Boost in nerve-growth protein helps explain why running supports brain health

Exercise increases levels of a chemical involved in brain cell growth, which bolsters the release of the "feel good" hormone dopamine, a new study shows. Dopamine is known to play a key role in movement, motivation, and learning.

Experts have long understood that regular running raises dopamine activity in the brain and may protect nerve cells from damage. In addition, past research has tied exercise-driven boosts in the dopamine-triggering chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and in dopamine levels to improvements in learning and memory. However, the precise way these three factors interact has until now remained unclear.

Led by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the investigation showed that mice running on a wheel for 30 days had a 40% increase in dopamine release in the dorsal stratium, the part of the brain involved in movement, compared to levels in mice that did not exercise. The runners also showed a nearly 60% increase in BDNF levels compared to their non-running counterparts. Notably, the increase in dopamine release remained elevated even after a week of rest. Additionally, when BDNF levels were artificially reduced, running did not lead to additional dopamine release.

"Our findings suggest that BDNF plays a key role in the long-lasting changes that occur in the brain as a result of running," says study lead author and neurobiologist Guendalina Bastioli, Ph.D. "Not only do these results help explain why exercise makes you move, think, and feel better, they also show that these benefits continue even if you do not work out every day," adds Bastioli, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neuroscience at NYU Langone Health.

US tells Europe to give more money to Ukraine

The US and its allies must pay Ukrainian wages and foot the bill for reconstruction, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen declared

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called on Tuesday for the US’ allies to pay Ukrainian wages and rebuild infrastructure in the war-torn country. Deeming the billions of dollars already committed by the US and Europe insufficient to keep Ukraine afloat, Yellen declared that Kiev will eventually need “massive support” on the level of the post-WWII Marshall Plan.

With US lawmakers poised to approve a $40 billion package of military and economic aid to Ukraine and the US government agencies involved there, Yellen addressed the Brussels Economic Forum on Tuesday to persuade European leaders to open their wallets for Kiev.

“I sincerely ask all our partners to join us in increasing their financial support to Ukraine,”she said.

Ukraine needs budget funding to pay soldiers, employees and pensioners, as well as to operate an economy that meets its citizens' basic needs.

The EU will soon have committed four consecutive €500 million ($520 million) packages of military aid to Ukraine since February, and €1.2 billion ($1.26 billion) worth of emergency loans since January. However, the Ukrainian government claims to need around $5 billion per month to keep the country’s economy alive.

“What’s clear is that the bilateral and multilateral support announced so far will not be sufficient to address Ukraine’s needs, even in the short term,” Yellen declared.

EU leaders will meet on Wednesday to discuss a new package of financial aid to Kiev. The bloc is planning on borrowing money in global markets to give to Ukraine in the form of repayable loans and non-repayable grants, according to a Guardian report. EU officials are also examining the feasibility of using assets seized from sanctioned Russians and Belarussians to finance this aid package.

According to Reuters’ sources, the package being discussed in Brussels would cover Ukraine’s expenses for roughly two months.

Yellen said that in the longer term, Ukraine would need “massive support,” on the scale of the US’ post-World War II Marshall Plan for Europe, to rebuild its economy and infrastructure.

It remains unclear to what extent the EU will be able to finance such a reconstruction project. The bloc’s 27 member states are currently grappling with skyrocketing inflation and energy costs, partly due to Brussels’ ongoing efforts to reduce energy imports from Russia. Yellen promised that the US would step up exports of American liquefied natural gas to Europe, but transporting this fuel to Europe from the US is costlier than piping it from Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday thatEuropean countries are committing economic “suicide” by trying to wean themselves off Russian oil and gas, accusing them of caving to pressure “from their American overlord” without “paying any attention to the damage that they have already caused their own economy.”

Ukraine controlled by US and UK – Russia

The stalling of the peace talks is a result of the wish of London and Washington to drag out the Ukraine conflict, Lavrov claimed

London and Washington have been exercising their control over the Ukrainian negotiators with the aim of dragging out the conflict, and this policy has led to the suspension of peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on Tuesday.

Speaking at the New Horizons educational marathon, Lavrov said that Ukraine may have made its own decision in Istanbul, when it came up with some “acceptable principles for reaching agreements” during negotiations with Russia. However, according to the minister, these ideas were apparently not supported by the West.

“We have information coming through various channels that Washington and especially London ‘lead’ the Ukrainian negotiators and control their freedom of maneuver. They want to drag out the conflict, and it seems to them that the longer it will last, the more damage they will inflict on Russian servicemen,” Lavrov said.

The foreign minister doubts, however, that “transferring the conversation to the level of Washington or London” would be able to change anything in terms of the progress.

“Anyway, neither London, nor Washington, nor the West as a whole has put forward any proposals,” Lavrov said.

The West actually acknowledged thatUkraine is “expendable in a hybrid total war against the Russian Federation,” Lavrov claimed, citing remarks by the EU, UK and US officials who have said on multiple occasions that Russia should not be allowed to win in the Ukrainian conflict.

“The war was declared by them. And not at all between Ukraine and Russia, but between the West and Russia,” Lavrov said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said that diplomatic dialogue between Moscow and Kiev had been completely suspended after Kiev withdrew from negotiations without providing any response to the latest Russian proposals.

A Ukrainian presidential adviser, Mikhail Podolyak, later confirmed that “after the Istanbul communiqué [in March], there have been no changes, no progress.”

Billionaire admits that the true leader is “whoever controls the teleprompter”

Billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk has written off US President Joe Biden as an ineffective puppet, insisting that while he has voted “overwhelmingly for Democrats” in the past, the party has spiraled downwards.

“The real president is whoever controls the teleprompter,” the SpaceX CEO observed during a Monday podcast, declaring “the path to power is the path to the teleprompter.”

“I do feel like if somebody were to accidentally lean on the teleprompter, it’s going to be like Anchorman,” he continued, referencing the 2004 film whose lead character read whatever was written on the teleprompter no matter how absurd or detrimental to his own career.

Despite his stated support for Democrats, Musk spared some favorable words for the previous president, pointing out that the Biden administration “doesn’t seem to get a lot done” while “the Trump administration, leaving Trump aside, there were a lot of people in the administration who were effective at getting things done.”

Worse, the Democratic Party is “overly controlled by the unions and by the trial lawyers, particularly the class action lawyers,” Musk argued, claiming that when the party goes against “the interests of the people,” it is motivated by those groups, while Republicans acting similarly are motivated “because of corporate evil and religious zealotry.” Biden, unlike another Democratic president Barack Obama, “is simply too much captured by the unions,” he said. Musk’s animosity toward unionization at his companies is well-known, with Tesla previously found guilty of sabotaging organizing efforts.

Musk also complained about the US’ record-high inflation and the government’s apparent failure to understand its causes, noting that the “obvious reason” for the phenomenon was “that the government printed a zillion amount of more money than it had, obviously,” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The government can’t just you know, issue checks far in excess of revenue without there being inflation…if the federal government writes checks, they never bounce. So that is effectively the creation of more dollars. And if there are more dollars created, then the increase in goods and services across the economy, then you have inflation.” The concept, the world’s richest man argued, was “just very basic” and “not like, you know, super complicated.”

“If the government could just issue massive amounts of money and deficits didn’t matter, then, well, why don’t we just make the deficit 100 times bigger? The answer is you can’t because it will basically turn the dollar into something that is worthless,” Musk said, hinting that “various countries” had “tried this experiment multiple times.” He held up Venezuela as an example of a nation where the “poor, poor people” have “been just run roughshod by their government,” neglecting to mention the crippling sanctions imposed by the US that have prevented Caracas from doing business with most of the world, resulting in economic catastrophe and tens of thousands of deaths from 2017 to 2018 alone.

Along with the downfall of the Democratic Party, Musk lamented the decline of Twitter, the acquisition of which has not yet been completed pending questions about managing bots and spam on the platform. The world desperately needed a platform where people could “debate issues of all kinds, including the most substantive issues,” Musk argued, insisting it should be “as broadly inclusive as possible” and “balanced from a political standpoint,” rather than its current status with a “very far left bias.”

According to Fox News border correspondent Bill Melugin, the DHS court filing for April shows more than 230,000 migrant encounters were logged at the southern border last month —the highest number in DHS history.

“BREAKING: There were 234,088 migrants encountered at the Southern border in April, per a DHS court filing today. That’s the highest number in DHS history,” Melugin tweeted Monday afternoon. He added that “117,989 migrants were released into the U.S. in April” and “113,248 were removed, including 96,908 expelled via Title 42.”

And with the end of Title 42, that number is only going up. Members of the GOP are doing everything they can to prevent the Biden Administration from lifting the Trump-era health policy that has helped turn migrants around at the border —including filing a lawsuit against Biden.

“Revoking Title 42 will create an unprecedented surge at the southern border and it will overwhelm law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations as well,” the Republicans who filed the lawsuit argue. “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, (DHS), estimates getting rid of Title 42 will result in as many as 18,000 migrants per day – which could mean 540,000 migrants in a single month.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded to the record-breaking news on Twitter.

Interesting tidbit:He was “frustrated” because Baker WOULDN’T tell him who he got the data from! even for the Chain of Custody and the “Greensheet” (FBI form for identifying evidence owners). Baker didn’t complete the Custody form - Hellman initiated it.

The stuff - data on a thumb drive & a summary with conclusions - went from Baker to Strzok to DepAssDirCyber (Sporag?ph) to his supervisor Batty(?ph) and then on to others.

He and Batty didn’t know when they did their analysis who had provided the stuff. They were given two tasks to do ASAP and to prepare a summary and then forwarded stuff to FBI Chicago - which opened an investigation.

Hellman/Batty quickly concluded (1) there was no evidence supporting “cyber equity” meaning no evidence of a crime that fell within their jurisdiction, and (2) that they disagreed with the conclusions in the ”white paper” summary. Took them less than a day to prepare summary.

The white paper alleged Trump was using a “secret email server” further described as “a very unusually configured email server” & that the “only” conclusion to be drawn from the data provided was that it’s purpose was to shield communications between Trump & Russia.

Helllman/Batty separately & together decided that conclusion was not supported by the data and allegations. They thought the paper leapt to illogical conclusions not supported by the data, that the methodology was questionable, and that the ultimate conclusion didn’t make sense.

On the last point, the specifically pointed out that it made no sense to conclude the effort was “secret” when the email domain name had “Trump” in the name, that domain was registered to a Trump entity, & that the contact was directly w/a Russian entity.

He testified those facts don’t suggest a “secret anything.” Also, they opined that - based on prior experience with it - Russian technical sophistication exceeded the OPSEC for what was found in the data.

Basically, they concluded: this is a bunch of nonsense and if there was such an effort, the Russians would have done a way better job than this half-assed effort. (My paraphrasing. 😆)

The also found it very “coincidental” and suspicious that the supposed evidence began only 3 weeks before the effort to uncover it began.

Abbott Laboratories revealed Monday that it had entered into a consent decree with the FDA that creates a pathway to reopen its Michigan baby formula factory, however the timeline for operations remains unclear.

The outrage at the border stock pile also comes as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans next week to end restrictions, known as Title 42, that have prevented migrants from seeking asylum under U.S. law and international treaty on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The legislator, escorted by border patrol agents, captured pictures and videos from inside the facility, showing pallets filled with unopened boxes of baby supplies.

One image showed mounds of infant formula featuring handwritten dates, likely to denote expiration, of June 2023.

She also showed video of migrants appearing to utilize the supplies.

Cammack, speaking to Fox after the visit, said it is 'just another example of the broken administration that doesn't know how to govern.'

REVEALED: BLM founder Patrisse Cullors paid her baby father $970,000 for 'creative services', her brother $840,000 for security, a fellow director $2.1m and reimbursed the organization $73,000 for a charter flight

Newly released tax filings revealed how Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors used charity funds to pay her friends and family large sums for various 'consulting' services, as well as charter a private flight.

The documents reveal that BLM paid a company owned by Damon Turner, the father of Cullors' child, nearly $970,000 to help 'produce live events' and provide other 'creative services.'

Leaders have attempted to justify the expense by saying the foundation's protection could not be entrusted to former police professionals who typically run security firms because the BLM movement is known for vehemently protesting law enforcement organizations.

A consulting firm run by Shalomyah Bowers, who is BLM's board secretary and has previously served as deputy executive director, was paid more than $2.1 million for providing the organization with operational support, including staffing, fundraising and other key services.

Cullors resigned from BLM last year amid a wave of scrutiny surrounding the charity's finances.

She has repeatedly denied claims that she took money from BLM for personal matters and has reiterated that all the purchases and transactions - including a lavish $6million home in Los Angeles, dubbed Studio City - were legitimate.

The new filing also revealed that Cullors reimbursed BLM $73,523 for a charter flight for foundation-related travel, which the organization says she took in 2021 out of concern for COVID-19 and security threats.

She paid the foundation an additional $390 over her uses of the 6,500 square-foot Studio City property for two private events.

The latest financial disclosures come after Cullors had already come under fire for receiving a $120,000 payment - 'consulting fees' - by BLM.

For those who can’t stand uptalk, here’s what she said in the video:

Talking about the deep state and things like that which is a thread among conspiracy communities here in the United States, that there is this secret cabal here in Washington working to undermine the American people couldn’t be further from the truth, as someone who works with and around these public servants every day.

Whatever one thinks of the precise term “deep state,” Nina badly wants everyone to dismiss the very concept of secret groups operating within Washington. She works “with and around” them after all, and she says such a cabal or network of cabals does not exist.

In fact, Nina does know the truth, and it’s the opposite of what she claims above. Nina’s name appeared in one of the most explosive and aggressively censored national security leaks of the century. The leak in question exposed the “Integrity Initiative,” a dark government-funded NGO that appears to have engaged in political meddling and covert influence operations in Western countries under the guise of fighting “disinformation.”

Founded in mid-2015 under the auspices of the U.K. government-funded NGO “Institute for Statecraft,” the Integrity Initiative boasted a precociously fashionable motto: “Defending Democracy Against Disinformation.”

The Integrity Initiative “defended democracy” by recruiting secretive “clusters” of academics, national security bureaucrats, journalists, think tankers, and lobbyists in multiple European countries. These clusters would then be engaged in various ways to address nation-specific threats of so-called “Russian disinformation.”

In its organization, funding, operation, structure, and rhetoric the Integrity Initiative is the single best template for understanding how the entire hornets’ nest of NGOs, journalists, and “national security” bureaucrats work secretly and in concert to wage psychological warfare against citizens of the West. One cannot understand how the Disinformation Industry functions without understanding the little-known (and now defunct) Integrity Initiative.

Thankfully, before its demise, hackers leaked a huge swath of internal documents from the Integrity Initiative. More on that leak in a moment, but for now, here is an official description of the “clusters” from one of those leaked documents:

The Integrity Initiative was set up in autumn 2015 by the Institute for Statecraft in cooperation with the Free University of Brussels (VUB) to bring to the attention of politicians, policy-makers, opinion leaders and other interested parties the threat posed by Russia to democratic institutions in the United Kingdom, across Europe and North America

The Integrity Initiative Aims to unite people who understand the threat, in order to provide a coordinated Western response to Russian disinformation and other elements of hybrid warfare.

The nature of this response needs to render counter productive the Russian tactic of dividing countries internally and from one another. This will be the case if each Russian information and influence attack provokes the country targeted into sharing analysis of the attack with other countries in the network on a governmental basis, thereby increasing collaboration and Alliance cohesion. NATO’s political Committee can play an important role here.

An effective network is best achieved by forming in each European country a cluster of well-informed people from the political, military, academic, journalistic and think-tank spheres, who will track and analyze examples of disinformation in their country and inform decision-makers and other interested parties about what is happening.

Nina Jankowicz’s name appears in a 2018 leak as a member of the “inner core” of the Integrity Initiative’s U.K. Cluster, specifically in the sub-group dedicated to Russia.

World’s Richest Family Loses $17 Billion in Walmart Wipeout

The Walton family fortune tumbled more than $16.5 billion on Tuesday after Walmart Inc. slashed its profit outlook. The family, which owns its stake through various trusts, has stepped up its stock sales in recent years. They unloaded $6.2 billion in shares last year, which the company has said is part of a strategy to keep the family’s stake under 50% amid buybacks.

Those disposals have helped the Waltons accumulate significant wealth outside their Walmart stake. An investment firm for the family invests mostly in low-cost exchange-traded funds and held about $5.1 billion in US stocks and ETFs at the end of the first quarter.

That’s armed them with ample funds for acquisitions. Rob Walton is said to be bidding for the Denver Broncos, the first National Football League team to be up for sale in four years. It’s expected to sell for more than $4 billion.
