There's a widely circulating new conspiracy theory involving the Beatles, and it connects back to an old one in which Paul McCartney prematurely died and was replaced in the lineup.

This so-called “Satanic panic” comes courtesy of QAnon, the group best known for claiming Donald Trump is fighting a secret world order for humanity’s freedom. Some members believe McCartney's supposed death and the “butcher” album cover (which featured the Beatles surrounded by cuts of animal meat and beheaded baby dolls) proves the band was a psy-ops campaign created and funded by the British government, according to a Rolling Stone investigation.

Noting that QAnon has “floated the idea that JFK Jr. is still alive and suggested that President Biden is actually a robot,” Rolling Stone argued that members “come to these conclusions in much the same way as a ‘60s stoner would have ‘proved’ that Paul was dead: by interpreting images and texts in a way that no reasonable person ever would.”

Examples cited included one member claiming that the Beatles were “financed by the british govt to help create a counter culture w/ rock music & drugs to study it via the tavistock institute,” referring to the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, which explores social science as a solution to modern problems. The member added: “60's counter culture was mostly manufactered.”

The “butcher” image – withdrawn as sleeve art for the 1966 U.S. compilation album Yesterday and Today – was said by one member to prove that “Elite mfs want to normalize pedophilia & child sacrifices,” and the picture represented “the highest level of evil.”

Another member said McCartney's rumored death was only “an entry conspiracy theory. Once you realize how much you’ve been lied to about the Beatles, even if only in small ways where you still think Paul is Paul, it primes you for accepting that much of your culture has been a psy-op and false.” Another asked: “If Paul McCartney is really dead, and ‘They’ deceived people back in the late ‘60s, can you imagine what ‘They’ can do now???”

John Lennon’s classic track “Imagine” was referred to as a new world order anthem, while others alleged his murder in 1980 was because he’d strayed too far from the psy-ops campaign to push “hippie” values.

“I have always felt that there was something not quite right about Lennon’s murder,” a member wrote. “No fan would go that crazy to go and pull a trigger, unless they are mind-controlled.” Another claimed: “The bullets entered his body from the opposite side to where the alleged gunman was standing. It was the doorman who shot him.”

Rolling Stone concluded: “There’s so much existing lore to the band, many Q soldiers are old enough to remember seeing them on TV, and the trove of eccentric lyrics and art is inexhaustible. … They can turn anything into deranged content. The lads from Liverpool just make it easy.”

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 56% of American Adults believe COVID-19 vaccines are effective at preventing infection with the virus, including 26% who say the vaccines are Very Effective. We know about Black Lives Matter. My new video is about a group called Black Guns Matter.

Maj Toure, a Philadelphia high school dropout turned activist, tells me he started it after he got tired of hearing people endless chanting, "Black lives matter" but saying nothing "when it's time for Black people to defend their lives."

Toure carries a gun wherever he goes. "This is my human right," he says. "If anybody wants to come chase me down about that, let's go to court."

He encourages others to arm themselves, especially people who live in high crime neighborhoods.

I point out that means he wants more guns in places where there are already more shootings.

That's the point, says Toure. "The only thing that's going to stop evil are good, solid people strong enough to stop them."

He sells a T-shirt with the slogan "make criminals afraid again" printed on the front.

"Criminals should be deathly afraid," says Toure. "If you're robbing people and carjacking, I want you to know that we're gonna arm our community to deal with you very, very properly."

More guns in the hands of citizens, he says, deters criminals.

There is evidence for that. Economist John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime," points out that crime usually drops in states that approve concealed carry laws. The explanation is that criminals in those states fear that their victims could be armed.

I push back at Toure, pointing out that more guns also may lead to more accidental shootings."

"That's under the assumption that those gun owners aren't getting training," replies Toure.

Training is what Toure does. In 2016, he held his first Black Guns Matter event. He expected 30 people, but 300 showed up. "It was beautiful," he says.

His group now teaches classes all around America.

"We're teaching absolute beginners that want to know how to be safe and responsible firearms owners."

If you are threatened, he says, you need a gun and need to know how to use it.

In my video, he tells his students, "No one's coming to save me! I have to save and protect myself and my family."

Last year, about 90% of gun stores reported an increase in sales to Black people.

"I made it so," says Toure. "Gun control is racist." Gun control was "started to literally stop Black people from having the means to defend themselves."

That is true. Before the Civil War, Tennessee changed its constitution to say that only "free white men" have a right to bear arms. Virginia banned Blacks from carrying "any firelock of any kind."

Later, when some local governments wouldn't protect Blacks from racist whites, Blacks often took up arms to protect themselves. Where Blacks had access to firearms, there were fewer lynchings.

The largest hemp producer in the world

This card from 1889 by the New York roasting company Arbuckle’s Coffee is part of a series of fifty cards which show unique qualities of various countries in the world. This collection of cards from the Russian Empire does not only show the Winter Palace of the Tsar in Saint Petersburg (The Hermitage) but also the cultivation of hemp and flax.

Since the eighteenth century, Russia was the largest hemp producer in the world. Around 1740, the country produced at least eighty percent of the hemp that was used in Europe for sails, rope, nets etc. High quality hemp was the number one export article of the country, it was more important than fur, wood or iron. In the second half of the eighteenth century, Great Britain imported ninety percent of its hemp from Russia. British shipping was almost completely dependent on Russian hemp. This was enough reason for Napoleon to start a hemp war

The hemp war

Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I signed the Peace Treaty of Tilsit in 1807. One of the conditions was that Russia would no longer trade with Great Britain; Napoleon’s arch enemy. The French Emperor hoped that a shortage of Russian hemp would weaken the British fleet (and economy). In 1811, Russia resumed trade with Great Britain. Napoleon protested but did not get a reaction from the Tsar. Consequently, Napoleon put an army of 680.000 men together and on 24 June 1812 began his march on Moscow to, among other things, gain his control over the Russian hemp production. The campaign was a complete disaster and meant the beginning of the end for Napoleon.

After the Russian Revolution

The country was still the world’s greatest producer of hemp after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The most important production areas were situated in the current Ukraine and White Russia. In 1931, a special institution was established in Glukhov (Ukraine) for the development of new hemp crops. In the nineteen seventies they successfully developed a better fibre quality, a higher yield per hectare and a lower THC-level.

2.5 million hectares of wild hemp

After the fall of the Soviet Union, the hemp cultivation decreased significantly. One of the last Russian hemp factories is in Bolkhov. Once, there were sixteen. However, according to a rough estimation, there are circa 2.5 million hectares of wild hemp growing in the far east of Russia and around the Black Sea.
