The expansion to the Panama Canal was completed in 2016, and some of the traffic that used the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is probably going through the canal. This might be impacting TEUs on the West Coast.

To remove the strong seasonal component for inbound traffic, the first cap shows the rolling 12-month average. The Protostar within L1527
The protostar within dark cloud L1527 is a mere 100,000 years old, still embedded in the cloud of gas and dust that feeds its growth. In this NIRCam image from the James Webb Space Telescope, the dark band at the neck of the infrared nebula is a thick disk that surrounds the young stellar object. Viewed nearly edge-on and a little larger than our Solar System, the disk ultimately supplies material to the protostar while hiding it from Webb's direct infrared view. The nebula itself is seen in stunning detail though. Illuminated by infrared light from the protostar, the hourglass-shaped nebula's cavities are created as material ejected in the star-forming process plows through the surrounding medium. As the protostar gains mass it will eventually become a full-fledged star, collapsing and igniting nuclear fusion in its core. A likely analog to our own Sun and Solar System in their early infancy, the protostar within dark cloud L1527 lies some 460 light-years distant in the Taurus star-forming region. Webb's NIRCam image spans about 0.3 light-years.

Hydro-Québec employee charged with spying for China
A Hydro-Québec employee accused of sending trade secrets to China has been charged with espionage.
The employee, Yuesheng Wang, 35, was arrested on Monday morning at his home in Candiac, Que., following an RCMP investigation.
Wang appeared in court on Tuesday via videoconference, from the RCMP detention centre in Montreal, using a Mandarin interpreter. His next appearance is Friday.
He is accused of fraud for obtaining trade secrets, unauthorized use of a computer, breach of trust by a public officer and obtaining trade secrets, a charge under the Security of Information Act (SIA). The crimes were allegedly committed between February 2018 and October 2022.
"This investigation is very significant and sends a clear message," said Insp. David Beaudoin, who leads the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement team, which conducted the investigation into Wang. "We do believe the investigation shows that the actions undertaken by Mr. Wang are criminal in nature."
The RCMP says Wang published academic papers and filed patents in connection with Chinese universities without the permission of Hydro-Québec.
The SIA, formerly known as the Official Secrets Act, is an act of Parliament that addresses national security concerns.
This is the first time that the obtaining trade secrets charge has been laid under the SIA, Beaudoin said. The charge carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
The investigation began in August 2022 after Hydro-Québec's corporate security branch filed a complaint about Wang, Beaudoin said.
When corporate security grew suspicious, Beaudoin said they took "preventative measures" against Wang, who has since been fired from his job as a researcher at Hydro-Québec's Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES).
CETEES develops technology for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, according to Hydro-Québec.
"Our detection and intervention mechanisms allowed our investigators to bring this matter to the attention of the RCMP,
with whom we have worked closely ever since," Dominic Roy, senior director responsible for corporate security at Hydro-Québec, said in a statement.
"No organization is safe from a situation like this one, which is why we must always remain vigilant and transparent, and we must not tolerate violations of the company's code of ethics."
Wang's research focused on batteries.
His byline appears on published academic papers as recently as April 2022, working with other Hydro-Québec researchers, but also, for some papers, alongside researchers affiliated with Chinese universities.
Wang has worked at Hydro-Québec since October 2016, according to information on LinkedIn, a social media platform. Before that, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Arkansas and a visiting researcher at Queen Mary University of London. He has a master's degree in materials engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' institute of physics.
Hydro-Québec is Quebec's government-owned energy provider.

Existing-Home Sales Slumped 5.9% in October
Existing-home sales faded for the ninth month in a row to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.43 million. Sales fell 5.9% from September and 28.4% from one year ago. The median existing-home sales price rose to $379,100, an increase of 6.6% from the previous year. The inventory of unsold existing homes slipped for the third consecutive month to 1.22 million at the end of October, or the equivalent of 3.3 months' supply at the current monthly sales pace. Properties typically remained on the market for 21 days in October, up from 19 days in September and 18 days in October 2021. Sixty-four percent of homes sold in October 2022 were on the market for less than a month.
First-time buyers were responsible for 28% of sales in October, down from 29% in both September 2022 and October 2021. NAR's 2022 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers – released earlier this month4 – found that the annual share of first-time buyers was 26%, the lowest since NAR began tracking the data. All-cash sales accounted for 26% of transactions in October, up from 22% in September and 24% in October 2021. Distressed sales5 – foreclosures and short sales – represented 1% of sales in October, down from 2% in September and identical to October 2021.

Masayoshi Son personally owes SoftBank close to $5bn because of growing losses on the Japanese conglomerate's technology bets, which have also rendered the value of his stake in the group's second Vision Fund worthless.
The billionaire's ballooning personal liabilities, discovered through a Financial Times analysis of SoftBank's recent filings, comes as the world's biggest tech investor was hammered by plunging tech stocks and valuations in private companies over the past year. The 65-year-old chief executive and founder of SoftBank last week said he would step back from running day-to-day operations at the group. His main focus, he said, would be on the company's British chip subsidiary Arm, after the technology conglomerate posted quarterly investment losses of $10bn. The widening losses in SoftBank's various investment vehicles have also added billions of dollars to the tab that Son owes the group in relation to its technology bets. This is because SoftBank fronted him the money to invest in its technology-related funds, which he is under no obligation to repay for many years.
The value of Son's 17.25% stake in SoftBank's $56bn second Vision Fund was also wiped out entirely by the end of September, having been valued at $682mn during the previous quarter. His stake in the investment vehicle climbed as high as $2.8bn at the end of 2021, when heady valuations for start-ups enabled SoftBank to sell shares in public listings of portfolio companies such as WeWork and AutoStore. Son has to personally cover a third of the losses in Northstar, which earned notoriety for carrying out the "Nasdaq whale" trades in US technology stocks in 2020. Vikram-S, India’s 1st privately built rocket launched successfully
The VKS is a single-stage fuel rocket developed by Hyderabad-based startup company Skyroot Aerospace Pvt Ltd (SAPL) and is a single-stage spin-stabilised solid propellant rocket with a mass of approximately 545 kgs
Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket, was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from its spaceport in Sriharikota, about 115 km from Chennai, at 11:30am on Friday.
After the launch, the rocket achieved an 89.5 km peak altitude around 12pm with all flight parameters intact, said the developer Skyroot Aerospace.
The rocket has been named after Vikram Sarabhai, hailed as the father of India’s space sector. In a bid to symbolise a new start, the mission has been named ‘Prarambh’, which translates as “beginning”.
Dr Jitendra Singh, union minister of state (independent charge), science and technology, atomic energy and space, who attended the launch on Friday said, “This is indeed a new prarambh (start) for the private space sector.”
Taking to Twitter, Singh congratulated India and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this milestone achievement, he wrote, “Congratulations India! A historic landmark under PM @narendramodi! A turning point for Indian #StartUps! A new beginning for #ISRO! First ever private Rocket Vikram-S is in Space.”

The VKS is a single-stage fuel rocket has been developed by Hyderabad-based startup company Skyroot Aerospace Pvt Ltd (SAPL) and is a single-stage spin-stabilised solid propellant rocket with a mass of approximately 545 kgs.
“Skyroot was the first startup to sign an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with ISRO for launching its rockets. Apart from being the nation’s first private launch, it will also be the maiden mission of Skyroot Aerospace, named Prarambh. It will carry a total of three payloads in space, including one from foreign customers,” Dr Jitendra Singh said on Thursday.
Skyroot Aerospace said Vikram-S will help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the Vikram series of orbital class space launch vehicles, including many sub-systems and technologies that will be tested across pre-lift-off and post-lift-off phases of the launch.
This launch will be heralding a “new age in India’s space sector”, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe)—a single-window autonomous agency under the government’s department of space to boost the presence of private players in the space sector, said.
The initial launch date of Vikram-S was scheduled for November 15 but was delayed due to bad weather.

I am having a hard time with Proto. I am not techie for starters. I open 8Kun and try to post (paid for Proto) it tells me I have to log in. The US doesn’t want the conflict to end, Erdogan’s deputy party leader says
The West is using Ukraine to wage a war against Russia and has gone so far as to sabotage Turkish diplomacy that sought to negotiate an end to it, the deputy leader of Türkiye’s ruling AKP party, Numan Kurtulmus, told CNN Turk on Friday.
“This war is not between Russia and Ukraine, it is a war between Russia and the West,” Kurtulmus told the outlet, adding that “the US and some countries in Europe” are prolonging the conflict by supporting Ukraine.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is talking to both Moscow and Kiev, said Kurtulmus, and in March managed to organize negotiations in Istanbul that looked promising. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky, “were going to sign” a deal, but “someone didn’t want” that to happen.
According to Ukrainian media, Kiev received a message in April that the West was not interested in peace with Russia, which encouraged Zelensky to break off the talks. The messenger was reportedly none other than the UK prime minister at the time, Boris Johnson.
“There was progress on certain issues, and we were reaching the final point, and then suddenly we saw that the war accelerated,” Kurtulmus told CNN Turk on Friday. “What we want is an end to this war. Someone is trying not to end the war. The US sees the prolongation of the war as its interest.”
In his opinion, the conflict has made much of Europe clamor for NATO to become more active against the perceived threat from Russia, which benefits Washington.
According to Kurtulmus, the “balance of the world system disappeared” with the demise of the Soviet Union, and a “fierce power struggle” is currently taking place.
“It is essential to establish a global political system. It is necessary to establish new institutions that will ensure world peace,” he said.
Kurtulmus is a former Turkish deputy prime minister, who has been Erdogan’s deputy at the head of AKP since 2018. His comments came as Russia agreed to extend the Turkish-negotiated deal for exporting grain through the Black Sea by 120 days, on the condition Kiev doesn’t use the sea corridor to carry out more attacks.

Man Suspected Of Mowing Down 25 Cop Recruits In SUV Let Out Of Jail
The 22-year-old man accused of driving a vehicle through a crowd of more than 20 police recruits in Whittier, California, Wednesday morning was released from jail Thursday night, according to CNN.
Nicholas Gutierrez was arrested after he allegedly drove down a road in the wrong direction and crashed into a group of recruits from multiple law enforcement agencies in what Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva originally called “a horrific accident,” the outlet reported. Rep. Jim Jordan Reveals His First Targets For His Investigation Into The Dept Of Education
Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio revealed the first targets of his investigation into Biden’s Education Department in a document obtained by the Daily Caller.
In a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Jordan called for voluntary compliance with “several requests for information and documents concerning the Biden Administration’s misuse of federal criminal and counterterrorism resources to target concerned parents at school board meetings.” He informed Cardona in the document “if our requests remain outstanding at the beginning of the 118th Congress, the Committee may be forced to resort to compulsory process to obtain the material we require.”
The document specifies Cardona has ignored or “failed to respond sufficiently” to several similar requests made as recently as Oct. 17. Governor Greg Abbott today directed the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Texas school superintendents that the COVID-19 vaccine cannot be mandated as part of school entry requirements. Instead, Texas law overrides a recent recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that added the vaccine to immunization schedules for adults and school-aged children.

The European (EEA and non-EEA countries) database of suspected drug reaction reports is EudraVigilance, verified by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and they are now reporting 48,817 fatalities, and 5,107,883 injuries following injections of four experimental COVID-19 shots:
COVID-19 MRNA VACCINE MODERNA (CX-024414)
COVID-19 MRNA VACCINE PFIZER-BIONTECH
COVID-19 VACCINE ASTRAZENECA (CHADOX1 NCOV-19)
COVID-19 VACCINE JANSSEN (AD26.COV2.S)
From the total of injuries recorded, almost half of them (2,177,286) are serious injuries.
“Seriousness provides information on the suspected undesirable effect; it can be classified as ‘serious’ if it corresponds to a medical occurrence that results in death, is life-threatening, requires inpatient hospitalisation, results in another medically important condition, or prolongation of existing hospitalisation, results in persistent or significant disability or incapacity, or is a congenital anomaly/birth defect.”
A Health Impact News subscriber in Europe ran the reports for each of the four COVID-19 shots we are including here. It is a lot of work to tabulate each reaction with injuries and fatalities, since there is no place on the EudraVigilance system we have found that tabulates all the results.
Since we have started publishing this, others from Europe have also calculated the numbers and confirmed the totals.*
