After the University of Utah announced the discovery on March 23, 1989, scientists around the world tried to replicate the experiment. A team led by Dr. Nathan Lewis at the California Institute of Technology used more sensitive equipment than the Utah team had used, and they found no fusion had taken place. They also found that no neutrons, gamma rays, tritium or helium were emitted, as the Utah team had claimed.

By May, 1989 physicists at a meeting of the American Physical Society in Baltimore, Maryland unleashed a torrent of attacks on Pons and Fleischmann. Dr. Lewis told the 1,800 assembled physicists that "Pons would never answer any of our questions …" Dr. Steven E. Koonin of Caltech described the Utah experiment as the result of "the incompetence and delusion of Pons and Fleischmann."

Why it is not possible

Here, we outline three reasons for why reports of cold fusion cannot be true.

The energetics - for two deuterium nuclei to fuse, they must come within nuclear distances of each other. The Coulomb energy associated with repulsion is then of the order of MeV. Thermal energy scales near room temperature are in contrast on the order of meV. It simply requires a miracle for the Coulomb barrier to breached at room temperatures. Even proponents of cold fusion admit this is a difficult aspect to explain and resort to referring to unknown effects caused by the solid state host.

Lack of neutrons produced - The two nuclear fusion reactions with the largest cross sections for deuterium are [2]:

2D 2D → 3T 1H

2D 2D → 3He n

If fusion does occur, then by the second reaction, neutrons should be produced in large numbers. However, this is not observed. [1]

Lack of gamma rays produced - The final reason also pertains to the products of the reaction. If deuterium nuclei were to fuse, it is expected that most of the energy released should be in the form of gamma rays rather than as heat. There is also no evidence for gamma rays in claims of observations of cold fusion. [1]

Conclusion

The three reasons above are known as the "three miracles" that are required to happen in order to explain the early experiments claiming to observe cold fusion. The only way to get past these problems is to argue that just because we cannot understand something, it does not mean it is not real. Yet, the problem with this is that a real result should be reproducible. Currently, the reproducibility rate of such solid state cold fusion experiments is at a meager 3%. [2] Indeed, while the prospect of cold fusion is undoubtedly attractive, based on all of what we know about nuclear physics, it is likely a fruitless pursuit.

Newly released documents range from presidential communiques with foreign leaders to payroll information for Cuban revolutionaries backed by the CIA and correspondence ordering the payment of bribes.

But to researchers' disappointment, the documents reveal little more than was previously known about Oswald's time in Mexico City prior to the assassination, where he made contact with officials from the Cuban and Soviet embassies.

In a summary sheet following Kennedy's assassination in 1963, a CIA official describes weeks of phone calls they and the Mexican government—then a close ally of the Soviet Union—intercepted that Oswald made during his time in Mexico City to both the Cuban and Soviet embassies seeking visas in an apparent effort to leave the country.

One call Oswald made to the Soviet Embassy aroused suspicion when he asked if there was "anything new" with the individual on the other end of the line—information that was forwarded to officials in Washington, D.C.

However, it did not appear the government took action on it, which agency officials noted in a report published nearly one month after Kennedy's death.

When it was revealed Oswald was the prime suspect, the response within the CIA was explosive.

The documents also reveal longstanding surveillance by CIA officials into Oswald's previous travels abroad to countries like Finland, detailing the agency's knowledge of Oswald to well before his assassination of the president—details that illustrate the intimate advanced knowledge the agency had in the lead-up to Kennedy's death in Dallas.

However, the initial result of the more than 13,000 pages of documents, researchers said, was "not encouraging," noting that many of the documents they had requested either contained many of the redactions they did previously, or were not included in the Thursday release.

The CIA document dump notably included just one document on George Joannides—the CIA's liaison to a 1970s-era commission investigating the assassination who was later revealed to have directed and financed a group of Cuban revolutionaries whose officers had contact with Lee Harvey Oswald in the months prior to Kennedy's assassination.

Meanwhile, the available narrative released Thursday—that Oswald was a known entity—was already a well-known one, and contradicted the official narrative shared by CIA officials in the crafting of the Warren Report. Other facets of the release left researchers wanting. ...

Moving day Citadel billionaire wants home of historic statesman off his $106M property

Billionaire Ken Griffin moved his hedge fund Citadel to Miami and asked the city to remove the former home of William Jennings Bryan from his estate.

He purchased the four-acre waterfront property in Coconut Grove from philanthropist Adrienne Arsht.

Arsht, who is known in Miami for her $30 million contribution to the city’s performing arts center, spent a significant amount renovating the home, which she used as a guest house and for social gatherings.

Villa Serena, the home of the three-time presidential candidate, who served in the House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895 and as the Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, is one of two homes located on the estate Griffin, 54, paid a Miami record $106 million for in September, the Miami Herald reported.

Griffin, who is worth over $31 billion, has a city agency looking into accepting the compound as a donation and relocating it.

This would be like trying to move Mar-a-lago. That isn't going to fit on a flatbed or 100 and if even possible it's far too expensive and the 4th richest guy trying to get some other poor shmuck to pay the freight is "too rich"
