Why Whoopi Goldberg Is Feuding With a Staten Island Bakery

The left-leaning host of “The View” said the business in a Republican stronghold declined to take an order under her name. The bakery said politics had nothing to do with it.

A small sponge cake topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry is the crux of a political skirmish between Whoopi Goldberg and a 146-year-old Staten Island bakery.

Ms. Goldberg said Holtermann’s Bakery, in the heart of New York City’s reddest borough, refused to fill an order placed under her name, perhaps because of her liberal politics.

The bakery’s owner said it wasn’t personal and that politics had nothing to do with it.

Now, the bakery’s phone is ringing off the hook, and customers are lining up to show their support for a Staten Island institution — and their opposition to Ms. Goldberg.

In the final minutes of Wednesday’s episode of“The View,” Ms. Goldberg said she was celebrating her birthday with an old-fashioned pastry, charlotte russe, that had been a favorite of her mother’s.

“I should tell you, charlotte russe has no political leanings,” she said. “And the place that made these refused to make them for me.”

The live audience gasped. Ms. Goldberg’s co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin paused, stricken, forks frozen halfway to their mouths. Another co-host, Sara Haines, spit a forkful of the dessert back onto her plate.

Ms. Goldberg, a native New Yorker, explained that the bakery had turned away her order, citing an equipment problem.But the bakery accepted the same order, this time placed with no mention of her name, a few days later, according to a person familiar with both pastry orders. “Perhaps they did not like my politics,” said Ms. Goldberg, a Democratic stalwart who, along with the five other hosts of “The View,” backed Kamala Harris.

Ms. Goldberg did not name the bakery on air. But viewers recognized the packaging — a red polka-dot cardboard cup — as the work of Holtermann’s, which is operated out of a weathered storefront in the Great Kills neighborhood by the great-grandchildren of Claus Holtermann, who founded the bakery in 1878. Many locals have been patrons for decades.

The Holtermanns dispute Ms. Goldberg’s insinuation. The bakery’s boiler was broken when the call came in, said Bill Holtermann, a co-owner.

“It was a misunderstanding,” Mr. Holtermann said. “I don’t even have a cellphone. I’m just trying to bake.”

While Mr. Holtermann said that the bakery’s refusal was not politically motivated, on Staten Island, where Donald J. Trump trounced Ms. Harris by more than 30 percentage points, Ms. Goldberg’s umbrage has been a windfall for the bakery.

On Friday, the island’s Republican borough president, Vito Fossella, held a news conference outside the storeto “stand up for one of the best families and businesses not just Staten Island but this country would appreciate.”

He called on Ms. Goldberg to apologize: “Just say you’re sorry so we can put this behind us and look forward to a great Thanksgiving and keeping this country great again.”

On Saturday afternoon, the line snaked out the door. People had come from as far away as Philadelphia. Coffee danish rings, cupcakes and coconut custard pies in old-school blue-and-white boxes flew off the shelves. Each fresh batch of charlotte russes sold out in minutes.

“We want to get ‘The View’ canceled,” said Barbara Volpe, 73. “All they care about on that show is politics. They’re always degrading Trump, and we love him here.”

Anthony Saltarelli said he did not buy Ms. Goldberg’s account.

“What she’s insinuating wasn’t true, and I think it backfired,” said Mr. Saltarelli, 58, who lives miles away on the island’s North Shore. “I never come to this part of Staten Island, but today I did.”

In an Instagram post on Friday, Ms. Goldberg apparently remained unswayed by the Holtermanns’ explanation.

“It does seem a little odd,” she said. But she didn’t let the contretemps ruin her special day — or her charlotte russes.

“I enjoyed my delicious dessert and I had a happy, sweet birthday,” she said. “Nothing better than that.”

Comcast to spin off MSNBC, CNBC, entertainment channels as streaming dents cable: sources

Comcast is moving forward with plans to spin off its NBCUniversal cable television networks including MSNBC and CNBC, sources say, shedding a once core part of the business that has been a casualty of the streaming video revolution.

The company last month told investors it was evaluating hiving off its cable networks into a separate company owned by Comcast’s shareholders.

“We think there could be an opportunity to play some offense,” said Comcast President Michael Cavanagh said during the company’s third-quarter investor call.

The new venture would be well-capitalized, said one source, who added on Tuesday that it would be positioned to acquire other cable networks if the industry consolidates.

Comcast would retain NBCUniversal’s NBC broadcast television network, its film and television studios and its theme parks, as well as its Peacock streaming service. Comcast also would retain its Xfinity broadband service.

The spinoff would be comprised of the cable news outlets and other cable networks, such as USA, E!, Syfy and the Golf Channel, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the decision.

These still-profitable networks generated about $7 billion in revenue over the last 12 months, the Journal reported.

The cable networks were an attractive lure when Comcast completed its takeover of NBC Universal in 2011, but the rise in popularity of streaming services has eroded cable TV subscriptions and viewership.

In August, Warner Bros Discovery wrote down the value of its television assets by $9 billion. Paramount Global followed suit, taking a $5.98 billion charge for its television networks that same month. Walt Disney evaluated shedding its cable networks earlier this year, but ultimately rejected the idea.

A Memphis florist has received massive backlash after saying she won't do business with Donald Trump supporters after his 2024 election win.

Kristin Wolter, 49, made the announcement on the now-private Instagram account for her business, Everbloom Designs.

'I won't do business with people who support the president-elect,' she said in the video, which circulated widely social media beginning last week.

'It is because I need to create a safe place for me, my staff, and my family.'

Wolter said she was shocked that her 'community chose financial concerns and economy over human rights and decency,' Newsmax host Todd Starnes wrote in a post on X.

Wolter issued a second statement after receiving blowback to her initial comments, according to KWAM News Radio 900. The station posted an announcement on Saturday saying that the shop would be closed the 'rest of the week due to threats to me and my business.'

'I knew standing up for what I believe in would have consequences,' the note read.

'I am so grateful to those of you that have supported me in this. They are showing their true colors and lack of decency and humanity.'

A listing for the business on Google indicated the florist was temporarily closed as of Tuesday.

DailyMail.com made several attempts to contact Wolter.

A phone call to the shop on Tuesday went to voicemail. The contact page on its website also appears to have been disabled, as does the company's Facebook page.

Memphis was one of the few places in Tennesseethat went blue during the 2024 race, where Trump won 64 percent of the state's votes.

Many Trump supporters were quick to call for a boycott against Wolter's business and said she was 'sabotaging' herself.

'Talk about sabotaging your own business,' one X user wrote.

'She'll file for bankruptcy by Inauguration Day,' another said.

'We certainly appreciate the heads up!' Starnes added. 'I'm sure there are other places for people to buy pansies - places that don't discriminate based on political affiliation.'

'If you can't handle a difference of opinion, you probably shouldn't be in business. Memphis deserves better than this,' another commenter wrote.

=Abel Maldonado served as former California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lieutenant governorbefore stepping down to mount an unsuccessful run for Congress. Maldonado is the son of immigrant farmworkers, a winery owner, one-time mayor and former California state lawmaker.

Former Trump White House and USDA official Ray Starling’s name has been in the mix for some time, but his stock is rising among some Trump officials. They argue Starling is more of a mainstream pick and could reassure conservative-leaning agriculture groups that have been rattled by Trump’s decision to tap Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for HHS secretary, which gives him direct oversight of FDA.

Trump watches SpaceX launch Starship's 6th test flight

The bond between Elon Musk and Donald Trump appears to be getting stronger.

Musk was a big supporter of Trump's campaign over the past few months, and the president-elect recently appointed the SpaceX founder and CEO to co-lead the new "Department of Government Efficiency," which aims to slash regulations and reduce government spending.

And today (Nov. 19), Trump made the trek to South Texas to watch SpaceX launch its giant Starship rocket for the sixth time ever.

"I'm heading to the Great State of Texas to watch the launch of the largest object ever to be elevated, not only to Space, but simply by lifting off the ground.

Good luck to @ElonMusk and the Great Patriots involved in this incredible project!" Trump posted today on X, the social media platform that Musk owns.

Musk gave Trump and several other VIPs a tour of mission control before the Starship launch, which occurred from SpaceX's Starbase site, near the Texas border city of Brownsville.

Trump watched the liftoff from a safe distance, taking the action in from across a decent-size body of water.

SpaceX wanted to catch Starship's first-stage booster, known as Super Heavy, with the "chopstick" arms of Starbase's launch tower during today's test flight, as it did during the most recent Starship flight, on Oct. 13.

But engineers noticed something in the flight data today and called the attempt off, instead diverting Super Heavy to a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

Pretty much everything else went according to plan today, however.

For example, Starship's 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper stage, called Starship or simply "Ship," successfully re-lit one of its engines in space, demonstrating a capability that will be needed during orbital missions down the road.

And Ship survived its return trip through Earth's atmosphere in one piece today, hitting its target splashdown zone in the Indian Ocean about 65.5 minutes after liftoff.

Trump has shown enthusiasm before for Starship, which SpaceX is developing to take people and cargo to the moon and Mars.

For instance, in a speech broadcast on election night (Nov. 5), Trump recalled watching the "chopsticks" booster catch of Super Heavy on Oct. 13

"And I called Elon. I said, 'Elon, was that you?' He said, 'Yes, it was.' I said, 'Who else can do that? Can Russia do it? 'No.' Can China do it?'

Bracing For Retaliation, US Shuts Embassy In Kiev Over Air Attack Risk

Washington appears fully aware it has poked the Russian bear, after President Biden greenlighted Ukraine striking Russian territory with long-range missiles.

US officials have warned Wednesday that "potential significant air attack" on Kiev is likely coming, and have announced the closure of the US Embassy in the capital "out of an abundance of caution". This follows immediately on the heels of Ukrainian forces having struck an arms depot inside Russia with U.S.-supplied weapons, specifically the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), on Tuesday.

"Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place," a new alert on the embassy website said. "The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced."

Embassy diplomats and all staff are being asked to observe the following precautions:

Monitor local media for updates

Identify shelter locations in advance of any air alert

Immediately take shelter if an air alert is announced

Follow the directions of Ukrainian officials and first responders in the event of an emergency

The embassy closure is also happening the day after Putin signed a decree which updates and expands Russia's nuclear doctrine, which effectively lowers the threshold for nuclear weapons use. "As we said earlier this month, we were not surprised by Russia’s announcement that it would update its nuclear doctrine; Russia had been signaling its intent to update its doctrine for several weeks," the White House National Security Council responded in a statement.

Other Western embassies have also shuttered their operations amid air raid warnings in Kiev and other regions, including Italy, Spain, and Greece.

12 UK Storm Shadow Missiles Were Fired Into Russia, Local Sources Say

Update(1227ET): More details have emerged of Wednesday's Storm Shadow missile attack from Ukraine on Russia. This marks the first authorized known use of the long-range weapon in a cross-border attack. Previously the British government restricted use to within the Ukrainian battlespace, in the Donbass for example.

Russian war correspondents have confirmed that "A missile’s flight was heard over Kursk. There’s information about a Storm Shadow attack near Rylsk." While the extent of damage or precise targets is unclear, sources on the ground say that up to a dozen Storm Shadows were fired:

Rylsk’s territorial defense forces claimed that 12 Storm Shadow missiles were launched at around 2:50 p.m. Bloomberg, citing an anonymous Western official, also reported that Ukraine had fired Storm Shadow missiles on targets in Russia.

Kursk regional Governor Alexei Smirnov announced that two inbound missiles were intercepted by anti-air defenses, but did not specify whether they were the UK-supplied missiles.

'It's bananas:' Toy fruit becomes first zero-g indicator to fly on SpaceX Starship

An artificial banana floated peacefully in the microgravity environment of outer space on Tuesday (Nov. 19).

No longer needing its attached tethers, it just hung there, suspended in the bay of its steel spacecraft's otherwise empty cargo hold.

The fake-but-full-size fruit made history as the first zero-gravity indicator to fly on a SpaceX Starship.

"Bananas have been used for quick visual comparisons for quite some time, and our teammates thought it was time to bring the venerated yellow fruit to Starship," said Kate Tice, a quality engineering manager at SpaceX and co-host of the company's live launch webcast.

"Today, we're flying Starship's first-ever physical payload, which is, as you might have guessed, a banana."

A camera mounted in Starship's payload bay revealed the toy banana held by cables tied to its top and bottom.

More than just a visual signal that Starship had reached space on its suborbital trajectory, the banana was also a stand-in for gaining the government's approval to begin launching more purposeful payloads on future Starship flights.

"You can see our stuffed banana payload, which is doubling as today's zero gravity or zero-g indicator.

And while this payload will remain inside the vehicle at all times and will not be deployed today, it did give us a chance to do a test run of payload approval processes with the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration], and that's something that we're hoping to do next year if we start flying our first Starlink satellites on Starship," said Tice. "Godspeed, banana."

Though hard to see on the in-flight views, if the banana aboard Starship matched the toy that Tice and her co-host, SpaceX manufacturing engineer manager Jessica Anderson, had with them and which are now available to pre-order for $30 through SpaceX's online shop, the 8-inch-long (20 centimeters) yellow fruit has printed on it "(For Scale)."

It also bears SpaceX's mission patch for Tuesday's test flight, which is a parody of the blue decal found on Dole bananas.

The banana theme extended to the exterior of Starship as well. Affixed to either side of the 165-foot-tall (50 meters) spacecraft were 4-foot-tall (1.2 m) stickers of a pixelated cartoon banana holding an actual-size banana (for scale).

"A single banana is about 1/247 of Starship," read the description on SpaceX's website.

The scale includes Super Heavy, Starship's 232-foot-tall (71 m) booster.

Fortunately, Tuesday's test flight — the sixth in SpaceX's series proving Starship is ready to fly to the moon and Mars — did not go bananas.

The mission achieved all of its main objectives, including demonstrating that Starship could relight its Raptor rocket engines once in space, a requirement for entering orbit on future launches.

The mission lifted off from SpaceX's Starbase launch facility in south Texas as scheduled at 4:00 p.m. CST (5:00 p.m. EST or 2200 GMT), setting up Starship's first daytime splashdown in the Indian Ocean about 65 minutes later.

In the interim, Super Heavy successfully made a soft water landing in the Gulf of Mexico, having been waved off from attempting another tower catch at its launch site, as first achieved on the vehicle's fifth test flight in October.

In addition to its in-space engine test, Starship was outfitted with new secondary thermal protection materials and had sections of its heat shield tiles removed where catch-enabling hardware may be installed on subsequent vehicles.

The ship also adopted a higher angle of attack in the final phase of its descent back to Earth, purposefully stressing the limits of its flap control to collect data on future landing profiles.

The flight's "It's Bananas" theme continued two traditions at SpaceX. The company was the first in the U.S. to borrow the Russian custom of flying small toys as zero-g indicators, tracing back to the first human spaceflight in 1961.

Beginning with the first flight by a Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, SpaceX has launched a menagerie of plush dolls on its crewed missions, including a stuffed planet Earth, an Albert Einstein doll and a small but growing pack of toy dogs.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has also made a habit of choosing "odd" items to be the first cargo to fly on each of the company's rockets.

On Falcon 9, the first Dragon to fly to and from Earth orbit carried with it a wheel of Le Brouere cheese, a nod to a Monty Python skit.

On Falcon Heavy, Musk launched his own Tesla Roadster electric car on a trajectory that took it out beyond the orbit of Mars.

Leaked Documents Expose Secret British Military Effort To Prolong Ukraine War

Leaked files show top UK military figures conspired to carry out the Kerch bridge bombing, covertly train “Gladio”-style stay-behind forces in Ukraine, and groom the British public for a drop in living standards caused by the proxy war against Russia.

Emails and internal documents reviewed by The Grayzone reveal details of a cabal of British military and intelligence veterans which plotted to escalate and prolong the Ukraine proxy war “at all costs.” Convened under the direction of the British Ministry of Defense in the immediate aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the cell referred to itself as Project Alchemy. As British leadership sabotaged peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, the cell put forward an array of plans “to keep Ukraine fighting” by imposing “strategic dilemmas, costs and frictions upon Russia.”

The leaks obtained by The Grayzone expose a hidden hand behind Britain’s policy in Ukraine, showing in unusually granular detail how it aimed to engineer a long, grinding war through covert operations that stretched the bounds of legality.

Project Alchemy’s proposed schemes spanned every conceivable field of warfare, from cyber attacks to “discreet operations” to outright terrorism. The secret cell even put forward a plan to “aggressively pursue” and “dismantle” independent media outlets – including The Grayzone – through an aggressive campaign of legal harassment and online censorship, so they “would be forced to close.” The incendiary blueprints were fed to the highest levels of the British state and national security structure, where they were apparently well-received.

Founded by a senior British Ministry of Defence official, Project Alchemy is composed of veteran military and intelligence operatives united by a desire for all-out war between the West and Russia. Some have trained Ukrainian forces in clandestine sabotage tactics.

Members of the national security cabal tacitly acknowledged that their proposed operations stretched the bounds of British law. Thus they suggested that London should be “prepared to creatively use the law” to meet its goals, and even be willing to erase “legal restrictions on UK deniable ops” against Russia.

Some of Project Alchemy’s most extreme recommendations have already been implemented, often with calamitous results. These include the cell’s proposal to strike Crimea’s Kerch Bridge, which prompted a Russian escalation that saw punishing attacks on Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure. Alchemy also envisioned the construction of a secret, Gladio-style army of Ukrainian partisan fighters to carry out assassination, sabotage, and terror missions behind enemy lines.

It appears the British premier, Keir Starmer, fell under the influence of the Project Alchemy cabal soon after his election in July, when he eagerly embraced the role of “wartime prime minister.” After pledging to support Ukraine “as long as it takes,” however, Starmer is quietly backing away from the maximalist policy. In Kiev, Ukrainians are left to ponder how their “friends” in London got them into this mess, and why they can not, or will not get them out of it.

The British spooks who gathered around Project Alchemy reasoned that the longer the proxy war continued, the more Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “credibility at home and abroad drops, and his ability to fight NATO is degraded.” Today, Project Alchemy’s gambit has clearly backfired, as Putin remains popular within Russia, while a crumbling Ukrainian army loses territory by the day despite constant re-arming by the West. But the war planners in London remain staunchly committed to escalation, refusing to shelve their diabolical proposals.

A formidable bomb cyclone is churning off the Western U.S.

The comma-shaped storm is a suped-up mid-latitude cyclone, which is quite different than the tropical cyclones (like hurricanes) that form near the equator and are fueled by extremely warm waters.

Instead, mid-latitude cyclones are much larger (some 900 to over 3,000 miles in diameter) than tropical cyclones, and form near the boundaries of the frigid poles and the warmer air of the mid-latitudes.

These converging air masses create counter-clockwise circulating motions that can induce whirlpool-like movement. Add in the energy from some typical atmospheric instability to the mix (like rising and sinking air), and you've got a robust, spinning storm.

In this case, the storm is experiencing a rapid drop in pressure at its center, which stokes a potent cyclonic flow as winds blow toward the low pressure.

"It's a rapidly intensifying low," Joe Wegman, a National Weather Service meteorologist, told Mashable.

Conditions for a "bomb cyclone," or "bombogenesis," occur when a storm's central pressure drops by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

In this case, meteorologists are measuring pressure drops of seven millibars per hour, which if sustained over six hours, would be an all-time record for an extratropical storm (which is a storm created from the temperature contrast between warm and cold air masses).

"The system is deepening rapidly…possibly record setting!" Jeff Weber, a research meteorologist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, emailed Mashable as he observed the storm's evolution.

The cyclone will have major impacts. There will be high winds and heavy mountain snow in the Northwest.

But, as the images below show, the cyclone is also dragging along an atmospheric river — a formidable band of moisture (sometimes dubbed a "river in the sky") tending to stream over the Pacific Ocean — that will douse Northern California by Wednesday.

That means extreme rain. Some areas of Northern California and Oregon will receive in excess of 12 inches of rain, Weber said.

Although atmospheric rivers are a crucial part of California's water supply, scientists have found that they're becoming more intense, meaning more billion-dollar flooding disasters.

The key factor driving more intense atmospheric rivers is the physics of a warming globe. More heat on the planet means more water vapor in the air.

The resulting deluges are especially amplified in the case of already strong atmospheric rivers, which deliver a colossal amount of water, many times the average flow of water through the vast mouth of the Mississippi River.

For those in California and the Northwest, heed warnings from local officials and the National Weather Service. This storm means business.
