Trump says he wants to talk to Putin

The incoming US president has refused to comment on whether any contact with the Kremlin has already taken place

US President-elect Donald Trump has said that he will speak to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in a bid to stop the “carnage” between Moscow and Kiev.

During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday,Trump refused to comment when asked whether he had spoken to Putinsince he won last month’s presidential election. However, Trump said that he intends to do so.

“We’ll be talking to President Putinand we’ll be talking to the representatives, Zelensky and representatives from Ukraine,” he said. “We’ve got to stop it. It’s carnage,” he added, referring to the almost three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“It’s a carnage that we haven’t seen since the Second World War,” he continued. “It’s got to be stopped. And I’m doing my best to stop [it].”

Trump vowed on the campaign trail to end the conflict within a day of taking office, although he has since admitted that doing this may be “more difficult” than he previously thought. The incoming president met with Zelensky in Paris earlier this month, and said immediately after last month’s election that he will likely speak to Putin in the near future.

Trump and his prospective cabinet officials have refused to comment on media reports claiming that they have been in contact with Moscow, while the Kremlin last month denied a report by the Washington Post suggesting that Trump reached out to Putin by phone immediately after the election.

Putin has said that Trump’s statements on ending the conflict “deserve attention,” and that he is open to talks with the president-elect. “It wouldn’t be beneath me to call him myself,” the Russian president said at a meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi last month.

As Trump has not revealed any details on the kind of settlement he intends to propose to Putin and Zelensky, his plans have remained the subject of media speculation. Most American news outlets have predicted that Trump will push for the conflict to be frozen along the current line of contact, with Ukraine abandoning its aspirations of NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees from the West.

Trump has explicitly said that the US will leave the enforcement of such a deal up to NATO’s European members.

Moscow maintains that any settlement must begin with Ukraine ceasing military operations and acknowledging the “territorial reality” that it will never regain control of the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye, as well as Crimea. In addition, the Kremlin insists that the goals of its military operation – which include Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification – will be achieved.

The Ukrainian leader has claimed that a freeze would give Russia an opportunity to “attack” at a later date

Kiev will not “rush” into any agreements with Russia, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said. In an interview with French news outlet Le Parisien published on Wednesday,Zelensky declared his reluctance to make concessions, either territorial or in relation to Kiev's NATO and EU ambitions, to achieve peace.

Zelensky has previously insisted that the only viable path to peace with Russia was his ten-point ‘peace formula’, which includes a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from former Ukrainian territories and the restoration of the country’s 1991 borders. Widely touted by the West, the proposal was never taken seriously in Moscow.

However, Zelensky has signaled in recent weeks that he would be willing to relinquish territorial claims if Kiev becomes a NATO member. Recent media reports have also suggested that US President-elect Donald Trump, who met Zelensky in Paris earlier this month, could persuade the Ukrainian leader to ‘freeze’ the conflict along the current line of contact and enforce negotiations between Kiev and Moscow. Trump previously pledged to end the conflict within 24 hours upon returning to the White House in January next year.

“He really wants to move quickly [but] he is not yet in the White House and cannot have access to all the information. He also knows my firm desire to not rush to the detriment of Ukraine,”Zelensky stated.

“No matter how many presidents or prime ministers want to decree an end of the war, we are not going to simply give in and give up our independence,” he added. Zelensky claimed that freezing the conflict at its current stage would give Russia an opportunity to “attack” Ukraine at a later date.

“Putin is a boomerang: he comes back until he gets what he wants… If we do not stop Putin, he will continue to destroy us,” he stated. Zelensky said he would be ready to negotiate peace with Moscow only from “a position of strength,” and in order to get there, Ukraine must become part of the EU and NATO.

Zelensky rejected claims that he would acknowledge the loss of former Ukrainian territories that have joined Russia, namely the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Crimea.

“We cannot give up our territories. The Ukrainian Constitution forbids us to do so,” he stated, admitting, however, that Kiev does not currently have “the strength to regain” these territories.

Moscow has maintained that freezing the conflict unacceptable. It has repeatedly said it is open to negotiations and would welcome a diplomatic settlement, but insisted that this is only possible if Kiev ceased military operations, withdrew its forces from Russian territory, including former Ukrainian regions, ensured the rights of Russian-speaking residents, and became a neutral, nuclear-free state.

(Zelensky has made it very clear, he disrespects Trump and has no problem saying so. His arrogance and threats will be ended soon. He doesn’t have the power, all Trump needs to do, is to stop all funding for arms, they government, and any money going there. And then send Interpol to the accounts of Zelensky and all the thieves there, and seize them, and return them to the US for paying off part of the loans to them. In mind opinion, the only way to expose this farce and theft, is to arrest all oligarchs in the Ukraine Government once and for all. Zelensky underestimates Trump, and that’s a big mistake.)

Ukrainian currency hits all-time low against dollar

The grivna is expected to slide further in the coming weeks, local media say

Ukraine’s national currency, the grivna, dropped to 41.83 to the US dollar on Tuesday, according to data from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). The figure is a record low, multiple media outlets reported.

The devaluation of the Ukrainian currency could be a result of an easing of foreign currency controls by the regulator, noted online outlet Strana.ua.

The weakening of the grivna also follows a rejection by Kiev of a proposal to hold a ceasefire over Christmas, and the assassination of the head of Russia’s Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces in Moscow, which is believed to have been carried out by Ukraine. Moscow has accused Kiev of resorting to terrorist tactics due to its military failures.

Over the past year, the grivna has lost over 13% of its value. Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022,the currency has devalued by over 44%.

Previously, the exchange rate of the Ukrainian grivna reached a record low of 40.69 per $1 in mid-June. The fall followed the central bank’s decision to cut the key rate by 0.5 percentage points to 13%.

The Ukrainian currency is expected to fall further to 42.10 grivna to the dollar, the rate set in the state budget for the end of 2024, noted Strana.

“The government needs to make a lot of social payments at the end of the year, so it wants to get more grivnas for the dollars and euros it received from international partners,” the treasury director of one major Ukrainian bank told the publication.

The European Union has been providing billions of euro in financial support to Kiev through its Ukraine Facility. The United States has given at least $26.8 billion in budget support to the government of Ukraine since 2022.

Karas claimed that the November release of the video game ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl’, which was developed in Ukraine, has prepared the country for a nuclear war.The country will come through a nuclear crisis and make a leap forward in technology, producing artificial intelligence and advanced robots, Karas believes.

The remarks were part of his dismissal of Russia’s new hypersonic ballistic missile Oreshnik, which he called poorly-named and not really scary.

Russia demonstrated the Oreshnik’s capability in late November in response to Ukraine’s use of long-range Western-donated weapons for strikes deep inside its territory. It fired a non-nuclear version of the medium-range missile at a Soviet-built arms factory in the city of Dnepr, Ukraine.

A US-China relations expert fears has warned Americans to "plan for the worst" amid the ongoing New Jersey drone mystery – with reports about unexplained radiation spikes in the area.

According to the Geiger Counter World Map, which tracks radiation levels across the world, two areas in the New York metro area have been flagged as red. The areas are both said to be over the 200 counts-per-minute safety threshold. There are similar red flags further north near Connecticut.

It follows claims that the drones are hunting for a nuclear warhead that went "missing" during the Cold War.

He said that he drew parallels between the current drone “flap” and the 2023 “spy balloon” crisis – when a Chinese craft was spotted in US airspace.

In both cases, Chang saw “the apparent failure of the federal government – both the military and the president to protect the American people,” and he believes that China's leadership is now ready to go to war against America.

Chang says that recent vague reassurances made by the authorities have been of no help, and that it’s time to level with the public. He continued: “At this point we really need the president of the United States to actually address the American people and tell us what the federal government knows and what it doesn’t know.”

Chinese space defence expert Zhang Xiaoxin dies in car crash in Beijing

A top Chinese space expert who specialised in weather monitoring and early warning systems died in a car crash in Beijing on Sunday night aged 62.

Zhang Xiaoxin, a space expert who had long been involved in space weather research, was mourned in an obituary issued on Tuesday by the National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC), an affiliate of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), where he worked.

Zhang won a top award given by the Chinese military for science and tech progress, although little information is available about his research project.

He is the second Chinese scientist with close ties to the military to die in a car crash in recent years.

In July last year, Feng Yanghe, an outstanding young expert in artificial intelligence related to China’s defence sector, died in Beijing on the way to “a major mission” at the age of 38.

Feng was an associate professor at the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) in Changsha, Hunan province, and led teams in developing the War Skull I and War Skull II AI programs used by the People’s Liberation Army to simulate joint operation military war games.

Zhang was born in 1962 in Shandong province in eastern China. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Jilin University in 1987 and a doctorate in space physics from Auburn University in the United States in 2003.

In 2007, he returned to China as a high-level overseas talent and served as a special expert for the CMA, giving up a US green card to devote himself to building and developing China’s space weather sector.

Regarded as “one of the important pioneers and founders” of his field, Zhang is remembered for his outstanding contribution to monitoring and warning technologies and platforms.

According to a 2021 article by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the team led by Zhang implemented and expanded weather application services in key areas such as space, aviation and communications, serviced missions, including Shenzhou and Chang’e, and established business relationships with users like the air force and the civil aviation sector.

As the chief expert in an 863 Programme, also known as China’s State Hi-Tech Development Plan, Zhang led the initial completion of a space weather disaster observation network for short-wave communication, a star-ground radio link and long-distance power grid.

He was also one of the leading scientists behind China’s FengYun series of meteorological satellites.

Among his many positions, Zhang was director of the space weather office of the NSMC, co-chair of the international space weather coordination group of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and an expert adviser to the aviation meteorology working group of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

His achievements earned him many honours, including the titles of outstanding senior returned scholar, CMA leading talent and leadership contribution award from the WMO commission on observing technology systems.

SpaceX wants Starbase to become an official city in Texas

SpaceX is hoping to officially make its Starbase facility a new city in South Texas.

The private spaceflight company submitted a petition to local authorities on Dec. 12, requesting an election on incorporating the Starbase launch site as its own city.

The Starbase facility located near Boca Chica, Texas, has seen some of SpaceX's most ambitious launches, including the recent Starship rocket catch, and will become the company's new headquarters in a move from California to Texas.

"To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community," SpaceX said in the petition, which was shared in a post on X (formally Twitter).

"That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley."

The petition was addressed to Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., the county's top elected official.

The next step will be for officials to review the petition to determine if it complies with statutory requirements. Then, an election would be held to incorporate Starbase.

Starbase serves as SpaceX's primary launch site for Starship test flights, which demonstrate its reusable rocket technology.

The most recent launch on Nov. 19 represented the sixth test flight of the Starship launch vehicle, which proved successful with the first in-space burn of a single Raptor engine for deorbiting processes.

SpaceX is preparing for a seventh test flight in January 2025, which will attempt another booster recovery at the launch site.

Thousands of SpaceX employees work at Starbase, with several hundred living on-site. The company credits the generation of "hundreds of millions in income and taxes for local businesses and government" to the launch facility.

Given the remote location of the launch site, SpaceX already helps manage the area's roads and utilities, and assists with schooling and medical care for residents through agreements with the county.

This is not the first time turning Starbase into its own city has come up. SpaceX founder Elon Musk previously proposed the idea on social media in 2021; however, it was not until Dec. 12 that a petition was officially filed with the support of Starbase residents.

As Syria grapples with a new chapter following the collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa – known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani – has emerged as a key power broker in northern Syria. Leading Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group with roots in Al-Qaeda, al-Sharaa has shed his militant image, donning tailored suits in a calculated bid to rebrand himself as a pragmatic leader. Yet, this transformation masks a bloody history, and the international support enabling HTS raises critical questions about the broader dynamics of the Syrian conflict.

From jihadist operative to pragmatic strategist

Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa began his career as a devoted jihadist operative, rising through the ranks of Al-Qaeda under the mentorship of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and later Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. His establishment of Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria in 2011 marked the beginning of his journey as a key player in the Syrian Civil War. By 2013, al-Sharaa broke from Baghdadi, positioning his group as an independent force.

His leadership was defined by calculated pivots. In 2017, he rebranded Jabhat al-Nusra into HTS, severing formal ties with Al-Qaeda and presenting the group as a local governing entity. While these rebranding efforts were widely dismissed as superficial, they successfully allowed al-Sharaa to attract both regional support and a degree of international tolerance.

A bloody legacy built on fear

HTS’ rise to power has been accompanied by relentless violence, particularly targeting ethnic and religious minorities. Under al-Sharaa’s leadership, the group orchestrated campaigns of terror that cemented its dominance while devastating communities:

The Yazidi genocide (2014): During al-Sharaa’s alignment with ISIS, fighters played a role in the systemic massacre of Yazidis in Sinjar. Thousands of men were executed, while women and children were enslaved in a campaign later recognized as genocide. Survivors described the dehumanizing brutality. “They treated us as animals,” said one Yazidi survivor. “They killed my father and brothers and sold me in a market like I was nothing.”

The Afrin campaign (2018): In northern Syria, HTS targeted Kurdish civilians in a campaign of destruction and displacement. Villages were burned, men executed, and women subjected to widespread sexual violence. “They erased us,” a Kurdish survivor who refused to be identified said in testimony . “Not just our homes, but our history and our future. They call it governance, but it’s just war by another name.”

These atrocities reveal a leadership style rooted in the use of fear and sectarian division as tools of control. They also raise questions about the regional and international support that has sustained HTS despite its violent history.

The role of regional and international backers

While al-Sharaa’s HTS rebrands itself as a governance-focused entity, the group’s operations continue to be bolstered by external support. Regional neighbors, including Türkiye and Qatar, have reportedly played a significant role in funding and arming HTS. Intelligence-sharing and logistical backing have enabled the group to maintain its stronghold in Idlib and expand its influence.

Türkiye’s role: Türkiye, a NATO ally of the US, has been accused of providing weapons, funds, and tactical support to HTS under the guise of countering Kurdish militias. Turkish intelligence has reportedly worked closely with HTS leaders, leveraging the group as a proxy force to advance its geopolitical objectives in northern Syria. This relationship has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups, who warn that Türkiye’s involvement risks normalizing HTS’ control.

Ukraine’s secret service urges neo-Nazis to target MP

Yury Boyko has defended the Russian language and criticized Kiev’s church bans and demolition of monuments

The spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR), Andrey Yusov, has called on “radicals” to go after opposition MP Yury Boyko for criticizing Kiev’s crackdown on the Russian language and attempts to “de-communize” the country.

Over the weekend, Boyko, who had previously served as the co-chairman of the now-banned Opposition Platform – For Life party, published avideo in which he spoke in defense of the Russian language and condemned Kiev’s demolition of monuments, renaming of cities, and the ban on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The politician currently heads the parliamentary group Platform for Life and Peace in the Ukrainian Rada.

Boyko’s video sparked a backlash from a number of top Ukrainian officials, including the head of the presidential office, Andrey Ermak, who called the criticisms “Russian narratives.”

Meanwhile, writing on Facebook,Yusov claimed that the fact that Boyko was still free was a call for action for radical groups in Ukraine and suggested that the “Derussification, decolonization and decommunization of Ukraineshould move so fast that no bastard could even have the time to record a Тiktok.”

Evgeny Karas, a notorious far-right activist and leader of the neo-Nazi S14 group, whose members have a record of harassing minorities and have been accused of high-profile political murders, also called for violence against Boyko.

”Commissioned officers, civilians and demobilized for family reasons,join the squadron of the Holy Inquisition,” Karas wrote on Telegram, calling on them to “roll up their sleeves” and punish Boyko.

On Tuesday,Boyko was summoned for questioning by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), after which he posted another video in which he apologized for his previous comments.

“If any Ukrainians <…> were offended by my words, I want to apologize and say that we must all be united,” the politician said in a video published by the news outlet Strana.

Boyko’s Opposition Platform – For Life party, which was the second largest party in terms of seats in parliament, was banned along with other opposition parties following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. The authorities in Kiev claimed that the opposition had been involved in subversive activities and have prosecuted several MPs linked to the party.

Chinese astronauts conduct record-breaking 9-hour spacewalk outside Tiangong space station

Two Chinese astronauts just secured a spot in spaceflight history.

Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, part of China's three-person Shenzhou 19 mission, spent more than nine hours spacewalking outside the Tiangong space station from late Monday night (Dec. 16) through Tuesday morning (Dec. 17), according to officials with China's Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO).

That broke the previous duration record for a single extravehicular activity (EVA), which was eight hours and 56 minutes, according to NASA.

That mark was set by NASA astronauts James Voss and Susan Helms outside the International Space Station back in March 2001.

This week's EVA was the first for the Shenzhou 19 mission, which arrived at Tiangong on Oct. 29 for a six-month stay.

During the spacewalk, Cai and Song — along with crewmate Wang Haoze, who remained inside Tiangong — "worked closely together, and with the support of the space station's robotic arm and ground scientific researchers, completed the installation of the space station's space debris protection device, the inspection and disposal of extravehicular equipment and facilities, and other tasks," CMSEO officials said in a WeChat update on Tuesday.

"The extravehicular activities were a complete success," they added, also noting that Song, 34, "became China's first astronaut born in the 1990s to conduct extravehicular activities."

According to SpaceNews, the spacewalk began on Monday at 11:51 p.m. EDT (0451 GMT on Dec. 17), when Cai, the Shenzhou 19 commander, exited Tiangong's Wentian module.

Song followed suit more than 90 minutes later, at 1:32 a.m. EDT (0632 GMT).

Both astronauts went back inside Wentian at 8:57 a.m. EDT (1357 GMT) on Tuesday, CMSEO officials wrote in the update.

Those numbers put the EVA's duration at nine hours and six minutes, meaning it broke the old record by just 10 minutes.

The record-setting EVA was the 17th overall outside of Tiangong, according to SpaceNews. The space station's core module, called Tianhe, reached orbit in April 2021.

Two more modules — Wentian and Mengtian — arrived in July 2022 and November 2022, respectively, completing the T-shaped orbital outpost.

Father of GOP nominee won $200,000 in contracts when Joni Ernst was in office, despite conflict of interest rules

A construction company owned by GOP Iowa Senate candidate JoniErnst's father received more than $200,000 in county contracts while she served as auditor of Montgomery County, Iowa, despite a strict conflict of interest code governing the provision of contracts to family members of county officials.

A new review of records as well as an analysis of the Code of Iowa by Salon reveals that the nature of the contracts and how they were promulgated, may have violated relevant county standards.

Ernst is facing Democratic congressman Bruce Braley in a neck-and-neck race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin. Polls show it as too close to call (with several polls finding Ernst with a small lead). Given the volatility of several Senate races this cycle, this particular campaign could potentially help decide which party controls the Senate.

Ernst was elected Montgomery County auditor in 2004, serving in that role until her 2011 election to the state Senate seat she currently holds. Among the duties a county auditor “may perform,” according to the Iowa State Association of County Auditors, are issuing contract bid notices and soliciting and receiving contract proposals. Minutes from an April 2007 Montgomery County Supervisors meeting – printed in the Red Oak Express – note Ernst’s involvement in county contracts, stating that Ernst would “work [the] issue” of advertising bids for a roofing project in the county.

The Iowa Code lays out stringent conflict of interest standards for county contracts. Chapter 331 of the code stipulates that “[a]n officer or employee of a county shall not have an interest, direct, or indirect, in a contract with that county.” The provision applies if 5 percent of a company’s outstanding stock is owned by either a county employee or an immediate family member – including a parent – of an employee.

Still, a search by Salon of Montgomery County records reveals that Culver Construction – a construction company owned by Ernst’s father, Richard Culver – received $215,665 in county contracts during Ernst’s tenure as auditor. The six contracts, all awarded between 2009 and 2010, included five totaling $204,794 from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for such projects as road and flood damage repairs.

County supervisors approved FEMA contracts for Culver ranging in size from an $8,960 grant in December 2010 for the repair of three flood-damaged sites to a $63,501 contract for secondary road construction in August 2009. Supervisors also approved FEMA contracts for Culver of $32,425, $40,428, and $59,480.

According to Montgomery County Supervisors minutes printed in the Red Oak Express, the supervisors unanimously approved Ernst's appointment as the county’s chief financial officer for federal and state assistance following flooding in Iowa on June 7, 2007. Ernst held the role concurrently with her position as county auditor.

Supervisors also awarded Culver a $10,871 contract for a Department of Homeland Security project in April 2010.

As county auditor, Ernst did not have a vote in approving contracts for Culver Construction or any other contractors. Still, the state code’s conflict of interest provision calls for contracts to be voided if any county “officer or employee” has an interest in the contractor.

Late last week, the Des Moines Register reported that American Democracy Legal Fund, a group founded by liberal media watchdog David Brock, has filed a complaint with Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, seeking Miller’s opinion on whether Culver Construction’s contracts violated the state’s conflicts of interest law. The Register’s report did not list the details of Culver Construction’s contracts, noting only that they totaled $215,665. The details of the contracts are first being reported here, as is the relevant section of the code that pertains to potential conflicts.

As Ernst seeks to defeat Braley and retake a long-Democratic Senate seat, Culver Construction has ranked among her top campaign contributors. According to figures compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Ernst’s campaign has received $10,400 in donations from her father’s company.

Spokespersons for the Ernst and Braley campaigns did not respond to Salon’s requests for comment on this story.

George Carey, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, quit after a BBC investigation reported that he allowed a priest who had been banned over sexual abuse claims to return to priesthood.

Joni Ernst considers herself to be a "defender of traditional marriage". But how does she feel about traditional divorce?

This is an important question to ask, as the Iowa GOP's 2012 platform called for an end to no-fault divorce. Additionally, a bill banning no fault divorce for parents of minor children cleared an Iowa House subcommittee last year, before the clock ran out on full committee passage.

The Ernst/Culver family tree (much like many, if not most such family trees) is filled with many tangled branches of divorce and remarriage. Her clan has been taking full advantage of modern, no-fault divorce laws to seek more perfect unions. Including her own parents.

More importantly, if Joni's husband Gail Ernst, had been unable to obtain a no-fault divorce from his wife Ingrid Nesbit (she has also since remarried) they could not have married themselves.Perhaps the proximate cause of his divorce was Gail's falling in love with the young college ROTC woman a few years older than his eldest daughter Regina. Gail describes meeting Joni, "the future Mrs. Ernst".

If that is indeed the case, than Ingrid could have sought out a traditional divorce on the grounds of adultery. Adultery is still prosecuted in the military under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.It is hard to prove. But adultery that had been proven in a court of law between two enlisted military members would have likely meant the destruction of both Joni and Gail's military careers, simply because of who they loved.

Given that, perhaps even Joni Ernst can agree that sometimes it is for the best that traditions evolve.

Joni is a very remarkable woman who constantly amazes me with her concern for others, charitable nature and selfless outlook on life. She is always the first to volunteer her spare time for any worthwhile cause and is frustrated by the lack of participation by others in such events. I mustqualify this endorsement by stating upfront that I am the very very fortunate man that she marriedand that I love her more than life itself- however this will be as unbiased as possible! Here is her story.

Joni was born July 1, 1970 and grew up on a farm in Red Oak Iowa with one older sister and one younger brother. She graduated from Stanton High School honored as the valedictorian of her class. Entering college life at Iowa State University Joni answered another calling and chose to enter the Army ROTC program and also serve her country. In her sophomore year she led a group of young adults from Iowa on the first visit to the Ukraine. She was responsible for the planning coordination and execution of the entire travel itinerary lodging feeding and care of the group. This trip fostered more foreign diplomacy and friendshiptoward the United States than all the years of political attempts at diplomacy.

Giving more of her free time to worthy causes Joni volunteered to work at a safehouse for battered and abused women and children in Ames Iowa. Answering a beeper call at mostly inconvenient and late hours Joni would head to a hospital police station or safehouse to give comfort to a woman or child in need of support. This was accomplished without deterring herfrom a full class schedule and the ROTCcommitment as well. It was at this time that I met and fell in love with the future Mrs. Ernst.

Joni graduated from college and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant Army Engineer Corps. We moved to Savannah Georgia and were married while I was assigned to 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. We were married by a Ranger-qualified Chaplain and Joni assumed the role of Army wife while managing to attend and graduate from the Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood Mo.

We currently live in Columbus Ga. and Joni will graduate with a Master's Degree in Justice Administration December 1994. Here she attends graduate classes works part-time serves as a platoon leader in a Army Reserve Unit and attends all family support activities to assist the lower-ranking soldiers and families during deployments and family separations. She remains the caring compassionate woman giving of her free time to those who have needs always before thinking of her own needs.

My wife and best friend Joni will be a worthy asset to the Plaza of Heroines and I'm very proud to be the one to enter her in a place that she can be honored.

OSTP releases cislunar science and technology plans

The Biden administration is releasing some final space policy documents focused on cislunar activities and technology development.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) published Dec. 18 a policy memorandum directing the development of a cislunar reference system needed for future navigation on and around the moon as well as a cislunar science and technology action plan.

The memorandum directs the federal government, led by NASA, to develop “common reference systems” for the moon, providing an implementation plan to the White House by the end of 2026.

Such reference systems provide a means to determine position and direction and the ability to convert them to other reference systems, like Earth-centered ones.

“A shared understanding of reference systems at the Moon is essential for safe navigation, scientific discovery, and commercial activity, just as it is at Earth,” Arati Prabhakar, director of OSTP, stated in the memo.

“Now is the time for the U.S. to lead a coordinated approach to establishing reference systems at the Moon, while these and complementary foundational standards for Cislunar activities are being defined and infrastructure at the Moon is being built.”

The cislunar reference frame memo follows up on a similar memo from OSTP in April directing the work on a timing system for the moon.

That time standard must account for the effects of general relativity that would cause a clock on the lunar surface to lose nearly 60 microseconds per day compared to a clock on Earth, creating navigation and other challenges.

NASA would lead the development of this new cislunar reference system, working with the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Interior, State and Transportation.

The memo also calls on the agencies to work with the international community on the proposal.

OSTP also released a 15-page National Cislunar Science and Technology Action Plan. That plan is intended to implement a cislunar science and technology strategy the office released in 2022.

That strategy set four objectives to support research and development for cislunar activities, expand international science and technology cooperation, extend space situational awareness (SSA) capabilities into cislunar space and develop cislunar communications and navigation systems.

The first objective, to support research and development for cislunar activities, includes a series of tasks on enabling an “enduring” human presence in cislunar space, conducting science and supporting the workforce.

NASA is the lead for most of those tasks, although the Defense Department is the lead agency on tasks on workforce issues.

The second objective, to expand international science and technology cooperation, endorses the concept of an International Lunar Year by the end of the decade, with the State Department leading that work and a goal of submitting a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly by 2026. Another key area is international cooperation on best practices for safe cislunar activities.

For cislunar SSA, the action plan directs work to identify needs and gaps, and efforts to develop or improve ground- and space-based sensors.

It includes development of an “integrated cislunar object catalog” jointly by NASA, the Defense Department and the Commerce Department, as well as efforts to share data with others that operate in cislunar space.

The final objective calls for the creation of a National Communication and Position, Navigation, and Timing Architecture, with an interagency group led by NASA charged with developing and overseeing that architecture.

The plan endorses the development of standards to make that architecture interoperable with commercial and international systems.

In most cases, the plan does not set specific deadlines for the actions included other than stating that it covers efforts over the next five years.

“Federal departments and agencies should implement these actions in accordance with a core principle of the Strategy: that a key long-term interest of the United States in Cislunar space is to lead in shaping future ‘rules of the road’ and international governance for outer space activities, consistent with the U.S. Space Priorities Framework and National Security Strategy,” the plan states.
