Long-term contracts with Vermont

Hydro-Québec is connected to the Vermont grid via an approximately 24-km (15-mile), 120-kV transmission line that runs from Bedford substation in Québec’s Montérégie region to Highgate substation in the northwest corner of Vermont. The interconnection also includes a back-to-back converter station to synchronize Hydro-Québec’s energy deliveries with the New England grid. With a maximum capacity of 225 MW, the interconnection was commissioned in 1985, enabling Hydro-Québec to supply Vermont utilities under long-term agreements.

The first long-term contract between Hydro-Québec and Vermont was signed in 1987. In 2010, the parties signed a second contract for up to 225 MW, under which Hydro-Québec committed to deliver approximately 1.3 TWh of energy each year through 2038—a volume equivalent to about 25% of Vermont’s annual electricity needs.

Designed to stabilize prices, these long-term contracts are part of the reason why Vermont consumers have not experienced the sharp rate increases that have occurred in other parts of New England in recent years.

Couple embezzled $5 million from Southern California company, police say

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – A previously married Orange County couple was arrested over the weekend for embezzling nearly $5 million from a local company, authorities said.

In an investigation that began three years ago, according to officials at the Irvine Police Department, 41-year-old Gurpreet Kaur Lakhiani, a company controller, and her then husband, 40-year-old Deepak Lakhiani, stole millions of dollars from an Irvine company.

The couple reportedly embezzled the funds between 2012 and 2021 and is suspected of using the money to fund a lavish lifestyle, using the money to buy luxury vehicles, jewelry real estate and travel.

“The loss was so significant that the business had to close, leaving many people unemployed,” Irvine police said.

Police in riot gear face-off with protesters in downtown Los Angeles

The pair were taken into custody and booked at the Orange County Jail on $4.4 million warrants for charges that included embezzlement, grand theft, money laundering and receiving stolen property.

Investigators did not provide any details on how the couple stole the funds, nor did they name the former company that fell victim to the theft.

Alicia Keys appeared to call out President Donald Trump’s efforts to nix diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as she accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 2025 Grammys ceremony on Sunday.

“DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift,” the musician said at one point during her acceptance speech, prompting applause from the audience.

“This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices,” urged Keys.

The Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Instead of passing a new Constitutional amendment to change the Fourteenth Amendment to stop automatic citizenship of babies on US soil, even if the parents are not citizens and they are in the US illegally, Trump aims to reinterpret a clause in the amendment to no longer apply to large numbers of people that it used to.

A coalition of 18 states sued Trump and federal agencies in US District Court in Massachusetts, claiming the order violates the Constitution. Immigrant and civil rights advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union, also filed a lawsuit.

Last week, President Trump signed an executive order that prohibits federal funding of K-12 schools that promote critical race theory or radical gender ideology. Trump criticized indoctrination that forced children to adopt identities as oppressors and victims based on skin color. He also condemned gender indoctrination that erodes critical thinking and sows division, confusion, and distrust. He signed another executive order that prohibits federal funding and support for irreversible child gender transition “mutilation.”

Zelensky failing to get Trump’s ear – ex-Ukrainian president

Kiev previously warned the US not to discuss the conflict with Russia without giving it a seat at the table

Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has criticized Vladimir Zelensky’s alleged lack of effective communication with the administration of US President Donald Trump following the Republican’s return to the White House.

In a video statement on his Facebook page on Sunday, Poroshenko expressed concern over what hedescribed as the Ukrainian leader’s failure to “establish an effective channel of communication” with Trump’s White House in the two weekssince the US president’s inauguration. The comments were part of a broader report detailing Poroshenko’s recent meetings with EU officials and the positive outcomes they supposedly produced. The former president added that his team plans to travel to Washington to continue the diplomatic outreach. (Poroshenko has no influence on Trump, he just wants to be elected. Zelensky has been a pain and ordering Trump on who he talks to is insane. Z is filled with false power by the EU telling him how to handle Trump, that none of them have done. Anyone related to Ukraine is suspicious. Plus Trump has heard what Putin explained. The arrogance of Ukraine leaders is disrespectful of Trump. Trump made it clear, he trusts no one. Plus Macron pushing Z on Trump on the opening of Notre Dam, obviously didn't work.)

Poroshenko offered no proof of poor communication between Kiev and Washington, but some circumstantial evidence supports his assertion. Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, has alleged that Zelensky sought an invitation to Trump’s inauguration but was rejected away multiple times.

In an interview with the Associated Press last week, Zelensky claimed that direct US-Russia talks without Kiev’s oversight would be “dangerous for everyone.” Poroshenko’s messaging mirrors Zelensky’s. In his statement on Sunday,he took credit for the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” On the same day, Trump said he has upcoming talks planned with both Ukraine and Russia, remarking that “those discussions are actually going pretty well.”

Last week, Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, called on Kiev to lift its ban on national elections, stating that “most democratic nations have elections in their time of war.” Zelensky suspended voting under martial law, but refused to transfer presidential authority to the speaker of the parliament, as the Ukrainian Constitution requires.

Political maneuvering in Ukraine is heating up, with senior figures increasingly challenging Zelensky. Last week, Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko accused the central government of attempting to “destroy local governance” with its power plays. A former boxing champion, Klitschko co-led the 2014 Western-backed protests that resulted in an armed coup and the toppling of Ukraine’s democratically elected government.

Moscow has expressed cautious optimism about Trump’s stated goals regarding the Ukraine conflict, but says it seeks an enduring resolution and not a freeze of the conflict. Since Zelensky’s term as president expired last year, Russia has questioned his authority to sign any international treaties.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than half the people outside the government who met with Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state gave money — either personally or through companies or groups — to the Clinton Foundation. It’s an extraordinary proportion indicating her possible ethics challenges if elected president.

At least 85 of 154 people from private interests who met or had phone conversations scheduled with Clinton while she led the State Department donated to her family charity or pledged commitments to its international programs, according to a review of State Department calendars released so far to The Associated Press. Combined, the 85 donors contributed as much as $156 million. At least 40 donated more than $100,000 each, and 20 gave more than $1 million.

Among those granted time with Clinton included an internationally known economist who asked for her help as the Bangladesh government pressured him to resign from a nonprofit bank he ran; a Wall Street executive who sought Clinton’s help with a visa problem; and Estee Lauder executives who were listed as meeting with Clinton while her department worked with the firm’s corporate charity to counter gender-based violence in South Africa.

Wednesday evening, Clinton said the AP had only “looked at a small portion of my time” as secretary of state and had drawn the conclusion that her meetings with Nobel laureates — such as Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel — were connected to the foundation rather than their work as global leaders.

“That is absurd,” she told CNN. She described the story as “all smoke, no fire.”

The meetings between the Democratic presidential nominee and foundation donors do not appear to violate legal agreements Clinton and former president Bill Clinton signed before she joined the State Department in 2009. But the frequency of the overlaps shows the intermingling of access and donations, and fuels perceptions that giving the foundation money was a price of admission for face time with Clinton. Her calendars and emails released as recently as this week describe scores of contacts she and her top aides had with foundation donors.

The AP’s findings represent the first systematic effort to calculate the scope of the intersecting interests of Clinton Foundation donors and people who met personally with Clinton or spoke to her by phone about their needs.

The 154 did not include U.S. federal employees or foreign government representatives. Clinton met with representatives of at least 16 foreign governments that donated as much as $170 million to the Clinton charity, but they were not included in AP’s calculations because such meetings would presumably have been part of her diplomatic duties.

Clinton’s campaign said the AP analysis was flawed because it did not include in its calculations meetings with foreign diplomats or U.S. government officials, and the meetings AP examined covered only the first half of Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state. AP has sought for years a complete set of Clinton’s detailed schedules covering her time in office, which she could have voluntarily released but did not. The AP sued the State Department in federal court to obtain the schedules it has received so far.
