On this episode, I’m lucky enough to sit down with a veteran NASA astronaut who is about to launch to the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Don Pettit is set to fly on the Soyuz MS-26 mission to station where he’ll stay for six months alongside the crew of Expedition 72. He will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner. This will be Pettit’s fourth flight assignment of his astronaut career.

Pettit was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1996. He’s a native of Silverton, Oregon, and he holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State University and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Arizona. And prior to his career with NASA, Pettit worked as a staff scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. And now that’s just a glimpse into the wealth of Don Pettit’s spaceflight career, which didn’t even touch on his notable in-space inventions, amazing astrophotography and fun, but educational content. And lucky enough for us here on Earth, he’s heading back to station. Luna’s mother said her father was a “Christian that embraced the Messianic faith.”

“He eventually got clean and started attending a messianic Jewish church in Orange County. He brought Anna to services and she buried him to Jewish customs,” Monica Luna wrote in a text.

However, three members of Luna’s extended family said that her father was Catholic, and that they were not aware of him practicing any form of Judaism while Luna was growing up.

George Mayerhofer’s father, Heinrich Mayerhofer, immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1954 and identified as Roman Catholic, according to an immigration record reviewed by The Post.

According to several family members, Heinrich Mayerhofer, who died in 2003, served in the armed forces of Nazi Germany when he was a teenager in the 1940s.

One of his sons, Edward Mayerhofer — Luna’s uncle — provided The Post what he said was a portrait of Heinrich Mayerhofer dressed in a uniform as a young soldier in Germany. Experts from the Simon Wiesenthal Center who reviewed the photo confirmed the uniform was consistent with that of a member of the Wehrmacht, which was the armed forces of Nazi Germany.

Jolanta Mayerhofer, Edward’s wife, said Heinrich Mayerhofer — who went by Henry — told her he had no choice but to serve the Nazi regime during the war.

“It hurt for him to talk about it,” she said. “He said, ‘You getting the letter, you need to show up, otherwise your life is over. … He did not like it, but that’s what life was.”

Monica Luna said she had never heard that Luna’s grandfather had Nazi ties. She noted that Luna is estranged from Edward Mayerhofer, who is the brother of Luna’s father and publicly raised inconsistencies in Luna’s biography on social media during her first bid for Congress. In response, Luna filed a request for a stalking injunction against him in 2020.

Hubble Reaches a Lonely Light in the Dark

A splatter of stars glows faintly at almost 3 million light-years away in this new image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Known as the Tucana Dwarf for lying in the constellation Tucana, this dwarf galaxy contains a loose bundle of aging stars at the far edge of the Local Group, an aggregation of galaxies including our Milky Way, bound together by gravity.

The Tucana Dwarf was discovered in 1990 by R.J. Lavery, the same year Hubble launched.

What makes the Tucana Dwarf distinct from other dwarf galaxies comes in two parts: its classification, and its isolation.

As a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, it is much smaller and less luminous than most other dwarf galaxies.

Dust is sparse and the stellar population skews towards the older range, giving them a dimmer look.

Additionally, the Tucana Dwarf lies about 3.6 million light-years from the Local Group’s center of mass, far from the Milky Way and other galaxies.

It is only one of two dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group to be this remote, making astronomers theorize that a close encounter with a larger galactic neighbor called Andromeda slingshotted it into the distance about 11 billion years ago.

Having such pristine properties enables scientists to use the Tucana Dwarf as a cosmic fossil.

Dwarf galaxies could be the early ingredients for larger galaxies, and with older stars residing in such an isolated environment, analyzing them can help trace galaxy formation back to the dawn of time.

For that reason, Hubble reached far across the Local Group using the capabilities of the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 to meet this distant, lonely galaxy.

Examining its structure, composition, and star formation history sheds light on the epoch of reionization, when the first stars and galaxies arose from the dark billions of years ago.

Labour may be plotting a devastating plan to make millions tax prisoners in their own homes

Political outriders are laying the ground for a new assault on property

This is the point of maximum danger for anybody who owns property in Britain. The Labour government is desperate for cash, and will never be as powerful as it is today. Rachel Reeves is expected to raise inheritance and capital gains taxes, but she is being urged by a bevy of influential voices to go even further, and to impose Britain’s first annual wealth tax on unsuspecting homeowners. This would be a calamity, the most explosive assault on private property since the 1940s, and must be opposed by all right-thinking people.

There has long been an influential body of opinion across the political spectrum that maintains that residential property isn’t taxed enough. Such people now believe that this is their moment, their once in 50 years opportunity to revolutionise Britain.

They are desperate to whack “rentiers”, to hammer “unearned” wealth and “landlordism”, to penalise “unfair windfalls” from rising house prices, to wipe out second home-owners, all in the aid of renters and “working people” (who, apparently, are defined as never aspiring to own anything). They dream of a Lloyd George-style “People’s Budget” for the 21st century; unlike in 1909, prosperous Middle England would be the principal target for punishment, not just large landowners.

The policy could take the form of a revaluation of council tax bands to clobber millions in the South, London and gentrified areas, or the replacement of council tax and stamp duty by a proportional, graduated annual levy on the value of all homes (forcing many to pay £10,000, £20,000 or more a year), or a “mansion” tax on homes deemed expensive, or a “garden tax” on land values.

The status quo is broken, but all of these “solutions” would be worse. Infused by flawed classical, Marxist or Georgist economics that claim, without a shred of evidence, that taxing property is necessarily less damaging than taxing income or consumption, they would ruin Britain’s residual attractiveness to global capital and talent.

The total value of all UK homes is £8.7 trillion; as if by magic, confiscating just 1 per cent of this wealth annually would exactly eliminate Britain’s budget deficit, expected at £87 billion for this year. The coincidence is freakish, especially given the dire fiscal context. The Tories turned on the spending taps, to no avail, in their last few months, and since then Labour have awarded scandalously high pay rises to their public sector cronies. Day-to-day central government spending surged 5 per cent between April and July; tax receipts “are, if anything, slightly behind” predictions, the Institute for Fiscal Studies notes, despite stronger economic growth than in other European countries. Borrowing is higher than forecast.

As if on cue, a series of articles and pamphlets have made the case for a radical “reform” of property taxation. Writing in the Financial Times, Charles Goodhart, a brilliant former central banker whose lectures at LSE I very much enjoyed in 1996-97, makes a sober case for a land value tax; he even believes it could raise enough to replace income tax. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has ridiculed council tax bands based on home values “when Mikhail Gorbachev was president of the Soviet Union and Chesney Hawkes topped the charts”.

Tim Leunig, economist at Onward and a former adviser to Rishi Sunak, wants to replace council tax by a 0.44 per cent levy on homes worth up to £500,000, with a minimum payment. He wants stamp duty to be replaced by a 0.54 per cent annual tax on homes worth above £500,000, with an extra 0.28 per cent supplement on values over £1 million. Welsh Labour, which is revaluing council tax bands, is keen to see its policy adopted by Reeves.

Labour last plotted to wage a war on wealth 50 years ago; the seminal text is A Wealth Tax Abandoned: The role of the UK Treasury 1974-6 by Howard Glennerster. By 1964, a Labour internal report came out “in favour of an annual Wealth Tax”, influenced by the Left-wing economist Nicholas Kaldor.

The party introduced a tax on capital gains in 1965, but soon wished to go further. Its 1974 manifesto was terrifying in its socialist honesty: “We shall introduce an annual Wealth Tax on the rich; bring in a new tax on major transfers of personal wealth; heavily tax speculation in property – including a new tax on property companies.” In more moderate form, all three of these ideas are being discussed again by commentators today, including the concept of a “gift tax”, higher CGT on buy-to-let and of course the various annual property levy ideas.

The first law of taxation is that taxes are inevitably introduced at a low, manageable level, often on a “temporary basis”, keeping the useful idiots on side, but are soon jacked up. Inheritance tax in its modern form was just 7.5 per cent when it was introduced in 1894; it had been hiked to 40 per cent in 1930, 65 per cent after the war and a top rate of 75 per cent in 1949. Does anybody really believe that an annual property tax would stay at 0.5 per cent or so? It would soon turn into a historic exercise in expropriation.

The second iron law of taxation is that “wet” taxes – on income, on spending – are better than “dry” taxes – on existing wealth. The former are better aligned with people’s ability to pay. Many pensioners are asset-rich but cash-poor. They would find it impossible to pay a new wealth tax, and would be forced to sell. Some people would end up paying more than 100 per cent of their income in tax as a result of quadruple or quintuple taxation. What is left of the City would shrivel; several European countries were forced to abandon their wealth taxes after massive capital outflows. In America, property taxes lead to social segregation: those on low incomes cannot afford to live in rich areas, even if they have paid off their mortgage.

Most important of all, wealth taxes would dramatically change our relationship with the state. Freehold ownership would be effectively abolished; we would all become leaseholders, paying a fee for the privilege to stay in our homes, with the state the ultimate landlord. An Englishman or woman’s home would no longer be their castle. Reeves has tough decisions to make, but she mustn’t listen to those calling for the legalised plunder that are wealth taxes.

Hostage crisis at Russian prison

A number of people have reportedly been killed and injured during a riot at a penitentiary facility in Volgograd Region

Inmates at a Russian prison have taken several hostages, the national prison service reported on Friday.

The incident occurred during a visit by a disciplinary commission to the facility in Volgograd Region, in the south of Russia, the report said.

Governor Andrey Bocharov has confirmed that four prison employees were hospitalized following the attack. Regional medics are on standby to respond to further casualties, including by airlifting patients, if necessary, the official said.

An operation to rescue the hostages is being prepared, officials said. Three or four inmates appear to be holding them, according to media reports.

The prison is located near the town of Surovikino, some 850km south of Moscow. It accommodates male convicts and has a capacity of over 1,200.

Unverified media reports claim that one of the hostage-takers had been convicted of terrorism offenses, and that he and his group had declared allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

In their communications, the criminals reportedly described their riot as revenge for “our brothers”– other IS supporters held in Russian custody. The news outlet claimed that they specifically named the perpetrators of the massacre at Crocus City Hall in March.

There may be as many as three fatalities, according to the reports, which cited footage purportedly recorded inside the prison. This appears to show a man in prison clothes armed with a knife, and motionless bodies in guard uniforms lying on a blood-covered floor.

A prison warden is understood to be receiving treatment in an intensive care unit after being seriously injured during the altercation.

The perpetrators have reportedly demanded a ransom of $2 million in cash and a helicopter to escape the facility in exchange for the remaining hostages’ lives.

Last month, a hostage crisis involving self-proclaimed IS supporters unfolded at a prison in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don. The perpetrators were killed by special forces during a rescue operation.

Crackdown on Ukraine’s largest church is ‘full-fledged Satanism’ – Medvedev

Vladimir Zelensky and his Western backers are responsible for the suppression, the former Russian president has said

Kiev’s Western backers are supporting its “satanic” crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church(UOC), former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev claimed on Friday.

On Tuesday, theUkrainian parliament passed a law that prohibits “Russia-linked” religious organizations. The self-governed UOC, which has historical and spiritual ties with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), is understood to be the primary target of the legislation. Medvedev, who serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, said he holds Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky accountable for the crackdown.

Pyotr Poroshenko, Zelensky’s predecessor, caused a major religious schism in Ukraine when he orchestrated the creation of the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine in late 2018 as part of his failed reelection campaign, Medvedev pointed out.Under Zelensky, however, “the destruction of the Orthodox faith in Ukraine and the persecution of Christians for their faith started,” culminating in the new law, the former Russian leader argued.

Zelensky “has no religious identity” and the crackdown is “full-fledged Satanism” supported by people in his government, Medvedev alleged. “The civilized West” backed both Poroshenko’s ploy and the ongoing persecution “to inflict maximum damage to Russia and its citizens,” he added.

Ukraine “will be destroyed, like Sodom and Gomorrah were, and the demons will inevitably fall,” Medvedev said, referring to the Old Testament story of two cities obliterated by divine intervention for their wickedness. He added a biblical quote describing the Jewish conquest of Canaan and the punishment that Joshua exacted on the leaders of conquered tribes.

Viktor Elensky, the head of the Ukrainian service for ethnic policy and freedom of conscience, claimed on Thursday that =•the new law “has the legitimate goal of stopping the subversive activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.” Kiev has no intention of forcing clerics and the faithful to join any other denomination, but if the UOC wishes to exist, it has to abide by the new rules and disavow any ties with Moscow, the official added.==

Clement, the UOC bishop who serves as the spokesman for the church, wondered if schismatic leaders would have to overcome bureaucratic barriers to prove their loyalty. Among other things, the law demands public affirmation by Ukrainian clerics that they have cut all ties with the Russian church.

The UOC will “keep living as a true church recognized by the majority of practicing Ukrainian believers and the world’s independent Orthodox churches,”he told the media. Any attempt to ban it will merely tarnish the reputation of the people pushing for it, Clement argued.

NASA’s EXCITE Mission Prepared for Scientific Balloon Flight

Scientists and engineers are ready to fly an infrared mission called EXCITE (EXoplanet Climate Infrared TElescope) to the edge of space.

EXCITE is designed to study atmospheres around exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system, during circumpolar long-duration scientific balloon flights.

But first, it must complete a test flight during NASA’s fall 2024 scientific ballooning campaign from Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

“EXCITE can give us a three-dimensional picture of a planet’s atmosphere and temperature by collecting data the whole time the world orbits its star,” said Peter Nagler, the mission’s principal investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Only a handful of these types of measurements have been done before.

They require a very stable telescope in a position to track a planet for several days at a time.”

EXCITE will study hot Jupiters, giant gas exoplanets that complete an orbit once every one to two days and have temperatures in the thousands of degrees.

The worlds are tidally locked, which means the same side always faces the star.

The telescope will observe how heat is distributed across the planet, from the scalding hemisphere facing the star to the relatively cooler nightside.

It will also determine how molecules in a world’s atmosphere absorb and emit light over the entire orbit, a process called phase-resolved spectroscopy.

Not only can this data reveal the presence of compounds — like water, methane, carbon dioxide, and others — but also how they circulate globally as the planet orbits its star.

NASA’s Hubble, James Webb, and retired Spitzer space telescopes have collected a handful of these measurements between them.

In 2014, for example, Hubble and Spitzer observed an exoplanet called WASP-43 b. To collect data over the world’s 22-hour day, scientists needed 60 hours of Hubble time and 46 hours from Spitzer.

Resource-intensive studies like this on space-based observatories are difficult.

Time is a limited resource, and studies must compete with hundreds of other requests for that time.

“During its first science flight, EXCITE aims to fly for over a dozen days from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility’s site in Antarctica,” said Kyle Helson, an EXCITE team member and a research scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and NASA Goddard.

“And at the pole, the stars we’ll study don’t set, so our observations won’t be interrupted.

We hope that the mission will effectively double the number of phase-resolved spectra available to the science community.”

EXCITE will fly to about 132,000 feet (40 kilometers) via a scientific balloon filled with helium. That takes it above 99.5% of Earth’s atmosphere.

At that altitude, the telescope will be able to observe multiple infrared wavelengths with little interference.

“The telescope collects the infrared light and beams it into the spectrometer, where it kind of goes through a little obstacle course,” said Lee Bernard, an EXCITE team member and a graduate research assistant at Arizona State University in Tempe.

“It bounces off mirrors and through a prism before reaching the detector. Everything must be aligned very precisely — just a few millimeters off center and the light won’t make it.”

The spectrometer rests inside a vessel called a cryostat situated behind the telescope. The cryostat cools the spectrometer’s detector — once a flight candidate from Webb'sNIRSpec (Near InfraRed Spectrograph)— to about 350 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (minus 210 degrees Celsius) so it can measure tiny intensity changes in the infrared light.

The entire telescope and cryostat assembly rests in a rowboat-shaped base where it can rotate along three axes to maintain stable pointing down to 50 milliarcseconds.

That’s like holding a steady gaze on a U.S. quarter coin from 65 miles away.

“Several different institutions contributed to EXCITE’s subsystems,” said Tim Rehm, an EXCITE team member and a graduate research assistant at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

“It’s great to see them all assembled and working together. We’re excited to do this test flight, and we’re looking forward to all the future science flights we hope to have.”

The EXCITE instrument was primarily built by NASA Goddard, Brown, Arizona State University, and StarSpec Technologies in Ontario, with additional support from collaborators in the U.S., Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

As the Indian-turned-Black woman addressed an audience of sycophants at the DNC last night, General Smith at Camp Pendleton received a threatening email presumably written by Harris or her fawning minions. The message, a source in the general’s office told Real Raw News, included an ominous ultimatum: surrender the nuclear launch codes to the nation’s nuclear triad or “watch the children suffer.”

The email’s header showed the author was Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs Naz Durakoğlu—one of the myriad non-Americans serving illegitimate pResident Biden—but the garrulous prose, replete with verbose legalese, matched papers Harris had written while attending UC Berkley Law and during her stint as the 32nd Attorney General of California. Our source said Gen. Smith is 97% certain Harris authored the infernal letter.

In it, she referred to herself in the third person, writing, “President Kamala Harris herein command the receiving party, General Eric M. Smith, USMC, to surrender the codes and apparatus governing the launch of the United States’ nuclear arsenal, or risk consequences hereinafter. Former President and insurrectionist Donald Trump illegally and criminally gave authority over the abovementioned to General David H. Berger, USMC, Rtd., who, upon his retirement, passed the abovementioned to Gen. Eric M. Smith. The abovementioned is stolen government property, and President Harris insists upon its return, lest her ability to respond to foreign threats be retarded.”

It went on: “Failure to comply within 30 days of this letter will carry the most dire consequences. If you think the country’s children are safe, think again. Return what belongs to President Harris. This is your first and only warning. Return what’s ours or watch them suffer.”

As reported by RRN and other alternative media outlets, President Donald J. Trump evoked the Insurrection Act prior to leaving D.C. in Jan 2021, entrusting Gen. Berger (and later Smith) with our nuclear deterrent. In his wisdom, Trump rightly feared that if the Biden regime controlled the nukes, it would, by accident or intent, provoke nuclear Armageddon.

Harris’ correspondence marks the third time (that we know of) the Deep State has beseeched White Hats to surrender the codes. As reported in March 2022, the criminal Antony Blinken begged Gen. Berger and Trump’s Mar-a-Lago command staff for the launch codes. After Gen. Berger and Trump denied the request, Harris, on March 12, 2022, had a go at trying to reclaim them, telling Gen. Berger, “You know, those codes are ours, not yours, and you need to give President Biden the codes right now or else. We must have those codes, so give them to us right now.”

At the time, Gen. Berger noted that the cackling Harris sounded demented.

Those instances, however, included threats only against White Hats, not our nation’s most valuable assets—our children. The Deep State, our source said, has upped the ante.

“The Deep State’s deeply enmeshed in kidnapping and child trafficking. We’ve brought home a lot of kids they’d kidnapped, but there’s still so many out there. This is a new low even for Harris.
