Boston community says graphic video of public sex act illustrates routine occurrence

Neighbors say a graphic video of a sex act occurring in public in Boston’s Mass and Cass corridor shows something they’ve seen many times before.

Those who live and work near the city’s open-air drug market told Boston 25 News they’ve tired of witnessing sexual activity, open drug use and other behavior that would be considered illicit elsewhere.

The community group who shared the graphic footage on social media said they did so to prove to public officials what they’re dealing with on a regular basis.

They’re pointing to the reality that kids who pass through the area are witnessing things that no child should see.

“It is happening every day. It is something that’s in our face,” said South End mother Janina Rackard. “My life is changed. My child’s childhood is changed.”

Rackard, whose daughter is finishing her freshman year of high school, said she feels her daughter’s childhood has been tainted by what she’s observed in the community.

“Children are being affected. Children are being hurt,” she said. “Where do we go from here, and when does it get fixed?”

Neighbors and community leaders are worried that quality of life issues are only going to get worse heading into the warmer months.

“This video shows that we have to do something,” said community activist Yahaira Lopez. “People are allowed to do things that they normally cannot do in other communities outside of Boston.”

Boston 25 New reached out to the city of Boston about the community concerns and have not yet heard back.

Former Wichita teacher headed to prison for sexually abusing 7th grade student

A Sedgwick County judge on Thursday sentenced a former Wichita Public Schools middle school teacher to 5 years, 8 months in prison for sexually abusing one of her seventh-grade students in 2018 and 2019.

Christin N. Covel pleaded no contest in February to two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. Authorities have said Covel groomed and molested the then 13-year-old girl in her classroom at Mead Middle School, 2601 E. Skinner, during and after school and on at least one field trip.

She also swapped nearly 10,000 Snapchat messages with the girl, whom she viewed as her lover, according to a probable cause affidavit released by the court.

In one message, Covel appeared to guilt the girl for spending time with a boy, writing: “you spending time with him. Hugging him. Kissing him. Sending him stuff. Recess. Lunch. Classes. Forgetting about me. Wanting him. Not wanting me.”

Covel was arrested last year after the girl talked about the abuse in a therapy session when she was 16, according to the affidavit.

Covel worked at Mead Middle School from 2015 until July 2020. She was teaching at Thomas Edison Preparatory Middle & High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when authorities arrested her in January 2022.

Prosecutors originally charged Covel with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under 14 and one count of unlawful sexual relations. An aggravated indecent liberties conviction could have landed her in prison for life.

Instead, she’ll serve the 68-month sentence and then be subject to lifetime post-release supervision. The prison portion of her sentence can be reduced by up to 15% for good behavior.

Judge Seth Rundle ordered Covel, who now lives in Oklahoma, to surrender to the Sedgwick County Jail by 9 a.m. Monday. She has been free on bond since shortly after her arrest.

Covel’s lawyer had asked Rundle to place her on probation for three years instead of imposing a prison sentence. But the judge refused, saying the prison term was not only an appropriate punishment in this case but would also be a general deterrent for teachers or other adults who might consider abusing a child.

The Mifflinburg Area School Board fired an employee accused of possessing child porn.

Brendan Stepp, an office aide at the school district, was arrested in May for allegedly possessing seven images depicting child sexual abuse material. The school board unanimously approved his termination, retroactive to May 23, at Tuesday night's public meeting.

Stepp, 25, of Susquehanna Avenue, Sunbury, waived his right to a preliminary hearing in front of Sunbury District Judge Michael Toomey on May 30. He is scheduled for a formal arraignment at 9 a.m. June 19 in the Northumberland County Court of Common Pleas.

Troopers said they received a cyber tip in December and executed a search warrant in February at a home on Susquehanna Avenue and allegedly discovered a sexual video on an electronic device.

Troopers spoke with Stepp and allegedly asked him if he knew why they were there, to which Stepp allegedly responded, "yes," according to court documents.

Stepp voluntarily went to the Stonington state police barracks. During an interview, he admitted to receiving, viewing, saving and disseminating child sexual material, according to court documents.

Stepp also allegedly admitted to the images being of individuals under the age of 18 and as young as eight, troopers said.

Stepp is charged with four felony counts of child pornography and three felony counts of dissemination of child pornography. He has been free since May 19 after posting $25,000 cash bail through professional bondsman Stephen Hobbs, of York.

George Orwell's 1984 returned to Portland library after 65 years

A copy of George Orwell's dystopian novel, 1984, has been returned to a US library in Oregon state after 65 years.

In a note enclosed with the book, an 86-year-old man, identified only as WP, said the book should be returned to Multnomah County Library in Portland because of its relevance today.

"After re-reading, I realise that, more than ever, this book should be put back in circulation," the note reads.

The seminal novel explores the themes of totalitarianism and truth.

"I meant to return this book in 1958 when I was about to graduate from [Portland State University], but somehow never got around to doing it," he wrote in the note.

"Sorry to be so tardy. At age 86, I wanted to finally clear my conscience," he said.

The man said revisiting parts of the book had sparked his desire to return it.

"Significant parts are as relevant today as they were 65 years ago," he said, picking out an extract on page 207 in particular.

"Simply add the words internet and social media, and you reading about 2023," he said.

The novel, published in 1949, is set in a world where critical thought is supressed by a totalitarian regime.

Sales of the book soared in the US in 2017 shortly after a senior adviser to Donald Trump, who was president at the time, said the White House was issuing "alternative facts" in a row over the size of the crowd at his inauguration.

Reacting to the book's return, Multnomah County Library said there would be no fine for the late return.
