Fighting for his political life is a familiar, even invigorating role for Joe Biden. He’s been discounted enough times before but to be “pushed out”—his words—after winning every primary and more than enough delegates to secure the nomination, it’s not going to happen, he says. “I’m not going anywhere.”

His family is standing with him, his wife Jilland sister Valerie, who Democrats relied upon to provide wise counsel—not just cheerleading. His son, Hunter, has been seen at the White House so much lately that one well-connected lawyer/lobbyist Democrat dubbed him “the acting chief of staff. He’s the gatekeeper. He’s the one who’s bucking up his dad.”

Hunter is the X factor here, wanting to encourage his father like deceased brother Beau did, and not wanting the stress of his felony convictions to hamper his father. Having Hunter on the scene is not helping Biden politically, but that’s not what this is about. A Democrat who worked for Biden earlier in his career says simply, “Biden stood by him through all the darkest times. This is more of a family thing than a political thing. It has nothing to do with his criminal cases, it’s much more about how the family operates.”’

Biden called into MSNBC to say he’s not going anywhere, and the doubters can challenge him at the Democratic Convention next month. He sounded like the Biden Washington has known for decades—combative and cocky. The family—Jill, Valerie, and Ted Kaufman, the longtime aide who for a short time filled his Senate seat—must be telling him he can do this, that he can beat Trump and embark on a second term.

After the disastrous debate, Jill was holding her husband’s hand and telling him how great he was. “You answered all the questions!” It was so out of kilter with what we had just seen of Biden’s inability to forcefully debate that Jill’s judgment was brought into question. Did she want a second term too much? Was she setting aside any concerns about her husband’s health?

Nancy Reagan was the ultimate protector looking out for husband’s wellbeing. She and others knew that he was faltering before his re-election, but a second term was too important for his legacy to willingly step aside. It was “morning in America,” the theme of his re-election campaign. He won 49 states.

There were lapses. Reagan would forget the name of a Cabinet official and then joke about how he gets to meet new people every day.

The difference between Reagan and Biden, says the Democratic lobbyist, “Reagan had Deaver and Nancy, and the power of the visuals. He never looked bad.” Top aide Mike Deaver elevated photos of Reagan to an art form, filling television screens with imagery that overrode negative commentary from reporters and pundits.

Reagan was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s eight years after leaving the presidency. His son, Ron Reagan, wrote in his 2011 book, My Father at 100: A Memoir, about his concerns that “something beyond mellowing” was happening to his father three years into his first term…

For now, the Biden family’s dedication is helping to keep Biden in the race. He may win this game of chicken, with the congressional Black caucus and Hispanic caucus standing with him. Senator Mark Warner was scheduled to speak Monday evening at the Cosmos Club, a gathering place for elites in Washington. He cancelled after Biden called him out as one of the naysayers.

A convention challenge is likely a fool’s errand. Almost 4,000 delegates are Biden delegates. And they’re not elites. Biden’s message now, he’s running against the party elites and the big donors. The polls haven’t collapsed for him. It’s still the same tight race, just a little tighter.

What just happened in France with the far left soundly beating back a challenge from the far right defied the polls, leaving President Macron, a Biden ally, a little less worse off. The unexpected results are undoubtedly cheering the White House, where Biden is running against the polls and the media—as much as he is against Trump—in his effort to stay in the race and keep his job.

Alaska Natives file lawsuit challenging federal overreach in wake of SCOTUS ‘Chevron' ruling

The lawsuit accuses the BLM of enacting the final rule on the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska without any meaningful engagement with the North Slope Iñupiat, despite unanimous opposition from the elected leaders of the communities.

Alaska Natives are fighting back against the Biden administration’s decision to shut down oil and gas development in northern Alaska, which they say is vital to the prosperity and well being of their communities.

The Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat (VOICE), a nonprofit advocacy group for Native-American communities living on the state’s North Slope, filed a lawsuit Monday against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland over the final BLM’s final rule blocking 13 million acres in their region to oil and gas development.

The lawsuit argues that the rule goes against the Congressional intent of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), which was to increase domestic supplies of oil.

“For over 40 years BLM managed the NPR-A consistent with these Congressional directives, in regular consultation with local stakeholders, and successfully balanced the NPR-A’s primary purpose of furthering oil and gas exploration and development with appropriate conservation and protection measures. Not anymore,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit accuses the BLM of enacting the final rule without any meaningful engagement with the North Slope Iñupiat, despite unanimous opposition from the elected leaders of the communities.

“Our complaint speaks for the North Slope Iñupiat’s voices whom the federal government has chosen to silence, stonewall, and scorn since it blindsided us with its unilateral mandates in September 2023,” said VOICE President Nagruk Harcharek.

The NPR-A is part of ancestral Iñupiat homelands. The reserve is located entirely within the North Slope Borough (NSB), a home-rule government created so that the communities would have a say and benefit from responsible development in the region. The NSB has the authority to tax infrastructure on the North Slope, which provides more than 95% of the communities’ tax revenues.

The decision, according to the complaint, blocks the communities from a vital source of tax revenue that’s contributed to improvements in the quality of life for the NSB. In 1980, the average life expectancy of a person living in the NSB was just 65, which is about the same as Sudan and Iraq today. Today, the average lifespan in the North Slope is about 77 years.

The tax revenues from Alaska’s oil and gas industry have, according to the VOICE’s lawsuit, provided essential public services, including sewer, water, heat, sanitation, schools, clinics, hospitals, wildlife and fisheries management and research, infrastructure, and social and cultural programs. This is in addition to providing jobs and other economic benefits.

Kate Wolgemuth, program and government affairs manager for VOICE, told Just the News the “elders” of these communities lived much harder lives before this infrastructure was constructed. For example, there are no trees in the arctic tundra, so they had to gather driftwood from the coast, which was a key source of heat. They also had to put out their “honey buckets.” These were five-gallon buckets that served as the household toilet.

“I don't think anybody wants to go back to before any of these modern amenities existed. Resources, including time, can be dedicated elsewhere when you don't have to worry about more rudimentary ways of modern amenities,” Wolgemuth said.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of the Supreme Court decision shooting down the “Chevron deference,” which gave wide latitude to federal agencies to make impacting rules where federal law was vague. The high court’s ruling is expected to result in many lawsuits, such as that filed by VOICE, as now judges will be interpreting the law as written by Congress.

Rick Whitbeck, Alaska policy director for Power The Future, an energy advocacy group, told Just the News that the Iñupiat have lived in the region for thousands of years and stewarded those lands well. He said he hopes the courts will allow the Alaskan Natives to plot the best course of action for their people, their culture and their future.

“The announcement [of the lawsuit] is cause for both celebration and aggravation. Celebration because the leaders from the North Slope have stood up for their current and future generations and the opportunities that the NPR-A could provide them. Aggravation because they were forced to take this step due to administrative overreach and a general kowtowing by ‘Team Biden’ to a radical environmental lobby hell-bent on locking up Alaska’s potential,” Whitbeck said.

The Biden administration has claimed to be dedicated to engaging with Native American tribes in its rulemaking process, but the final rule on the NPR-A disregarded input from the Iñpiat, Wolgemuth said. Members of the VOICE had tried for years to get an audience with Haaland to discuss the impacts of the BLM rules, only to have the requests repeatedly declined. Last month, representatives of VOICE were finally granted a meeting with her.

Wolgemuth said that the unwillingness of the BLM to hear and address their concerns factored into their decision to file the lawsuit. “Our last chance to weigh in or influence anything on this NPR-A rule is the judicial branch. Unfortunately, because of the lack of engagement on the executive side, this is the avenue through which we've had to turn,” she said.

President Joe Biden’s campaign has already suffered a major slowdown in donations and officials are bracing for a seismic fundraising hit, with the fallout from a debate nearly two weeks ago taking a sizable toll on operations, according to four sources close to the re-election effort.

“It’s already disastrous,” one of the sources close to Biden’s re-election said of fundraising.

"The money has absolutely shut off" to the Biden campaign, another source close to Biden's re-election said.

Two of the sources said this month is on a path to be down by possibly half — “or much more,” one of them said — from large donors alone. Sources emphasized that the donations were down across the board.

“Donors are negative. They had a call with the president. The call seemed so contrived to people, I don’t think they buy it,” one of the people close to the campaign said, referencing a recent national fundraising call between Biden and donors. “They called on people who were the most loyal, diehard … There were no tough questions for the president."

Initially after the debate, the campaign reported seeing an uptick in donors. But that quickly fell off, according to the sources.

A Biden campaign spokesperson pushed back on the notion that fundraising was down."That’s not accurate," spokesperson Lauren Hitt said. "On grassroots fundraising, the first seven days of July were the best start to the month on the campaign — and many of those were first time donors. On the high dollar side, we’ve had folks max out since the debate, as well."

Hitt did not share how many donors have hit the maximum level of giving allowed under federal law since the debate.

One of the people close to the re-election efforts said earlier this week that the campaign believed major donors who have threatened to jump ship after the debate would come around — if only to avoid helping Trump by sitting out this race. KEK! Dream On!

Biden aides had said privately, “If major donors don’t come along, we’ll do it without them.”

One of the sources said that several unplanned fundraisers were in the early planning stages for the month.

But several people close to the re-election effort on Wednesday were already doubting that, saying they could see evidence of an intensity in concern around Biden's ability to win in November growing.

One Biden donor said he feared the president’s re-election effort is out of touch with reality and may be repeating the delusions of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, leading Biden to dangerously flawed assessments about his standing in the race.

The source said he was struck by the campaign’s outward confidence, as well as Biden’s own, even as publicly available data shows Biden trailing Trump in key states.

The doubts about Biden go beyond his cognitive abilities. The president’s positive talk on polling, for example, in the ABC interview, sounded "actually quite Trumpian,” the donor said, and has caused donors to question where he is getting his information.

“Donors, they are saying, well, wait a minute, which polls is he looking at? Which polls should we be looking at?” he said.

“It’s a broader, ‘Is the group around the president really in touch with what’s going on?’ Are people deluding themselves? And therefore whatever they’re conveying is sort of a reflection of the bubble?” he said.

Some of Biden’s top fundraisers won’t reach out to their lucrative networks because they’re not convinced Biden will be the nominee heading into the convention, despite the president saying he’s staying in the race, according to one of Biden's bundlers.

“You can’t reach out to someone, because someone could say, 'Geez I didn’t know, he has dementia,’” said one of Biden’s top bundlers. “Right now it’s like, someone asks, 'You want to go see a movie?’ And in this case I’m saying ‘I don’t know what f—ing movie is playing.'"

A donor who did max out this month to Biden, Amy Goldman Fowler, explained her reasoning in a statement. “I have been a long-time admirer of the President and continue to support his reelection efforts," she said. "The Biden Administration’s accomplishments are many and they are consequential. I’m proud of what he has been able to do. Yesterday I reiterated my support by making an additional significant contribution to President Biden’s election fund."

Booz Allen Ventures invests in space tech startup Quindar

July 11, 2024

Booz Allen Hamilton, the U.S. defense and intelligence contractor, announced July 11 that its corporate venture capital arm, Booz Allen Ventures, has made a strategic investment in Quindar, an early-stage commercial space technology company.

The investment aims to support Quindar’s platform for automating satellite operations.

Satellite owners use Quindar’s app to analyze, test and operate their constellation, and operate their satellite fleet with minimal human intervention.

Booz Allen launched its corporate venture arm in 2022 and manages a fund of about $100 million.

Founded in 2022 by former OneWeb engineers in Denver, Quindar says its goal is to “democratize space” by providing an IT infrastructure for satellites.

Chris Bogdan, executive vice president at Booz Allen and leader of the firm’s space business, said the investment in Quindar was at the seed stage because “we were confident in Quindar’s solution based on the critical needs our DoD clients are experiencing.”

Bogdan noted that federal clients are increasingly seeking industry help to accelerate innovation and integrate technology to modernize legacy satellite and ground systems.

Nate Hamet, CEO and co-founder of Quindar, said the company is “thrilled to partner with Booz Allen Hamilton in advancing AI-enabled solutions for space management.”

Travis Bales, managing director of Booz Allen Ventures, highlighted the growing need in the space domain to scale and integrate mission areas.

“For the last five years or so, the stacks that support satellite operations have been separated into different stovepipes, such as launch, payload, and operation,” Bales added. “Quindar’s stack enables the future of space support operations for disparate partners and payloads to be controlled through one holistic view.”

Booz Allen Ventures previously invested in early-stage companies developing dual-use technologies, including Latent AI, Synthetaic, Reveal Technology, Credo AI, Hidden Level, Shift5, Hidden Layer, Second Front and Albedo.

Quindar in January announced it closed a $6 million funding round as an extension to a $2.5 million seed round it completed a year ago.

San Francisco Fed president offers no specifics on timing or magnitude of moves. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said Thursday she now supports cutting interest rates.

“With the information we have received today, which includes data on employment, inflation, GDP growth and the outlook for the economy, I see it as likely that some policy adjustments will be warranted,” Daly said in a roundtable with reporters.

Daly wouldn’t comment on the timing of the first cut or how many moves she favored. She said it was important to tell the market where policy was headed and the specifics would depend on future data.

The Fed’s latest formal forecast shows officials are divided between one or two quarter-percentage-point cuts by the end of the year.

The Fed’s interest-rate committee meets again on July 30-31. Daly said that every meeting is a live meeting for a possible move. Daly said she had more information to gather ahead of that meeting. She said she wasn’t calling for an immediate cut.

A TOP Putin crony who was to be a key witness in a major Kremlin corruption scandal has "suddenly" died under mysterious circumstances.

Russian general Magomed Khandayev, 61, was head of the State Expertise Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Khandayev was seen as a key witness in a corruption scandal shrouding the Russian defence ministry amid Putin's illegal war against Ukraine.

His body was flown to Moscow to his home region of Dagestan for burial, according to reports.

The cause of Khandayev’s death has not been specified.

A Russian news outlet said Khandayev had a "close connection with high-ranking officials whose activities have recently attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies."

It added: "[His death] raises questions, especially against the backdrop of recent ‘clean-ups’ among senior leaders of the Ministry of Defence related to corruption scandals.

"The death of the general will certainly become a convenient occasion for those who seek to cover up the traces of corruption schemes in the Ministry of Defence."

"Now that Khandayev, who potentially has important information, can no longer testify, many cases may be closed or reconsidered, thereby avoiding further investigations and possible charges against high-ranking officials."

Khandayev worked under deputy defence minister Timur Ivanov, 48, who was dramatically arrested on suspicion of £9 million corruption schemes - and remains in custody.

The army general was said to have close ties with the sacked defence minister who was publically shamed by Putin for accepting bribes.

Khandayev now joins the string of unexplained deaths of leading Russian figures under mysterious circumstances.

Last month, a prominent female judge was found dead after falling from a Moscow high-rise building.

Natalia Larina, 50, was notorious for handling high-profile political and criminal cases, punishing traitors of the Kremlin.

She had been a criminal judge for more than 15 years - and had a reputation for ruling verdicts on cases against opposition political activists.

In December 2023, Vladimir Egorov, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, plunged to his death from a third-floor window in Moscow.

The 46-year-old Egorov was a wealthy and prominent politician in oil-rich Tobolsk in western Siberia.

Just weeks prior, the deputy editor of Putin's favourite propaganda newspaper was found dead aged only 35.

The body of Anna Tsareva, 35, was discovered at her home in the capital's Bolshoy Tishinsky Lane - nearly a year after the death of her boss Vladimir Sungorkin, 68.

In February the same year, top Russian defence official and key figure in the funding of Putin's illegal war in Ukraine Marina Yankina, 58, also fell 160ft to her death in St Petersburg.

She was head of the financial support department of the Ministry of Defence for the Western Military District, which is closely involved in the dictator’s invasion.

Earlier this year, the chief editor of the warmonger's state-run TV empire was also discovered lifeless after a suspected poisoning.

Zoya Konovalova, 48, who ran a channel operating near the frontlines of Mad Vlad's illegal war, was found alongside her ex-husband.

Chinese commercial rocket firm suffers 4th launch failure

Chinese commercial rocket outfit iSpace suffered a launch failure late Wednesday in a fresh setback for the company.

The four-stage Hyperbola-1 solid rocket lifted off from Jiuquan spaceport in the Gobi Desert at 7:40 p.m. Eastern (2340 UTC) July 10.

State media Xinhua later announced the mission ended in failure.

Beijing-based iSpace later issued a release stating that the rocket’s fourth stage suffered an anomaly.

The company stated the specific reasons for the failure will be announced as soon as possible after detailed investigation and review.

The statement did not reveal the name nor nature of the payloads lost on the flight.

Beijing Interstellar Glory Space Technology Ltd., or iSpace, made history in 2019 as the first privately-funded Chinese company to reach orbit with the solid-fueled Hyperbola-1.

However the rocket suffered three consecutive failures following that feat.

The company recovered with two successful flights in 2023 but now faces a new setback.

The loss could add to concerns over China’s commercial launch industry as it follows Space Pioneer’s recent catastrophic static-fire explosion, which saw a fully-fueled first stage unintentionally launch from the test bench in Gongyi, Henan province.

Commercial space has received increasingly strong backing from China’s central, provincial and city governments.

A number of low Earth orbit communications megaconstellations are expected to provide opportunities for medium and heavy-lift commercial launchers.

iSpace is also looking beyond solid rockets. It launched and landed a test article for its methane-liquid oxygen Hyperbola-3 rocket in November last year.

Despite an already crowded field of contenders, new entrants are still emerging in China’s commercial launch sector.

The latest appears to be Dahang Yueqian, or Cosmoleap, established in February. Cosmoleap released concept art of its planned rocket this week.

The art suggests plans to develop a methalox rocket with nine engines performing a powered descent and to be caught by in a fashion apparently similar to that planned by SpaceX to recover its Starship Superheavy boosters.

More concretely, Chinese firms such as Landspace are planning first launches of reusable methane rockets as soon as 2025.

The firm has already conducted vertical takeoff, vertical landing tests for its stainless Zhuque-3 rocket.

Ukraine Seizes Cargo Ship, Detains Captain for Exporting ‘Looted’ Grain

KYIV, July 11 (Reuters) – Ukraine seized a foreign cargo ship in the Black Sea off its Odesa region and detained the captain on suspicion of helping Moscow export Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied Crimea, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Thursday.

Kyiv has accused Russia of trading stolen Ukrainian grain since the 2022 war began. Ship seizures, however, have been rare and shipping sources said they were concerned about possible retaliation at a critical time in the year as Ukraine grain exports reach a peak.

The vessel repeatedly docked at the Crimean sea port of Sevastopol to pick up agricultural products in 2023-24, the SBU said, describing the loads as “looted.”

Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office in a separate statement identified the vessel as the Cameroon-flagged USKO MFU.

An official with the vessel’s Turkey-based ship manager Iyem Asya told Reuters that the vessel’s current cargo was loaded in Moldova.

“The ship, while under our ownership, did not take any cargoes from Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine and never used Ukrainian ports,” the official said.

“Ukrainian soldiers boarded the ship while it was sailing along the Danube with a Romanian pilot present. They forcibly anchored it on their side of the river. Our lawyers are now pursuing the case.”

Russian forces occupied large parts of Ukraine’s southern agricultural regions in the first year of its invasion and Kyiv has accused Russia of stealing and destroying its grain, as well as trading it.

The SBU said the captain and 12 crew members helped Russia to export Ukrainian grain taken from the occupied south to the Middle East for sale on behalf of Russia.

“The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime and identify other persons involved in the illegal activity,” the SBU said.

In its statement, Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office said that on one of its voyages in November 2023, the USKO MFU loaded over 3,000 metric tons of agricultural products in Sevastopol intended for a Turkish company.

The ship last reported its position on July 8 at anchor near Ukraine’s Reni port along the Danube River, LSEG ship tracking data showed on Thursday.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office said the vessel had been detained after entering Reni waters and then presented with an arrest order.

The captain, a citizen of a South Caucasus country, could face up to five years in prison for violating travel restrictions governing Ukraine’s Russian-occupied territories, the SBU said.

The Odesa hub is crucial to Ukraine’s Black Sea exports that it has revived without Russia’s assent after Moscow quit a UN-brokered deal last summer that had allowed Kyiv to export food during the war with Russia.

Asked if there had been a change in Ukrainian policy, a source in law enforcement told Reuters on Thursday: “This is our policy. This vessel and the captain worked for the occupiers and now he entered the waters controlled by Ukraine. And we had an immediate reaction.”

In 2022, Ukrainian authorities detained a vessel carrying Ukrainian wheat to investigate its alleged Russian owner, court documents showed.

Separately, in 2015 Ukrainian authorities arrested a Turkish-owned cargo ship and detained its captain over a visit it made to Crimea.

1st images from European climate satellite reveal how energy cycles to and from Earth

Scientists now have more information to study how human-driven climate change is impacting our planet, thanks to brand new imagery arriving from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite.

The cloud and aerosol mission launched on May 29, 2024 from Vandenberg Space Force Base on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket; just over a month later, its broadband radiometer instrument managed to produce the first image from the mission. This image, the team says, captures Earth's energy balance — referring to how much energy the planet takes in from solar radiation, and how much thermal radiation is then released from Earth back into space.

As global temperatures are on the rise, the mission is thus crucial.

With EarthCARE in action, scientists should be able to better understand how, precisely, human activities are contributing to an increase of greenhouse gases and how industrial plants, traffic and agricultural practices are also sending aerosols into Earth's atmosphere.

"Of course we have never doubted the EarthCARE broadband radiometer's potential, but here we see, at such an early stage in the mission, that the instrument is working very well and delivering excellent data," Simonetta Cheli, ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programs, said in a statement.

"Each of the satellite's different instruments has an extremely important role to play — and when all of them are working in harmony and the satellite is commissioned, then the scientific community and weather forecasters will have a powerful tool to advance our understanding of Earth’s energy balance, advance climate science and improve weather predictions," Cheli added.

The radiometer is one of four instruments aboard the satellite that highlights how clouds and aerosols play a part in regulating our climate.

Last month, the satellite's cloud profiling radar instrument captured an image that showcased the dynamics and internal structure of clouds, a turning point in studying clouds from space.

"We are thrilled to be able to present this first image, which reveals detail on the internal structure of cloud dynamics over the ocean, east of Japan on 13 June," Takuji Kubota, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Mission Scientist for the cloud profiling radar, said in a separate statement.

"This is the first image of its kind — we have never had this kind of information measured from space before. It is all we hoped for, and more. I believe that the cloud profiling radar will bring various scientific discoveries."

Typically, these types of measurements can only be taken from a cloud radar on the ground or from an aircraft.

The EarthCARE satellite allows for a more uniform scan of the planet, however, providing a three-dimensional view that helps researchers understand climate science unlike ever before.
