Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) did not buy or sell any stocks in his first 13 months as a congressman. That changed in March 2020, when he made half a dozen buys as the largest economic relief package in history was written and debated

Five of those purchases came in the three days between March 25 and 27, as the Senate and House voted on the CARES Act and former President Trump signed it into law.Crenshaw, who supported the bill, did not initially disclose the transactions, in violation of the STOCK Act, a law that requires members of Congress to tell the public when they engage in securities trades. Months later he amended his records to reflect the purchases.

The trades, which are listed only in a range of values, add up to a maximum of $120,000, and do not compare in size or volume to the kinds of headline-grabbing transactions executed ahead of the pandemic by Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. They only appeared in December, when Crenshaw amended his annual report, originally submitted in August.

“You’re referencing financial disclosures that use a range to report stock purchases, and you’re choosing the upper end of the range to come up with that $120,000 figure,” Justin Discigil, Crenshaw’s communications director, told the Daily Beast in an email. “The real number is around $30,000 at most,” Discigil said, and “in no way were his purchases unethical or related to official business.”

The timing, however, along with Crenshaw’s own trading history and connections to the industry, raises questions about why he made the purchases and failed, twice, to disclose them.

“Members of Congress should not be actively trading securities in the middle of a crisis. It shows that when the market crashes, that person is thinking about themselves and using the volatility to their own advantage,” said Ben Edwards, a securities law expert and professor at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Las Vegas Nevada. “We all have a limited amount of attention, and if you’ve got [an] eye on your stock portfolio, then you’re not giving that crisis or the American people the full attention they demand.”

Crenshaw, elected in 2018, had never traded individual stocks in office until that crisis struck, according to public records. Then, when global markets crashed on March 12, Crenshaw bought between $1,001 and $15,000 in Amazon. Two weeks later, while Congress voted on the CARES Act, Crenshaw bought stocks valued at the same price range in Southwest, Boeing, energy infrastructure manfacturer SPX, and Kinder Morgan, a Texas-based company specializing in pipeline construction. He also bought into an index fund tied to the performance of the S&P 500.

While it’s unclear why Crenshaw did not initially disclose the transactions, they came as an increasing number of high-profile lawmakers were getting snared in an insider-trading scandal. Except for the Amazon purchase, all of Crenshaw’s transactions came a week after ProPublica reported that Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) had sold up to $1.72 million on the heels of private coronavirus briefings. On March 20, The Daily Beast reported that Loeffler and her husband had sold off seven figures worth of stock following her first confidential briefings on the pandemic. Scrutiny soon fell on trades executed by Sens. David Perdue (R-GA), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and John Hoeven (R-ND), spurring investigations by the Justice Department, the Senate Ethics Committee and the Securities and Exchange Commission. None of the lawmakers faced criminal charges. Perdue and Loeffler lost their re-election bids to Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock in runoff elections this January.

Texas Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw fired back at Fox News anchor Jesse Watters for reporting his stock profits and claiming some lawmakers in Washington had “insider information.”

Watters pointed out that Crenshaw beat the stock market by 13 points, which was low on the list compared to other lawmakers and politicians in the chart. Crenshaw took to Instagram to fight back.

“Hey you fuing hack, if you’re gonna accuse me of literal corruption, get your facts straight and man up and accuse me to my face. You’re a fuing clown, desperate for clickbait,” Crenshaw wrote on his since-expired Instagram story. “I literally have $10,000 invested in stocks, and I haven’t made trades in over a year. I never have more than ~ $20k invested while in Congress.”

“Fox knows this but they’re desperate for fake controversy to get clicks. Watters is a tool, making millions to push conspiracies on tv, and bash veterans like me who are barely a fraction of his net worth,” Crenshaw continued. “Wake up America. The political entertainment industry is almost always lying to you.”

Watters’ report cited a report from the Unusual Whales Twitter account, which posted a chart titled Congress vs SPY in 2023, listing returns on current stocks held in each member’s portfolios and calculating YTD returns in a horizontal bar graph. Crenshaw falls in the lower third of the chart compared to Brian Higgins, Nancy Pelosi, Pete Sessions and more.

“A lot of them investing in companies they had inside information on,” Watters said. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is what corruption looks like. And that is why Congress still hasn’t passed a ban on insider stock trade.

Crenshaw also went straight for Watters, calling him “such a ‘conservative’ he cheated on his wife and then left her with twins while he went off with another Fox producer.”

The congressman and former Navy SEAL later called attention to an interview he had scheduled with Fox, connecting it to his words about the network and Watters.

“Guess I hurt their feelings by calling out their bullshit,” he wrote. “Oh well.”

A Fox News source told The Daily Beast that Crenshaw had not been booked to appear on the network but that he was previously scheduled to appear on a Fox Business show. The cancellation was not related to Crenshaw’s tirade, the source told the outlet.

Artemis Launch Team Successfully Test Upgraded Launch Software

Teams at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida successfully tested the launch control system, the software used to launch the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft for Artemis Moon missions.

The evaluations, which took place in the firing rooms of Kennedy’s Launch Control Center, included testing that software, audio, and imagery displays function well together, as well as practicing a launch pad-abort scenario.

Engineers with Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) Program divided the test into two parts: teams first ensured the software the Artemis launch team uses can handle multiple inputs at the same time.

Following software testing, teams performed a launch countdown simulation starting at T-minus 2 hours and 30 minutes until liftoff, which included testing the “abort switch,” a switch only the launch director and assistant launch director can flip in the event an abort at the launch pad is needed.

This marks the next set of integrated ground systems tests NASA completed to prepare for the Artemis II mission.

The Artemis II test flight will be NASA’s first mission with crew under the Artemis campaign, sending NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, on a 10-day journey around the Moon.

NASA tests trio of commercial lunar rovers

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced it played host to a trio of commercial lunar rovers at its Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The lunar terrain vehicles (LTV) tested came from Intuitive Machines in Houston, Lunar Outpost in Arvada, Colo., and Venturi Astrolab in Hawthorne, Calif.

NASA announced that each company provided the agency with a static mockup of their LTVs at the end of September, with the first round of testing being completed in December.

Tests took place in the agency's Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) test facility.

NASA engineers conducted tests where suited astronauts and engineers performed tasks, maneuvers, and emergency drills on the rovers.

These human-in-the-loop tests provided feedback on design functionality, controls, and safety. Astronauts evaluated the vehicles’ displays and interfaces, helping identify design improvements.

This feedback was shared with commercial developers to refine their rover designs based on real-world insights.

"We are excited to have mockups from all three LTV commercial providers here at Johnson Space Center," said Steve Munday, LTV project manager.

"This is the first major test milestone within the Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services contract and to have actual rovers delivered only four months after these companies were awarded is remarkable."

NASA astronauts and engineers tested two spacesuit prototypes - the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) and Axiom Space’s lunar spacesuit - during evaluations focused on crew interactions with Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) mockups.

Using NASA’s prototype suit, crew members were suspended in the ARGOS system to simulate the Moon's reduced gravity.

This setup allowed them to perform tasks such as handling lunar tools, deploying scientific instruments, and managing cargo as if they were on the lunar surface.

With Axiom Space’s pressurized suit, testing focused on the ease of mobility during rover entry and exit, assessing the crew compartment layout, and evaluating how well astronauts could operate display interfaces and controls while wearing thick gloves.

Emergency rescue scenarios were also tested, simulating the recovery of an incapacitated astronaut.

Each rover design is required to enable single-person rescue operations, ensuring compliance with NASA’s safety standards.

”We welcome them,” Putin said of the Ukrainian diaspora. “They are people of our culture, part of our people in essence.”

Millions of Ukrainians chose to flee to Russia when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated, or voted in referendums to break away from Kiev and ask Moscow to accept their regions under its sovereignty, Putin explained.

Five former Ukrainian regions have done so since the Western-backed armed coup in Kiev in 2014. Crimea joined Russia the same year and now constitutes two federal subjects: the city of Sevastopol and the Republic of Crimea. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson Region, and Zaporozhye Region became parts of Russia in late 2022. Kiev has refused to acknowledge their new status, which serves as one of the focal points of the current hostilities.

Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom today proclaimed a State of Emergency to streamline and expedite the state’s response to Avian influenza A (H5N1), commonly known as “Bird Flu.” This action comes as cases were detected in dairy cows on farms in Southern California, signaling the need to further expand monitoring and build on the coordinated statewide approach to contain and mitigate the spread of the virus. The virus has spread in 16 states among dairy cattle, following its first confirmed detection in Texas and Kansas in March 2024.

To date, no person-to-person spread of Bird Flu has been detected in California and nearly all infected individuals had exposure to infected cattle. California has already established the largest testing and monitoring system in the nation to respond to the outbreak.

This emergency proclamation will provide state and local agencies with additional flexibility around staffing, contracting, and other rules to support California’s evolving response.

“This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak. Building on California’s testing and monitoring system — the largest in the nation — we are committed to further protecting public health, supporting our agriculture industry, and ensuring that Californians have access to accurate, up-to-date information. While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus.”

Ongoing efforts to prevent spread and serious infection

California has mobilized a comprehensive cross-agency response to Bird Flu in dairy cattle and poultry farms to minimize farm worker exposures, reduce raw dairy product contamination, and mitigate the spread of the virus. The state has enlisted local, state, and federal government technical and operational expertise to support all facets of the response; worked to educate the public, health professionals, employers, and workers on prevention and control measures to reduce the risk of exposure to Bird Flu; provided comprehensive information for employers and workers on personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements; and distributed millions of pieces of PPE to high-risk workers at dairy farms.

Through coordinated public awareness efforts between the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), and other agencies, the state is leading a cross-agency response that includes timely public updates, multilingual outreach to dairy and poultry workers, targeted social media efforts to promote preventive practices, online and printed resources for the public, and media interviews to keep Californians informed. Additionally, the state is ensuring that agriculture workers have access to additional doses of seasonal flu vaccine from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce concurrent flu risks.

Officials have also been working in close collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and local health and agricultural officials, as part of a whole-of-government effort to coordinate, implement, and ensure timely surveillance and investigation of potential cases of Bird Flu.

Putin names conditions for talks with Zelensky

Any bilateral agreements would have to be signed with Ukraine’s legitimate authorities, the Russian president has stressed

Moscow is prepared to begin negotiations with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, provided he is legitimized through another presidential election, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at his annual end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Putin stressed that any future deals between Russia and Ukraine would have to be signed by thelegitimate authorities in Kiev, which currently means the Ukrainian parliament, the Rada, according to the president.

Putin explained that under the Ukrainian Constitution,there is no mechanism for extending the presidential term during martial lawand that only the Rada has the authority to prolong its term without holding elections during wartime.

He noted that given the president of Ukraine is responsible for appointing the heads of ministries, security services, and other regional and governmental bodies, the fact that Vladimir Zelensky’s term ran out earlier this yeareffectively means that all of these agency heads are illegitimate.

Nevertheless, Putin stated that Moscow remains open to talks with Kiev without any preconditions, except those that had already been agreed in Istanbul in 2022, which envisaged a neutral, non-aligned status for Ukraine, as well as certain restrictions on deploying foreign weaponry. He also noted that such talks would have to respect the realities on the ground that have developed since that time.

As for who Russia would be willing to negotiate with, Putin stated that as long as they obtain legitimacy through a public vote, Moscow will talk to anyone, even Vladimir Zelensky.

“Now, if Ukraine truly wants to go down the path of peaceful resolution, it can do so by organizing it inside the country however they want. But we can only sign agreements with those who are legitimate, and the only ones who are [now] legitimate are the Rada and the Rada chairman.”

Last month, Putin reiterated that the Ukrainian leadership has no legal right to give orders to the army or force people to die, arguing that thecurrent authorities in Kiev have effectively usurped power by bypassing elections.

Parliamentary and presidential elections in Ukraine, scheduled for October 2023 and March 2024, were canceled on the orders of Zelensky, who said that no polls would be held while martial law remains in force.

Zelensky’s presidential term officially expired in May but he has nevertheless remained in power. According to a recentpoll conductedby the Sociological Association of Ukraine,Zelensky would receive only 16% of the vote if an election was held today.

And any peace deal can be broken by Ukraine any time they want. This also means Zelensky is not the leader of the country and can't be working with Trump on a peace deal.)

NASA Payload Aims to Probe Moon’s Depths to Study Heat Flow

Earth’s nearest neighboring body in the solar system is its Moon, yet to date humans have physically explored just 5% of its surface.

It wasn’t until 2023 – building on Apollo-era data and more detailed studies made in 2011-2012 by NASA’s automated GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) mission – that researchers conclusively determined that the Moon has a liquid outer core surrounding a solid inner core.

As NASA and its industry partners plan for continued exploration of the Moon under Artemis in preparation for future long-duration missions to Mars, improving our understanding of Earth’s 4.5-billion-year-old Moon will help teams of researchers and astronauts find the safest ways to study and live and work on the lunar surface.

That improved understanding is the primary goal of a state-of-the-art science instrument called LISTER (Lunar Instrumentation for Subsurface Thermal Exploration with Rapidity), one of 10 NASA payloads flying aboard the next delivery for the agency’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and set to be carried to the surface by Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander.

Developed jointly by Texas Tech University in Lubbock and Honeybee Robotics of Altadena, California, LISTER will measure the flow of heat from the Moon’s interior.

Its sophisticated pneumatic drill will penetrate to a depth of three meters into the dusty lunar regolith. Every half-meter it descends, the drilling system will pause and extend a custom-built thermal probe into the lunar regolith.

LISTER will measure two different aspects of heat flow: thermal gradient, or the changes in temperature at various depths, and thermal conductivity, or the subsurface material’s ability to let heat pass through it.

“By making similar measurements at multiple locations on the lunar surface, we can reconstruct the thermal evolution of the Moon,” said Dr. Seiichi Nagihara, principal investigator for the mission and a geophysics professor at Texas Tech.

“That will permit scientists to retrace the geological processes that shaped the Moon from its start as a ball of molten rock, which gradually cooled off by releasing its internal heat into space.”

Demonstrating the drill’s effectiveness could lead to more innovative drilling capabilities, enabling future exploration of the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies..

The science collected by LISTER aims to contribute to our knowledge of lunar geology, improving our ability to establish a long-term presence on the Moon under the Artemis campaign.
