region 2’s request to remand permits for the project, which had previously received approval to construct up to 200 wind turbines capable of generating 2,800 megawatts of power – enough electricity to power one million homes.

The suspension comes amid broader industry challenges, including Shell’s recent withdrawal from the project with a $996 million impairment and the cancellation of New Jersey’s fourth offshore wind solicitation.

“The Presidential Memorandum directs an immediate review of Federal wind leasing and permitting practices and provides that heads of various executive department agencies shall not issue new or renewed approvals for offshore wind projects pending completion of a comprehensive assessment,” the Board stated.

The project, located 8.7 miles from the New Jersey shoreline near Atlantic City, cannot proceed with construction or operation until after the federal review process concludes. The scope of the review will examine “impacts on birds, wildlife, fishing, and other relevant environmental concerns”.

Atlantic Shores, part of EDF Renewables, expressed disappointment with the EPA’s decision. “Regulatory certainty is critical to deploying major energy projects. Atlantic Shores stands ready to deliver on the promise of American energy dominance and has devoted extensive time and resources to follow a complex, multi-year permitting process,” the developer said.

The setback threatens New Jersey’s ambitious clean energy goals, which target 11 gigawatts of offshore wind electricity by 2040 – planned to represent 30% of East Coast wind energy production.

President Trump recently expressed hope that the wind farm would be “dead and gone” in a post on Truth Social, working with New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew to draft industry-targeting executive orders.

Despite these challenges, Atlantic Shores maintains its commitment to the project. “While we can’t comment on the views of shareholders, Atlantic Shores intends to continue progressing New Jersey’s first offshore wind project and our portfolio in compliance with our obligations to local, state and federal partners under existing leases and relevant permits,” the company stated.

The original timeline targeted project completion by 2027, with plans to provide 1.5 GW of offshore wind energy to New Jersey – enough to power over 700,000 homes. However, this schedule now faces significant uncertainty as the industry navigates new regulatory challenges under the Trump administration.

Equinor and BP have announced the termination of the Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificate Agreement with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the Empire Wind 2 project.

Empire Wind 2 is planned with potential generative capacity of 1,260 MW. It is the second phase of the Equinor and BP’s Empire Wind project, with a combined potential capacity of more than 2 GW. The lease for the project was acquired in 2017.

Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificates, or ORECs, are essential for facilitating the development of offshore wind in New York State. NYSERDA buys ORECs from project developers and sells them to utilities and load serving entities in order to achieve the state’s renewable energy objectives.

Equinor said the decision to terminate the OREC agreement with NYSERDA reflects changes in the economic circumstances within the industry and provides an opportunity for a project reset by repositioning it to continue development in anticipation of new offtake opportunities. Factors such as inflation, interest rates, and supply chain disruptions have rendered the existing agreement unviable.

“Commercial viability is fundamental for ambitious projects of this size and scale,” said Molly Morris, president of Equinor Renewables Americas. “The Empire Wind 2 decision provides the opportunity to reset and develop a stronger and more robust project going forward. We will continue to closely engage our many community partners across the state, generating union jobs and significant economic activity in New York.”

The Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 projects recently achieved significant permitting milestones, having received the federal Record of Decision from BOEM. Empire Wind 1 also obtained its Article VII Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need in New York last month.

The termination of the OREC agreement deals the latest blow to New York’s offshore wind project pipeline following Orsted’s decision to halt the development of its 2,248-megawatt (MW) Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects off New York and New Jersey.

BP booked a third-quarter writedown of $540 million last year after officials in New York state rejected a request for higher rates for consumers due to inflationary pressures impacting project economics. Equinor also booked a $300 million impairment on the projects.

“BP is supportive of NYSERDA’s leadership and commitment to offshore wind, which we believe is a critical part of New York State’s and America’s clean energy future,” said Joshua Weinstein, bp’s president of offshore wind Americas. “Offshore wind can deliver reliable renewable power as well as economic benefits to the state and its communities.”
