At the age of 13, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat said she accidentally knocked over a box in a darkened room. A handgun went off, leaving her father dead.

Julia Nesheiwat went on to serve as homeland security adviser to Mr. Trump during his first term as president. Before that, she had been an Army intelligence officer and later served as a deputy special presidential envoy who worked on securing the release of hostages held worldwide. She is married to Michael Waltz, a Florida congressman whom Mr. Trump recently picked to be his national security adviser.

She initially championed the Covid vaccines, calling them “a gift from God” in a Fox News opinion piece in February 2021. She urged everyone to wear a mask. “Even consider wearing two masks at the same time,” she wrote.

Dr. Nesheiwat spent her career far removed from major research institutions, hospitals or medical schools. Instead, she was a working urgent-care doctor who has spent much of her professional life at CityMD, a for-profit chain of clinics that have sprung up across New York City over the last 15 years. And near the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Nesheiwat began regularly appearing on Fox News as a medical contributor.

Some doctors and health-care experts have raised concerns about urgent care clinics, noting that they could undermine the role of primary care doctors and efforts to focus on wellness and prevention.
But such clinics are here to stay. When Dr. Nesheiwat joined CityMD, the company had no more than a dozen locations in the city. Today it has more than 150 clinics in the region and logs about five million visits a year, according to Walgreens, which owns a controlling interest in the company.

Agent Nicholas Anthony Williams has been arrested and convicted for robbing people blind during home invasion raids—and yes, at least one of those raids targeted a January 6th political prisoner.
As if it wasn’t bad enough that the regime weaponized the FBI to go after non-violent Americans, now we find out that during those raids, Agent Williams was lurking around like a common thief, helping himself to their belongings.
Honestly, this is what the DEI agenda does: it takes our once-esteemed agencies and institutions and turns them into a colossal joke. And sadly, it’s still going strong, as this shameful story proves.

A former FBI agent, Nicholas Anthony Williams, has been convicted of stealing cash, valuables, and other property while executing search warrants, including items taken from the home of a non-violent January 6 defendant. The conviction, tied to a series of thefts spanning years, has further fueled scrutiny of federal law enforcement practices.
Williams, 36, worked in the FBI’s Houston field office since 2019. He was indicted in January 2023 in the Southern District of Texas on charges of theft, fraud, and making false statements.According to court documents, Williams exploited his role as a federal agent to steal money and property during searches, which he then converted for personal use.
The stolen items included cash, silver bars, cell phones, and government-issued property.Williams also made false claims about fraudulent charges on his FBI-issued credit card, alleging they were legitimate case-related expenses. His actions culminated in a September guilty plea, in which he confessed to five thefts committed between 2020 and 2023.
As we mentioned earlier, among the victims that Agent Williams targeted was a Trump supporter, who was raided after he attended the J6 event. Agent Williams ransacked this poor man’s room. The Liberty News piece goes on:

Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as large and clear as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen with the unaided eye even from the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The featured 23-hour exposure, taken from Fagagna, Italy covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six of the sister stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight.

One of Williams’ theft victims was Alexander Fan, a Houston college student who had been sentenced to 12 months of probation for peacefully protesting inside the Capitol during the January 6 riot. With every pass of its hyperspecteal sensors, the aircraft revealed a vibrant tapestry of mineral deposits once invisible to the naked eye.
Hunting minerals: An aerial exploration
Soaring majestically in the sky was NASA’s ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft, its underbelly armed with optical sensors that perceived the earth in hundreds of shades.
To the naked eye, the desert looked a barren brown, but through the lens of these sophisticated sensors, it seemed to burst with colors, each representing a hidden mineral treasure.
This flight was part of an ambitious venture known as the Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx), led by NASA in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Creating mineral maps
The goal was to map minerals vital to American national security, the tech industry, and clean energy. The survey was focused on an area almost the size of Spain, including the states of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon.
High above the sunlit, arid landscapes of the American West, a NASA aircraft soared on a mission to map the minerals hidden below.
This wasn’t a journey to explore distant galaxies but a critical quest to uncover the resources essential for America’s renewable energy future.
From lithium for electric vehicles to rare earth elements crucial for wind turbines, these hidden treasures hold the potential to drive the nation’s clean energy ambitions.

The ground beneath these lands was about to reveal secrets that could contribute to the country’s self-sufficiency in obtaining mineral commodities.
“We’ve been exploring the earth beneath our feet for hundreds of years, and we’re discovering that we’ve only just begun,” said Kevin Reath, NASA’s associate project manager for GEMx.
Spectrometer: The new lens
In addition to traditional tools like lidar and magnetic-radiometric sensors, this mineral exploration effort harnesses the power of imaging spectrometers.
These high-tech optical tools detect various wavelengths of light reflected off planetary surfaces. They will now aid in mapping surface minerals across the treeless expanses of the Western United States.
By reflecting a unique light pattern, each molecule acts like a fingerprint. Through a spectroscopic lens, therefore, a barren desert can transform into a canvas of colors, each revealing a different mineral presence including mica, kaolinite, and gypsum.
“We’re not digging for gold. We’re revealing what’s hidden in plain sight,” said Robert Green, a scientist involved in the GEMx project.

Broader focus of the research
As the GEMx flights prepare to resume in the spring of 2025, scientists anticipate a treasure trove of data, paving the way for the first-ever complete hyperspectral map of California.
Besides identifying mineral deposits, the research is expected to yield insight into invasive plant species, mine waste that can contaminate surrounding environments, and natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and wildfires.
“We are just beginning to scratch the surface in applying these measurements to help the nation’s economy, security, and health,” shared Raymond Kokaly, the GEMx survey lead from USGS.

NASA Nighttime Images Reveal Arctic Industrial Activity

The Arctic, once defined by its frozen, inhospitable climate and long winter nights, is experiencing dramatic transformations as the region warms almost four times faster than the global average.
This rapid warming has spurred increased industrial activity and development, changes now illuminated in striking detail by nighttime satellite observations.
An international team of researchers, leveraging data from the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, has discovered that artificial lighting in the Arctic increased by 5 percent annually between 1992 and 2013.
Over this 21-year span, 234,000 square miles of the Arctic landscape transitioned from dark to lit.
"Only 15 percent of the lit-up areas of the Arctic during the study period contained human settlements like homes or apartment buildings, which tells us that most of the artificial light is due to industrial activities rather than urban or residential development," Zhuosen Wang, a member of the research team and a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement.
Key drivers of this illumination include oil and gas extraction and mining operations.
The study found stark contrasts across the Arctic. The Russian Arctic experienced the largest growth in artificial light, with lit areas expanding by almost 170,000 square miles—an area larger than the footprint of California.
Regions such as Khanty-Mansi and Yamal-Nenets led this surge, fueled by oil field expansions—such as the Samotlor, one of the world's largest oil fields.
By 2013, oil and gas extraction zones in Russia's Arctic—including Khanty-Mansi, Yamal-Nenets and Nenets—spanned a lit area of 131,000 square miles, almost the size of Germany.
Extractive industries showed patterns of both growth and regression. Wang said, "Extractive industries follow lifecycle phases of expansion and contraction, which is why we see reductions in artificial lights in some places reliant on oil, gas, or mining, without significant human settlement and economic diversification."
The European Arctic accounted for a total of 61,000 square miles of illuminated area, significantly surpassing the 19,000 square miles observed in the North American Arctic.
Among notable industrial sites, the research team identified key mineral extraction operations, including Alaska's remote Red Dog Mine, which was recognized as the world's second-largest zinc producer as of 2018.
While data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program provided the foundation for this analysis, NASA's Black Marble team, led by Wang, is working with newer, higher-resolution data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite instrument aboard NASA-NOAA satellites.
While this data can detect dimmer light sources, the team faces challenges such as filtering out natural light from auroras and moonlit snow.
"By providing real-time, high-resolution insights, we will be able to better identify changes in industrial activity," Miguel Román, the deputy director for atmospheres at Goddard, said in a statement.
He added, "These analyses can help ensure responsible resource management and protect the ecosystems vital to both local and global stability."

Jake Tapper and CNN Lose Major Motions in Defamation Case by Navy VeteranMedia, Politics, Torts December 9, 2024. 1/2
We previously discussed the defamation lawsuit brought by Navy veteran Zachary Young against CNN and anchor Jake Tapper.Young has been doing well in court and last week he won on additional major issues against CNN. In a pair of orders, the jury will be allowed to award punitive damages and his experts would be allowed to be heard by the jury on the damages in the case. It also found that the Navy veteran was not a public figure and thus is not subject to the higher standard of proof associated with that status.
The punitive damages decision is particularly interesting legally.It could prove financially onerous for the struggling network, which has plunging ratings and has reduced staff.
The court found that CNN’s “retraction” was insufficient to remove punitive damages from the table. In my torts class, we discuss retraction statutes and the requirements of time and clarity. I specifically discussed the CNN case.
The report at the heart of the case aired on a Nov. 11, 2021 segment on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” and was shared on social media and (a different version) on CNN’s website. In the segment, Tapper tells his audience ominously how CNN correspondent Alex Marquardt discovered “Afghans trying to get out of the country face a black market full of promises, demands of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.”
Marquardt piled on in the segment, claiming that “desperate Afghans are being exploited” and need to pay “exorbitant, often impossible amounts” to flee the country.He then named Young and his company as an example of that startling claim.
The damages in the case could be massive but Young was facing the higher New York Times v. Sullivanstandard of “actual malice,” requiring a showing of knowing falsehood or a reckless disregard of the truth.Judge Roberts previously found that “Young sufficiently proffered evidence of actual malice, express malice, and a level of conduct outrageous enough to open the door for him to seek punitive damages.”
The evidence included messages from Marquardt that he wanted to “nail this Zachary Young mfucker” and thought the story would be Young’s “funeral.” After promising to “nail” Young, CNN editor Matthew Philips responded: “gonna hold you to that cowboy!” Likewise, CNN senior editor Fuzz Hogan described Young as “a shit.”
As is often done by media,CNN allegedly gave Young only two hours to respond before the story ran. It is a typical ploy of the press to claim that they waited for a response while giving the target the smallest possible window.
In this case, Young was able to respond in the short time and Marquardt messaged a colleague, “fucking Young just texted.”
That record supports a showing of actual malice. However, CNN wanted to avoid punitive damages with a claim of retraction. Under Florida’s Section §770.02(1), a publication seeking this protection must publish a “full and fair correction, apology or retraction.” While the statute does not define “full and fair”it does specify that the retraction shall be “published in the same editions or corresponding issues of the newspaper or periodical” where the original article appearedand ‘in as conspicuous place and type’ as the original, or for a broadcast “at a comparable time.”
In this case, Jake Tapper made the following statement on March 25, 2022:
“And before we go, a correction. In November, we ran a story about Afghans desperate to pay high sums beyond the reach of average Afghans. The story included a lead-in and banner throughout the story that referenced a black market.The use of the term black market in the story was in error. The story included reporting on Zachary Young, a private operator who had been contacted by family members of Afghans trying to flee the country. We didn’t mean to suggest that Mr. Young participated in the black market. We regret the error and to Mr. Young, we apologize.”
However, the court noted:
“The retraction/correction was not made during the other television shows in which the Segment aired. No retraction, correction or apology was posted on any online article or with any social media posting. Defendant’s representatives referred to the statement made on the Jake Tapper show as a correction rather than a retraction.”
Not only did the court find that insufficient, but it menacingly added, “the Court finds that there is an issue of material fact as to whether Defendant published a full and fair retraction as required by §770.02 for the televised segment and no retraction for the social media and online article postings, which could be additional evidence of actual malice.”

This is relatively new ground for the Florida courts and will undoubtedly be appealed in time.For now, punitive damages will remain an option for the jury. The message to news organizations is that minimizing retractions can produce a critical loss of the coverage of the common statutory provisions protecting the media.
It is also worth noting that Young was found to be a private individual and not a “public figure.” After the Supreme Court handed down New York Times v. Sullivan, it extended the actual malice standard from public officials to public figures. In Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323, 345 (1974), the Court wrote:
“Hypothetically, it may be possible for someone to become a public figure through no purposeful action of his own, but the instances of truly involuntary public figures must be exceedingly rare. For the most part those who attain this status have assumed roles of especial prominence in the affairs of society. Some occupy positions of such persuasive power and influence that they are deemed public figures for all purposes. More commonly, those classed as public figures have thrust themselves to the forefront of particular public controversies in order to influence the resolution of the issues involved. In either event, they invite attention and comment.”
The Supreme Court has held that public figure status applies when someone “thrust[s] himself into the vortex of [the] public issue [and] engage[s] the public’s attention in an attempt to influence its outcome.” A limited-purpose public figure status applies if someone voluntarily “draw[s] attention to himself” or allows himself to become part of a controversy “as a fulcrum to create public discussion.” Wolston v. Reader’s Digest Association, 443 U.S. 157, 168 (1979).
In creating this higher burden, the Court sought to create “breathing space” for the media by articulating that standard for both public officials and public figures. Public figures are viewed as having an enhanced ability to defend themselves and engaging in “self-help” in the face of criticism. The Court also viewed these figures as thrusting themselves into the public eye, voluntarily assuming the risk of heightened criticism. I have previously written about the continuing questions over the inclusion of public figures with public officials in tort actions.
However, the court found that Young did not trip this wire.
“Young’s limited posts do not constitute him thrusting himself ‘to the forefront’ of the Afghanistan evacuation ‘controversy.’ In total, Plaintiffs worked for four companies and evacuated 22 people from Afghanistan. Per Defendant’s Segment, ‘[t]here [were] fewer than Page 13 of 34100 American citizens in Afghanistan who [were] ready to leave’ and ‘countless Afghans, including thousands who worked for or aided the US . . . who are frantically trying to leave.’ While Young was clearly trying to advertise his services, it can hardly be said that he played a sufficiently central role or was at the forefront in being able to influence the resolution of all those unable to escape Afghanistan. He was not going to get all these thousands of people out, nor was he ever intending to as he (according to his posts and testimony) was only assisting those with sponsors. He also was not going to convince the Taliban to let these folks leave the country. As such, Plaintiffs do not meet the test for this second suggested controversy to be labeled as limited public figures.”
The court also ruled that Young would be allowed to keep his economic damages expert witness, Richard Bolko, a ruling that, in conjunction with the punitive damages matter, could spell real trouble for CNN.KEK

There appears to be some unknown feature of the universe that is affecting its expansion, scientists have said.
New measurements from the Webb telescope – Nasa’s most powerful space observatory – could help explain one of the deepest mysteries of the cosmos, according to the researchers behind them.
For years, scientists have been troubled by an unusual feature of our universe. It appears to be expanding faster today than it did in the past – and researchers are not sure why.
Now the Webb telescope has confirmed those unexpected measurements, which were previously shown by Nasa’s Hubble Space Telescope.
That suggests there is something unknown happening in the universe, rather than an error in that telescope’s measurements.
“The discrepancy between the observed expansion rate of the universe and the predictions of the standard model suggests that our understanding of the universe may be incomplete,” said Adam Riess, the lead author of a new paper on the findings.
“With two Nasa flagship telescopes now confirming each other’s findings, we must take this [Hubble tension] problem very seriously—it’s a challenge but also an incredible opportunity to learn more about our universe.”

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Still reeling from the party’s electoral losses last month, the country’s Democratic governors descended on a plush Beverly Hills hotel on Friday and Saturday for a series of closed-door meetings with donors, interest groups and advocacy organizations. Officially, the event was a time to chart a path forward under a Trump administration.
Unofficially, it also served as a preview of the next Democratic primary.
“You're witnessing the kickoff to the 2028 presidential primary, live and in-person,” said one adviser to major Democratic Party donors, granted anonymity to speak candidly. He added: “This is the audition for the next president to a room full of donors, operatives, reporters, etc.”
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, emphasized that the meeting was focused on the near term: keeping New Jersey and flipping Virginia in 2025, and on the “huge contingent of governors races in ’26.”
“Trust me, we're not thinking beyond ’26 at this point,” she said.
But it was hard to ignore the weekend’s guest list stacked with potential 2028 contenders,including Govs. Gavin Newsom of California, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Tim Walz of Minnesota, JB Pritzker of Illinois and Roy Cooper of North Carolina. And for two days here, in this state that has long served as a bastion of Democratic politics, the Beverly Hilton was teeming with donors, strategists and lobbyists eager to land meetings with the rising stars.
Asked about the jockeying for 2028, Cooper told POLITICO: “I'll just say that there are a lot of great governors across this country who will make great leaders in the future.”
Democratic governors are preparing to thread a fine line between standing up to President-elect Donald Trump’s Republican trifecta in Washington and collaborating with the incoming administration.
Immediately following the election, some Democratic governors launched plans to “Trump-proof” their states, and in a memo released this week, Meghan Meehan-Draper, DGA’s executive director, wrote that Democratic governors would be the “Last Line of Defense” against the incoming GOP trifecta in the federal government.
Blue-state governors have been explicit that they intend to try to block some Trump policies — efforts that will also likely raise their own profiles. Pritzker and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis are leading an organization to “back against increasing threats of autocracy and fortifying the institutions of democracy that our country and our states depend upon” — and although the privately-funded group is non-partisan, the implications are clear.
“You come for my people, you come through me,” Pritzker told reporters last month in a warning to the incoming administration.
In deep-blue New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James created an initiative to “address any policy and regulatory threats that may emerge from a Trump Administration.” In California, Newsom called a special session of the legislature to lay the legal groundwork for the state to lead its second Trump resistance.

And Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said, “We've already taken from the last rodeo considerable efforts that have been considerably successful to prevent him from abusing our state financially and taking away our resources [and] targeting us.”

But with the election loss still smarting, the event implicitly raised the question of who might have the right formula for the next one. Inslee said the governors are “focused on the election cycle for governors right now.” Still, he acknowledged that “the day after every election is the beginning” of the next one.
While the positioning for governors in 2017 was more stridently opposing Trump, this time around they seem to be hedging their bets. Newsom has promised he would offer an “open hand, not a closed fist,” to the incoming administration and other governors signaled a willingness to work alongside Trump on some issues.
Whitmer, who said her state "played a role in supporting president Trump" also saidshe hoped she would find ways to work with the president-elect. She emphasized “I won’t abandon my values, but I’m going to work hard to find common ground everywhere I can.”
“I've got two more years, and my goal is do everything I can for the state,” Whitmer added.
Cooper — who will be replaced as North Carolina governor in January by Democrat Josh Stein — said it would be “really important” for his successor to work with the federal government to help the state recover from Hurricane Helene.
And many acknowledged that the demands of their job required them to pick up the phone when the Trump administration calls. “We will continue to do what we do, which is work with whoever we need to work with to get what we need for our states,” Kelly said.

Can Biden pardon a person or a group of people who have not been convicted of a crime? Must the pardon be specific to the person and the crime, or can Biden bestow a guarantee that a person or group of people may commit crimes with absolutely no legal consequences.

Much wasteful spending is happening on America’s college campuses. DOGE chiefs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy can push Congress to launch a thorough investigation into these questionable expenditures, particularly federally funded research projects that push far-left ideologies.
Here are 10 outrageous examples of university studies funded by taxpayer dollars obtained by Campus Reform:
1. Gambling for Pigeons
The National Institute of Health (NIH) granted $465,339 to researchers at Reed College in Portland, Oregon to “create a token-based economy where pigeons are taught to gamble with slot machines.”
The study gave pigeons tokens that they can “earn, accumulate, spend, or gamble” on slot machines, the New York Post reports.
2. Chimps Throwing Feces
The US National Institutes of Health spent $592,527 at Emory University in Atlanta to explore why chimpanzees throw feces. Another $117,000 was necessary to conclude that most chimps are right-handed, the Washington Examiner reports.
Their research suggests that throwing feces is a sign of intelligence in chimps.
3. Drunken Finches
The National Institutes of Health gave $5 million to the Oregon Health & Science University to study if finches slurred their songs when alcohol was in their systems.
The birds were given white grape juice spiked with alcohol, which impacted their singing ability, NBC News reports.
4. Bees on Cocaine
The National Institutes of Health funded over $240,000 to study the impact of cocaine on honey bees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
With cocaine in their system, the bees were more likely to dance, the researcher found.
5. Shrimp on Treadmills
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded $1.3 million to make shrimp run on tiny treadmills at the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
The study tested how sickness impaired shrimp mobility.

Sun unleashes surprise X-class solar flare triggering radio blackout over southern Africa

The sun appears to have woken from its slumber with an impulsive X-class solar flare, the most powerful class of solar flare.
The dramatic eruption originated from sunspot region 3912, reaching its peak at 4:06 a.m. EST (0906 GMT) on Dec. 8, and was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME) — a large plume of magnetic field and plasma from the sun.
When CMEs (also known as solar storms) hit Earth's magnetosphere they can trigger active geomagnetic storm conditions resulting in impressive auroras.
Earth may receive a glancing blow from the CME released yesterday (Dec. 8) but only mild impacts are predicted, according to Space Weather Physicist Tamitha Skov.
"The #solarstorm launched will graze Earth to the west. Sadly, the coming fast solar wind streams might deflect the structure even further to the west.
Expect only mild impacts by midday December 11," Space Weather Physicist Tamitha Skov wrote in a post on X.
What are solar flares?
Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy originating from the sun's surface that release strong bursts of electromagnetic radiation.
Solar flares are categorized into five classes: A, B, C, M, and X. Each step up represents a tenfold increase in strength.
A-class flares are the weakest and generally go unnoticed on Earth, while X-class flares are the most intense and can have significant impacts, such as disrupting satellites and causing radio blackouts.
Within each class, a numerical scale (e.g., X1, X2, X10, etc.) provides more detail about the flare's energy level.
Following the eruption of an X-class solar flare, shortwave radio blackouts were observed over southern Africa, the area illuminated by the sun at the time of the outburst.
These radio disruptions, which are typical during powerful solar events, are caused by the intense release of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation accompanying the flare.
Radiation from solar flares travels to Earth at the speed of light, ionizing the upper atmosphere when it arrives.
This ionization increases the density of the atmosphere, affecting high-frequency shortwave radio signals used for long-distance communication.
As these radio waves pass through the electrically charged, ionized layers, they experience energy loss due to more frequent collisions with electrons, which can weaken or even fully absorb the radio signals.

Congressmen push FAA to accelerate licensing process
December 9, 2024
As the Federal Aviation Administration kicks off a committee to study ways to refine launch and reentry regulations, two members of Congress are asking the agency to move even faster to reform those rules.
In a Dec. 6 letter to FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker, Reps. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), chair of the House Transportation Committee, and Rob Wittman (R-Va.) called for the FAA to pursue “all actions short of rulemaking” to expedite the licensing process under regulations known as Part 450.
Those regulations have been a source of frustration for many companies in the industry, who have complained about the difficulty in getting licenses under those regulations, which went into effect in 2021.
While many companies operate under older regulations, they must shift to Part 450 by March 2026.
In their letter, Graves and Wittman focused on a process known as pre-application consultation, where companies meet with the FAA to discuss their launch or reentry vehicle prior to submitting a formal license application.
The submission of a completed license starts a 180-day clock for the FAA to either issue a license or reject the application.
“However, this timeframe does not include the months, and oftentimes years, of pre–application review that create extensive delays for companies seeking a launch and reentry license,” the congressmen wrote.
“These delays have a direct impact on the United States’ standing in space exploration and our strategic competition with a growing number of adversarial nations seeking to disrupt our space capabilities and support their own.”
The letter came a day after the FAA announced it held the first meeting of a space-related aerospace rulemaking committee, or SpARC, that will look at ways to reform Part 450.
The FAA said in November it had established the SpARC after announcing early this year its intent to charter a committee to find ways to improve the regulations.
“The FAA is seeking to foster more clarity, flexibility, efficiency and innovation while ensuring timely licensing determinations without compromising public safety,” the agency stated.
It will focus on nine topics, including flight safety analyses, system safety and means of compliance, and plans to release recommendations by late summer of 2025.
Graves and Wittman said in their letter that they welcomed the establishment of the SpARC but called on the FAA to do more.
“We, however, urge the FAA to act now and ensure that all actions short of rulemaking that can help mitigate the deficiencies of the part 450 regulation are taken in advance of any necessary regulatory changes to ensure that the commercial space industry does not have to wait years for relief.”
That sentiment is shared by the Commercial Space Federation (CSF), an industry group that represents many companies seeking Part 450 licenses.
“That’s a great step in the right direction. The SpARCs are great for long-term fixes,” said Dave Cavossa, president of CSF, in a recent interview.
“But there’s stuff that the FAA can do right now within its own power, and I think with some guidance from Congress and the new administration, there’s a lot of things the FAA can do themselves in the next 120 days to make launch licensing flow more smoothly.”
The SpARC includes 24 members, which the FAA said includes “current and prospective” licensees with experience with Part 450.
The FAA did not disclose the names of specific individuals but listed companies that include major launch operators like Blue Origin, SpaceX, United Launch Alliance and Virgin Galactic.
Also on the list is Varda Space Industries, which struggled to get a Part 450 reentry license for its first mission.
The company launched that mission without a reentry license, and the lengthy process to get a license extended its mission by several months. The FAA now requires companies that need a reentry license to obtain it before launch.
During a panel discussion at the SpaceNews Icon Awards Dec. 6, Eric Lasker, chief revenue officer of Varda, called for increasing the staffing of the FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation to handle the higher volume of license applications.
“There’s ways to streamline it even further,” he said, such as getting a license for multiple missions.
One challenge the company faces outside of the Part 450 process is a lack of reentry locations in the United States.
The company landed its first mission at the Utah Test and Training Range, but that was a complicated effort. The company will use a range in Australia for its second mission.
“Some kind of reentry range that’s unique from launch ranges,” he said, “would probably be the biggest enabler for a company like ours.”

When the Carter Page FISA application was originally assembled by the FBI and DOJ, there was initial hesitancy from within the DOJ National Security Division (DOJ-NSD) about submitting the application, because it did not have enough citations in evidence (the infamous ‘Woods File’). That’s why the Steele Dossier ultimately became important. It was the Steele Dossier that provided the push, the legal cover needed for the DOJ-NSD to submit the application for a Title-1 surveillance warrant against the campaign of Donald J. Trump.
When the application was finally assembled for submission to the FISA court, the head of the DOJ-NSD was John Carlin. Carlin quit working for the DOJ-NSD in late September 2016 just before the final application was submitted (October 21,2016). John Carlin was replaced by Deputy Asst. Attorney General, Mary McCord.
♦ When the FISA application was finally submitted (approved by Sally Yates and James Comey), it was Mary McCord who did the actual process of filing the application and gaining the Title-1 surveillance warrant.
A few months later, February 2017, with Donald Trump now in office as President, it was Mary McCord who went with Deputy AG Sally Yates to the White House to confront White House legal counsel Don McGahn over the Michael Flynn interview with FBI agents. The surveillance of Flynn’s calls was presumably done under the auspices and legal authority of the FISA application Mary McCord previously was in charge of submitting.
♦ At the time the Carter Page application was filed (October 21, 2016), Mary McCord’s chief legal counsel inside the office was a DOJ-NSD lawyer named Michael Atkinson. In his role as the legal counsel for the DOJ-NSD, it was Atkinson’s job to review and audit all FISA applications submitted from inside the DOJ. Essentially, Atkinson was the DOJ internal compliance officer in charge of making sure all FISA applications were correctly assembled and documented.

Ukrainian engineers have achieved a significant breakthrough in military Drone Technology with the development of a fiber-optic Tethered drone that operates beyond the reach of electronic warfare systems.

The remaining elements, particularly microelectronics, must be sourced internationally, primarily from China, highlighting ongoing industrial capacity constraints in Ukraine‘s defense sector.
Intelligence officer “Tundra” contextualizes the rapid evolution of drone warfare: “With fiber-optic drones, even the most advanced interception systems lose their effectiveness.”
However, he also notes the constant technological race, observing that countermeasures typically emerge within three months of any new capability’s deployment.
The system is scheduled for operational deployment with Ukrainian forces in 2025, following successful military trials.
