Ukraine conflict could end ‘in a few days’ – Lukashenko

Western support for the idea, however, is required, the Belarusian president says

If the Western powers back a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, hostilities between Moscow and Kiev’s forces could be over in just a few days, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said on Friday, urging European countries “to come to your senses” and stop the bloodshed.

Belarus considers the fighting between the “fraternal peoples” of Ukraine and Russia to be a “huge tragedy,” Lukashenko said, speaking at a presentation of letters of credence by foreign ambassadors in Minsk.

“This conflict is a direct consequence of strategic intrigues and the greatest stupidity, displayed primarily by Western politicians,” he stated.

However, some actors, including EU countries, say they would like the hostilities to end, Lukashenko said, adding: “If the Europeans sincerely want this, peace can be achieved within a few days.” He urged the Western powers to “come to your senses” and “do everything to ensure that there is peace on this earth.”

The Belarusian president also said that Belarus has always supported diplomatic efforts in resolving the conflict, noting that his country hosted three rounds of Ukraine-Russia talks. He was referring to negotiations that took place in late February and early March, days after Russia launched its military operation. These diplomatic efforts failed to put an end to the hostilities.

“Why were the negotiations wrapped up, who did this? This is a rhetorical question,” he said, addressing the ambassadors. “Someone needs this bloodshed. Who? You, diplomats, figure it out,” he added.

Private texts between Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey made public

Court documents show Musk and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey discussed changes to the platform prior to the $44 billion buyout

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey had communicated privately about the social media platform well before the former made a $44 billion buyout offer, newly revealed court records show.

A set of text messages exchanged between the two appeared to show Dorsey having tried to get Musk onto Twitter’s board at least a year before the Tesla CEO offered to buy the company outright this past April.

In a text sent on March 26, 2022, Dorsey wrote to Musk that “a new platform is needed. It can’t be a company. That’s why I left.” He explained that he thinks Twitter should be an “open-sourced protocol” and can’t be based around an advertising model, as most social media companies are.

Musk replied by saying he would “like to help if I’m able,” to which Dorsey said that he had already tried to get the Tesla CEO involved with the company a year earlier. “You care so much, get its importance and could def help in immeasurable ways,” Dorsey told Musk before revealing that the “risk averse” board had rejected the idea.

Dorsey said that he thought it was “completely stupid and backwards” that the Twitter board saw the inclusion of Musk as adding “more risk” to the company and claimed that it was at this time he decided to step down as CEO of the platform, which he did in November 2021.

The text messages also suggest that Dorsey tried to get Musk to join the board while the company was battling with activist investor firm Elliott Management in 2020, whose founder Paul Singer was seeking to oust Dorsey as CEO and make Twitter’s business side more profitable. “Back when we had the activist come in, I tried my hardest to get you on our board and our board said no.” Dorsey wrote.

A little over a week after the text exchange, Musk announced that he planned to join the Twitter board. He eventually changed course and offered to buy the company outright in order to battle policies at the social media giant that he claimed were hostile to free speech.

However, after agreeing to purchase Twitter for $44 billion at $54.20 per share, Musk decided to back out of the deal a month later after the company’s stock price took a dive. Musk’s attorneys have argued that he had been misled about Twitter and have cited concerns about privacy, security, and the number of fake accounts on the platform.

Twitter is in turn suing the billionaire to try to force him to hold up his end of the agreement and complete the purchase at the initially proposed price. A trial is scheduled for mid-October at the Delaware Chancery Court.

Notorious Ukrainian envoy lashes out at Merkel’s security speech

The former German Chancellor has “borderline obsession” with Russia, Andrey Melnik claims

Angela Merkel’s attitude towards Russia is “borderline obsession” and looks “almost perverse,” Andrey Melnik, Kiev's outgoing ambassador to Berlin said. He criticized the former chancellor for saying that Russia has a role to play in European security.

Melnik, a Ukrainian diplomat with a record of making controversial statements about officials and policies in Germany, blasted Merkel in a Twitter post on Friday morning.

“On the day [Russian President Vladimir] Putin steals 15% of Ukraine, Ms. Merkel raves about ‘involving’ Russia in the European security architecture,” he said, using the loaded epithets to describe her stance.

Melnik was reacting to a speech that the former chancellor delivered on Thursday in the town of Goslar, which celebrates its 1100th anniversary this year.

In her address, Merkel called the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in late February a “turning point” and “the greatest violation of the principles of international law since World War II.” But a long-term pan-European security architecture can only work if it “also includes Russia” she stated.

Merkel voiced the same sentiment on Tuesday at the Chancellor Helmut Kohl Foundation in Berlin. During that appearance, she urged planning for “how relations towards and with Russia could one day be redeveloped” after the conflict in Ukraine ends.

The accusation of a land-grab leveled at Putin by the Ukrainian diplomat referred to the referendums, in which people in two Donbass republics and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions voted to join Russia. Kiev dismissed the ballots as a “sham” and pledged to fight against Russia until it is defeated on the battlefield.

During his tenure as ambassador, Melnik gained a reputation for verbally attacking German officials and the policies of Berlin that he didn’t like. In May, he called incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst” for his reluctance at the time to travel to Kiev. Scholz abstained after the Ukrainian government refused to host German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whom Kiev accused of appeasing Russia during his tenure as foreign minister.

The controversial diplomat was technically recalled in July, after causing outrage in Poland and Israel by attempting to whitewash the war crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists, who collaborated with Nazi Germany, against Poles and Jews.

Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky appointed Melnik’s replacement last week, but the transition period at the embassy is still underway, according to German media.

The images were contributed by 24 photographers, one in each of 24 nautical time zones around the world. Unlike more complicated civil time zone boundaries, the 24 nautical time zones are simply 15 degree longitude bands corresponding to 1 hour steps that span the globe. Start at the upper right for the first to experience a sunrise in the nautical time zone corresponding to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) + 12 hours. In that time zone, the photographer was located in Christchurch, New Zealand. MEP wants Russian region split between two EU states

A Czech lawmaker has suggested holding a referendum on making Kaliningrad Region “Czech-Polish”

A long-time European Parliament member from the Czech Republic, Tomas Zdechovsky, has supported an idea posted by a blogger of separating the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad from Moscow and splitting it between Prague and Warsaw.

On Thursday, Zdechovsky shared a tweet from a Polish blogger showing a map of Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad Region being split between Poland and the Czech Republic. The caption to the image read: “It’s time to divide Kaliningrad, so that our Czech brothers finally have access to the sea.”

The Czech politician, who has been an MEP since 2014, even suggested a plan for how to have the region removed from Russia.

“We will hold a referendum to make Kaliningrad Czech-Polish,” he wrote, adding that “instructions” on organizing a vote could be taken from Crimea. The peninsula decided to become part of Russia in the wake of a 2014 referendum following the US-backed overthrow of the democratically-elected government of Viktor Yanukovich in Kiev.

On Tuesday, referendums on whether to join Russia concluded in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, which declared independence from Ukraine, and the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics in Donbass. The residents in all of the territories overwhelmingly supported joining Russia. On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to sign treaties on incorporating the four new constituent members into the Russian state. The treaties have yet to be approved by the parliament.

Kaliningrad is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania and the Baltic Sea and doesn’t share a border with the Czech Republic. The distance between Prague and the city of Kaliningrad is around 660km.

The region made headlines this past summer after Lithuania slapped restrictions on goods being moved by rail between mainland Russia and the exclave as part of sanctions imposed on Moscow over its military operation in Ukraine. The Russian authorities demanded that the blockade be lifted, warning that harsh counter-measures would follow otherwise. The standoff lasted for over a month and concluded with the European Commission issuing additional guidance that allowed the transfer of goods to resume.

'The Hunt for Red October' has this timeless message for Americans today

Many movies tell compelling stories with great acting and writing, though. I think what sets “The Hunt For Red October” apart is its great message, one that never seems out of sync with the times. This is because it’s a message of hope, though set amid the Cold War, about our common humanity.

We who came of age in the Eighties remember the mutual mistrust that marked the United States and Soviet relations. Yet the two main characters, American Ryan and Soviet Ramius, ultimately want the same thing: to live, to laugh and to love in a world that is free. Ryan had it, but against all odds sensed in Ramius a kindred spirit, a human soul yearning to breathe free. And so he did something about it.

Sure, world annihilation hangs in the balance. That’s what makes it such a gripping story. But Ramius’ journey to America wasn’t primarily political or ideological, it was spiritual. Ryan saw this, beyond the superficial to the essence of things, and that made all the difference. It’s ultimately a tale of redemption. We never tire of hearing the tale because this particular longing is etched upon every human heart.

There is always hope for peace – whether of the world, political or even just familial variety – when we don’t lose sight of our common humanity. These are strident and unsettling times, but in the words of St. Thomas More – in an age a tad more trying for him personally – “the times are never so bad but that a good man can live in them.”

Like Ryan and Ramius, our world today makes it easy to see only what divides us. But also like Ryan and Ramius, good men, what joy awaits us when we, as they did, learn to recognize the common longing that unites us all.

Sir,

Almighty God says in His Word, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Scripture also teaches that it is the chief duty of any civic leader to reward those who do well and to punish evildoers (Romans 13:1–7). You have not only failed in that responsibility; you routinely turn it on its head, rewarding evildoers and punishing the righteous.

The Word of God pronounces judgment on those who call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20), and yet many of your policies reflect this unholy, upside-down view of honor and morality. The diabolical effects of your worldview are evident in the statistics of California’s epidemics of crime, homelessness, sexual perversions (like homosexuality and transgenderism), and other malignant expressions of human misery that stem directly from corrupt public policy. I don’t need to itemize or elaborate on the many immoral decisions you have perpetrated against God and the people of our state, which have only exacerbated these problems. Nevertheless, my goal in writing is not to contend with your politics, but rather to plead with you to hear and heed what the Word of God says to men in your position.

“Let all kings bow down before Him, all nations serve Him” (Psalm 72:11).

“He who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is as the light of the morning when the sun rises” (2 Samuel 23:3–4).

“It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts, for a throne is established on righteousness” (Proverbs 16:12).

What God said to Cyrus is a truth you should take to heart: “I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:5–6).

In mid-September, you revealed to the entire nation how thoroughly rebellious against God you are when you sponsored billboards across America promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13–16; Isaiah 45:9–12). You further compounded the wickedness of that murderous campaign with a reprehensible act of gross blasphemy, quoting the very words of Jesus from Mark 12:31 as if you could somehow twist His meaning and arrogate His name in favor of butchering unborn infants. You used the name and the words of Christ to promote the credo of Molech (Leviticus 20:1–5). It would be hard to imagine a greater sacrilege.

Furthermore, you chose words from the lips of Jesus without admitting that in the same moment He gave the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers.

Psalm 50:16–19 speaks to people who pervert the Word of God for their own sinful ends:

But to the wicked God says,

“What right have you to recount My statutes

And to take My covenant in your mouth?

For you hate discipline,

And you cast My words behind you.

When you see a thief, you are pleased with him,

And you associate with adulterers.

You let your mouth loose in evil

And you harness your tongue for deceit.”

My concern, Governor Newsom, is that your own soul lies in grave, eternal peril. “Each one of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). One day, not very long from now, you will face that reality. Nothing is more certain. “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). You will stand in the presence of the Holy God who created you, who is your Judge, and He will demand that you give an account for how you have flouted His authority in your governing, and how you have twisted His own Holy Word to rationalize it. As you look over the precipice of eternity, what will your answer be? When you look ahead of you and see that nothing awaits you but eternal misery—the just punishment for your sins—what will all the clever rationalizations and political talking points avail for you then? And by then it will be too late for any remedy or redemption. “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

My plea to you, Sir, is that you would not let it come to that—that you would not go to that day of judgment apart from receiving forgiveness and righteousness through faith in Christ alone. In Psalm 50, after rebuking the wicked for uttering God’s words in a profane way, Scripture makes this promise: “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver. He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies Me; and he who orders his way, I shall show the salvation of God” (vv. 22–23).

So there is salvation for those who repent. Christ purchased full redemption for all who will turn from wickedness, forsake their evil thoughts and actions, and trust fully in Him as Lord and Savior.

Our church, and countless Christians nationwide, are praying for your full repentance. Please respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued all your life, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it (as has been your pattern).

Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:6–7)

Governor Newsom, “now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

BBC to cut hundreds of jobs at World Service

Nearly 400 staff at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service will lose their jobs as part of a cost-cutting program and move to digital platforms, the broadcaster announced on Thursday.

The BBC, which marks its centenary next month, said its international services needed to make savings of £28.5 million ($31 million) as part of wider reductions of £500 million, which unions blamed on the United Kingdom government.

In July, the broadcaster detailed plans to merge BBC World News television and its domestic UK equivalent into a single channel to launch in April next year.

BBC World Service one of the UK's most recognizable global brands currently operates in 41 languages around the world with a weekly audience of some 364 million people.

But the corporation explained that audience habits were changing and more people were accessing news online, which along with a freeze on BBC funding and increased operating costs meant a move to "digital-first" made financial sense.

"Today's proposals entail a net total of around 382 post closures," the public service broadcaster said in an online statement.

Eleven language services Azerbaijani, Brasil, Marathi, Mundo, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese are already digital only.

Under the restructuring plans, they will be joined by seven more: Chinese, Gujarati, Igbo, Indonesian, Pidgin, Urdu, and Yoruba.

Radio services in Arabic, Persian, Kyrgyz, Hindi, Bengali, Chinese, Indonesian, Tamil, and Urdu will stop if the proposals are approved by staff and unions.

The broadcaster pointed out that no language services will close, although some production will move out of London and schedules would change.

BBC World Service director Liliane Landor said there was a "compelling case" for expanding digital services, as audiences had more than doubled since 2018.

"The way audiences are accessing news and content is changing and the challenge of reaching and engaging people around the world with quality, trusted journalism is growing," Landor indicated.

Workers hit by the government's poor decisions

On her part, the head of the broadcasting union Bectu, Philippa Childs, expressed the union's disappointment at the proposed changes.

"While we recognize the BBC must adapt to meet the challenges of a changing media landscape, once again it is workers who are hit by the government's poorly judged political decisions," she considered.

Childs highlighted that the government's freezing of the license fee which pays for BBC World Service had created the funding squeeze and the need for cuts.

Bectu will push for staff to be redeployed where possible and to ensure it "mitigates the needs for any compulsory redundancies," she said.

BBC World Service is funded out of the UK license fee – currently £159 for a color TV and payable by every household with a television set.

The UK government announced a freeze on the license fee in January, in what was seen by critics as an attempt to save the then-prime minister Boris Johnson's job.

At the time, Johnson was facing mounting claims of wrongdoing in office, which ultimately forced him to resign.

CIA used covert websites an 'amateur' could have caught: Research

One mistake by the US' notorious intelligence hub, the CIA, has exposed intelligence agents operating in China and Iran, as the agency used hundreds of websites for secret communications that were revealed to be defective.

According to new research conducted by security experts at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the defects could have been easily identified by an "amateur" after the experts investigated the matter following a tip from reporter Joel Schectmann at Reuters that concerned the imprisonment of a CIA asset in Iran after using what Citizen Lab later determined was a “fatally insecure network."

Citizen Lab resorted to just one website and publicly available material to identify “with high confidence” a network of 885 websites reportedly used by the CIA, many of which are concerned with news, weather, and healthcare, adding, “Knowing only one website, it is likely that while the websites were online, a motivated amateur sleuth could have mapped out the CIA network and attributed it to the US government."

Surprisingly, and although the websites were active between 2004 and 2013 and probably not used by the CIA recently, Citizen Lab said a subset of the websites were still linked to active intelligence employees or assets, including a foreign contractor and a current state department employee. As this is considered a significant reveal, Citizen Lab rejected the idea of making details of its findings available to the public to prevent posing a risk to current CIA employees.

The probe could be traced back to 2018 when Yahoo News reporters Jenna McLaughlin and Zach Dorfman reported a breach, allegedly by Iran and China, of a communication system used by the agency.

The group's discovery casts doubts on security measures within the agency known as the "first line of defense for the United States" as it describes itself on the official website. Citizen Lab commented that “the reckless construction of this infrastructure by the CIA reportedly led directly to the identification and execution of assets, and undoubtedly risked the lives of countless other individuals. Our hope is that this research and our limited disclosure process will lead to accountability for this reckless behavior.”

In response, CIA spokesperson Tammy Kupperman Thorp said, “CIA takes its obligations to protect the people who work with us extremely seriously and we know that many of them do so bravely, at great personal risk. The notion that CIA would not work as hard as possible to safeguard them is false.”

Egypt currency hits near-record low: Central Bank

The Egyptian pound fell to a record low against the US dollar on Thursday, trading at 19.6 pounds per dollar, as per data from the country's central bank.

The exchange rate reached 19.6 pounds per dollar as trading ended, while the selling rate was 19.49 pounds per dollar. The euro traded at around 19.05 pounds when buying and 18.94 pounds when selling, the bank's data showed.

The previous record was set in December 2016 at 19.56 pounds per dollar.

Egypt's Central Bank raised the key rate for the first time since 2020 in March, to 9.75%, and then to 11.75% in May, causing the Egyptian currency to fall against the dollar. Since March, the pound exchange rate has fallen by 25%.

It is worth noting that Egypt reportedly requested assistance from the International Monetary Fund in late March in order to implement a comprehensive economic program in the country.

Euro plunders against Ruble, reaches lowest since 2014

Hitting its lowest rate against the Russian uble since October 2014, the Euro crumbled in the MOEX (the Moscow Exchange) on Friday to reach a value of 52.5 Rubles/Euro after falling 5.1% (2.97 Rubles) from its last closing session, while current trades are recording continuous losses to the Euro against the Ruble at the MOEX.

On the other hand, the Chinese Yuan recorded slight losses against the ruble, falling by 0.2%, while the US dollar fell by 0.5%, to reach values of 8.104 Rubles/Yuan and 56.92 Rubles/USD respectively.

The euro's rate decline in the Russian exchange market is not proportionate to its trading dynamics in the FX markets, experts stated, arguing that while it's crashing against the Ruble in the Moscow local exchange, it is recording a slight increase against the USD (0.983 Euro/USD at the time of the report), meaning that the Euro is hitting a rate 6.2% lower against the Dollar in the Moscow exchange than it is in the global FX market.

According to analysts, this is caused by the absence of demand for the Euro in the MICEX (Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange) and a large plummet of its currency in the domestic foreign exchange market.

Last May, against all Western claims that sanctions will be the end of Russia's economy, the exchange rate of the dollar and the euro fell against the Ruble, and the currency was trading below 69 rubles for the first time since June 2020, while the euro was trading below 73 rubles.

In response to Western sanctions, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country would only accept payments in Rubles for gas deliveries to "unfriendly countries" in a nod to all EU members involved in the harsh sanctions imposed on Moscow.

The appreciation of the Ruble against the USD and the Euro is mainly due to Putin's decision, as following his announcement, Russia's Ruble rose in the face of the USD and the Euro, marking a major hike since the currency took a dive against the western currencies due to the sanctions imposed on the country.

The Euro also dropped below the symbolic $1.00 mark last July for the first time since December 2002, as a result of a deteriorating prognosis for the economy of the eurozone and the potential for a total interruption of the Russian gas supply.

Eurozone economic growth has been on a decline and could soon become zero, according to the vice president of the European Central Bank (ECB) on September 27.

“We are seeing that in the third and fourth quarters there is a significant slowdown and we may find ourselves with growth rates close to zero,” said Luis de Guindos at a conference, as reported by Reuters.

Due to the stark increase in energy costs and the loss of Russian gas, economic output has been suffering. This has raised the risk of energy rationing in the next season, which will require a lot of heaters.

Last August, EU energy minister gave the European Commission a mandate to limit gas prices. Surging costs of power linked to gas prices have already stunted the production of various industries, such as fertilizers and aluminum manufacturers, and prompted EU governments, such as Germany, to increase their spending by billions in order to help their citizens.

Ukrainian shelling of refugee convoy leaves 24 people dead – local authorities

The attack targeted cars trying to enter a Russian-controlled part of Zaporozhye Region, according to the local administration

At least 24 people were killed and 36 wounded when Ukrainian forces struck a refugee convoy on Friday, Vladimir Rogov, a senior Russian-appointed official in Zaporozhye Region, has said.

Rogov wrote on Telegram that the attack targeted a convoy of cars that was traveling from Ukrainian-controlled territory to Zaporozhye Region, which declared independence from Kiev and was recognized as a separate state by Russia on Thursday.

“It happened at a car market on the Orekhovskoe highway where convoys are being formed to enter the region,” he wrote.

“24 people, including 11 men and 13 women were killed, 36 were wounded including a child,” the official said.

According to Rogov, the people, who were targeted, had protested and blocked roads earlier this week, demanding that Ukrainian authorities allow them to enter the Russian-held part of the region. “After that they were approached by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the police, who openly threatened them and said that they’ll be sorry for what they were doing,” he wrote.

The head of the administration accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of “trying to take revenge on the residents of Zaporozhye Region after they chose to join Russia during the referendum” by ordering the strike.

Rogov insisted the Ukrainian attack on the convoy was carried out with the aim of pinning the blame on Russia.

Kiev’s governor of Zaporozhye Region claimed that Russian forces were behind the shelling. While the head of a Ukrainian bomb disposal unit, police colonel Sergey Ujryumov told Reuters that the Russians “know that columns are formed here to go to the occupied territories… It’s not a coincidental strike. It’s perfectly deliberate.” According to Ujryumov, S-300 missiles were used in the attack on the convoy.

Voting on joining Russia ended in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions as well as in the two republics in Donbass on Monday, with residents in all territories overwhelmingly supporting the move. The official ceremony, in which President Vladimir Putin is expected to sign treaties on incorporating the new areas into the Russian state, is scheduled to take place in Moscow later on Friday.

A similar attack by Ukrainian forces happened in the eastern region of Kharkov on Thursday. At least 30 people, including children, were killed after a convoy of refugees, which tried to enter the People’s Republic of Lugansk, came under intense artillery bombardment, LPR authorities said.

UK implicated in Bolsonaro's dirty business; hidden dealings exposed

The BBC aired a documentary, in September 2022, titled “The Boys from Brazil: Rise of the Bolsonaros”.

The series, which constitutes of three parts, co-released with PBS in the United States, follows the ascent of Brazil's far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, who rose to the position of the country's 2018 presidential election winner from an obscure dictatorship-era military figure.

“Jair Bolsonaro is one of the world’s most controversial leaders”, the documentary begins. “An ardent admirer of Brazil’s military dictatorship, Bolsonaro came to power determined to revive their policies to exploit the Amazon – whatever the cost."

The documentary was released just days before Brazil's presidential election on October 2, with former president and Workers' Party (PT) candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the lead. Concerns are growing about Bolsonaro's willingness to accept electoral defeat if he loses the election.

While the documentary features voices critical of the Bolsonaro dictatorship, it omits one important aspect of obvious importance to the British public: the UK government's hidden dealings with the Bolsonaros.

Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act illustrate UK engagement with Brazil's far-right and demonstrate how Bolsonaro's Brazil has created a financial opportunity for the UK.

The Bolsonaros

Documents show that British officials met with the Bolsonaros in the months leading up to the 2018 election in Brazil.

The UK Ambassador in Brasilia, Vijay Rangarajan, met with Bolsonaro, his son and congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, and an unnamed advisor on April 10, 2018, just days after Lula was imprisoned. One name has been redacted.

It is worth noting that the then-chief secretary to the Treasury and current Prime Minister Liz Truss arrived in Brazil on April 9 to promote “free trade, free markets, and post-Brexit opportunities."

“British officials met with the Bolsonaros in the months running up to Brazil’s 2018 election.”

Truss met with Rangarajan in the UK Embassy in Brasilia on April 10, the same day Rangarajan met with the Bolsonaros, according to documents obtained by Declassified UK.

However, it remains unclear whether Truss also met Bolsonaro, or if her company with the same people on the same day was an unlikely coincidence. The Treasury did not respond to questions regarding Truss and the Bolsonaros.

The remainder of Truss’ visit to Brazil entailed meetings with ministers and officials on matters including “privatization”. In one of Truss’ briefing notes, it is observed that there is a new “interest in the open market” in Brazil, which “has enormous reserves of oil and gas."

‘Strategic partners’

Two months after Truss' visit, Ambassador Rangarajan sent Bolsonaro a private letter inviting him to his apartment in Brasilia to meet with a group of "Strategic Partners".

Anglo-American, BP, Shell, AstraZeneca, Unilever, and JCB were among the companies that used this word as a euphemism for the directors of Britain's biggest oil, mining, pharmaceutical, and construction enterprises.

“Deputy Bolsonaro”, the letter reads, “it was a great pleasure to meet you and initiate our conversation in April of this year. I would like to invite you for a morning coffee or lunch in my residency with the largest British investors in Brazil, at a time that best suits you”.

The meeting would be attended by “in total no more than 20 people, to allow for a fluid discussion." Rangarajan concluded the letter by telling Bolsonaro: “I hope to meet you again”.

BP and Shell

Britain continued to collaborate with the Bolsonaros following the 2018 election.

Rangarajan and Bolsonaro met again on November 14, that year, along with vice-president elect Hamilton Mouro, General Augusto Heleno, two of Bolsonaro's sons, and unknown "others".

“Rangarajan met with representatives of both companies no less than 20 times during 2018 and 2019.”

The Foreign Office has refused to reveal what was discussed at this discussion, albeit it appears that investment prospects for Britain's biggest multinationals were highlighted once more.

Indeed, the United Kingdom pushed the Brazilian government on behalf of BP and Shell in 2017, and Rangarajan met with representatives from both corporations at least 20 times in 2018 and 2019.

Truss' tour also included a discussion with Shell personnel, who boast of a "prolific… portfolio" of deep-water oil and gas production in Brazil.

"Thatcher's legacy back to life"

UK trade minister Conor Burns traveled in August 2019 to Brazil. There, he met with Bolsonaro’s infrastructure minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, praising the Brazilian government’s “economic reform agenda," which was “reminiscent of Thatcher’s."

‘I can’t imagine our future differently’: Donbass residents explain why they voted to join Russia

In this dispatch, RT’s correspondent in Donetsk outlines the local reaction to the referendums on reunification

Last week, referendums on once-again becoming part of Russia were held in the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics, as well as in the liberated territories of Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Nikolaev regions (the latter was annexed to Kherson Region).

According to the results, the ‘For’ option won all four by an overwhelming margin. RT’s correspondent in Donbass, Vladislav Ugolny, has been observing the sentiment there for the past eight years. He describes how the referendums took place, what they meant to local residents, and why their outcome simply could not have been different.

All arguments ‘against’

For those who are sufficiently immersed in the history of the struggle of the Russian residents of Ukraine for unity with their historic homeland, the results of the referendums are hardly surprising. But it is also worth pointing out from the start that not everyone in these regions took part in the vote.

In 2020, one soldier told his comrades-in-arms that he was only serving in the DPR army for the sake of a good salary by local standards. He said that, at the time, he was ready to dig trenches and go on guard duty. But in case of a resumption of active military operations, he would be at Yuzhny, a station from which buses are dispatched to Russia.

Active hostilities resumed over six months ago, eventually leading to the second referendum in Donbass. And this warrior did not take part in it.

Why? Did keep his word and escape? No, he died in 2021. He could have said anything – soldiers like to scratch their tongues. But when his comrades-in-arms came under Ukrainian fire and their wounded had to be evacuated, he volunteered. During the rescue operation, he was killed in action. He did not live to see the fighting intensify, nor did he live to see the new referendum.

There are many such people who are unhappy with what has been happening in Donbass these past eight years –where they have slowly languished as geopolitical hostages– and are also prepared to die for their land and identity. It is thanks to them and their resilience that Russia’s military offensive was possible. And these referendums also took place because of them.

They all had a lot of reasons to hate what was happening. The wounded were often dismissed retroactively to avoid paying for their injuries. And in a betrayal of memory,the names of children killed by Ukrainians in Sloviansk and Konstantinovka,

towns not controlled by the DPR, disappeared from the Alley of Angels (a monument honoring the children of Donbass killed by Ukrainians). By removing these names, it was as if DPR officials were abandoning the territories and the memory of those who remained under Kiev’s occupation.

In the early years of its independence, the LPR had constant political crises, from which the despised Igor Plotnitsky emerged as the victor. Until he was overthrown and the much more popular Leonid Pasechnik was elected.

All arguments ‘for’

The hope for reunification was based on the fact that Russia is a stable state governed by the rule of law, with fully-fledged institutions and an established civil society. Living their lives on the frontline of a geopolitical confrontation, Russians in Donbass dreamed that one day war would disappear.

They hoped that Donbass would become an ordinary, peaceful region of Russia, like neighboring Rostov. They hoped that they would be able to put away their weapons and return to the mines and factories, and they could teach their children without regular shelling. Or that they could sweep the streets for leaves instead of scrubbing away blood from the pavement. Joining Russia offered hope and was synonymous with victory. After all, this is why the struggle started…

Progress in talks of opening Oman airspace to Israeli flights: Media

Israeli news website "Israel" Hayom claimed Thursday that progress has been made in recent days between the Israeli occupation and Oman regarding talks to open the Sultanate's airspace to Israeli airlines.

The newspaper said the issue was discussed last week between a high-ranking Israeli official and his Omani counterparts, noting that it appears that talks took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

"Israel" Hayom pointed out that it is not absolutely clear whether the talks took place directly between Israeli and Omani officials or through Emirati and Saudi mediation.

Oman refuses to open its airspace to Israeli flights

In mid-August, Israeli media reported that "the Sultanate of Oman refused to open its airspace to Israeli flights," due to "Iranian pressure".

"Israel" Hayom said, "Oman refuses to open its airspace to Israeli travel planes amid intense Iranian pressure."

The newspaper added, "What this means so far is that it is not possible to benefit from opening the Saudi airspace to Israeli aircraft to shorten the flight time to the Far East."

It is worth noting that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Omani counterpart Badr Al-Busaidi had discussed in a phone call "bilateral relations, regional and world issues, and the Vienna nuclear negotiations. "

Last May, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that the stances of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman were "noticeably consistent on many issues," noting that "good relations between Iran and Oman enhance regional cooperation."
