Coventry investigation prompted by discovery of human remains

COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after human remains were found in a Coventry neighborhood, 12 News has learned.
Coventry detectives and FBI agents were seen digging through underbrush with rakes and sifting through leaves in the woodsoff Gadoury Avenue near Eisenhower Street.
K-9s were also seen leading their handlers in and out of the woods as investigators photographed and marked what appeared to be spots of interest with red flags.
Coventry Police Capt. Ryan DeSisto told 12 News human remains were discovered in the woods, though it’s unclear exactly when or where.
DeSisto also confirmed that the human remains are believed to be connected to an “older case,” but did not elaborate further.
“Our goal is to locate any additional evidence that may have been left behind,” DeSisto said. “It’s all hands on deck when you are trying to cover such a large area like this.”
“We are just trying to do our due diligence and make sure we uncover every stone if we need to,” he continued.
Investigators flew a drone through the woods to cover more ground and brought in a back hoe to dig deep down into the dirt. It also appears detectives were scanning the underbrush with metal detectors and collecting various items.
This is the second time the woods near the Coventry-West Warwick town line have been searched in the past week. DeSisto would not confirm whether investigators found anything of note during either search.
“We are still in the fact-finding phase,” he explained, stressing that there’s no threat to the public. “We are trying to gather as much evidence as we can before we move forward with our investigation.”
