Nashville Man Pleads Guilty To Federal

Firearms Charge After Hiding Cache Of Weapons In Detention Center

NASHVILLE – A Nashville, Tennessee man scheduled for trial in U.S. District Court next week pleaded guilty today to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Mark H. Wildasin for the Middle District of Tennessee.

Alexander Friedmann, 52, was charged in May 2020, after an elaborate scheme was uncovered in which Friedman hid a variety of weapons and accessories in the Davidson County Downtown Detention Center (DDC) while it was under construction. Friedmann was found guilty last month of felony vandalism by a state trial jury.

The Latvian parliament Thursday has designated Russia as a "state sponsor of terrorism", calling on Western allies to implement more comprehensive sanctions on Moscow.

LinkedIn Profiles Indicate 300 Current TikTok And ByteDance Employees Used To Work For Chinese State Media—And Some Still Do

Three hundred current employees at TikTok and its parent company ByteDance previously worked for Chinese state media publications, according to public employee LinkedIn profiles reviewed by Forbes.

Twenty-three of these profiles appear to have been created by current ByteDance directors, who manage departments overseeing content partnerships, public affairs, corporate social responsibility and “media cooperation.”

Fifteen indicate that current ByteDance employees are also concurrently employed by Chinese state media entities, including Xinhua News Agency, China Radio International and China Central / China Global Television. (These organizations were among those designated by the State Department as “foreign government functionaries” in 2020.)

Fifty of the profiles represent employees that work for or on TikTok, including a content strategy manager who was formerly a Chief Correspondent for Xinhua News.

The LinkedIn profiles reviewed by Forbes reveal significant connections between TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and the propaganda arm of the Chinese government, which has been investing heavily in using social media to amplify disinformation that serves the Chinese Communist Party. Chinese state media outlets have a large presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, but so far, they have been relatively quiet on TikTok.

Unlike the other major platforms, however, TikTok does not currently label accounts controlled by Chinese state media. In March, TikTok announced a plan to label “some” state media entities, but a Forbes review of China’s largest state media entities on the platform, including China News Service, Xinhua News Service, CGTN and the Global Times, found no added context or labels indicating the accounts’ state control. ByteDance and TikTok did not contest that the 300 LinkedIn profiles represent current employees or deny their connections to Chinese state media. None of the state media outlets named in this story responded to a request for comment.

Jennifer Banks, a spokesperson for ByteDance, said that ByteDance makes “hiring decisions based purely on an individual’s professional capability to do the job. For our China-market businesses, that includes people who have previously worked in government or state media positions in China. Outside of China, employees also bring experience in government, public policy, and media organizations from dozens of markets."

Chemists make N₂ into NH₃ in most efficient electrochemical reaction ever

Electrochemical reaction with Li has higher yield and uses less energy than conventional methods

Ammonia is a crucial fertilizer for the world’s food production, and now scientists have figured out how to make it with nearly 100% efficiency, using nitrogen gas and electricity (Nature 2022, DOI: 10.1038/s41586-022-05108-y). This new process could be a greener alternative to current NH3 production processes, which consume about 1% of the world’s total energy.

Most of the NH3 in the world is made by the Haber-Bosch process, which takes hydrogen gas made from fossil-fuel feedstocks, and ultimately combines it with N2 to make NH3. In 2010, the process dumped about 451 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air, according to the Institute for Industrial Productivity.

Alexandr Simonov, Douglas MacFarlane, and coworkers from Monash University improved on an electrochemical, lithium-mediated N2 reduction reaction to make NH3 at a rate 100 times as high as the rates of previous attempts. Simonov says changing the electrolyte increased the efficiency of the reaction in two ways: by increasing how much N2 is converted to NH3 and by improving what’s called the faradic efficiency. “It essentially means how much current is converted to the target product,” Simonov says.

In Li-mediated N2 electroreduction, a significant portion of the current causes other reactions, including the deposition of Li metal onto the electrode inside the electrochemical device and the reductive degradation of the electrolytes, MacFarlane says. By switching to a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide electrolyte, the team created a system that shut off unwanted side reactions with Li metal and spit out mainly NH3. “So this is a big deal in these two aspects, not only making the process more efficient, more effective, but also making it much more stable because there is no mechanism now for it to degrade,” MacFarlane says.

The device for turning N2 into NH3 is small and portable, he says, which makes it ideal for farmers to have on-site. “The device doesn’t have to be Haber-Bosch, chemical plant size and producing thousands of tons a day. It can produce kilograms of NH3 per day, which is exactly what farmers want,” MacFarlane says. In addition, scientists think NH3 can be a renewable alternative for carbon-based fuels, as well as a way to store and move energy from one place to another. This research will likely make a stable, practical process for sustainable NH3 production a reality.

“Reaching near 100% electron-based selectivity is something that has felt out of reach, but this study gets the field there,” says Karthish Manthiram, a chemical engineer at the California Institute of Technology. “This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.”

Ohio State Highway Patrol Exchanges Gunfire With Armed Man in Body Armor Attempting to Break Into FBI Building

Ohio State Highway Patrol exchanged gunfire with an armed man attempting to break into the FBI building in Cincinnati on Thursday morning.

The man was allegedly carrying an AR-15 and shooting into the building with a nail gun.

“At approximately 9:15 EST, the FBI Cincinnati Field Office had an armed subject attempt to breach the Visitor Screening Facility (VSF),” FBI Cincinnati said in a statement. “Upon the activation of an alarm and a response by armed FBI special agents, the subject fled northbound onto Interstate 71.”

At about 12:30 p.m. local time, the agency said the suspect was “contained” but not in custody, according to a report from NBC News.

The suspect took off on I-71 towards Columbus and the pursuit eventually ended near W. State Route 73, according to a report from Fox 8.

During the chase, the highway was shutdown in both directions as multiple agencies attempted to apprehend the suspect.

All buildings within a one mile radius of the FBI headquarters were also placed on lockdown.

A Devastating Fire Completely Destroyed the Pendleton Flour Mills in Oregon

A fire completely destroyed a building at Pendleton Flour Mills in Eastern Oregon on Wednesday.

Officials said that a small fire that started on Tuesday afternoon and reignited early Wednesday morning caused the Pendleton Flour Mills to go up in flames.

“Yesterday, August 9th at 2:55 p.m., City County Dispatch received a report of black smoke coming from the Pendleton Flour Mills with no visible flames,” said Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram. “The Pendleton Fire Department responded and extinguished the small fire however remained on scene conducting “fire watch.””

“The fire subsequently reignited at approximately 4:00 this morning [Wednesday] at which time it was fully engulfed due to dry grain, as well the wood structure within,” Byram added.

At 9:30 a.m., firefighters were still working the blaze from every direction, and a drone was flying overhead checking for additional hot spots.

There are no more buildings at risk, according to the Pendleton Fire Department, which is being helped by eight other agencies.

“Although the building is a total loss, this will be an ongoing emergent situation due to the amount of grain that is slow burning. There have not been any reported injuries,” Byram said.

People were encouraged to stay out of the area for their own safety, as well as the safety of firemen working diligently to stop the fire.

At 10:55 a.m., it appears that the flames have been extinguished, but firefighters are still on the site focusing on the remaining hot spots.

According to Chief Byram at 2:21 p.m., it seems that the fire crew is keeping the structure fire under control and will continue to monitor throughout the night for any hot spots

Grain Craft, which owns the Pendleton Flour Mills, bills itself as the country’s largest independent flour milling enterprise, according to its website.

Pavel Durov accuses US tech giants of harming app developers with their long review processes and profit cuts

Russian software entrepreneur Pavel Durov, who runs the company behind the popular messaging app Telegram, has slammed US tech giants for abusing their dominant market position.

The latest tirade, which Durov shared on Telegram on Wednesday, was triggered by Apple apparently stalling the release of a new version of his messenger.

“Our upcoming update – which is about to revolutionize how people express themselves in messaging – has been stuck in Apple’s ‘review’ for two weeks, without explanation or any feedback provided by Apple,” he complained.

The review is supposed to allow the app store operator to check submitted code for any possible malware and confirm it is up to safety standards, before users can install it. Durov said the process was “discouraging” for his team, adding that “one can only imagine the difficulties experienced by smaller app developers.”

“This harm goes on top of the 30% tax Apple and Google take from app developers – which, according to them, is supposed to pay for the resources needed to review apps,” the businessman added. “The regulators in the EU and elsewhere are slowly starting to look into these abusive practices. But the economic damage that has already been inflicted by Apple on the tech industry won't be undone.”

Apple stands out among tech companies with the strict rules for its platform. Unlike with Google’s Android OS, Only Apple-approved software downloaded from the company’s store is allowed on Apple devices.

Durov earlier claimed the policy turns Apple’s customers into “digital slaves” of the company’s ecosystem, who have no choice but to buy its “overpriced, obsolete” hardware, while submitting their data to surveillance and censorship.

Media Stopped Describing Targeting of Trump as “Raid” After Former FBI Agent Complained

The media stopped describing the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate as a “raid” after a top former FBI agent complained about the wording during an appearance on MSNBC.

Federal agents ransacked Trump’s Florida home, even going through his wife Melania’s wardrobes, in a bid to find classified records Trump allegedly took from the White House.

Trump supporters assert that the boxes recovered during the raid contain files that were already declassified by the time Trump left office.

The raid was carried out after an FBI informant had infiltrated Mar-a-Lago and discovered the precise location of where the files were being kept.

Despite widespread anger at the raid from both Trump supporters and Republicans in general, one former FBI agent tried to language police by insisting that the raid, timed for when the feds knew Trump wouldn’t be home, was not in fact a raid.

“Agents, by the way, don’t like the word raid, they don’t like it,” former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi told MSNBC.

“It sounds like it’s some kind of, you know, extra judicial non legal thing. It’s the execution of a search warrant. It’s a court authorized search warrant,” he added.

Figliuzzi insisted that the FBI would want the incident described as them having “executed a search warrant” and that calling it a “raid” helped Trump define what happened as “prosecutorial misconduct.”

Almost instantly, the media followed orders.

“MSNBC changed their chyron, from “FBI Raids Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Home,” to “FBI Executes Search Warrant At Trump’s Mar-A-Lago,” moments after Figliuzzi’s appearance, notes Jack Hadfield.

The New York Times also changed the word “raid” to “search”.

Prosecutors argued that Zhukovskyy, who had taken heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine that day, repeatedly swerved back and forth before the head-on crash and told police he caused it. However, a judge dismissed eight charges related to whether he was impaired. IRS Deletes Job Listing After Calling for Special Agents to Be Able to Kill Americans to Do Their Jobs

In what will sure be a moment that will have the fact checkers scrambling to justify it, the Internal Revenue Service put out job requirements for their new Criminal Investigation Special Agents, and the qualifications were shocking. They were so shocking in fact, that the IRS then deleted them — but not before the link was archived.

Just what was so shocking about the IRS and their new job listing? Well, the agency who is likely the most despised in the country is asking new hires if they would be willing to kill Americans in order to more effectively do their jobs.

“As a Special Agent you will combine your accounting skills with law enforcement skills to investigate financial crimes,” the job advertisement read. “Special Agents are duly sworn law enforcement officers who are trained to “follow the money.” No matter what the source, all income earned, both legal and illegal, has the potential of becoming involved in crimes which fall within the investigative jurisdiction of the IRS Criminal Investigation.”

The “Major Duties” listed in the job description included “a level of fitness necessary to effectively respond to life-threatening situations on the job,” and being “willing and able to participate in arrests, execution of search warrants, and other dangerous assignments.”

Further down on the listing, after pumping up potential candidates about retirement plans, applicants were told they needed to “be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.”

As we reported this week, the Schumer-Manchin tax bill known as the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed the Senate on Sunday, raises taxes and allocates a whopping $80 billion to the Internal Revenue Service so they can increase enforcement. The proposed increase is more than six times the current annual budget of the IRS which sits at $12.6 billion. And now they are hiring special agents who would be willing to kill to enforce tax law.

With this insane increase in spending, the IRS will be doubling their total workforce by hiring 80,000 to 87,000 additional employees who will be trained to separate you from the product of your labor — and must be okay with killing you to do so.

As we pointed out, this new tax bill will not be used to go after the rich and instead will hit the middle class and small business owners the hardest. It even had loopholes written in from the start.
