House GOP brings bill to audit Ukraine spending – nearing $103 billion

Several Republicans in the House of Representatives introduced a bill on Thursday to audit the aid the U.S. has given to Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February. The audit bill comes as the U.S. has already sent about $66 billion this year and could surpass $103 billion if a new spending request is approved for Ukraine.

To date, lawmakers have approved a two tranches of money for Ukraine in March, May and September of this year, worth $13.6 billion, $40 billion and $12.3 billion respectively. This week, President Joe Biden asked Congress to authorize another $37.7 billion in funding for Ukraine, which would bring U.S. aid for Ukraine since Russia attacked to about $103.6 billion.

The Daily Caller first reported on Thursday that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had introduced legislation — along with fellow Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz (FL), Paul Gosar (AZ), Thomas Massiev (KY), Andy Biggs (Az), Barry Moore (AL), Matt Rosendale (MT), Andrew Clyde (GA), Dan Bishop (NC), Greg Steube (FL) and Clay Higgins (LA) — to audit all military, civilian and financial aid given to Ukraine under President Biden.

“The American people deserve [to know] where their hard earned tax dollars are going to a foreign country who is not a member of NATO and President Biden himself said he would not defend,” Greene told The Daily Caller.

Greene also tweeted a video on Thursday of wounded Ukrainian soldiers walking through the halls of Congress.

“It is heartbreaking to see these disabled Ukrainian soldiers here in the halls of Congress being used as pawns to pressure our Congress to give American’s hard earned tax dollars to Zelensky,” Greene said. “I’m calling for an audit of funds to Ukraine and to fund and secure our border.”

Qatar banned the sale of beer at World Cup stadiums on Friday, a sudden U-turn on the deal it made to secure the soccer tournament — only two days before the opening game.

The move was the latest sign of the tension of hosting the event, which is not just a sports tournament but also a monthlong party, in the conservative Muslim emirate where the sale of alcohol is heavily restricted. It’s also a significant blow to World Cup beer sponsor Budweiser and raised questions about how much control FIFA retains over its tournament.

When Qatar launched its bid to host the the tournament, the country agreed to FIFA’s requirements of selling alcohol in stadiums — but the details were only released in September, just 11 weeks before the first kickoff, a suggestion of how fraught the negotiations may have been. Friday’s statement from FIFA said non-alcoholic beer will still be sold at the eight stadiums, while champagne, wine, whiskey and other alcohol will still be served in the luxury hospitality areas of the arenas.

But the vast majority of ticket holders don’t have access to those areas — though they will be able to drink alcoholic beer in the evenings in what is known as the FIFA Fan Festival, a designated party area that also offers live music and activities. Outside of the tournament-run areas, Qatar puts strict limits on the purchase and consumption of alcohol, though its sale has been permitted in hotel bars for years.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from … stadium perimeters,” FIFA said in a statement.

Pompeo tweaks Trump, says GOP ‘tired of losing’

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday took a swipe at former President Trump ahead of a speech to conservatives in Nevada, saying many in the Republican Party are “tired of losing.”

“We were told we’d get tired of winning. But I’m tired of losing. And so are most Republicans,” Pompeo tweeted, promoting his appearance later in the day at the Republican Jewish Coalition gathering in Las Vegas.

Pompeo’s tweet was a reference to Trump’s refrain during campaign rallies in 2016 and 2020 that the GOP and United States more broadly would get “tired of winning” because of all the successes of his administration.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) took a similar shot at Trump earlier in the week.

“How about this? When Donald Trump won in 2016, he said we were going to get so tired of winning we would ask him to stop winning so much,” Christie told a gathering of Republican governors, noting the party lost House seats in 2018, the White House in 2020 and winnable Senate races in 2022.

“I’m tired of losing,” Christie added.

Pompeo has openly teased a possible 2024 White House bid, appearing in early primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. He has held back from directly naming Trump in his criticisms, but has in recent days taken veiled shots at his former boss.

Trump announced his 2024 candidacy on Tuesday at his Mar-a-Lago estate, though Pompeo told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt that Trump’s announcement would have no bearing on his own decision on whether to run for president.

Pompeo is one of several former Trump administration officials who are weighing potential 2024 presidential bids, along with former Vice President Mike Pence and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

The former secretary of State will join other potential GOP presidential contenders set to address the conference in Nevada this weekend, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Pence.

Child sexual abuse: new guidelines for first responders

The exponential growth in online child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEM) is a significant challenge for European law enforcement agencies. For officers responding to potential victims of CSEM, this means they need to be equipped with the necessary skills and training to swiftly act in the best interests of the child.

To assist these first responding officers, a new set of training guidelines have been published today on the occasion of the European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. This toolkit is the result of a collaboration between Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and the European Cybercrime Training and Education Group (ECTEG) in the framework of the GRACE project.

The guidelines will equip first responding officers with the necessary knowledge to effectively handle delicate situations that take place at a victim’s close whereabouts, such as their home or school, often hidden from the eyes of the public.

The guidelines are prepared in a way that encompasses the unified standards that these officers can use in their daily work, equipping them with relevant information on how best to respond if they came across a child they believe is being subjected to sexual abuse.

The restricted version of these guidelines will be embedded into the ECTEG’s eFirst project, as part of the knowledge base that every law enforcement officer should be aware of, regardless of their field of work.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel on Friday to oversee Justice Department investigations into former President Donald Trump, according to people familiar with the matter.

The special counsel will assess whether criminal charges are merited in connection with the handling of classified documents at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and oversee key aspects of the sprawling Justice Department investigation into efforts by Mr. Trump and his allies to overturn his 2020 election loss, according to a senior Justice Department official.

A formal announcement, which is expected by Friday afternoon, would come three days after Mr. Trump announced another bid for the presidency and would mark the naming of the third independent prosecutor in five years to examine issues involving Mr. Trump.

Detective Glenn Eddy blows lid on sickening tactics used on kids in court

One of the country’s top cops has blown the lid on tactics used by the defence on alleged child sexual abuse victims in court to “aggressively go after” them in the hope the case falls apart.

Detective Senior Constable Glenn Eddy, from the NSW Child Abuse Unit, is one of the state’s longest-serving and most experienced child abuse investigators.

A police officer for more than 23 years, Detective Eddy has spent the last 13 years attached to the Child Abuse Unit, where he has forensically interviewed more than 450 children.

“People would be shocked if they saw what really happens in court,” Detective Eddy tells news.com.au.

“I wouldn’t want to put my own kids through it. I wouldn’t want to put any kid through it. We are feeding them to the wolves.

“Some judges, they expect a five-year-old to behave the same as an adult when being cross examined, and so the defence aggressively go after the child.

“It can be a total lottery dip of which judge you get on the day. Some [judges] won’t allow [certain] evidence in. So you’re asking a jury to put together a jigsaw puzzle but you’re only giving them half the piece to work out the puzzle.”
