(DLacalle)—Many citizens want more government control of the economy to curb rising prices. It is the worst strategy imaginable. Interventionist governments never reduce consumer prices because they benefit from inflation, dissolving their political spending commitments in a constantly depreciated currency. Inflation is the perfect hidden tax. The government makes the currency less valuable by issuing more units of fiat money, partially dissolves its debt in real terms, collects more taxes, and presents itself as the solution to rising prices with subsidies in an increasingly worthless currency. That is why socialism and hyperinflation go hand in hand.
Socialism rejects human action and economic calculation and sells a false image of a government that can create wealth at will by issuing more units of fiat currency. Obviously, when inflation arrives, the socialist government will use its two favorite tools: propaganda and repression. Propaganda, which accuses stores and businesses of driving up prices, and repression, which occurs when social unrest intensifies and citizens legitimately hold governments accountable for scarcity and high prices, are the two main strategies.
If you want lower prices, you need to give less economic power to the government, not more. Only free markets, competition, and open economies help decrease consumer prices. Many readers might think that we currently have a free market with competitive and open economies, but the reality is that we live in increasingly intervened and overregulated nations where central banks and governments work to perpetuate unsustainable public deficits and debt. Therefore, they continue to print more money, leading many to question why it is getting harder for families to make ends meet, buy a home, or for small businesses to prosper. The government is slowly eating away the currency it issues. They call it “social use of money.”
What is “social use of money”? In essence, it means abandoning one of the main characteristics of money, the reserve of value, to give the government preferential access to credit to finance its commitments. Therefore, the state can announce larger entitlement programs and increase the size of the public sector relative to the economy, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. The state issues more currency, which makes people’s money less valuable. Citizens become more dependent on the state, and they will demand more subsidies paid in the currency the state issues. It is, in essence, a process of control through debt and currency depreciation.
When governments and central banks talk about price stability, it means a two percent annual depreciation of the currency. Aggregate prices rising an average of two percent is hardly price stability because it is measured by the consumer price index, which is a carefully crafted basket of goods and services weighted by the same people who print the money. That is why governments love CPI as a measure of inflation. It fails to fully reflect the erosion of the currency’s purchasing power. This is why the CPI’s basket calculation fluctuates so frequently. Even if it accurately measures, it will underestimate the rise in prices of non-replaceable goods and services by adding them to a basket of things we consume maybe once or twice a year at best. When you put together shelter, food, health, and energy with technology and entertainment, there will always be distortions.
Thus, governments and central banks are never going to defend price stability. If aggregate prices fell, competition soared, and citizens saw their real wages rise and their deposit savings increase in real value, their jobs would disappear.

Milton Barrels Towards Tampa-Area As A Cat. 5 Hurricane

Milton strengthened overnight into a devastating Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds in excess of 160 mph. The National Hurricane Center reported early Wednseday that Milton was located about 300 miles southwest of Tampa, traversing the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico towards the northeast at 14 mph.
"On the forecast track, the center of Milton will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida late tonight or early Thursday morning, and move off the east coast of Florida over the western Atlantic Ocean Thursday afternoon," NHC wrote in an advisory note.
The latest forecast states Milton will make landfall near Sarasota between 0200 ET and 0600 ET Thursday morning as a Category 4 storm.

After completely biffing her 60 Minutes interview (after which the network edited out her word salad), Vice President Kamala Harris has come under fire for accusing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis of "political gamesmanship" after reports emerged that he didn't take her calls ahead of Hurricane Milton.
When asked about the alleged snub, Harris said DeSantis was being selfish and "utterly responsible" for not taking her call.

Why is it still used? The cancer industry focuses on profit over effective treatments.
Take aspirin for example. At low doses, aspirin helps cancer patients. Studies involving one million patients with 18 different cancers showed aspirin reduced mortality by 21%. Sadly, many oncologists and cancer charities are unduly influenced by the pharmaceutical industry and see no value in persuading patients to take aspirin.

Investigative journalist Christopher Rufo discovered an “open conspiracy” between government, NGOs and companies that benefit from cheap labor. The White House has admitted more than 210,000 Haitians through its controversial Humanitarian Parole Program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV). NGOs, non-governmental organizations, provide migrants with resources to assist in travel, housing, income, welfare, medical care, and work. The Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS) Pittsburgh is the most active resettlement NGO in Charleroi.
In 2023, JFCS Pittsburgh reported $12.5 million in revenue, of which $6.15 million came directly from tax funded government grants. Much of the remaining funding came from other nonprofits that also get federal funds, such as a $2.8 million grant from its parent organization, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). Note that Alejandro Mayorkas, the current head of Homeland Security that oversees the borders, was on the board of HIAS.

What's happening at the center of spiral galaxy M106? A swirling disk of stars and gas, M106's appearance is dominated by blue spiral arms and red dust lanes near the nucleus, as shown in the featured image taken from the Kuwaiti desert. The core of M106 glows brightly in radio waves and X-rays where twin jets have been found running the length of the galaxy. An unusual central glow makes M106 one of the closest examples of the Seyfert class of galaxies, where vast amounts of glowing gas are thought to be falling into a central massive black hole. M106, also designated NGC 4258, is a relatively close 23.5 million light years away, spans 60 thousand light years across, and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici).

Dragon's-eye view: Astronaut captures amazing shots of Hurricane Milton from space
October 8, 2024
NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick has given us dramatic, Dragon's-eye views of Hurricane Milton churning its way toward landfall.
Dominick posted a timelapse video on X (formerly Twitter) today, showing Hurricane Milton through the window of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule Endeavour, which is docked to the International Space Station (ISS).
Endeavour is flying SpaceX's Crew-8 mission for NASA; in early March, the capsule carried Dominick to the orbiting lab along with fellow NASA astronauts Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps, as well as Alexander Grebenkin of Russia's space agency Roscosmos.
Crew-8 is winding down. It was supposed to return to Earth on Monday (Oct. 7), in fact, but Hurricane Milton has delayed the homecoming.
The storm is powering its way through the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, roiling up the waters of Endeavour's planned splashdown zone.
As a result, NASA and SpaceX have pushed Crew-8's planned undocking to Sunday (Oct. 13) at the earliest.
Milton is currently a Category 4 hurricane, the second-most powerful type.
It's expected to make landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast, near Tampa and St. Petersburg, late Wednesday (Oct. 9) as a Category 3 storm, according to The Associated Press.
Milton will then continue moving east across Florida, likely affecting the state's Atlantic coast as well.
The storm has already forced NASA to stand down from the planned Thursday (Oct. 10) launch of the $5 billion Europa Clipper mission from Florida's Kennedy Space Center.
A new target date will be announced after the storm passes. Endeavour isn't the only SpaceX capsule docked to the ISS at the moment.
The Crew Dragon spacecraft Freedom arrived on Sept. 29, flying the company's Crew-9 mission for NASA.
Freedom is visible in Dominick's footage, partially blocking the amazing view of Earth from Endeavour's window.

The International Space Station offers a unique microgravity environment where cells outside the human body behave similarly to how they do inside the human body.
Tissue chips are small devices containing living cells that mimic complex functions of specific human tissues and organs.
Researchers can run experiments using tissue chips aboard space station to understand disease progression and provide faster and safer alternatives for preparing medicine for clinical trials.
Researchers placed engineered heart tissues on tissue chips sent to study how microgravity impacts cardiac functions in space.
Data collected by the chips showed these heart tissues experienced impaired contractions, subcellular structural changes, and increased stress, which can lead to tissue damage and disease.
Previous studies conducted on human subjects have displayed similar outcomes. In the future, engineered heart tissues could accurately model the effects of spaceflight on cardiac function.
Another investigation used muscle-on-a-chip technology to evaluate whether engineered muscle tissues can mimic the characteristics of reduced muscle regeneration in microgravity.
Researchers found that engineered muscle-on-a-chip platforms are viable for studying muscle-related bioprocesses in space.
In addition, samples treated with drugs known to stimulate muscle regeneration showed partial prevention of the effects of microgravity.
These results demonstrate that muscle-on-chip can also be used to study and identify drugs that may prevent muscle decline in space and age-related muscle decline on Earth.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, preview the agency’s new Earth Information Center exhibit on Monday, Oct. 8, 2024.
This new exhibit is the Earth Information Center’s second physical location.
The exhibit at the Smithsonian includes a 32-foot-long, 12-foot-high video wall displaying Earth science data visualizations and videos, interpretive panels showing Earth’s connected systems, information on our changing world, and an overview of how NASA and the Smithsonian study our home planet.
It opens to the public Tuesday, Oct. 8, and will remain on display through 2028.

NASA Welcomes Dominican Republic as 44th Artemis Accords Signatory

The Dominican Republic is the latest nation to sign the Artemis Accords and joins 43 other countries in a commitment to advancing principles for the safe, transparent, and responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond with NASA.
“NASA is proud to welcome the Dominican Republic signing of the Artemis Accords as we expand the peaceful exploration of space to all nations,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
“The Dominican Republic has made important strides toward a shared future in space and is now helping guide space exploration for the Artemis Generation.”
Sonia Guzmán, ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of the country on Oct. 4.
The country also will confirm its participation in a high-level meeting of Artemis Accords signatories taking place Monday, Oct. 14, during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, where furthering implementation of the principles will be discussed.
“This marks a historic step in our commitment to international collaboration in space exploration,” said Guzmán.
“This is not just a scientific or technological milestone – it represents a future where the Dominican Republic contributes to the shared goals of peace, sustainability, and innovation beyond our planet.
By joining the global effort to explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond, we are also expanding the opportunities particularly for our young Dominicans in science, education, and economic development.”
In 2020, the United States and seven other nations were the first to sign the Artemis Accords, which identified an early set of principles promoting the beneficial use of space for humanity.
The accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other agreements including the Registration Convention, the Rescue and Return Agreement, as well as best practices and norms of responsible behavior that NASA and its partners have supported, including the public release of scientific data.
The commitments of the Artemis Accords and efforts by the signatories to advance implementation of these principles support the safe and sustainable exploration of space.
More countries are expected to sign in the coming weeks and months.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seemed to confirm on Tuesday evening that Israel had successfully assassinated projected new Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine, who was targeted in an airstrike in Beirut last Thursday, and claimed Israel has also killed the next in line for the job.
In an English-language video message addressed to the Lebanese public, Netanyahu said that Israel has “degraded Hezbollah’s capabilities; we took out thousands of terrorists, including [longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah himself, and Nasrallah’s replacement, and his replacement’s replacement.”
“Today, Hezbollah is weaker than it has been in many, many years,” said the premier.
Netanyahu did not identify by name any of the successors he said had been killed, although Safieddine had been widely considered to be next in line for the position of secretary-general. Hezbollah has not publicly confirmed his death, and the IDF spokesman declined Tuesday evening to conclusively say that Safieddine had been killed.
“We struck Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Beirut… this is the headquarters of the head of the intelligence division, Abu Abdullah Mortada,” IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in response to a question from a reporter at a press conference. “With him, we know that Hashem Safieddine was there. The results of this strike are still being looked into, Hezbollah is trying to hide the details. When we know, we will update the public.”
Israel killed Nasrallah, who had led the terror group since 1992, in an airstrike on Beirut on September 27, sending shockwaves across the region. Late on October 3, Israel carried out a heavy bombing in Beirut said to target Safieddine, who was the head of the Hezbollah executive council, overseeing the group’s political affairs, and was presumed to be Nasrallah’s successor.
Safieddine, whom the US State Department designated as a terrorist in 2017, is a cousin of Nasrallahand, like him, is a cleric who wears the black turban denoting ostensible descent from Islam’s Prophet Mohammed. Safieddine assumed a prominent role speaking for Hezbollah during the past year, addressing funerals and other events that Nasrallah had long avoided for security reasons.
He was the first Hezbollah official to speak in public after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, telling a rally in Beirut’s southern suburbs on October 8, 2023, that the group’s “guns and our rockets are with you. Everything we have is with you.”
Hailing from a prominent Lebanese Shiite family, Safieddine was born in the country’s predominantly Shiite south. He studied at religious seminaries in the Iranian city of Qom before returning to Lebanon in the 1990s to assume leadership responsibilities in the group.His son, Rida, is married to the daughter of the late Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force until he was killed by a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020. His brother Abdullah serves as Hezbollah’s representative in Tehran.
The purported loss of Nasrallah’s rumored successor would be another blow to Hezbollah and its patron Iran, after Israeli strikes in the past few weeks have decimated the terror group’s leadership.
Earlier Tuesday, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that Safieddine was likely killed in last week’s strike in Beirut.
“Hezbollah is an organization without a leader, Nasrallah was eliminated, his replacement was probably also eliminated,” said Gallant during a visit to the IDF Northern Command, adding that Hezbollah’s firepower capabilities have also taken a heavy blow.
“This has a dramatic effect on everything that happens. There is no one to make decisions, no one to act,” the defense minister added. “The actions we are taking are being observed all over the Middle East. When the smoke in Lebanon clears, they will realize in Iran that they have lost their most valuable asset, which is Hezbollah.”

In his video message on Tuesday night, Netanyahu urged Lebanese citizens to take the country back from Hezbollah control.
“You, the Lebanese people, you stand at a significant crossroads. It is your choice,” he said. Lebanese citizens “can now take back your country. You can return it to a path of peace and prosperity.”
If not, Netanyahu added, “Hezbollah will continue to try to fight Israel from densely populated areas at your expense.”
The prime minister saidthe Lebanese people “deserve to restore Lebanon to its days of tranquility; you deserve a Lebanon that is different… Don’t let these terrorists destroy your future any more than they’ve already done.”
He said the people of Lebanon “have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza. It doesn’t have to be that way… Free your country from Hezbollah so that your country can prosper again, so that future generations of Lebanese and Israeli children will know neither war nor bloodshed, but will finally live together in peace.”
Earlier Tuesday, Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem, one of the last surviving members of the group’s top leadership, claimed that “our capabilities are fine and our fighters are deployed along the frontlines.”
Qassem also claimed that Hezbollah supports efforts by Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, an ally of the group, to secure a ceasefire in the fighting, which has escalated in recent weeks.
According to a Channel 12 report on Tuesday citing unnamed sources in Beirut, Iran is pushing Hezbollah to seek out a ceasefire deal in order to “cut its losses” after a long list of top officials in the group have been killed in recent weeks.
Visiting Beirut on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran backs efforts for a ceasefire in Lebanon on the condition it would be backed by Hezbollah and be simultaneous with a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday that Qassem’s public backing of ceasefire efforts shows that Hezbollah is “on the back foot and is getting battered,” leading the group to “change their tune.”
A year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalated significantly last month, triggered by a coordinated explosion across Lebanon of pagers and walkie-talkies in an attack widely attributed to but not claimed by Israel.
Iranian television on Monday broadcast footage of Hezbollah members wounded in the pager attack visiting the Imam Reza shrine in Iran’s Mashhad, the world’s largest mosque.
The wounds suffered by the operatives in the attack were highlighted in the footage, with close-up shots of bandages covering what appear to be missing fingers and other injuries.

REC Solar, a Duke Energy-owned company, and Hawaiian Electric Company broke ground on a 20-MW fixed-tilt solar facility, located at the U.S. Navy’s Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam West Loch Annex. Once completed, the West Loch solar farm will produce the lowest-cost renewable energy in the state at less than 8 cents per kilowatt-hour.
REC Solar will be building the 80,760-panel solar facility, the first grid-scale solar project to be owned and operated by Hawaiian Electric. Over its expected 25-year lifespan, the solar farm will save Hawaiian Electric customers approximately $109 million, reducing the utility’s use of imported oil by 76,000 barrels annually. The facility will feed into the island’s electric grid and serve all customers on Oʻahu.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and MAUNA KEA, Hawaii – Duke Energy’s REC Solar and W. M. Keck Observatory have completed the world’s largest commercial solar system installed at the record-breaking altitude of 13,600 feet.
The rooftop solar project – located near the summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii – will reduce Keck Observatory’s carbon footprint and lower its cost of energy.

if you do away with 'green credits' does it save anyone any money?
isn't it just about money laundering?
by the time 25 years rolls around 109 milliion won't be very much money.
so basically it enriches a lot of fat cats who will get suddenly rich, sell the 'green credits' and then bail and sell it off.
it's a boon doggle. It's always a boon doggle. It's always less expensive to use a diesel or gas generator. and on hail storm or wind storm will rip it up and make it useless.
