Book reveals secret meeting between Adam Schiff's aides and Ukraine whistleblower attorney

Claims by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) that he had no contact with the intelligence community whistleblower at the center of the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump are disputed in a new book. In Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress’s Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump, authors Rachael Bade and Karoun Demirjian reveal a meeting between the whistleblower’s attorney, Andrew Bakaj, and lawyers working for the House Select Committee on Intelligence. This occurred in the run-up to the fall 2019 launch of an impeachment inquiry into Trump over allegations he demanded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to initiate corruption investigations into now-President Joe Biden in exchange for U.S. military aid already promised to Kyiv. Schiff was, and is, the chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence. Lawyers working for the committee who met with Bakaj, the attorney representing the person who filed a whistleblower complaint with the intelligence community inspector general detailing Trump's demands (made during a July 25, 2019, telephone conversation with Zelensky), reported directly to Schiff. That Sept. 9, 2019, meeting occurred prior to revelations about the phone call surfacing in the press and got underway before the whistleblower complaint had been forwarded to Congress, lending some credence to Republican charges, made during the impeachment inquiry, that the California Democrat was secretly coordinating with the whistleblower from the very beginning. From an excerpt of Unchecked (publishing Oct. 18 by William Morrow) shared with the Washington Examiner, here is how Bade, a reporter for Politico, and Demirjian, a reporter for the Washington Post, set the scene for the key meeting between Bakaj and Schiff’s committee lawyers, plus his chief investigator Dan Goldman, now the Democratic nominee in New York’s 10th Congressional District: “Andrew Bakaj was known around Washington for representing government employees calling foul on sensitive national security matters. So when he reached out to Schiff’s Intelligence panel on Sunday, September 8, asking to discuss something sensitive in person, Schiff’s counsels promptly agreed. The following afternoon, panel counsel Maher Bitar escorted Bakaj down three flights of stairs to a conference room in the committee’s secure chambers, where Dan Goldman, Schiff’s investigations director, and another panel lawyer were waiting.” Under federal law, Bakaj was not yet, at the time of this meeting, permitted to reveal specifics of his client’s whistleblower complaint to Schiff’s staff. But according to Bade and Demirjian, Bakaj, an experienced attorney, provided enough “breadcrumbs” to make clear the incident and players involved. That might have been because this was not the first time Schiff’s underlings on the committee, and therefore, presumably, the panel chairman himself, got wind of the Trump-Zelensky call.

Before Bakaj trekked to Capitol Hill to meet with Schiff's staff on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, there had been another meeting, reported by the New York Times in October 2019 and recounted by Bade and Demirjian in Unchecked; “In late July, a CIA official who had previously been detailed to the White House approached an old colleague of his, who was working as a lawyer for Adam Schiff on the House Intelligence Committee. Because they were off-campus, their meeting had the air of a social visit, but the CIA official had very serious matters of state on his mind. He was worried that Trump — along with [former New York Mayor Rudy] Giuliani — had tried to solicit election interference from the president of Ukraine during a phone call that had taken place just days before. “The official had not listened to the call himself but had heard enough alarming details from others to feel compelled to do something. Without sharing those details, he asked Schiff’s lawyer for advice on what he should do.”

The Log Cabin Republicans, the national Republican LGBT lobby, has endorsed 38 candidates in the congressional midterm elections — outing, so to speak, GOP supporters of wider diversity.

Leading the pack are Nevada Senate candidate Adam Laxalt and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

Just this week, they added a handful more, including Alaska’s Sarah Palin, who is running for the state’s lone House seat.

Long way home: How former Ukrainian regions joined Russia

RT recalls the chain of events that led to Kiev’s loss of sovereignty over a significant part of its territory

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed documents paving the way for the formal acceptance by the Russian Federation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions. The treaties await ratification by the Russian Parliament.

According to Moscow, Friday’s decision followed a democratic vote, in which people living in the former regions of Ukraine exercised their right to self-determination and requested Moscow’s protection from Kiev.

The historic move was condemned and rejected by Kiev and its foreign backers, which described the move as annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory.

RT takes a look back at how an armed coup in Kiev eight years ago led to a change of European borders amid a major armed conflict.

Maidan

In late 2013, a wave of street protest began in Kiev, ostensibly sparked by the government of Viktor Yanukovich shunning an economic agreement with the EU - a deal sold to Ukrainians as a harbinger of immediate social and economic benefits.

As weeks of determined protest stretched into months, the so-called Maidan demonstrations were hijacked by radical nationalists, resulting in violent clashes with security forces in which dozens died. International politicians lent their support to the protests, with senior US diplomats famously handing out cookies in central Kiev. The emboldened movement gathered momentum and, despite a power-sharing deal mediated in February 2014 by Russia, Germany, France and Poland, escalating violence forced then-President Viktor Yanukovich to flee.

The US-backed coup in the capital rallied the radical forces,who resorted to openly threatening the pro-Russian population in Ukraine with violenceif they dared oppose the newly-installed authorities in Kiev.

Minsk agreements

The Crimean Peninsula had strong historic ties with Russia, having been transferred to Kiev’s control only in 1954 under Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev. The region is essential for Russia’s national security as its deep harbours host the Black Sea naval Fleet.

In a daring operation that was thought to have eventually prevented significant bloodshed, Moscow deployed special forces across the peninsula, and local authorities held a referendum on breaking with Ukraine and joining Russia. Moscow formally accepted Crimea’s bid in March 2014.

The situation with two Donbass regions developed differently. In mid-April 2014, Kiev sent the military to quash protests in Donetsk and Lugansk. Protesters responded by forming militias and fighting back, militarising an already inflamed conflict. The following month, the two regions held referendums on declaring their independence.

President Joe Biden's latest mishap onstage has raised new concerns from Republicans over the president, with some renewing their requests for Biden to take a cognitive test.

Biden had been speaking at a White House conference on Wednesday when he asked, "Where's Jackie," referring to the late Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN), who died in August. The latest gaffe by the president, among past slip-ups, has led Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who served as a physician to the president for both former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, to ask for Biden to take "a cognitive test," according to Fox News.

Putin names orchestrator of Nord Stream blasts

Sanctioning Russia is no longer enough for the US, which has now switched to sabotage, the president claimed

The US orchestrated the blasts on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, which delivered Russian natural gas to Germany, because they “obviously” benefit from it, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

Putin accused Washington of trying to pressure the EU into banning Russian supplies to “completely get their hands on the European market.”

“But the sanctions are no longer enough for the Anglo-Saxons,” he said, using Russian shorthand for the US-UK transatlantic alliance. “They have turned to sabotage – it’s unbelievable, but it’s a fact – by organizing the explosions on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines,” the president stated.

“They de facto began the destruction of the common European energy infrastructure. It’s obvious to everyone who benefits from it. Those who benefit are the ones who have done it.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken denounced Putin's statement as part of “outrageous misinformation and disinformation campaigns” coming from Moscow.

“I really have nothing to say to the absurd allegation from President Putin that we are or other partners or allies are somehow responsible for this,” Blinken said, according to AFP.

Putin was speaking at the Kremlin ahead of signing treaties on the inclusion of the two Donbass republics, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, which declared independence from Ukraine, into the Russian Federation.

The Nord Stream pipelines lost pressure on Monday, after which four gas leaks appeared. The EU and several of its member states said the explosions were deliberate. Putin described the attack on Saturday as an act of terrorism.

Nord Stream 1 was already shut down due to prolonged maintenance when the leaks appeared. Russian operator Gazprom blamed the lengthy delay on Western sanctions that were imposed on Moscow following its military operation in Ukraine.

Nord Stream 2 was never fully operational because Germany halted certification of it in February in response to the Ukraine conflict.

Finland Interior Minister Collapses During Live Broadcast on Nord Stream Briefing

On Wednesday night, the live broadcast of the government briefing on the explosions on Nord Stream in Helsinki, Finland, was interrupted when the Finnish Interior Minister, Krista Mikkonen, suddenly collapsed.

Krista was standing at the far end of a row of podiums. She tried to walk away from the podium, and all of the sudden she suddenly fainted out of sight of the cameras. However, as two of her coworkers went to her aid to help her up, the cameras turned and captured the incident.

FBI Refuses to Return Security Camera Footage of Bombing at Pro-Life Pregnancy Center — Has Made ZERO Arrests in Over 70 Attacks on Pro-Life Centers

In June, far-left pro-abortion terrorists firebombed a Compasscare pro-life crisis center in Buffalo, New York.

Amherst police reportedly investigated the fire at CompassCare in Eggertsville as arson.

Fire officials say the firebombing caused at least $150,000 worth of damage to the structure, Buffalo News reported.

“Early this morning police and firefighters responded to smoke at CompassCare’s Buffalo office. The building was firebombed. The windows in the reception room and nurses’ office were broken and fires lit. Graffiti on the building left by the arsonists refers to the abortion terrorist group Jane’s Revenge reading, “Jane Was Here.”

“This is the pro-abortion ‘Kristallnacht.’ Because of this act of violence, the needs of women facing unplanned pregnancy will go unmet and babies will die. I wonder if Gov. Hochul will veto the Pregnancy Center Investigation Bill? I wonder if Attorney General Letitia James will investigate these cowardly criminals? CompassCare will rebuild because women deserve better. Vladimir Putin Vows Destruction of ‘Satanic’ West in Ukraine Annexation Rant

Russian strongman Vladimir Putin marked the illegal annexation of a territory representing 15 percent of Ukraine on Friday with a rambling speech lamenting the fall of the Soviet Union, condemning gender transitions for children, and proclaiming, “the destruction of this Western hegemony is irreversible.”

Four regions of Ukraine – Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and the two regions of eastern Donbas, Donetsk and Luhansk – held wartime referendums throughout the past week asking civilians if they would like Russia to annex their land.

Reports on the ground indicated that soldiers went door-to-door in some regions clearly brandishing weapons and forcing citizens to vote in favor of the annexation, leading the vast majority of the free world to reject the referendum as a sham.

The pro-Russia leaders in all four areas claimed that an overwhelming number of participants, as many as 99 percent of voters in the Donbas, supported joining Russia.

The four leaders attended an event in Moscow on Friday in which Putin officially signed legal documents formalizing the colonization of those regions.

In a wide-ranging, often meandering speech, Putin welcomed the four Ukrainian regions as culturally, ethnically, and traditionally Russian.

“They made their choice and our common destiny and millennia of history are behind us,” Putin proclaimed. “These feelings cannot be destroyed by anyone, which is why older generations and the youth, those who remember the tragedy of the collapse of the Soviet Union voted for our unity, for our common shared future.”

Putin claimed that he was not pursuing the reconstruction of the Soviet Union, one of the bloodiest communist dictatorships in history.

“I would like everyone, including the authorities in Kyiv and their real masters in the West, to hear me and remember that the people of [the four territories] are becoming our citizens. Forever,” Putin said. “We call on the Kyiv regime to immediately cease fire, cease all hostilities – the war it unleashed in 2014 and return to the negotiating table. We are ready for this.”

Putin refers to the administration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “regime” because he deems the 2014 presidential elections in that country illegitimate, as then-President Petro Poroshenko took office after a popular rebellion ousted pro-Russian leader Viktor Yanukovych. Zelensky won the 2019 presidential election, which no party has denounced as unfree or unfair, against Poroshenko as the “pro-Russian” candidate – a reality Putin has yet to reconcile with his proclamations that Zelensky is a dictator.

Putin then launched into a tirade against Western society in general, referring to Western values as “Satanic.”

“The destruction of this Western hegemony is irreversible, the world will never be the same,” he insisted. “For great, historic Russia, for future generations, for our children and grandchildren we need to protect them from these experiments which aimed to break their soul and their consciousness. … We are fighting for our culture, for our language so that it’s impossible to cancel it and remove it from history.”

Truss Govt Pressures Pro-Brexit British Unionists in Northern Ireland to Accept EU Sell-Out

The Conservative Party-led British government is pressuring pro-Brexit, pro-British unionists in Northern Ireland to accept their ongoing sell-out to the European Union and form a regional government or face consequences.

Northern Ireland, sometimes referred to as Ulster, particularly by British Unionists in the Province, was left effectively still inside the European Union, at least for the purposes of customs and regulations, and even subject to an internal border between it and the Great British mainland in the Brexit deal agreed by Boris Johnson.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is the largest of the pro-British parties in Northern Ireland, fiercely opposed this as undermining their place in the United Kingdom, and ultimately refused to continue participating in the power-sharing government with pro-EU, Irish nationalist party Sinn Féin when London failed to rectify the situation — meaning no regional government at all.

Chris Heaton-Harris, the Liz Truss government’s Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, has now warned the DUP that if they do not form a regional government with Sinn Féin — something they have vowed they will not do until the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol is reformed — he will have a “legal obligation” to call another regional election, which may prove difficult for the DUP now the nationalist-leaning Catholic community outnumbers the unionist-leaning Protestant community for the first time.

“I’ll have to call an election on the 28th of October if there is no executive. That is just a fact,” he said, per POLITICO.

Prime Minister Liz Truss, though she campaigned energetically for the Remain in the European Union campaign in 2016, claims she has embraced Brexit and was pro-Brexit Conservative politicians’ candidate of choice for party leader in the race to replace Boris Johnson.

For all her supposed convert’s zeal, however, there appears little prospect that she will stand up to the EU on Northern Ireland imminently, despite evidence of significant disruption to GB-NI trade as a result of the way the Northern Ireland Protocol is being applied, with customs checks allegedly being carried out with disproportionate vigour by officials.

Indeed, demands from the DUP that the Protocol be unilaterally abolished or reformed, threatened by the British government in the face of EU intransigence for approaching two years, are unlikely to be lead to any action for at least another six months, with that being the latest deadline Truss has set for a compromise with Brussels to be reached.
